Increasingly, Domini has made their stories more complex with plot twists, interesting red herrings, and more character development but using so many of the same inventory tropes and predictable play results in a mediocre game, when it could have been so much more.
That said, I think Domini is working on the problem by decreasing some of the back-and-forth; also, there are some variations on mini games and puzzles. I don't think it's an easy task, and I applaud Domini for their efforts and the number of games they release. Thank you.
As well, this game really seems to have the glitches, especially if you like collectibles, which I don't, but even I could not help noticing the problem. And for me there was a problem with the bonus chapter; no doubt, playing the entire game over will probably sort it out, if I do.
I think this can be a good series, and I look forward to the next game.
I am a real fan of this series and this game doesn't disappoint. The story is strong but its structure a bit weak so the pace of the game feels a bit off. That said, I appreciate there is not a lot of back and forth; each task and HOP scene move the story forward.
The HOs and mini-games are easy but in a few instances the developer provides a bit of variation. I am not a fan of collectable bling so the fewer morphs and collectables is not an issue for me.
The game is a bit short, perhaps due to the absence of red herrings; yet, the bonus chapter is a strong one, as it ties up the loose ends of the main game. For me, the length is fine.
As has been noted the storyline and graphics are excellent but the game play doesn't quite keep up with either, and that's too bad because this is an excellent story with strong plot twists and superb scenery. Not all the tasks are the usual tropes (same for HOS) and some of the mini games are unique. So for me, it's a strong 4 star game.
It's possible I have missed something in the main game and bonus chapter game play so I may play again because the story is that good. And alone, the graphics are fun to look at.
I don't like dolls but Domini has convinced my that some dolls are rather clever, especially at Christmas time. This is a wonderful game for the season and the graphics are superb. Scene after scene was a wow for me (and so was the color scheme). Bravo, Domini!
The storyline is full of plot twists, as some toys help while a certain elf not so much. Adding these twists expands the plot line so we get more game for the story. The game play pace is well done so we feel we are in the story. For me, that is what a good HOPA does (as well as include a Match 3 option).
This review is based upon completion of the main game and bonus chapter.
Someone said best game of the year and this one very well could be. It is different from the classic MCF, as was Harbinger.
To me, both these games signal a break from the past, and I like the new direction the series is taking. The MCF series has always been different, taking chances with new concepts; for me, that is why it is one of the most successful and long-lasting series.Looking forward to what comes next.
For me, this is the best game in this series--so far, anyway. It is true that there is a lot to do but the pace of the game is steady without a lot of back and forth. I play Match 3 (Thank you, Domini) rather than the HOs but I enjoyed the mini-games; some are new variations on older games (I think). All in all, the storyline and game play are well integrated IMO.
I found the storyline a whimsical look at fairytale land where irony seems to abound. The Three Little Pigs, I think, are my favorite in this modern take on old themes. It's not quite satire and too kind to be sarcastic so tongue-in-cheek it is. This is not just your good and evil story, not that there isn't that, too. Well done, Domini!
The Bonus Chapter is not related to the main story. It is a short one and straightforward story. It pales in comparison to the main game but the pace is good with storyline and game play well integrated so not a lot of back and forth.
It seems to me that no matter the series, this developer is adding depth to their storylines in these last few months. I really appreciate it, Domini Games!
The graphics are stunning--every scene--it's fun just to look at the detail and appreciate the work and time that went into this game but it's the story that makes this a tale for telling at Halloween. There is more than one dimension to this Grim Reaper story; it is not what it first appears to be There is more than one kind of creep factor in the world. Good job, Elephant Games.
I wish the game play was better integrated with the storyline but there are fewer emblems (again, kudos). When the HOS and mini-games/puzzles are part of the plot, the play is seamless, and the story's the thing. That doesn't happen in this game (too often) but the graphics and storyline are brilliant in both the main game and bonus chapter. That's a solid game for me.
No one game is for everyone but for everyone there is a game. Enjoy!
The Fatal Evidence detective series has become my favorite Domini game and the Art of Murder demonstrates why, a strong story. All murder mysteries have essentially the same plot line but it is how the story is told that makes the difference.
For the most part, Domini integrates story with game play quite well, although there is some back and forth. There is always a lot to do in a Domini game, and I find it enjoyable. I like this series because I am a murder-mystery fan, and this story is a straight up whodunit. Well done, Domini!
It seems to me that in Domini's recent game offerings, the storylines have more depth and solid plot twists. I have a new appreciation for their games.
The game truly is gorgeous and a superb game for those new to HOPA games. That said, if you want a relaxed game that is not challenging, Call of Hills is it. There is little to no back and forth in this game because each scene is self-sufficient--everything you need is at your fingertips.
The storyline is not all it seems--the mark of a good plot--but the story has some holes and while it promises a lot, it doesn't deliver. The main game had me rushing to the bonus chapter in hopes the story would come together, and it does--through text--if not in play. Perhaps we will see the Seeds again??? I wouldn't mind.
I bought this game because I have enjoyed this series, its "edge," and for me this game is on the edge between 3 and 4. To rate it a 3 is to deny the sound structure, incredible graphics, and ambitious storyline so for me it's a 4.
For me, this is a solid game, and I know I will enjoy playing it again. I am anxious for the next offering in this series from its new developer. With this game, I sense a new direction, which may be the reason the series has lasted as long as it has, experimenting with new ideas. Well done, GRandMA games.
The music in this game is stunning, so melodic and so appropriate for each scene. More than once I stopped my game play just to listen. I cannot remember the last time I did that in a game, if I ever did.
There is a bit of the obtuse in some of the mini games and more than one plot hole in the story line but again, I appreciate the developer trying something new by incorporating some of the old. I enjoy the ambiguity of the storyline. To say any more would give it away.
