It's been a while since I have played a Hidden Expedition game so I'm quite familiar with this developer but this game does not work for me overall. That said, there are some good moments. Perhaps this is just not my series.
And that's why mine is a four star rating as opposed to three. I don't think it would be fair to give the game three stars because this series is not one of my favorites.
I like a game that is driven by plot, even if the story line is a tried-and-true one, and this one isn't. I don't think that the puzzles were well placed but the HOPS I enjoyed very much as an addition to the story.
You won't go wrong playing this game, especially with the fun filled facts that do add to the story, but try the demo first to make sure it's your kind of story.
My favorite games feature story lines that make sense. I have been playing HO/adventure games for a few years now concentrating mostly on hidden objects and puzzles and giving little notice to story. Clearly I have missed a lot but then, I have many a game to play again. Only recently I have begun to submit reviews.
Within that context, Modern Tales is my kind of game because its story line sets the pace for both hidden objects and puzzles. While it is a familiar rescue theme (daughter and father), that is only where the story starts. Along the way we meet various inventors and inventions with not a lot of back-and-forth inventory retrieving (but some). There is no gore or violence but a fun storyline that stays mostly within science but has just a touch of magic. It really is fun.
Artifex Mundi is a developer that I enjoy, mostly because their stories are a bit different, or at least that is true for the ones I have played. The graphics are better than average and the voice overs are not exactly in sync but they do not distract from the game play. Generally, I play the "casual" setting but sometimes custom as I just want to immerse myself in the game for a while and be a part of another story. This game allowed me to do that. Enjoy!
I pay attention to storyline and how the tasks (puzzles, mini-games) work with it, and this one does. This is not a challenging game but the story engages the player, rather than just a few lines of dialogue here and there followed by lots of searching. It looks like the beginning of a series, and I hope it is. Also, this is a favorite developer of mine.
Story is important to me, and I liked this mixture of detective and a bit of magic. Frankly, I favor whodunit and detective stories with little gore and few dark, bone-strewn scenes, and I was not disappointed. This is my first Mystery of the Ancients, and I intend to try another. For me, this was just the right mixture of story, strategy, mini games, and HOPs (these were particularly good). Well done, developers.
