This really was one of the worst games I have ever played. I'm not against old fashioned, more basic games as, quite often nowadays, there is more style over substance. However, this had neither of those qualities. The map and the hint button were both next to useless, the storyline was pathetic and, assuming the game was worth playing, it is ridiculously short with an ending all wrapped up in a still screen with a written explanation. Big wow. Value for money it ain't. There were a couple of HOs with silhouettes rather than words. Well, when I say silhouette I mean little smudge which requires much squinting and guesswork to establish what it is. As another reviewer has said, this list was repeated a bit later on only with words instead of smudges. That is totally lazy and, quite frankly, not good enough. Save your money.
I started playing this one evening late on and went back to it this afternoon. I had forgotten what the storyline was, who I was, what my aim was; all I knew was that there was a dragon involved. This isn't to say my memory is going, it's just that so little stands out about this game that it is easily forgettable. Boring repetitive HOs and games don't help much either. I did like the dragon and that's the only reason it gets two stars and not one.
I admit it was my own fault that I bought this on a whim just to get a 2 for 1 deal but I wish I hadn't bothered. Fairies, wizards, witches and - the worst of all - a supposedly cute little helper with a Joe Pesci-esque voice which grated from the beginning. And then we meet the obligatory grumpy little leprechaun. Enough! To be fair, the game played well as it limped along a very disjointed and senseless storyline and a few of the HOs and puzzles were ok. All in all, a definite try before you buy.
On paper, this should be great. Demons, hunters and not a fluffy helper in sight. However, it's a bit like reading a Dostoevsky novel; yes, you know it's good but are you really enjoying it? I'm finding it all rather turgid and lacking pace but maybe I'm not as good at these games as others are.
There were a couple of pet peeves too; another missing zip pull - please, no more - and HOs where you had to click pixel perfect. There was one where I had to find a knife, I could see the knife, I clicked on it several times all to no avail, I eventually asked for a hint which I very rarely do and, lo and behold, it indicated the very knife I'd identified straight away. Annoying. I'm not going to give a recommendation on this one but I would strongly suggest that you try before buying.
It should have been a 3.5 rating but I rounded it up because I'm feeling generous. I was so looking forward to this having really enjoyed the 5 star offerings which were the first two in the series. It just didn't feel right when I was playing it, there was no gob-smacking ride through the Underground (sorry, Subway), no weird mystery, no atmosphere. I was all set to give a two star review after the first hour or so but for once, this game got better the further into it you got. I won't bother with a detailed summary, other reviewers have done that job very well, I'll just suggest that you forget the title and play it as if it were a stand alone game and not a New York Mystery so your expectations are not disappointed. The bonus game is of a decent length and is quite enjoyable so it's not a complete write-off by any means but I wouldn't give it a top rating.
I did enjoy playing this one despite the rehashed theme. I suppose there are only so many stories that can be told as a backdrop to one of our games. The game played well, no glitches, the map worked, there were morphs and collectibles throughout the entire game and the bonus game was of a decent length and level of interest.
However, there were negatives. I thought the HOs, though clear, were pretty basic; any interaction was really quite minimal. Apart from the bonus game itself, there were no extras to speak of - wallpapers, music etc - which is a pretty poor show in my opinion. The third negative was the woman's voice. I suggest her next job should be as a mime artist because the voice was just plain awful.
I'm a bit torn whether to recommend you wait for the SE because of the lack of extras but the bonus game was a good one so I recommend you get the CE on a sale day.
I'm rather enjoying this even though it isn't groundbreaking or in any way innovative. It rattles along at a decent pace, has a storyline that keeps your interest with decent HOs and puzzles along the way. Graphics seem a bit old school but I'd prefer to concentrate on the level of play that is on offer and not how prettily it is packaged. I didn't give it 5 stars because the collectibles are a little meagre, there are glaring spelling mistakes and one very dodgy puzzle involving a radio. It might be worth waiting for the SE but I'll recommend it all the same.
This game is one of the slowest I have ever played. The only reason I gave it two stars rather than one is that the graphics are excellent. It is just plain boring to play and the interrogation bit where you question the "suspects" is especially painful. HOs are completely lacking in challenge and the puzzles are mediocre at best. I got it using a free game coupon and I still think I've been swizzed.
I was so pleased to see another in the Cadenza series but I was saddened to realise when playing it that it has really slipped into the mediocre. Yes, the graphics are crisp and clear, the music (if you like the genre) is fine and the gameplay is trouble free but there was no sense of "Wow!" about it. HOs are clear but unremarkable, collectibles - a diamond - are easy to spot, morphs offer the occasional challenge and the puzzles are not too difficult. I only skipped on one which was where you have to get through a maze whilst dodging police cars. Annoying.
I didn't have to resort to the strategy guide once and it was a rather short game so I would recommend you get the SE or do what I did and get the CE on sale at the SE price.
I'm sorry to be a curmudgeon but I cannot join in with the rave reviews for this one. As with a lot of games, it started off very well but it soon became a bit wearisome. It's got morphs, collectibles and all the usual CE bling which is good but I just don't feel I care about it. I'm about 80% through it and I wouldn't cry if something prevented me from ever seeing it to its conclusion. I can't condemn it because it has some good features but it's far from brilliant. On that basis, I'll leave the recommendation blank and suggest you try it to see if I'm just being a grump.
