Can you remember in Blackadder IV, the brilliant poem written by Baldrick about the guns? Substitute the word "Yawn" for "Boom" and you've got a great poem about this game.
Apologies to those who have never seen Blackadder.
I tried to like this one for old time's sake but my review title says it all. The story was clunky - I've just finished the game and I can't really remember what it was all about so that speaks volumes. Puzzles and the many HOPs were on the boring side. I've uninstalled it as I had no wish to play it again which says a lot for me.
I was really looking forward to this game having read all the rave reviews but I found it a bit of a disappointment. It was like a revisit to the excellent House of a Thousand Doors (early) series but without any of the excitement or interest. I just couldn't care less about the protagonists especially Diana with the awful voice. The only saving grace was that some of the HOs were more of the puzzle variety when you have to find then use to find another. I won't be replaying it which, in my world, means it's not terribly good.
Do you remember when the original Phantasmat came out and we all went "Wow!"? Well those days are long gone. This is so boring, so dreary, with tiresome puzzles and minimal bling that I'm having to force myself to see it through to the end. What an absolute drag.
This could have been so good, creepy premise, original story to start off with and then ... fizzle into tedium. It doesn't matter how good the graphics are, a broken zip is still a broken zip and it's boring. It really was a cut and paste job of all the usual overused mechanics set against a different backdrop. Oh, and one thing that does irritate me - you couldn't fast click through the dialogue which went on and on often .. very .. slowly. Let's just sum it up by saying as soon as I had finished the game I uninstalled it.
If this series were a horse, it would have been put down ages ago. It is painful to play this game knowing how wonderful the original MCF games were; I'm sure I'm not the only one who was drawn into this whole genre because of them. This one is boring beyond belief, I couldn't tell you the story because it was so nonsensical it didn't register. The mini-games were so tedious I was skipping them as I simply could not be bothered to try. Truly, I had to force myself to play it to a finish and then I couldn't wait to hit the uninstall button.
One of the criteria I use to judge a game is how enjoyable it is to replay it. When I first played this game, I thought it was just OK but on replaying it, I realised it was rather dull. The storyline was weak and the voices, especially the female ones, were grating to say the least and you do get to hear them far too often and for too long. There was nothing new about the puzzles or the HOs; in short, it was a well packaged same old, same old. There were no tech issues and the graphics were fine but did I enjoy it? Not much.
Regrettably I got this as a CE and it was just awful. It was boring beyond words, stupid, illogical storyline, bad accents, nothing new or challenging. I could go on but suffice to say, I played it through gritted teeth to its unsatisfactory and lazy ending then uninstalled it immediately. Don't waste your money.
I really did love this game, bags of fun, fantastic graphics, entertaining and different storyline which stretches the bounds of credulity but who cares when you're enjoying yourself. It wasn't overloaded with HOs and, to be honest, they weren't particularly original but they served their purpose well enough. The puzzles range from the dead simple to the "let's have a look at the strategy guide" with most being enjoyable.
There are quite a few cut scenes but you can click to process them quickly which is a feature I always appreciate. There were a couple of gripes from pedantic me, for example, one character, with a passable English accent told me to pull the "levver" instead of lever but I loved the game that much that I forgave her.
I got the CE which I would recommend over the SE but I'm sure you'd enjoy either. It's worth giving it a try at least.
If you've played Wicked Harvest, then you've played this one. The previous game in this series, Silent Mountain, was a very good game, in my opinion, but with this one the developer seems to have reverted to an earlier chapter, aforementioned Wicked Harvest, and just rehashed it. Nothing new at all, cute little helper (yuk), grainy graphics, stupid storyline etc. etc. - and I mean etc. I'm not saying that everybody must agree with me but, really, let's have something a bit innovative, engaging and challenging rather than this repetitive mediocrity.
