Finally, a 5 star game that was worthy of being labled a CE and for those who passed on it, a superb SE game to be added to your collection. I had a blast playing it and one again I applaud the Developers for this exciting and fun game. You will find that It has all the bells and whistles that a top notch Adventure/HOG game should have. The story begins with you having to save your brother who has mysteriously disappeared upon the death of your Father, a famous film director and inventor. There is much creepiness involved and many twists and turns along the way. The art work is beautiful, actually some scenes were quite stunning, I just wished the graphics could have been of a higher resolution which was a minor disapointment. Art deco is one of my favorite settings and this has all the look of a genuine film Noire set in the 1950's. Cut scenes have real people in them with voice-overs along with full sound effects. Make sure you do wear your earphones to fully emerse yourself into the game. Game features include two modes of play, a diary with a map and list of objectives. There are several types of collectables to find along the way and many achievments which offers a challenging gaming expereience and replay value. You have puzzles to solve and mini-games which I found unique and some were challenging. Hard-core players will be pleased. HOS are crowded and interactive and unfortunately the poor resolution did make some items difficult to find. Nevertheless, I for one did not mind the least. There is so much to do and my advice, take your time, enjoy the experience and solve the mystery. My personal opinion, if these developers continue to improve on their games mechanics and graphics, MCF will surely have worthy competitiors in the futur. I do look forward to many more games from them and KUDOS to BFG on this new partnership
I recommend this game!

I haven't given perfect marks for a game in a while, this game ranks number one on my list for 2012. Kudos to the developers for designing a game with unique game features and game mechanics and Kudos to BFG for bringing us this real gem. Where do I start? This game has everything and more for fans of HOPA, Match Three, HOGs and Adventure. The graphics are outstanding as is the art work. I really loved some of the drawings. Sound and acoustics are far superior to many recent games we have seen and voice overs were in sync which is rare. I especially liked the music and special sound effects.. The story begins with twin sisters who were raised in an orphanage. One has been kidnapped and the other must find her. During her search, she embarks on an adventure that will lead her into the dark world of the occult. She will discover her family's true origin. Game features include three modes of game play, a journal that has a task list, achievements, awards, Strategy guide and a store where you can buy bonus game features. Once you embark on your journey, you will come across HO scenes that are interactive and depending how fast you are able to play them, you recieve coins. You also have a choice of playing Match 3 games instead. Throughtout the game there are collectable that will increase your coins and puzzles as well. You must complete each HO or minigame in order to move on. Don't dispare, you can always revert back to your diary and replay them as well. The more coins you collect, the more you can buy from the bonus store. HO scenes are crowded and interactive and I really did love playing the Match games as well. I could go on and on about all the things I loved about the game but I really want to go back and purchase it immediately so I can continue playing. Once again I predict that this will be the number one game of the year unless an MCF game comes out this year.
I recommend this game!

I passed on the CE version of this game because I just thought it just did not meet the standards that I set for what qualifies as a CE game. THerefore I settled to wait for the SE version and I am glad I did. Granted that the storyline is nothing we havent seen and the game mechanics involve your run of the mill Adventure HOG. Story begins with the plane crash and although I do like the occasional backstory, I was put off by the fact that there was no journal or map included. after surviving the crash, you find yourself on a deserted island haunted by trap spirits who are kept by a madmen bent on unrequited love. So once again there are sould to be saved, HO scenes to play and puzzles to solve. Like I said, nothing really outstanding. Graphics are good, occasionally dark and grainy due to weather conditions. Voiceover acting is very authentic. HO scens are junk-piled and interactive, not as easy as one would predict. Some items were just too small or too dark to find. Puzzles were unique and enjoyable. The most challenging aspect of the game was collecting the 40 souls hidden throughout. Very difficult to spot in some cases and there are awards to gain as well. Word of warning, bring along your extra pair of running shoes and be prepared to meet some very interesting characters. Overall, a very good game to have especially as a SE, a bit on the short side but nevertheless, worth having.
I recommend this game!

I guess it must be amateur day today because I find it hard to believe that professional game developers could have come up with this one. I thought the storyline would have been cute had there been some text to read or voice overs. You just have to look at the blurred cartoons to understand that our hero Shaban had some sheeps that were stolen and he goes off to find them. A kind of Middle Eastern version of "Mary Los her Little Lambs". Visually the graphics were very poor to say the least. There are games with cartoon graphics that are wonderful, vibrant and well executed; this unfortunately does not even come close. I suppose the devlopers were going for the hand drawn comic book look but it just looked extremely childish to me. Yes, the main character did look odd and quirky and could be considered funny looking but the graphics were too crude and too dark to apreciate any of the artwork. The music is on a loop and the only good thing I can say is that I thought the sound effects were not bad, that is if you like the sound of sheep crying. Game mechanics is pure adventure with some HO scenes and puzzles to solve; that is if you can actually see them. If you did manage to get pass the wire puzzles without straining your eyes, good for you. By the way, I also imagine that folks will not appreciate the fact that you cannot skip puzzles or at least I could not find a skip button. You do have an interactive map and I will give them some points for that but the hint system was just too vague as were the puzzle instructions. When I say instruct, there are no written text in this game, just drawn images which were difficult to make out. Anyhow despit all the cons, I did manage to complete the trial version with 35 minutes left on the clock. That reallly was long enough for me to know that this game unfortuantely goes directly into my trash bin.
I don't recommend this game.

At first I was weary about this game as I noticed some odd things amiss about it. However after having played the demo, I have to say that I was suprised to discover that despite the many flaws, this was really one of the more challenging IHOGs that I have come across. I am a great fan of interactive HO scenes but in this game, the developers have managed to bring an interactive HOG to a whole new level of difficulty and in doing so, making the gameplay more interesting than I had initially anticipated. I really had to use the hint buttom during the HO scenes which I hardly never do. You really need to work out the logic to some of the items in these scenes. That being said, I cannot really give high marks to the visual and sound quality of the game. I was thrown off with the graphics which were blurry at times and a bit dated. Then there were hand drawn cut scenes which just made the entire game look old and incomplete. I did find the storyline a bit weak: there are no details given as to who you are and why you are actually there to help this town where everyone and everything have suddenly disappeared into thin air. You find yourself investigating and while you do so, you run into several characters that give you background information as to what happened. I also noticed that there was a space on the top right corner screen where a SG was suppose to be. It was omitted as was the task list that is found in the dairy. It is almost as if this game was initially meant to be a CE but someone thought otherwise. Nevertheless upon completeing the demo, I have to say that 1 Moment in Time challenged me a great deal, especially the HO scenes. There are two modes of game play along with custom cursor and voice overs. Game features a diary and thankfully a map which allows you to travel without having to backtrack all the time. Game mechanics involve Interactive HO scenes along with adventure and some puzzles along the way. I expect many will not like this game but for hard core adventure players like myself, this may just tickle those little grey cells as you really play on. I imagine that a walkthrough will be much appreciated as the SG has been omitted. This is by far not an excellent or even a great game but it does have those moments which I believe warrents a credit to spare. I actually enjoyed myself and do want to find out exactly what caused the disappearance of an entire town.
I recommend this game!

In my opinion, one of the best games of 2012. I actually bought the CE and had one of the best gaming experiences. I'm not a great fan of Pirate stories but this had everything in it; Kidnapped daughter, dead Pirate, a curse and a love story. The best thing about this game were the graphics and art work; far superior to what we have seen in a long time. I especially loved the animation work with elaborate cut scenes that were outstanding, especially when the Ship arrives to the museum. I really recommend that you take note of the minute details in every scene, kudos to the devlopers. Voice overs were excellant, well acted and true to form. Storyline was very good and did not waiver at all throughout the game. You start off at the museum and after your daughter is kidnapped by an infamous dead Pirate, you find yourself onboard a ghost ship where the adventure begins. Game features include a journal with a list of tasks and a map. Game mechanics involve the usual HOPA, heavy on the adventure. HO scenes were interactive and you have a choice of playing mahjong instead of finding the itmes on the list. My only one complaint was that the mahjongs were too easy. I loved the puzzles and minigames which were uniquely done. Not too challenging but cleverly created. You also need to collect hidden coins, each coin outlines a part of the story. This part was very well done and when you play, you will understand what I mean. For those who did not buy the CE, I highly recommend that you buy the SE of this game, it is worth every penny. In my initial review I did mention that I found the game a bit on the easy side but it really did not matter, I had a blast playing it and will no doubt replay it often. Enjoy the high seas and save your daughter as you battle wits with the undead pirate. ARRRRGHHH!

Finally a game that fulfills all my expectations and already I am doing the snoopy dance. Our story begins in the town of Martlet and as the Royal Detective, you have been summoned to rescue the citizens from the mysterious statues that have come alive and are raising havoc. As you watch the opening scene, a beautifully drawn world appears before you. Albeit the graphics are a bit blurry but the artwork is beautifully drawn. And so you venture forth and you discover that you are not alone in this adventure: you have an adorable little friend called Rupert with a cut Voice Over who acts like a talking journal and recites the story as you play. In addition he breaks things that get in your way and also provides you with hints depending on what mode of game you are playing; there are three play modes to choose from. You aso have a pet Rooster that grabs objects far from reach. You have options for wide or full screen, custom cursor and different sound effects. Your adventure requires you to collect objects by playing HO scenes that are interactive, solve puzzles and play mini-games. You also have a fantastic interactive map that not only shows progress but can take you to locations. So no need for those running shoes. As an extra bonus, you also need to collect miniatures that are hidden throughout the game and there are achievements and awards to gain as you play. This game is a CE that offers you all the bells and whistles that we gamers expect . Visually the game is beautiful, at times scenes do become grainy but nevertheless, alot of work has been put into this game. Puzzles and minigame are unique and there is a good degree of challenge in the game so everyone will definitely be pleased. However fear not, there is the Strategy Guide which will come handy from time to time. It is indeed a Happy day for me as I go on to purchase this game and continue on my quest to save this town and solve the mystery of the living statutes.
I recommend this game!

I bought this game as a CE and now wish I had waited for the SE. I am a big fan of the developers and am slightly surpirsed at the direction that they took when creating 'Dark Alleys'. Unfortunately, to my dismay, this game is definitely not up to their usual high standard of games and the more I played, the more I felt let down. Unlike their previous games, such as the AZADA series, the challenge and fun factor that I eagerly anticipated and looked forward to just wasn't present here. Unfortuantely 'Dark Alleys' just did not thrill me nor did it offer me the challenge that I expect to find in an Adventure game. It was a long game, took me well over 5 hours but I did give myself alot of intervals. Storyline begins with a missing child #not one of my favorites#, a grusome murder of an entire family and an abondoned Hotel haunted by the past. There are many things I did like about the game and unfortunately many things that I didn't. Visually the graphics were blurry, colors sombre giving the entire game a very depressing look. I did like the artwork and there was voice-overs. Unfortunately It isn't anything we havent seen before. I did however like the live film footages used and ofcourse using real actors to play various parts added some merit to the game. As for Game features, you are given three play modes, a journal, a goal bar which did not work and a hint system that operated well. Suprisingly this game is not a IHOG that I had expected as there were no HO scenes. This game turned out to be adventure with many puzzles and mini-games to solve. I enjoy adventure games but I really wasn't thrown by the overall gaming experience. It did play lie a rountine IHOG without the HO and there was the continous backtracking, clicking everywhere for items to pick up and trying to remember where you need to use them. There were mini-games that varied in dificulty but overall gameplay soon became stiff and tedious. By the time I got half way, I lost sight of the entire storyline and got bored. In a nutshell, what is missing in this game was the crisp sharp graphics, HO scenes and most of all the fun factor. However after having completed the CE, I can say that it is a good SE game to play on a bleak and rainy afternoon.
I recommend this game!

I love cartoons and I love puzzles and put them together, you can get great games. Unfortunately this is not one of them. There are two play modes: casual and normal. The Graphics are sharp and I really did like the artwork. There are voice-overs at intervals but then the endless written dialogues take over. The music is pipe organ and after a while starts getting on your nerves. After you get past the tutorial which for me was a puzzle in itself, you start off your story with a balloon accident and May waking up in a strange town to discover that her brother, Tery, has gone ahead for help. From this point on you have likable characters you meet on the way and various tasks and puzzles to solve. Dont be misled by the fact that this game is catagorised as a HOG, it is not! It is an adventure Puzzle game, some of which include HOS. Navigation was the worst part of this game; you cannot move until you press the compass that gives you the directions which really was the kill joy for me. Then there are the Puzzles that vary in style and Bonus games you can play for extra hints. Had it not been for the extremely vague game instructions and equally vague hints, I might have actually enjoyed this game instead of feeling incredibly stupid at my several attempts to solve a puzzle. Overall the game mechanics are slow and confusing along with too much dialogue which made the game not fun at all. Thank God there is a walkthrough because I am guessing that many who buy this game will need it. As for me, me and my stupidity will pass up on this one.
I don't recommend this game.

What started off as a straightforward HOG, the Haunted Hotel series have gradually evolved with each game and with this latest edition, developers now bring us a new HOPA game that takes place in New Orleans, an ideal setting for any ghost story. The tale of Charles Dexter Ward offers something for everyone; Hidden Objects, Puzzles and Adventure. Lately more and more game developers are using real live film footages which I enjoy and the opening scene of this game was very well done. Unfortunately my excitement slowly began to dissipate as I began my journey. Visually the graphics and animations were too blurry and dark; albeit the story does deal with the occult and death so one does not expect bright colors but I have seen much more superior graphics used in much more darker games. I did however enjoy the sound effects which great amplified the overall atmosphere of the game; the sounds of swamp creatures in the background really set the mood for the game. The music was not really obtrusive and at times, I hardly noticed. Game features included widescreen, stretch screen and custom cursor. There were two game modes, but be warned, there were the odd sparkles here and there in advance mode which I found to be disappointing. Game features included a task list but no journal and no map. Instead, you need to find pages of a missing diary as you roam each scene. There was a very good hint system when used, tell you exactly where to go and what to do. I found that there was no need to use the SG which then raises the question as to why this game qualifies as a CE? Game mechanics were standard, involving collecting objects from non interactive HOS (again with the disappointment) and solve a variety of puzzles along the way. I actually enjoyed the puzzles, some were easy to solve and some needed a bit more elbow grease. There are also achievements to earn along the way which were basically tied to each task done. I really tried to enjoy the game but to my dismay, I found it lacking the elements needed for a challenging game play. Also I could not really invest myself into the story based on the fact that you needed to collect the diary pages to unravel the mystery and with each page, the story gradually begins to unfold. Somehow this process slowed down the game a great deal. Once again I expect many will opt to wait for the SE. However as I am a sucker for a ghost stories and also a fan of the series, I will splurge on this and lateron tonight, put on my headphones, surround myself with the eeriness of the sound effects and set forth to discover what really happened to Charles Dexter Ward.
I recommend this game!
