A famous actor has literally stepped off the screen to kidnap your niece. Now you must find a way into the dangerous and exciting world of the film to save her!
If you ever harbored dreams of stepping into a movie, you can do so vicariously with this game. Takes place in 1930s-1940s. Graphics, special effects, HOGs, mini puzzles are all very good. Coherent plot, storyline, and development to satisfactory, which is to say, happy, ending.
A man goes on the search for his long lost brother who was kidnapped by a witch for his artistic talent and commands him to paint a.... Graphics, storyline, HOGs, mini games were so-so. I bought this as a catch of the day, would have been upset if I had paid full price.
This is one game in which every element was just right. The most seamless story I have encountered. If you are the literary type, this one is for you. You will note the nod to Shakespeare and his cohorts during QE1's time. The characters are beautifully drawn. Graphics are great. HOG and mini games are just right--easy with reasonable challenge. Voice overs, music, animation all contribute to a seamless plot from beginning to end. If you get stuck wondering what to do--use your helper Francis Drake to advance to next scene. I played the SE. You get a peek to a locked door near the end, which probably leads to the CE Bonus game, which I cannot comment on. If you are the type that doesn't like to be tantalized by what's behind the door, then get the CE. The SE by itself was a fantastic game.
I enjoyed this game, which I played in "Royal" mode. This game is good if you like a challenge. I had to use the hint button and walkthrough to make through the mini puzzles. I had to use hint for some of the HOS, which is unusual--it really makes you think.
The graphics are beautiful, good storyline, the ending is quite elaborate. Just when you think you're done, nope, you have 5-6 more chapters to complete.
Not sure why it has the negative reviews. It's a perfectly good game. Some of the actions you need to take are not immediately intuitive, but once you get over the hump, it's smooth sailing for a while until you get stuck.
Anyway, give it a try. I did not play Forbidden Ruins, so I approach this game with no bias whatsoever.
I played this in advanced mode. It's not a very difficult game to play. All the elements are good (music, graphics, storyline, puzzles), but not outstanding.
I bought the CE version based on a review saying it was "long", but it wasn't challenging enough to be long and the bonus chapter started out promising but ended way too soon, like they ran out of steam a 3rd of the way through.
Yes, it was enjoyable, but buy when on sale. I did not find it a great CE value.
I played this game in advanced mode and found it had the right balance of being easy enough to intuit most actions to develop the plot with some mini game challenges along the way. There are tons of objects to collect throughout the scenes--morphing, souvenir cards about NYC landmarks, plaques, musical treble clefs, etc. Number of HOS piles was average to low, but many chapters to play. The bonus chapter was decently long.
The storyline and mystery is decently plausible. It takes place during 1940s US and the main character Laura James looks like Scarlett Johansson. The map feature is nice and allows you to see locations with more tasks and transports you instantaneously.
All in all, this is a great value for the money. It took me several nights to play the game with bonus chapter. Probably could play again and try to find all the morphing objects and collectibles.I liked it enough to research about the other titles in the series. Highly recommend.
I played this game in advanced mode--to prolong the enjoyment (and challenge) factor. The graphics are top notch--characters' appearance are very appealing, music good, background great.
It's not a very hard game to play, even in advanced mode, but I did wander around a few times wondering what I had to do to get out of my rut.
Would have given 5 stars except the ending was a bit anti-climactic. Could have made it more challenging and probably added 5-6 more scenes to slay the villain holding the boy captive. Also more HOS would have made it better. I, for one, enjoy looking for stuff among the HOS trash pile--that's what makes it an HO game.
The visuals of this game was outstanding. Would be great to play again, even if you know how it ends.
I played the game in intermediate mode (no sparkles) and found this to be a great buy and challenging enough to take 2 evenings to complete.
Your character is a novelist of the supernatural invited to a seance, only to find it's fake, but given a key to the House of 1000 doors that appears periodically out of thin air but cannot be entered unless you have the key. You meet ghosts in the house and have to perform certain tasks to allow the ghosts to rest in peace.
There's quite a bit of reading to learn about the backstory of the ghost lives you encounter, a diary recording key findings, clues etc. I didn't notice if there was a map to transport to locations instantly, so I was wandering through the house quite a bit looking for stuff--contributing to the challenge.
There are 35 morphing objects to find among the scenes, 27 picture lockets of the house ancestors to locate. This game has all the standard HO genre schtick and puzzles to develop the story and keep your interest.
The game seems old school compared to the special effects seen in later games, but still highly enjoyable. I like that actions and objects used to move through the plot are intuitive and use common sense--have played games where what's needed to find to get out of a hole is something completely ridiculous and nonsensical. This game has very little of this, so try playing in hard mode.
This is review based on completed SE play.Has a good combo of HOS, actions linked to find HO items, speaking characters, music, and graphics. Seemed like an average storyline, but surprise ending as to who the "vigilante" is. Mini games are easy to challenging--the mini puzzles in 1st chapter are more difficult than those following, so carry on if you get stuck.
There are no morphing objects to find, no achievements to collect, no rooms to decorate BUT you get to choose the characters' dialogue questions & responses AND there are two versions for each of the mini games (Casual or Hard) allowing you to play again and challenge yourself.
Would have given 5 stars if the game had lasted longer and if the mini games could have been played independently in hard or casual mode, but otherwise an excellent buy.
