What was this? It reminded me of some kind of study aid for learning a new language. I only lasted 15 minutes in the trial. It was punishment to play it. It was the opposite of gripping.
Graphics were so sub-standard for nowadays, and I’ve just been playing Love Chronicles: The Sword and the Rose where the graphics blew me away. The extremely fast moving from side to side of the screen started to make me so dizzy. My eyes still haven’t recovered! The 4 gameplay difficulty settings and the many options for sound can’t make up for anything. Best if you try the trial yourself.
I bought the SE version of this game. Beautifully drawn. There was just such a nice, relaxing atmosphere in this game. I was surprised at how nice it was. Lots of old, musty, rooms to discover, with old books and rugs around. Very almost early Disney-like artwork.
Didn’t fit my screen like newer games, but the quality was so good that I really didn’t notice. LOTS OF HOS: mostly regular with minimal interaction and also lots of ones where there was find 15 of these, and 20 of those. Lots of puzzles. You have 33 rose petals to collect, which is part of the game, so it’s included in the SE. There are several times you have assemble something. The parts are already provided, you just have to fix them together according to a diagram. It was easy just not particularly enthralling, but it’s such a small part of the game anyway.
Hint button took about 40 seconds to recharge. I think there were two modes, casual or hard. Only 2 sound controls. The ambient sounds were linked in with the music. Music is appropriate and very nice in my opinion, but does get repetitive. No actual talking, you get the conversation running in bands along the top (older game).
All of the things that I would normally find negative in a game are stunningly negated by the impressive quality of the artwork, and creation of this world. Not an ‘exciting’ game, I found it to be a very relaxing and atmospheric game.

I recommend this game!

Dark Tales™: Edgar Allan Poe's The Mystery of Marie Roget Collector's Edition
A newlywed is threatened, and supernatural forces are afoot!
The story has been described several times by previous reviewers, and in the game description itself, so I’m not going to repeat that. But the following are my thoughts on the rest of this fabulous game!
PLAYER SETTINGS: Include: Casual, Advanced, Hard, and Custom
ART AND GRAPHICS: Great graphics. Nothing dazzlingly over-colorful. Well -constructed, composed background settings. Beautiful lighting and shading creating a “3D” world. Opulent houses, and olde worIde Paris alleyways.
SOUND: The music is separated from the ambient sound! Hurray! And there is a separate voice volume. The music is appropriate.
ATMOSPHERE: Mysterious atmosphere from the get-go, and I got that feeling immediately that said that this was a game that I was going to lose myself in for a while...Lovely magical night-scenes and sounds.
HOPS: Slightly more than in more recent games, and I thoroughly enjoyed them: Mainly word lists, with minimal interaction, a few that are more interactive, some in which you place the image in the picture correctly, and finally, some in which you take the image out of the picture to match up with its silhouette. I really enjoyed these mixes.
PUZZLES: Mosty very straight-forwards, but some a little more difficult.
MORPHING OBJECTS: 16 Morphing objects to collect for an aquarium.
BONUS CHAPTER: Bonus chapter as enjoyable as the main game, and continues the story.
OTHER: Strategy guide, achievements, movies, wallpapers, collectibles, screensavers, music and replayable mini-games and HOS.
As you begin this HOPA, the artwork is unbelievably beautiful and I was immediately drawn into the atmosphere of this story. The mesmerizing quality of the artwork sadly doesn’t continue quite past maybe 1/2 of the way through, but I still found the whole game play very enjoyable. I still found the graphics somewhat better than the more recent “Love Chronicles: A Winter’s Spell. “ In fact I’m currently playing “Love Chronicles: The Sword and the Rose” which is the one even before, and that has beautifully drawn graphics, sort of like penciled paintings! After playing some 3* games recently and some that are much more on the spooky side, this was a breath of sweet, fresh air. Lovely, but not blaring colors and relaxing ambient sounds. With the music on low, the whole combination transported me into another land, and I was very happy to be there!
In addition, there was a very satisfying sound in the HOPS when you clicked on the correct item, both a mild clunk and tinkle together. Peaceful, tuneful, slow new age-type music. Lots of HOPS for the HOPS lovers and a mix of all kinds! Silhouettes, fragmented, word lists… Also lots of puzzles.
The only negative thing I have to say about this game is that the ambient sounds (wind, water, birds etc.) are tied in with the music. I never like that in any game, because I want the option of turning the music down after a while, or completely.
All in all, a top quality, fantasy game. Only a little bit spooky and creepy, like skulls, skeletons, some ghosts that ask for help and the morphing face of the princess being taken over by an invading darkness.

Graphics are a bit fuzzy looking overall but I found the game quite enjoyable, just not great. The sound is not tied –in with the music, and there are constant relaxing background sounds. I liked the artistry and the story was fairly good. HOS not too many.
This is one of those rare times I couldn’t actually finish a game, because nothing in it was interesting enough. The graphics were horrid and looked washed-out and green. The story was just OK.

I loved all the rooms, passages and portals, except for the last portal which I found tedious and began relying on the hint button more to get it to go faster. The HOS and puzzles were fun. It was truly enjoyable for me NOT having to do a silhouette-type or highIy interactive HOS (the latter of which just makes that bit like the rest of the game). Instead they were word-picture and occasional interaction. I found some of the puzzles difficult and passed on them.
I bought the SE and even the SE has the morphing objects! What a cool surprise! There are sound effects/ambient sounds are constant and changing, which I like: things opening and closing, crumbling, turning (there aren’t any silences), sometime frogs, other times crickets, a torch burning raucously and so on. There are no irritating sounds. Even the music is nice, and it isn’t constant. The music is more of an atmosphere enhancer rather than a tune. The attention to detail in the scenes and the artwork is very nice, and the combination of this and the sounds create a good atmosphere.
I can definitely see strong familiarity between this game and the House of 1000 doors series, so the same developers must be involved somewhere. I bought this as a freebie! And what a freebie is turned out to be!
Now in 2015 there are a number of different types of games available that you can rotate between, even within the same genre, to avoid boredom. This is definitely a spooky –type game.
