For 25 years, you thought you had no family. But one night, a man steps through a mirror from another world, claiming to be your uncle... changing your life forever.
An absolutely fantastic game! This is one of my favorite games. Everything about it is top-notch: the artwork, the graphics, the story. I love it!! Every second of it was enjoyable, from start to finish.

Without warning, a group of mysterious figures arrives and reduces your village to flames and rubble. What do they want... and who is controlling them?

It starts off good and I’d say I enjoyed the first ½ to maybe even 2/3rds. I did also enjoy the raven help friend, collecting the raven coins and collecting the 4-leaved clovers. But then I started to find the whole thing going downhill. As the plot revealed itself, it just didn’t work for me. It lost tension and became more and more Scooby-Dooish, but without the humor.
The sound effects, fairly nice graphics and often elaborate looking rooms didn’t really make up for it. The outdoor scenes were quite nice, but not spectacular.
I found two things annoying: endless clicking trying to get an object to “take” to the place it was meant to go. Sometimes I would try 5-6 times, knowing, I’d got it right, but the zone in which you had to click was tiny. Also, although the Shadowgraphs were interesting to work out, I then had to sit through what felt like hours (even though it was probably only 5 seconds) watching them move around the stage before I could move on to the next one (I guess I was just trying to get through it),
Eventually I was relieved when the game was over. But like I said, the first half was good.
Earlier reviewers have already described the story in detail, so I won’t repeat what they’ve already said. But here’s why I enjoyed this game: Sound, glorious sound! Birds, pigeons, water lapping the shore, crackling fires, bubbling potions…Also fantastic skies, trees, shrubs and wildflowers everywhere…just a large helping of nature, hillsides and lakes, adventure and magic. The graphics aren’t cartoony. The Gandalf-like character (Maaron), with the exact same voice, the mention of Halflings at the beginning, as well as the horsemen themselves (reminiscent of the Nazgul), give you the feeling that you are entering a LOTR world. You find a dwarf friend, Folnur, who is able to give you advice from time-to-time, and there are references to centaurs and elves (Forest Hunters). This game isn’t eerie or creepy and neither is it cutesy.
Another reviewer mentioned that this is the same developer that did the House of 1000 Doors series and I can totally see the same level of awesome detail here. This music is like orchestral music you would get accompanying a movie and isn’t constant. I played it for much longer than I would in other games.
The HOS are a bit TOO interactive for my liking because you’re required to find items step-by-step, find an item, them use it to find another, and they’re ALL like that. Personally I’d prefer it if they did a mix. I ended up missing just the regular HOS. The puzzles were enjoyable. I liked the fact that I had to visit a scene several times to get all the tasks done, because when the scenes are that nice to look at/be immersed in, it’s a joy to go back to them. I too am a morphing objects fan and this game has ‘em! In the same manner, you also have to collect small parts for a machine that can be anywhere in the scene. So two things to collect from scenes!
This is a pretty long and complex game, but I only had to use the strategy guide once in the bonus game, generally the hints were sufficient. Actually they’ve been pretty clever because of the way they end the main game with such suddenness, it leaves you wanting more. You feel a bit like the kids who tumble out of the wardrobe, back to your own time, but really wish you were still in Narnia! Having said that, the bonus game was just ok, and although it does continues the main story, I found it a bit of let down. However, I often find that with bonus games, so it could just be me, not being able to get into them with the main quest being over.
All in all, a top quality, A+ game, and worth buyng the CE for me for the morphing objects. I hope they continue this series!
Yes, if you love fairy tales, like me, you’ll probably like this one. The good things about this game, was that it was an adventure, there were just the right amount of HOPS which I enjoyed (not too many and they were nice to look at) and it was …a fairytale! Like all good fairy tales it had reminders of how difficult it can be to protect your heart from all the negative experiences life can throw your way, but it also had just the right amount of feel-good factor and magic.
These are the reasons I didn’t give it a 5-star rating: (1) Ambient sounds and environmental sounds were strangely lacking. They are REALLY important to my enjoyment of any game: for example the wind, the weather, water at a fountain etc. What I found was that the sounds would only appear when you zoomed in on an area because there was something to pick-up/obtain and then when you backed out they’d disappear. Since I always turn music off after a short while because it usually starts to bug me, traveling around from scene to scene was an oddly silent experience. In most games, there are plenty of sounds happening in the background, so did my game download incorrectly? I didn’t contact BFG, so I’m not sure. I’m hoping that it WAS an error and that this is not going to become the norm. However I did read another reviewer saying a similar thing, that it was a very quiet game. There were the typical “game” sounds for when you click on something correctly, and the cut scenes had the complete set of sounds. (2) Also, visually, the scenes were nice, but not really what you’d call stunning or beautiful. There was no “wow, I have to stop and stare at this gorgeous scene for a few seconds.” Not for me, anyway (3) Puzzles were just ok.
Overall the game was enjoyable and the story was good.
I love spacious old buildings, which have ornate detailing. Whether they’re castles, manor houses or old museums, I find them all to be full of charm and mystery. The time travel portion of this HOPA story fits well into the setting, bringing the history of the building and what it contains a bit closer. I found the story and the characters likeable and done well. I felt like I was on a mission. I wasn’t on the edge of my seat, but I was intrigued by what was to be discovered behind the next door, down the next hall or through the next encounter. I loved all the rooms and hallways with their high ceilings, refined and antique furnishings and their various shelves and cabinets of collections. The outdoors is brought indoors to you through numerous large, arched, latticed-windows. You’ll get glimpses of clouds and trees, and sometimes hear birdsong. The overall effect is of spaciousness, symmetry and beauty.
This HOPA game had the right balance of HO scenes for me (not too many) and I enjoyed the puzzles. The quality of the graphics and the artwork, were both topnotch. In the Collector’s Edition that I played, the collectibles and morphing objects were fun to find. I like to play a mix of games, and after playing some fantasy games with great outdoor scenes and landscapes and then a couple of more spooky games recently, I was definitely ready for a change and found myself totally immersed in this one. I am currently playing the bonus game.
To save your father from a hideous monster, you've decided to sacrifice your own freedom. Now you must journey through a strange and magical land before time runs out!
HOPA with gorgeous landscapes, and details. Thoroughly engaging story. I loved this game from start to finish. There is no horror in this game - there is magic. This would safely land in the fairy tale category. This game entrances you with its well -constructed, glowing, night-gardens, outdoor scenery, and imposing but cozy castle. Butterflies, flowers, jewels and great lighting. Loved it. Hope I continue to find more like this one. This is my favorite type of game. I kept looking at the scenes, and going, “Wow, look at this!” I thought the balance was just right, the HOS (not too many), and the puzzles were interesting and varied. The adventuring part of the story was questy and well thought out. The story itself had that feel-good factor. The story is well described in the game description. Filled the whole screen, without getting that stretched look even at my max resolution of 1366 x 768.
A lovely HOPA with a huge dose of the outdoors. If you’re in need of trees, hills, grass, wild flowers, garden flowers, lakes, streams, ponds, and some old buildings, then you’re in for a treat. If you’re ready for something questy but not dark or creepy, then you’ll enjoy this. I think anyone could play this game (it’s not geared toward any gender in particular). Filled the whole screen even with my max resolution being 1366 x 768. I loved every minute of this game.
