I loved all the rooms, passages and portals, except for the last portal which I found tedious and began relying on the hint button more to get it to go faster. The HOS and puzzles were fun. It was truly enjoyable for me NOT having to do a silhouette-type or highIy interactive HOS (the latter of which just makes that bit like the rest of the game). Instead they were word-picture and occasional interaction. I found some of the puzzles difficult and passed on them.
Even the SE has the morphing objects! What a cool surprise! There are sound effects/ambient sounds are constant and changing, which I like: things opening and closing, crumbling, turning (there aren’t any silences), sometime frogs, other times crickets, a torch burning raucously and so on. There are no irritating sounds. Even the music is nice, and it isn’t constant. The music is more of an atmosphere enhancer rather than a tune. The attention to detail in the scenes and the artwork is very nice, and the combination of this and the sounds create a good atmosphere.
I can definitely see strong familiarity between this game and the House of 1000 doors series, so the same developers must be involved somewhere. I bought this as a freebie! And what a freebie is turned out to be!
Now in 2015 there are a number of different types of games available that you can rotate between, even within the same genre, to avoid boredom. This is definitely a spooky –type game.
Wacky landscapes, a bit Salvador Dali-ish and a bitTron-ish, with nice crisp, clear graphics. But for some reason, the story felt a bit like a sci-fi cartoon for the under 9’s mixed in with the atmosphere of an educational documentary. For me, it missed the mark for exciting, but it was pretty relaxing and interesting. I’d say if you’re looking for a more laid back game, this might be it. You could easily have a break from this game and go back to it days and days later (which is what I did). See the reviewer of March 9 2014 for full HOPA breakdown of gameplay details.
Google, Bigfishgame walkthrough for this game and it will appear. Didn’t need the walkthrough though because the hint button more or less tells you what to do if you’re stuck
A murderous figure in a red mask haunts the streets of a small French town, and the mayor needs your help to track him down. But you soon discover that the mysterious Red Masque might not be the real criminal…
You know it was ok. There were bits I enjoyed quite a bit, and other parts that were ok. However, compared to Edgar Allen Poe, The Black Cat, or The House of Usher, it just wasn’t in the same league. Graphics were nice, not excellent. I enjoyed the outdoor scenes more than the indoor ones. Didn’t really feel that compelled by it. Puzzles were ok. Some HO scenes were interactive with find the silhouette and then there was find 15 of these and 15 of those.
For a freebie, it was good. If you google the walkthrough for this by Bigfishgames, you’ll find it. For some reason it doesn’t come up as a walkthrough if you’re on site and you go to “community.”
NOTE: NO HINT button, except for on the HOS. The CE has a strategy guide. Luckily I read other reviewers mentioning this, and already by Chapter 2 I had referred to it twice. However, BFG does have a walkthrough you can refer to.
What I like about this game is the type of graphics it has. BEAUTIFUL! It’s like walking around in one of the paintings that are hanging on the wall in the house you’re exploring! It is a wealthy person’s house and so the wallpaper, the furniture, the building, the details…they’re all sumptuous, ornate, and fancy. The lighting and shading is done SO WELL, that the game’s look is a combination of cozy, extravagant and mysterious. I guess they took a lot of care over it! The detail reminds me of the game ‘Curse of the Nightingale’ and roaming around at night, a little of Dark Parables: Briar Rose and Dark parables: The Exiled Prince. The fact that it doesn’t fit my whole screen really doesn’t matter because the items in the HOS are mostly adequately sized. After having played a decent amount of very enjoyable HOPAs that are more recent e.g. 2013-2015, this one is different because it has relatively more HOS and they’re of the word-list type and mostly not interactive. I LIKED this for a change. The atmosphere of this game kept a steady grip on me throughout. It isn’t a horror game, it’s mysterious.
Another reviewer mentioned that when you click on items you get a rather annoying sound and I agree with this. After the initial loveliness of the stormy weather sounds, the music does tend to dominate and in most games I have to switch most music off after a while. But since the outdoor sounds are tied in with the music, so I too ended up playing in silence some of the time. I prefer it when games have more division of sound control. There are no personalized options available except for a choice between casual or expert mode. This game after all is a few years old now (2010-2011?) In casual mode, the hint button takes about 20 seconds on the HOS. Also I bought the CE which says has a Bonus game, but I really couldn’t find one anywhere. I tried all the regular places, like the Extra’s and just looking out for a separate selection button, but it wasn’t there. Maybe I did something?
I’ve come to the conclusion that it would be really good if DEVS could make SOME of their games with the balance of HOPAs in favor of more HOS(like this one), and some of them with the balance in favor of the adventure component and to make it known in the game description. Personally I also like a MIX of interactive and non-interactive (not all interactive, because it just makes it like the rest of the game).
Psst! Click on the chicken! Stand still as it makes it way past you…

Someone has stolen two powerful magic doves from your kingdom, and the consequences could be disastrous. Embark on an extraordinary journey to stop the thief.
...I was umming and ahhing about whether to play this one, because I tend to avoid anything that sounds too chilling. However, even though I was close to being appalled a couple of times, somehow the storyline explains the madness and I actually found myself having empathy for the main character gone evil. I suppose it helps that he’s terribly handsome! The atmosphere is very enticing with the gothic castle.
One of my favorite games. Everything about it is top-notch: the artwork, the graphics, the story. I love it!! Every second of it was enjoyable, from start to finish.
I recommend this game!
