Easy enough HO game to pass the time on. There's a murder, you are framed, you find out what really happened. - Artwork and sound is lovely - Medium difficulty actually was pretty easy - Puzzles were of a good wide variety, and I enjoyed the take on HO of shadow objects or clues to get objects. - Interesting to play first one part of a couple and then the other, but that didn't effect game play - Story line - I didn't really feel strongly emotionally invested in it, and that's the clincher for the score.
So overall, it's ok - but I won't be writing home about it.

For casual HOG gaming in a short time span a 4 star
Want a casual HOG that is not too long and has a decent mystical story line. This will do the job.
Review based on CE, played on on Advanced setting, no hints used. Main game took 4 hours. Bonus chapter took 1 hour.
Pros: - Great art work and music, giving good atmosphere - Decent story line, which didn't drag on. - Map! (Fast travel and identifies outstanding objectives so you can avoid using hints) - Simple and clean game play. - Good variety of puzzles. Not high difficulty at all. - 'Photos' section in bonus area made me laugh - Funny to have pigeons as collectibles. Nice touch.
Cons: - Voice acting was too 'hammed up' for my personal taste. Others may like it. - Most of the HOGs had a items you could see where clickable without looking at the list. (Didn't bother me for causal playing, but might bother others who are well into HOGs). - Some people may find the game too short. For me the length was right for the story line, otherwise it would have dragged on. It is one of those 'fine line' preferences. - Bonus chapter didn't really go anywhere for me, so I'd say playing the main game is sufficient.
I've given a good solid happy 3 stars for this game. Not as absorbing or long as some other HOGs I've played, but still very good and worthwhile playing.
If you are after a good short sharp casual and not too strenuous blast of gaming for the weekend - then this would meet the criteria and make it a 4 star for you. Enjoy.
Mystery, a bit of murder, bit of romance, family secrets and decent story line which is not the 'usual'. All of this wrapped in a tightly contained small town setting, making for a challenging HOPA.
Pros: - Lovely graphics and sound, really good attention to detail - Good variety of puzzles - If you like puzzles of medium - hard challenge, then this game will satisfy. If you don't - you can skip to carry on with the story - Closely contained town environment, so you get really familiar with the setting as if you were there. (Also a Con) - Hints were great to have to hand, to help push the game along - Bonus content funny and worthwhile :)
Cons: - I would have liked a quick map, as I got tired of walking backwards and forwards a lot of the time in the same areas - I got tired of seeing the same areas over and over, it wore me out a bit. Though it ties itself to the purpose of the game. - I felt the game dragged a bit (see reasons above) - Doing an action often triggered overly dramatic music when it wasn't really merited.
I think advanced players (and those with more of large file game liking) will like this more than newbies - especially because of the harder puzzles.
A quite challenging HOPA game, especially in terms of the puzzles. Not the fastest paced game ever, and won't knock your socks off - but it is put together in such considered manner, beautifully presented, and has a highly distinctive flavour - that I cannot help but give it a 4.
If you just want to build things, chill out, not stress about time and restarting levels - then this will fit the bill.
Travel 9 themed kingdoms and deal with the disputes and challenges in each one.
For an intermediate player, the 45 levels took me about 12 hours of play. Different levels require different special buildings to be put up, and you face challenges such as fires, thieves, and crazy mad men tearing the place apart. No difficulty settings to change, and very easy to get to grips with as a game.
Pros: - Nice scripts for the characters, giving some colour to the game e.g. bossy, wimpy, jealous, greedy, lazy - all covered! - If you want to change strategy, you don't have to restart, just demolish and build, or build and demolish, in order to move buildings about to achieve objectives. - Money and materials are not really that challenging to get, even if you are being robbed. It is a really relaxed game. - Simple clear graphics, screen size does not go full screen on my laptop but graphics so clear it was fine.
Cons: - Repetitive music but not too intrusive (useful to keep sound on to hear when something is happening) - Simplicity (but that is also it's pro!)
Preferences: - I'd have liked something to add an extra challenge to the game, some sort of difficulty setting or timer. There was just a little extra missing for me (I think I must just like a bit of stress!)
All in all a great game, especially for beginners, or those who just want a chilled out time building things with no stressing. Definitely a nice newbie game.
You came to the town of Brownville, Louisiana hoping to find a new job. But you weren't expecting to stumble upon a strange adventure in a world filled with beauty and danger!
HOPA with a concept similar to Jumanji, but instead of board game, think card game.
I quite enjoyed this game, even with a not overly original story line. Definitely worth the purchase, I don't feel cheated.
There are are about 5 or 6 themed "levels" which need a specific power to complete, which you get by finding a playing card and getting it powered up.
The CE and bonus chapter, advanced level, took 3 evenings to complete, playing for a few hours each time.
Pros: - A companion creature which can get to hard to reach places, that is not too "saccharine" and overly cute. It made me smile. - Clear graphics and good music - You can find puzzle pieces in the game, which impact the bonus extra puzzle game you get to through the menu. Nice touch. - I found it interesting how my opinion of certain characters changed over the course of the game. - HO were nice and clear, and some objects you have to build up or click certain areas to make actions happen. - Good mix of HO and Puzzles - Really good bonus chapter, and bonus extras section - I normally don't bother looking at these on games, but I did on this one.
Cons: - Some parts of the game require specific areas to be clicked. Annoying when I clicked hint and it was telling me to do what I had just tried to do. - A bit repetitive in terms of theme: get a card, do some puzzles, power up card, move on to next level - I lost a bit of power towards the end of the game, possibly because of repetition - I wasn't keen on some of the levels, they felt a bit short in scope later on in the game. - Some of the puzzles I wasn't keen on and found them 'click' heavy. Not great if there is a lag between click and action, and you have several actions that need to take place. Slows things down. In the bonus chapter there was an annoying puzzle I couldn't skip.
The annoyingly slow to play puzzles which felt unresponsive would be only reason why I give a 3 and not a 4. I definitely found this game worthwhile playing compared to some other HOPAs I've experienced. I mark this 3.5 ! :)
If you play the demo you will get a good idea of expectation for the rest of the game.
A change from HOPA and plays more like a turn based board game.
There are 3 ages for multiple generations to make their way through. At the end of each age there is a Challenge, which will determine if your family survives into the next age.
Your families live their lives through various social classes. You can chose a life of discovering a new skill in your current class, do heroic deeds, or advance socially towards ultimate ruler-ship - another way to win the age.
For your turn, you either 1) Work - to make tokens, or get married / make children 2) Move - using tokens, to gain advancement points 3) Children - decide whether they: work, play, or use a token to learn a skill.
This game works as a standalone game. There is no sense of buying 'part' of a game, even though step 2,3,4 etc will come in future.
I _really_ enjoyed playing this game. I started off clueless and struggled a bit with the written help instructions, but even so, I was addicted to my imaginary lineage developing before my eyes. Even a week later I was having discoveries which adjusted my gaming strategy.
It was the subtle things that effected game play I enjoyed e.g. Siblings stealing tokens if they did not get on with each other growing up! Neighbours being jealous or friendly, making game play easier or harder. Rites of passage defining the personality of your family head which in turn impacts how you may react to life events in future.
Playing the demo will give you a feel for the game play that is consistent throughout the whole of the game.
2 sides, only one outcome.... Victory!!! Pit your bugs against those of the enemy tick, feeding your army on nectar and destruction!
A nice 2 sides of the screen versus game, where bugs travel down paths and you have to either: survive for a specific time, destroy the opposition's hive, or rescue a bug warrior to join your army.
The main driver in the game is 'what bug am I going to get next?' which keeps things interesting. The graphics are lovely, the music good (though repetitive). As a change from typical HO gaming - blissfully different.
I had a similar issue as Iacard who has reviewed this game too. On some levels to make your bugs come out of the bottom entrance is 'clicky-tricky'. I clicked further forward of the arrow which seemed to work most of the time.
A nice short and simple game (Took me 2 evenings), with a rock hard end level. The demo will give you a good feel for the game-play, which is pretty consistent throughout.

Stop here if you want a HOPA with tops game play and story line accompanied by great graphics and sounds.
I have been waiting so very long to give a 5* rating. This game completely delivers in terms of play-ability and enjoyment with some feeling of meat and substance to the story, without being too heavy in HOs.
Pros: - Good clear HO scenes - Good duration - I played over the course of a week in the evenings. Game is still long if you removed HOs / puzzles. - Map: identifies locations where there is an action remaining, and also enables fast travel (invaluable!) - An awesome cat companion who helps you out. - You don't need to have played all the other MCF games to enjoy this one (I haven't.) The references back to other MCF games are easily seen, and the important ones are explained as part of the story line.
Bonus content: - Bonus chapter in CE worthwhile. - Shop - buy objects for the cat to interact with outside of the main game - quite fun and funny at times! - I've just seen there is also a 'secret room' that I had missed before <happy squeak> which looks like HO games.
Cons: (And I am nit-picking here) - I'd have liked more character interactions. They are short, so little chance for emotional investment. The voice acting and animation you do get is great. - Towards the end of the game the pace dropped, and I felt restless, with game play getting a bit 'samey.' - It seems some people had a problem with performance and jerky graphics. I had the same at the start, but fortunately a reboot was enough to sort the issue out for me.
Big Elephant and MCF - lovely lovely game. Thank you!

If you like _A LOT_ of variety and challenge in terms of HO, M3, solitaire and shooting spiders (!) - in order to save the kingdom - you will like this game.
Classification of the game on BF site is 'HO' which is misleading - so FYI: M3 dominates very much in this game.
If you want to pick up an object or perform an action, this usually activates a game puzzle - I quite liked this change from the norm. However I can see that for those who want more of an adventure game and to get through the story, this may prove frustrating.
Casual, Expert and Hardcore options available. I played on Expert and the M3s were not timed - probably because it's really hard getting objects to the bottom of the screen on some levels. Fortunately if you want to move on with the story you can skip skip skip!
It is the difficulty of some of the puzzles which gives the game a decent duration - and for those puzzlers out there - it will appeal. If you skip a lot, then you will find you reach the end of the game very quickly in a couple of hours. The story line is not that extensive, and the primary focus feels more on the games.
Negatives: - I had a number of buggy issues happen in one session, so had to restart the game. - Another review indicates you have to make a character name at start or you will have problems and have to restart - I'd have preferred the character text to appear more quickly or fully appear when I 'clicked'
That said, I did enjoy this game a lot for the way it stands out as being very different from the usual games I have played.

Looking for a solid HO game? This is a good offering with a decent enough story line for a HO game.
Game play: - Regular or Advanced modes available. (On advanced took me about 3-4 hours play. Bonus chapter only 1 mode availble, and it took me about 1-2 hours.) - Not a huge game in terms of numbers of rooms - there is no map. Not needed really. - Hints are is room specific and glowing areas are displayed where actions remain. Up to you if you want to activate a hint or not at that point. - Click areas in some HO games were 'very' specific - A fair bit of returning to previous areas to find reactivated HOS - Definitely more HO than puzzle adventure game, so worth bearing that in mind if you have specific preferences. - The bonus chapter is compact in terms of areas to go to, so it is very quick between one HO game and the next
Notes on story, visuals and sound: - Graphics are great, with some fun little features when you click on certain pictures or skeletons. - Sounds and voices - so good, that nothing jars your attention in a negative way at all. - Understated humour in some parts of the game, that I appreciated. (Nothing like a Ferris wheel to cheer you up! ;) - Really cool monsters and great story clips in atmospheric brown / white (sepia) style. - Simple story line - told very well. Though, I'd have liked something slightly more complex.
Scoring: (3/4) Reasons for not more stars is down to my personal preference for adventure and puzzles, rather than HO, as I found the HOs stopped the flow of the story for me, and I had wanted more in the story than was offered. However if you are into HO's add an extra star to the above score, as I think you will like this one indeed!
