I kind of get the feeling this was designed for young girls to play considering the visuals, that almost all the people were female. It was so easy and there were no challenges at all, through all the levels it was the same game play, work through the obstacles and then flee. The CE levels were not worth the double price either. I would not recommend this UNLESS you are buying a game for young children and you want it clean and easy.
For the first 2 or 3 levels, they stop the play to tell you what you need to do--like building a food place so the rescuers can eat. You can't do anything during the time the call-out pops up and the building is finished so it slows the play. They also do not tell you why you are building the place at that moment instead of choosing a factory or whatever else is available, they just don't allow you to do anything else but what they dictate. I've played about 5 levels now and still don't know why I'm building this instead of that. There is also no gratification after doing things--unlike Rescue Team where you get a sort of satisfaction knowing the trapped people have all been rescued or fires put out or whatever. I was hoping this would be a good game until a new Rescue Team shows but I'm not even going to finish the demo and certain am not going to buy a game so tedious.
In every scene there are cats you have to find (I think maybe to release the CE part?) and I like finding cats. Otherwise, you just find the hidden items in the list. The between puzzles aren't serious challenging (which is good since I play as the last game before bed and don't want any stress). You "travel" to a lot of places. It's nothing new but it's better than a lot of the other travel HOs and probably on a par with the "Beautiful Earth" HO.
It's still the same game play--gathering, building, accomplishing the goals--but now they've made some small changes but good changes. One of the best one is all those "secret hidden objects" are shown to you so you know what you're looking for but they are still slight enough and hidden pretty well so it's not a cakewalk. I need cataract surgery so I can't see as clearly as I once did so this is a big challenge for me since I can't always tell what in heck I'm looking for. They seemed to have changed artists on the "cover" pics (like the one fronting the game) and the little workers are now in judo gi but they're the same go-getters. A few new types of things to deal with, new wild things, but it still feels like Roads of Rome and moves quite well. I've only begun play and am looking forward to playing some more today. I love all of these "Rome" games..
I've played some of their past games and found them a little tedious. Outside of the fact that I love New York and miss it a lot now that I live elsewhere, I found this game relaxing, no pressure, so I play this last before I shut down the computer and go to bed. I think I even like the puzzles although at the moment I can't remember all of them, they aren't overwhelming challenging or time consuming unlike similar games that expect you to play a whole game of mahjon or cards. I'm working through the collector's section, one site per night before bed.
But I've always found New Yankee kind of boring. I've had this game for a couple of weeks and have still not worked my way through it since I only play a level and have to exit because I start falling asleep. Not a good sign. It's pretty typical of the versions that came before with only one or two very slight changes. I think this may be my last time I even bother trying this game.
A nicely simple HO that takes you to different worldly sites and doesn't stress me out since I play untimed. It's just a really nice change from the other HOs, no real storyline which I don't need anyway (and often skip over in other games).
Time management games are my favorite games these days. I like the challenge. But Golden Rails was boring. I find it difficult to believe that this is the same developer who did Rose Riddle (wonderful games) since I've played both Rose Riddles 10 times of more and still find them fun, wish they'd stuck with that game and put out a few more versions. With the exception of looking for that owl, everything else was of so little challenge I'd decide to go wash dishes or gather my tax return papers in the middle of game play. It wasn't the worst but it is close to it. This game presented almost no challenge except for time, all the "obstacles" were a little too easy to handle. I love a good challenge, even if it means having to replay the same level several/many times to get it. Too many TM games have become too easy and lackluster.
and I don't know why. It was a HOB game, nothing really challenging, didn't get to see much of Treffenburg, didn't get to know any of the people much, didn't even get to eat and drink some of the local foods. So I can't figure out why, 3 days after I finished the game, I am still thinking about it. I'm not much into collectibles or antiques, that period of time is of little interest to me. But I want to play other very similar games right now until some new TM favorites finally come out.
I think that's how I felt about the first one too. I have been replaying my old games a little too much so I decided to buy this--of course, not on a bonus or double-punch day or anything. It was an okay game. Some levels are rather difficult because if you don't do certain things in order, you have to restart and try something else. One level I actually went online to see if I could get any help but after eating a sandwich, it all became clear to me what had to be done and it worked. Unlike Rescue Team, Roads of Roman, Incredible Dracula or Northern Tales (etc.), I don't have any feelings for any of the characters, they're just running around like ants and that's maybe why I don't like this game more. And I have no idea what this Magic Box is about, didn't get into the storyline since you don't need the story to play the levels.
