A game that is not a cookie cutter...you get to decide whether to use the shrinking potion and you only get a limited number of uses. That is a real change up from games thus far.
The game is set in a fantasy world that is beautiful. For those of you who want realism...well this is not it...but you are here to have fun and escape so...try it with that perspective maybe you'll become a fan of strange potions in magical bottles and elves and genies with strangely shaped heads.
HO scenes require a lot of different interactions. What to do with the knife? Well after some trials you find out. Then another one has shapes...others have done this, but you have to open presents to find out where the shapes go.
There is a lotus and you have to match the petals to a center design. The designs are rune like making them more interesting.
You are trying to free your father and he is in the clutches of an octopus. There are also snakes and snails that pounce as though to bite with sharp teeth. Don't be scared, it's a game that can allow you to face those fears totally safely. Everything is so well drawn so pretty even if scarey that one can be delighted and charmed.
There are potions to be made and the making can be puzzling. There are skeleton hands to open to get through a door. The puzzles can be skipped, but they are not too hard and can be mastered with some consideration of the mechanism.
There is a phoenix who opens up portals that move you through the game. There are cards to find that I am sure are part of the CE achievements. I did not see any morphing objects, but I only played the short demo. There are the usual helpers on the way and of course the villains who want to keep you from your goal, but the landscape of the place is innovative and intricately drawn.
There is a lot of pleasure in being in a place that is so pretty and full of unusual things. There were a few puzzles that were just too easy and I hope that they will not take over the puzzle genre. In the demo there was a mix of easy and hard so I was OK with that.
I'd like to hear from someone who has done the whole game as to whether the bonus makes it worth the CE . I do like that one can keep the hint button and skip buttons to a very short time so as to get through the demo more quickly.
After I buy the game, when I have a credit to do so, I will start it again from the beginning because I know I used that shrinking potion when I should not have and we are warned we can not make more...but the fun of these games is of course that unlike life, there are do overs and nothing really counts or has real consequences. And the snakes will not really bite...have fun...
The best change the devs could make in these games would be to make the numbers that tell us how many squares there are brighter and more visible. So annoying to have worked out a lot of the puzzle and lose out because one does not see that a number has been taken up or is still there...the numbers are just too pale. Also, since I play them over, it would be nice to be able to skip puzzles. Make these changes and my rating goes up. The fun of these is simply exercising logic so the game does not require much imagination for the devs to put together. So please just make them brighter...maybe put in some color...
Well I'm glad they have a two fer this weekend because this has to be bought as a CE since the description of the game tells us that the bonus game finishes the story...not sure I like that arm twisting, but I have to say this is a good game. There are a lot of different kinds of puzzles, but my favorite was figuring out the order of events to solve the murder story line. I was a bit confused by having as a woman to fight off such a menacing man, but it really added to the excitement...push him, punch him, slap him and then run for your life and hide...wow that was a lot of action for the protagonist of a game, never saw one do that before. I really liked the HO scenes with the different kinds of interaction. There are also quite a few music oriented games requiring putting the notes in the right place...or to realize you are finding a class of instrument ...or to play a note higher or lower...somewhat simple but fun.
I had never hot wired a vehicle before, never sabotaged a janitor's drink...and there was also a HO that alternated between finding things and using a given thing to make the thing found...what I am getting at is that this is a game with plenty of innovation, and the bartender has a knowing and pleasant look...that was a relief given the threatening figure one is struggling against. So the game has levels of interaction where one has helpers and villains and people who don't give a hoot all of whom you get to manipulate to continue the plot. That is part of what makes the story more engaging. The only reason I did not give five stars on visual / sound quality is that a number of the scenes are too dark and one can not see the searched for item as it gets lost in a dark on dark setting. You devs need to realize that seeing what is going on is essential and dark does not make it creepy, only makes it miserable for us to hunt and have no idea there is something where it can not be seen. You might consider putting in a lighten the screen up option for those of us who are not impressed by this kind of hardship...for me it is not gameworthy, only frustrating. However, this game fortunately only faltered in that way a few times and for the most part was well lit and colorful. Of course you should try the game to see if you like it, you have to like Jazz and a New Orleans ambiance, but if you are running out of time to take advantage of this week's two fer...just get it...I am pretty sure you will enjoy it.
In this ghostly continuation of the Fear for Sale series, you've discovered a luxury ocean liner bears an eerie resemblance to a ship that vanished years ago.
There was a lot to do, so I suppose not everything can be really new and innovative. The game is solid and the story does engage one in the act of getting on with it and solving the murder.
There was a star map and one had to figure out which stars matched a constellation. Although we have seen this before, the way this one was done was different from others.
The Hidden Obj scenes have some new aspects as in one you have to change the screen picture to get to some of the objects.
There were morphing objects and a number of other collectibles that went to different categories that somehow related to getting on with the game, but I did not figure out if they were really needed. If they are, then how will the SE form compare? That question arises because I am not sold on this as a CE even though there is a lot to do and the game play is interesting. I did not feel that the puzzles really got me thinking...There is a model of a ship and one has to place pieces in their correct position...that was too simplistic for me to get any pleasure out of solving it...and my ego was not gratified when, having accomplished that, I got told I am a genius LOL. I liked better the puzzle that had me matching half of a figure to a known figure but that seemed rather random as I attempt to really find the elements that make one answer correct rather than it amounting to a bunch of guess work. One of my favorites was the one where one has to plan out how to get boat shapes into the correct slot. That actually took planning and strategy...those are the kinds of puzzles I like.
So as usual, I am asking for my friendly other fish to 'school' me when the SE comes out if the game play is up to par or if the CE is worth it in the long run.
I am going to wait to buy this game, but I will probably get it either as a CE or SE...
After investigating a series of ritual murders on the foggy streets of London, detective James Voodoo discovers a supernatural conspiracy on a global scale.
At one point the computer froze, so that made things a bit dicey as to whether there were going to be tech issues in this game. However I got back in and things proceeded properly after that. The game is about murders and the collection of evidence and figuring out where the evidence goes. I have never played a game like this before. I would have liked the skip button and the hint buttons to have been faster, because I wanted to get further into the game and when I am doing the demo, I often skip the puzzles after seeing how they work. The skip was so slow, I had to figure the puzzles out. Those are the things I like to do after I buy the game. I usually do not read much of the story stuff either for the same reason. There was a puzzle that had to do with matching molecules in the evidence and I was not sure how to do it but my partner with whom I always play demos seemed to have the idea and we got through that.
Now let me say that the HO scenes were very different using morphing objects for some of the things one had to find. This meant that one had to wait for something to morph into the thing on the list and click on it before it morphed back.
I would have liked the color pallet to have been brighter, but it was just acceptable enough that it is still a buy for me on that score.
There is a camera that one has to use to take photos for the evidence board. There is also a lab where the items are analyzed and then become available to the evidence board.
The diary has a record of what is collected and gives the tasks one has to do. There is also an analysis of the people one meets as far as how they figure into the story and the crime.
There is a map that I found difficult to read in terms of seeing the icons that tell where one is and things to do. There is a place where one can buy things that make the game go faster but I was not sure how I earned a point so that I could buy a hat. I did not want a hat and was hoping to find another point so I could buy the ability for hints to go faster, so I did not get to that part of playing the game during the time for the demo.
The things one had to do and the way things progressed were different enough that the play was a little slow, but I am intrigued by the originality of the method for actually sleuthing. I do not know if the game will achieve the use of the little grey cells that one has to use in a game like Clue; however, I am intrigued to see.
The glitch that shut the game down does worry me. There was also a few times when I clicked on something and it was the right thing, but it did not respond. That too sounds a little warning that this game might have some technical stuff still to work out.
As an SE game, however, it is very interesting even though the characters are a bit stiff. I will definitely be buying it and I think you might also find it worthy and interesting.
I think what most impressed me about this game was that the story was advanced by the various puzzles and things one had to do. While matching runes is not new, there were several tasks that were and also there were interactive aspects of the HO scenes as well that were surprising. There are magical things like a compass that one has to fulfill tasks in order to get the powder that gives it power. After one has completed a task one finds oneself in an area that can be skipped, but in this game that is a mistake as one misses several puzzles in that continuation of the plot. Most of the time, I skip those areas because they are simply talking that only ends with getting a prize that enables one to go on after all the talking is done. Not with this game...moving along one has to find things and match things so those cut scenes are not merely blather...but part of the adventure. There is a lot to do and I know that I missed some of the things one finds for achievements as well. I am definitely buying this game and know I will take more time with it than I do when I am running through to see how it plays during the trial. Although this is a mysterious landscape, it is well lit enough not to hurt my eyes and while some of the colors are strong, because it is well lit, that was still OK.
There are plenty of good HO and good puzzles and the only reason I am not buying it even at the sale price is that I just do not like game with ugly negative milieu so if you like horror and misery you will enjoy this game and I recommend it for folks with those tastes.
This would get a rave jump up and down I love it review if I could only see things clearly. My eyes are tired and strained from trying to deal with a game I REALLY love and will not buy unless they can add in the options the ability to make everything much brighter. I love the method of looking for the way the rooms where events happened got changed by the event. I loved the morphing objects. I loved the puzzles. I loved the deduction scenes. But all that love is frozen by the pain that my eyes feel. There were things to do that I could not even see were there in the darkness. What a sad frustration. Please devs, give us the option of making the scene bright throughout the game even if you think dark is mysterious, some of us do not want to go blind playing.
Move the screwdriver to unscrew each screw from the inventory. Repair the gondola and then get in it...no don't get in it, just magically appear there after being told to get in it. Find a mattress that one can not see. I play games to have fun and tease my brain, this is just annoying in the extreme. Try it and you will see what I am talking about. Just do not buy it without trying it and see if it is your cup of poison.
