Overall, a good game with several creative touches, good story, VO and artwork, but the mini games killed me. The games look deceptively easy, but take a long time to solve. Some seem impossible to solve--had to skip several and didn't feel like looking up answer on WT. Were it not for the mini games, would have liked the game much better. Makes for a long game given the challenge of the puzzles.
Some puzzles do not have a reset button??? They should all have them IMO.
Loved the artwork of this game and the many allusions to da Vinci and his genius. The story is reminiscent of that movie about Mozart ("Amadeus"). Game starts pretty easy and then becomes a bit more ambiguous and harder to deduce in 2nd half. Had to skip one mini game, because instructions were not clear. Other than that, this was a great game to play and a visual feast for the eyes. It's also a long game. Just about a perfect game, except for a few quibbles.
Wandering around in a cemetery is not my favorite thing, real life or virtually. The gloominess is mitigated by well drawn, attractive characters (ghosts). Art work is very good, but short of high def. Everything is gray or shades of brown. HOS are good and varied. Mini games have just right amount of challenge--easy to challenging without being frustrating. I found this game absorbing to play, but the ending is abrupt, and deliberate, it seems, to make you buy the CE, so for that I deduct one star. Despite dealing with ghosts, it's not too scary. I enjoyed playing this game. The 1-2 star ratings are not deserved.
You're lured to a family reunion and become trapped inside a mansion with 6 macabre family members dressed in Victorian garb and come across grotesque macabre debris throughout the house. Spooky elements are present, but they seem too contrived to be scary. Can't remember the rest of the story.
What I liked about the game is the artwork is HD and very well done. Would give it 5 stars, except the macabre theme is not my thing. The HOS are very good--a mix of finding morphing objects only, list of objects, interactions only, finding objects from solving a word riddle. The mini games are also very good--most are easy and include some shoot & point games, which I'm not very good at and often have to skip in order to progress, but these are actually not too hard.
The ending leaves you hanging in the air, as a set up for the bonus chapter I presume, but also not very satisfying,
However, it is a long game, so you definitely get your money's worth.
I would recommend Eipix update their cinematic intro to high res movie clip. It's low res and looks so dated.
I was pleasantly surprised by this game, but especially impressed by the quality of the artwork, voiceovers, animation, and long game play.
Love the artwork and sharp, clear, high definition images, bright, vivid colors of the interior scenes and imaginative mythical land traversed shortly into the game.
Most of the mini games are easy, except for the bubble shoot and pinball game, which forced me to skip.
I play with few hints, and was able to intuit most actions without help, which is always a plus IMO.
The story itself is a bit farfetched, but the imagery is what drew me into this imaginary mythical kingdom. I wish all devs would take lessons from this game to provide super high quality images for this type of game play. It's not very realistic when the images are low res.
I had a lot of fun with the game and enjoyed being immersed in the story. This game deserves a good look.
I forgot, The game features a super cute wood elf helper, who gets the heroine out of all sorts of jams.
It's not a perfect game, but comes pretty darn close.
Artwork is top notch, high definition, with lots of greenery and flowers to balance out a haunted English countryside. Most of the characters are well drawn except for the Inspector who makes a reprise from a previous installment.
Voice overs are good and matches the character.
The few gripes I have are the explanatory notes that occur as you progress are a bit fast--I must be a slow reader (from enjoying and lingering over the artwork) and would have preferred to control the appearance and disappearance of the narrative in between scenes.
Mini games are mostly easy, except the very last one, which ends the story.
The storyline is easy to follow and plausible (if you think along the lines of a vengeful ghost). I do think the husband accepts the psychic's explanation way too readily, and that was a bit far fetched and could have been drawn out a bit for dramatic effect, but would have made for a tad bit longer game. Finally, the ending is way too abrupt. It ends neatly, but way too neatly, as if the devs wanted to save any extra work for the CE bonus chapter.
Despite the flaws mentioned above, this is a fantastic game to meander through. I did not want the game to end, having enjoyed the scenery so much.
You have a helper in the form of a ghost easily bribed by a good drink, the alcoholic kind, and his help/hint is needed several times in the game, so be on the look-out for a bottle of whiskey, rum, and the like.
A thoroughly enjoyable game to play. Give it a try and see if you agree.
I recommend this game!

Shrouded Tales: The Spellbound Land
Your magical powers have finally awakened. Now you have the strength to free your mother from the Shadow Realm!
This is a game with many actions to progress and relatively fewer HOS. The crux of the game is casting spells that can mend broken objects, dispell black mists, make withered plants blossom again (elixir of growth), light a fire, remove illusions, and defeat the villain Vulture. These magic abilities are used when you encounter items as you progress, within a mini game, and even within an HOS. Most of the spells are easy to solve except the last two IMO. Most of the mini games are easy, except the last one IMO.
It is a fun game to play because most actions are easy to intuit. The other major crux of the game is acquiring crystals on a pedestal that once completed, allows you to travel back and forth among different realms. Some actions are required in the dark realm, and other actions are required in the Light realm, ie double the work.
The only thing I objected to is the artwork, which is nice in some areas and just so-so in most others. The artwork is also not high definition, so at least 1-star deduction. Has to have high definition artwork to make game tolerable IMO.
The storyline is OK, but forgettable.
Overall, a good game to play and a definite buy with a credit or as a deal of the day/week.
This game is many years old, but wears well because the graphics are high definition and therefore does not look dated. Despite being a ghost story, there are splashes of color and flowers throughout the game. The animation is good. Characters are well drawn, with plausible dialogue and good voiceovers. HOS are on the sparse side, and there are more items to find in order to progress through the story. The mini games are not too hard and there are quite a few match=3 style games to progress, which I find to be a nice break from brain teasers. The game is decently long, but flows really well, with most actions to take logical or easy to intuit. I loved this game and will look into other games in the series. The devs did a really good job with this game.
Overall, it's a good sleuthing HO game, but storyline is not plausible and descends into sci-fi nonsense.
It's a pretty long game. There are more mini games than HO scenes. Puzzles are not too hard, and experienced Fishies will find them easy. HOS are standard, but not spectacular.
The game starts out really well, but stagnates in the middle and end.
I wish the graphics had been high definition and more special effects in the animation.
It is not the best in the series, but a pretty decent game. I recommend trying the demo before purchasing. I liked the series when it had a CSI-like atmosphere and you felt like a real detective. This game seemed to lack that authenticity of a true detective drama.
I played this game not having played other games in the series. There are frequent allusions to characters that are not explained well in overall schema of this "Shadow World" but it should not interfere in playing the game.
The artwork is creative, but would be better if it had been high definition.
There is frequent use of a cheshire cat helper--when you hover over an item and it has a paw icon, that's a clue to have the cat retrieve item for you,
The mini games are quite good--easy to intuit, but may take some extra time to solve, but not impossible, and not too easy--just right amount of challenge to make it interesting.
You also have to find a crystal that hooks up to a magic crystal ball that can vanquish a Shadow World denizen permanently using Black Magic or temporarily disable them using Light Magic--you get a choice each time.
A very good game to play, with a lot to do and see, well worth acquiring for your library of HO games.
