What a tedious game! The graphics are ok, but nothing special and there's no sense of mystery or tension developed, as implied by the title of the game. It's basically roaming around, do a HOP, do a puzzle, and then a bit of mild cut 'n slash type gimmickry. You get all your 2017 glitz, but this game was just a waste of my time and money. SO BORING. Actually the HOPS of which there were a normal number, were the only redeeming factor, in that they looked good, but even then, there's no effort to hide the objects! Where's the fun in that? Where have all the quality games gone? There's just a ton of lack-lustre games being chugged out. Where has the variety gone? 2016 and 2017 have officially become the take-over years of the ultra colorful, ultra mundane game.
(WARNING: Straight off, I'll tell you (1) IF you need a MAP – there's NO MAP and (2), if you need the hint to tell you what to do next- you'll often get a "NOTHING TO DO HERE.")
Available at BFG since 2012. Review based on completed game. LOVED IT! Barren trees, howling winds, swirling leaves, cold puddles, ponds and lakes, dark skies, stone buildings, stone paths, a large moon giving everything a silvery glow and paths lit with lanterns giving off a golden, cozy glow.
GRAPHICS – "Widescreen" has a slightly stretched look, which is particularly exaggerated in the first scene (many of the subsequent scenes are much less stretched looking). The "Fullscreen" option is really more of a windowed. In windowed though, the graphics are pin-sharp. Also the graphics are what some call "old-school," but I don't mind them, since the story and the scenery are stellar.
MECHANICS: To place an item effectively: click on it from your inventory, when you have it in the correct position a wheel at the lower end of the cursor will spin. (No wheel spin means incorrect item).
HOPS: 30 Wordlists
PUZZLES: All skippable. LOTS of medium difficulty puzzles, with a few difficult ones thrown in. SOUNDS – 2, Music & Sound. Wonderful background sounds, especially of the weather, and luckily the music is on a separate control.
MAP: NO MAP. You will go back and forth between scenes a lot, and you will need to remember where to go, the hint won't help you or lead you anywhere, unless you are already at the correct scene. All scenes are accessible from start to finish. I did, need the walkthrough a couple of times. JOURNAL: YES DIFFICULTY SETTINGS – 3 –YES and interchangeable, if you need the "skip" to speed up on a puzzle.
HINT: Will often circle the specific area you need to look at, but won't give you the item from your inventory. Won't lead you from scene to scene. 40 seconds to recharge on Casual, about 90 seconds on Advanced, and no hint on Hard. INVENTORY – NOT Lockable CHARACTERS: Minimal interaction. No lip sync.
Available at BFG since 2017. Review based on completed game and bonus. I really liked this game! A lot of thought must have been taken to ensure the excellent pacing of this game. Each step you take leads you deeper into the unfolding of this story. From an evening city skyline, next to choppy waters, to an island mansion, with woods, caves, and rivers, you'll get a good dose of varied places, and the outdoors. The quality of the scenes stays consistent through to the end and several of them are wonderful! The goodies just keep coming! Very relaxing and mysterious, not disturbing. GRAPHICS - Widescreen or Fullscreen. Great graphics.
HOPS: 10 in main game, 5 more in bonus game. You can toggle back and forth between HOPS and jigsaw puzzle elements at any moment.
PUZZLES: All skippable. I really enjoyed this mix of puzzles. SOUNDS - 4 adjustments: Music/Sound/Environment were all FANTASTIC!!! The music was left on in my game, for a lot of the time!
MAP: TRAVEL with useful indicators JOURNAL: None DIFFICULTY SETTINGS – 4–interchangeable. Not possible to disable black-bar tips.
HINT: Guides and leads. INVENTORY – Lockable CHARACTERS: You play as Emma Roberts, the effective and very capable detective. You have limited interaction with others. The characters are excellent, believable and NOT comical. I thought it was genius that the "baddie" creatures were made more benign rather than frightening.
COLLECTORS EDITION: I enjoyed the 33 collectable objects occurring randomly in the scenes. Some of them were morphing, but not all (?). Perhaps I just caught them at different stages of the morph! NO replayable HOPS or minigames, but all the usual, otherwise.
Available at BFG since 2013 Review based on completed game. Beautifully transformed real images, with a ghostly feel. A love story, and not disturbing; more of a spooky investigative experience. You'll find yourself outdoors, with rain and ominous skies, a seaside mansion with tons of rooms to explore, full of all its furniture, and the Batavia – the Captain's ship. (Warning - Be prepared to scan the scenes for required pirate coins. The coins are of all sizes, some are easily visible and others are not. Personally, I enjoyed the treasure hunt. You can use up a hint to find one.)
GRAPHICS - Widescreen or Fullscreen. Brightness can also be adjusted. Natural colors. HOPS: 15-18 HOPS Wordlists and at least 1 silhouette. BEAUTIFUL real images and items.
PUZZLES: All skippable SOUNDS - with 3 adjustments: Music/Ambience/Speech. Great sounds and music. A lot of weather sounds, like rain and the waves.
MAP: TRAVEL with invaluable markers, including where gold coins remain to be found. You are free to wander within the game to any scene once you have unlocked it. JOURNAL: YES DIFFICULTY SETTINGS – 2 – NOT interchangeable. In "Difficult", there are NO sparkles or glints. HINT: Mainly written hints. However you do get further guidance with specifics if you use the Hint again. You won't be told what item to use from the inventory. 30 seconds to recharge in Casual, 90 seconds in Difficult. INVENTORY – Lockable CHARACTERS: Captain William narrates notes that are found. You can speed up this portion of the dialogue (it's nice how they fade out!). The cutscenes are few, and only last seconds. Nice voices.
Available at BFG since 2017. Review based on completed game. Hills, mountains, red desert and plateaus of rock will greet you wherever you go. Roam the country-side, homesteads and Mayan temple-like structures. Great perspectives! Wonderful, spacious, detailed graphics. So much time and care has been taken over getting scenery, backgrounds, and story to look and feel right. But where are you? I see two moons/planets in the sky! Music enhances the effect of having large areas to roam around in. Non-stop sound effects, with depth to them.
Perhaps if you're looking for a modern setting, hi-tech, or fast-moving game with rapid action, it may not be your cup of tea.
STORY - Story unfolds throughout the game at intervals, so that you are constantly made aware of new information. Lots of notes to find. Relaxing and lots to see. At any point you can return to any scene in the game. There are chapters, but you aren't restricted to those areas only. You'll return to earlier scenes to complete them. Kept me on my toes.
GRAPHICS – Adjustable resolution to 1600 x 900. Widescreen/Fullscreen.
HOPS – 8
PUZZLES: All skippable. SOUNDS - with 4 adjustments. Pleasant, appropriate and atmospheric. Music is suitable and totally separate. Great atmospheric music: pipes, drums and synth, percussion sounds. Bird song everywhere.
MAP: TRAVEL with useful indicators JOURNAL: YES. Lots of notes to find to advance your knowledge of current and previous events! DIFFICULTY SETTINGS - 4 interchangeable HINT: Guides and leads INVENTORY - lockable CHARACTERS: Dignified and believable characters when you do meet, that need your help.
Your grandfather disappeared while searching for Inuits' legendary treasure. Travel to the Arctic to find your missing grandfather and solve the Inuit mystery.
Available at BFG since 2014…Review based on completed game. Truly gorgeous graphics to begin with, pin-sharp and detailed. It appears that some real scenes and real items are mixed in, creating a feast for the senses. Later on, about half way, the scenes get less detailed.
You're mainly on a stranded ship in icy territories where treasure-chasing maniacs have brought curses upon themselves and innocent others. Piles of snow, ice and howling winds are your backdrop.
GRAPHICS - Widescreen or Fullscreen. The first half at least is totally awesome because there are so many real items and realistic scenes used.
HOPS: 15 Wordlists. Pleasant, enjoyable to look at and play.
PUZZLES: All skippable. A fun mix – easy to medium. SOUNDS - with 3 adjustments: Music/Sound/Environment. Excellent quality sound.
MAP: TRAVEL –it's in the journal JOURNAL: YES DIFFICULTY SETTINGS – 3 –interchangeable. In "Difficult", the black-bar tips are disabled HINT: Guides and leads. 45 seconds to recharge on "Casual." INVENTORY – Lockable CHARACTERS: Minimal interaction. The characters are actual people. I don't think there were any voiceovers, because I can't remember any voices at all – you see them talking, but you read.
EXTRAS in this SE- some Beyond Objects (morphing objects) to find, and some trophies.
Available at BFG since 2011. Review based on completed game. WARNING – you probably need a high resolution to play this game successfully. I remember trying to play this game a couple of years ago on a different computer and getting a weird red glow everywhere at that time.
I thoroughly enjoyed this game! Very different to a regular HOPS game. Has a very mysterious atmosphere as you wander around various houses, some old, and a graveyard. Some of the items you need to hunt down are tiny, and so scanning the scene is imperative! Watch for the cursor to change. This game requires you to think about which items to combine.
Story : You will wonder what's going on in this game. It's like you're on a treasure hunt to find out. That's the fun!The game is chaptered, but the game is divided into 3 distinct parts, within which you can wander freely. Something sneaky is on your tracks...
GRAPHICS - Fullscreen or Widescreen. Not the high clarity of 2017 CG images, but that doesn't bother me. Story and atmosphere count for a lot. Static point and click screens. No 3D motion (yipee for me!)
HOPS: NONE
PUZZLES: All skippable. Plenty SOUNDS – Not many ambient sound. The voiceovers are good, but there's no lipsync. The music is beautiful and separate- what I listen to consisted of harp, piano, synth.
MAP: NONE JOURNAL: NONE. You get a TASKS list at the lower left corner. DIFFICULTY SETTINGS – 3 & interchangeable. Some options are customizable. HINT: Will tell you only where something needs to be done or not, but won't show you where to find anything. Even on Casual, the hint takes 45 seconds to recharge. INVENTORY – Visible at all times. CHARACTERS: Minimal interaction. You're mainly on your own, wandering around.
I recommend this game!

Deeply relaxing, excellent artwork and music - THANKS! Immerse yourself in nature and different seasons.
This game falls firming within the category of CHALLENGING, ADVENTURE game. YOU MUST SCAN ENTIRE SCENES with your cursor. This is NOT for beginners. You should expect some form of challenge if you play this. The puzzles aren't that difficult. IF this style of game is what you're looking for, you'll have tons of fun; if not, you won't. By the way, there are some HOPS in this too. The puzzles are easy to medium.
Although the format to use items from the inventory is click-and-drag, this is more than made up for by the BEAUTIFUL 1600 x 900 scenes. You'll explore a dark, wooded, foreboding forest, barren and dry (make sure you set computer brightness to max here!!), but will soon move onto lush woodland with pools and water, lush, delicate blooms and carpets of moss. Beautiful detail on 1600 x 900 resolution! Mountains, volcanic activity and battlefield with sunset behind the monastry follow (got stuck on this bit Ch 5!).
***"Black bar tips" though, cannot be disabled (occur as comments made by Nostradamus). ***Does not descend into horror.
When you've played umpteenth games, you start to crave not to be led, so you can go off exploring on your own! So I'm very grateful for a game like this one! (3D motion often makes me nauseous, and I can't play them for long), but this type I CAN!
GRAPHICS - Adjustable to 1600 x 900. Although the first chapter does start off dark,, the remaining chapters are NOT dark. I think if you are lucky enough to have any kind of gaming computer with extra brightness, you will be ok. HOPS: SKIPPABLE! Wordlist and silhouettes, occur as more than 1 wordlist at a time. First 4 chapters contained 9 HOPS. PUZZLES: All skippable. Occur pretty frequently. Are pretty easy, but enjoyable. SOUNDS – ONLY 1 adjustment for everything MAP: NO MAP, but game is separated by chapter. NAVIGATIONS (especially for Newbies to adventure):
**** Hover your mouse around the edges to see which direction you can move in, sometimes it's up, down or sideways. But the movement is smooth and static not as in a 3D game (3D games usually make me nauseous after a short while; I'm so glad there are games like this one!!!!).
**** Look for changes in your cursor to indicate somethings to be done!
****Double-click the speech to hasten it along.
DIFFICULTY SETTINGS – 3 AND INTERCHANGEABLE HINT: Guides and leads. On "Difficult" You'll get 4 chances to take you to where you want to go, before it recharges again. INVENTORY – NOT lockable. Double clicking on it is necessary to open up a further "plus-items" combiner (it'll make sense when you do it). CHARACTERS: Minimal interaction. NO VOICEOVER, NO LIP MOVEMENTS. You read. Nostradamus is your companion in that he will appear head and shoulders, in the lower left when you click on something to tell you what it is. Yeah, a bit excessive, but hey, no game is perfect. Double-clicking the speech will force the dialogue it to move on. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************** SPOILER ALERT for the ELUSIVE CONVEX MIRROR--see below**********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
ELUSIVE CONVEX MIRROR***********************************************If you have trouble finding the convex mirror. Hint- it is BEHIND the 2-drawer cabinet. You have to keep clicking, swing your mouse around, and the whole thing swings around.
( Note to the developers- Thanks for this wonderful game! Next time can we lure and remove any creatures instead of bludgeoning them? Well at least it was done comically and not in a realistic way, and only done on one occasion; at least up until Ch 5 anyway, at which point I got stuck! )
Available at BFG since 2013. Review based on completed game. Gently paced and set in the middle of the night. Nice atmospheric graphics. Game only gets better as the story progresses. Heavy on HOPS, but they are very pleasant, enjoyable and well done. If you're not into HOPS, then this won't be for you. The only thing I wasn't keen on, was people's head getting lopped off ! Although you don't directly see this, but you often see a before and after, and sometimes a mad dash is involved. It was a bit disturbing, but there's no blood or agony involved. Everything gets explained toward the end of the game. You can easily play this game over several sessions without losing the plot.
STORY - Not as straightforward as you initially think, there is more to the story than you think. Although there are 5 Chapters, they are divided up into 3 main area. The three areas are 3 distinct phases of the game and you can't wander freely back and forth.
GRAPHICS - Great, clear. Widescreen / Fullscreen
HOPS – 32-35 HOPS. Clear. Pictures of items, or word lists.
PUZZLES: All skippable. Mainly short and easy. Plenty. SOUNDS: – with only 2 adjustments. Music and cursor –effects. Sadly no ambient sounds like weather or water, however, luckily the music was gorgeous and haunting.
MAP: NONE! JOURNAL: Yes, notes etc DIFFICULTY SETTINGS – 2 -NOT interchangeable once you've begun. HINT: Guides and leads. 45 seconds to recharge in Casual, longer in Expert, roughly 90 seconds. In both levels, the hint WONT show you which item to use from your inventory, but it will just show you the place you need to use something. The hint will remain available without having to recharge, if you just use it to show you which room/area to go, and then just take an educated guess. INVENTORY – Remains visible at all times. CHARACTERS: Minimal interaction. The characters are mainly ghosts. You play as a male investigator, with a very nice voice.
Dark shadows are rising, the spirits are restless and Lord Strix is back! Travel to his hidden lair and defeat him once and for all—but hurry; he grows stronger by the minute!
Available at BFG since 2014. Review based on completed game. This is NOT for beginners. You should expect some form of challenge if you play this. The puzzles aren't that difficult, but you have to scan entire scenes. If that's what you're looking for, you'll have fun; if it's not, you won't.
This game isn't chaptered and there's no map. You can enjoy roaming the scenes. Mountains, caves, gardens, water in most scenes, a village and volcanic region.
STORY - It's you and a pixie. The pixie isn't cutesy or anything. You have to rid this world of some meddling black magician. You'll meet people on the way in a pleasant world to assist you now and again.
GRAPHICS - Fits widescreen well. Fullscreen is more of a windowed. I liked the graphics a lot and luckily can use the HD option. You have to actively select it from the options. If you don't have an HD computer, the graphics are less detailed.
HOPS - NONE
PUZZLES: All skippable. Medium-Easy level. SOUNDS - with 4 adjustments. Pleasant, appropriate and atmospheric. Music is suitable, totally separate, and GREAT! Infact I loved the music! I didn't listen to it non-stop though. At one point it was ethereal synthesizer, and at some other point symphonic orchestra; beautiful and relaxing.
MAP: NONE JOURNAL: YES, it stores codes etc for you DIFFICULTY SETTINGS – 3 Interchangeable from options under "gameplay" HINT: Guides and leads. On Difficult, you still get hints, they just take longer to recharge. The great thing is, that with these hints, if you need to, you can use them to get an idea of where you are meant to be, and as long as you don't use it all the way to the final point of discovering what you're meant to do, you can take an educated guess, and your hint is STILL available. INVENTORY – remains visible at all times. CHARACTERS: I liked both the young lady you play as, and the pixie, who doesn't act like a clown (thank goodness). All the character voices were pleasant to listen to. I can't really recall any lip-sync; it wasn't that important to me.
