There are already over a hundred reviews for this so I'm not going to rehash. I just wanted to add my two cents...
No spoiler but... the way the demo ended had my daughter and me screaming! LOL. I bought it right then and there! This game is awesome on almost every level.
I'm one of those story line people and there are a few holes in the plot that stick out but they're easily overlooked.
Voiceovers and cut scenes are GREAT. Imagine being menaced by a sinister dragon all up in your face and fighting off flaming banshees with your bow and arrow! Graphics, music, artwork, scenery, everything... Tops.
I recommend this game!

I've only played one other Grim Tales (The Vengeance) and I liked it; but this one is terrible. The artwork is all jumbled up and fuzzy. Unclear. Harsh and confusing to the eye. The story line is also muddied and confused. It's as if the game itself is reflecting the mental state of the unstable bad guy. There is no background music just these shushing sounds and the occasional sound from interacting with the scenes. Add the silence to the convoluted screen with crazy color clashes and this game was trying to put me to bed early.
Voice-overs were ok, puzzles were ok. Nothing spectacular. Not anywhere near enough to compensate for the poor quality of the rest of the game.
I played the whole demo trying to give it a shot but I had to force myself to complete it - then I deleted it right away.
I don't recommend this game.

BASED ON COMPLETED GAME
The first almost-two-thirds of this game were great. I played it with my tween daughter and we liked it. Had I not finished the game I would have been one of those reviewers raving about how cute and ingenious the story is. But I did finish it, and at a certain point the game just went totally to left field.
It honestly felt as if there were two separate developers working on this game. The first part of the game that was awesome and engaging and the second half (actually a little further in than half) which just draaaaaaaged. It actually got boring at the point where you'd expect the action to pick up.
Also, I'm a big stickler on storyline - development/plot. Well, at the same pivotal point in the story where the action should have picked up but didn't, the story went from a really cute ingenious fantasy to ... huh WTH? The build-up of the story led you to anticipate in one direction then veered off into total improbability. Suspend disbelief? Uh, not that much.
In addition, the ending was very abrupt and left HUGE unanswered questions. I guess you had to get the CE for the answers.
I'm so vastly disappointed by what I thought was a great game in the beginning, only to have it taper off into a major dud, that I cannot recommend this game.
I don't recommend this game.

This game was all around EXCELLENT! Music, voice-overs, cut-scenes, story line, originality, quality and inventiveness of the puzzles and HOS - just PERFECT.
If you don't like jazz then try a different game. But if you do like jazz, Big Band, or Swing music then this is a must for you. The story is written around a murder mystery/save your Dad theme of jazz musicians and New Orleans mysticism so the music is an intrinsic part of the game.
BRAVO developers.
My only regret is not purchasing this as a CE because I want more!
I recommend this game!

When looking at the reviews I should have started with "lowest rating first" then I would've gotten a real idea of my experience with this game.
Add all of the 1 star reviews together and that's my opinion of this game. Really. They've covered it all.
Its only saving grace IMO is that I like the puzzles. Otherwise, Thumbelina's saccharine was enough to send me to the dentist... and I only bought it because I wanted to know if I was right about there being two princes. Well, I won't tell you just in case you do decide to buy but I will say that the issue isn't really resolved in the SE. If you want to know what's going on you have to get the CE for the bonus game wherein the Raven Queen is the main character. Ironically enough she's much more interesting and entertaining than Thumbelina. She says things like "Again, I have to find some peasant tool to do this" and "No way am I crawling in there like an animal" and sends in her minions. Funny, but not enough to redeem the game.
You might like it if you're 8. Otherwise, take a pass.
I don't recommend this game.

BASED ON COMPLETED GAME
I loved it. The only regret I have is that I wish I'd bought the CE.
I'm all about the story and in this one the story was very interesting. It hooked me 10 minutes into the demo. I bought it right away and played the whole game through! It's set in New York in the 1950s and mixes mafia gangsters and spiritual intrigue - that was a different angle! There were just a few oddities that probably wouldn't register if the developers aren't American. i.e. There was a female night desk clerk/security person in one of the scenes - no way in the 50s - and some of the characters (including the main character and the night desk clerk) were dressed in modern day clothing instead of 50s era clothing. There was also a scene where there was a reference to JFK who wouldn't become president until the 1960s not the 50s. But those are minor issues that you can overlook because they don't take away from the gaming experience itself.
The puzzles were challenging yet not frustratingly difficult. Some new twists on old favorites made them a delight to complete. The HOS were exceptionally well done. I'm not a fan of HOS at all, they annoy me, so I prefer FROGs and any variation that strays from the junkpile. The HOS in this game were completely interactive - no lists, no piles. Each piece found had to be used to do something else to lead you to the object of the HOS which made it a continuation of the adventure. Well done. I actually enjoyed them.
The cut scenes and voice overs were well done with realistic voices and acting. The graphics were nicely rendered, a bit grainy but nicely done. I think that was supposed to add to the 50s feel. All together a great gaming experience.
I hope they make a series of this game as I enjoyed it so much. This is now my current favorite!
I recommend this game!

I bought this game ages ago after playing the demo and thought it would be really cool. It was forgotten for a while and sat in my Game Manager until I decided to play it this week since I'm on vacation. I started over from the beginning and up to the 1 hour demo it was pretty interesting. But afterwards it just fell apart.
It started to drag and actually got boring. I had to force myself to finish it because I paid good money for it. The storyline was terrible with so many holes and illogical choices in the plot that it was ridiculous. Suspending disbelief did not go that far. Also, this cutesy factor pops up in the middle of the game out of left field and it made NO SENSE at all. The story isn't resolved and leaves the player with a lot of unanswered questions, probably because they want you to get the CE for the answers. IMO it's just not worth it. After all the rave reviews, and the admittedly cool first hour, I expected a lot more out of this game but didn't get it.
This game's been out for a while now, but it was so terrible that I had to leave a review.
I don't recommend this game.

This is an excellent game! The Dark Parables Series is my absolute favorite, and I haven't been this happy with a DP episode since The Snow Queen. Dynamite. I've already played it twice!
So, of course, BASED ON COMPLETED GAME
Graphics, Artwork, Environment, Mood ... all excellent. Highly detailed deep and beautiful imagery. I love the whole Eastern European overly baroque theme that runs through the DP games. The FROGs were awesome as usual. They were really fast to get through (HO scenes aren't my fav) and the objects are always beautiful. Who puts jewels on a hammer? Lol.
Sound, Cut Scenes, Voiceovers ... also excellent. The mood was set by wonderful musical scores; the choral music is always effective and it wouldn't be a DP game without the bird cawing in the background of quiet scenes. The voice over acting is decent and actually believable. The least effective voice was Belladonna's but she was supposed to be young. The cut scenes were great with sword-fighting action a la Red Riding Hood Sisters, but I like Ross Red better - only Blue Tea could make a red-headed male cartoon character sexy. Lol!
Story: For me, it's all about the plot of the story. I love a good story, and I truly love a good series that builds upon a story and stays true. The plot of TBOR is tight. It makes reference to all of the DPs all the way back to Briar Rose, building on the tales of each one and adding more detail as the story unfolds so that it fills in holes and makes sense of how they're all interconnected. TBOR answers a lot of the questions that were left from The Exiled Prince and The Snow Queen. Some characters that we haven't seen in a while are reintroduced and the bonus chapter opens up the door to the possibility of a whole new series. All-in-all well done!
Gameplay: It's a DP. If you've played them before then you know what to expect. It's not too hard, but not too easy either. Puzzles are fun. A couple that repeat, but it's ok. You have to listen closely to the advice given the detective throughout the game. You'll have to make a choice at some point and what you choose determines how the game ends for the characters.
Bravo Blue Tea! I wasn't at all happy with The Final Cinderella but this one made up for it in spades.
I recommend this game!

This is just an OK game. The gaming experience is different and the story catches you at first - which is why I bought it. BUT it's very simplistic, the hand-holding is ridiculous, and there are holes in the storyline so big that you could drive a truck through them.
The image quality, cut scenes, and voice-overs are great but some of the scenes in the second half are on the dark side. If you don't mind demon statues and such all over the place then you're good but that's not my cuppa tea.
I bought it as a catch of the week for 2.99 because the trial stopped right in the middle of a puzzle (I hate that!) and I'm not upset about the purchase. If I'd paid full price or used a game credit on this then I'd be upset. It was fairly engaging on a boring evening and worth 2.99. But there are so many great games on Big Fish that I wouldn't really recommend this one.
I don't recommend this game.

BASED ON COMPLETED GAME
I bought this a while ago and it sat in my game manager until I had time/inclination to play it. When I finally did play it I had to ask myself why I bought it in the first place because I didn't like it at all. Maybe it's because gaming has evolved somewhat since it came out, but this game really bored me.
Firstly, I'm a stickler for a good plot. In this one the story was just so-so and didn't come to a full conclusion in the SE. There were a lot of loose ends. Perhaps in the CE you'd get WHY the bad guy wanted to run "the perfect show" and HOW the perfect show was supposed to make everything better for him and WHAT the mysterious stranger hoped to accomplish. But those ends, and others, were left dangling in this SE.
Also, the action and pacing of the story seemed to go very slowly throughout 3/4 of the game. It didn't get even a little bit exciting until the last quarter. I was honestly rolling my eyes and forcing myself to finish. The artwork was rather grainy and the cut scenes didn't run smoothly - very jumpy.
Most annoying to me is the fact that there were just too many HOS! In every scene! ... and they weren't interactive or FUN HOSs such as we've seen in games like Emberwing. No, these were straight lists and a jumbled up junk pile. BORING.
Overall this game was a letdown - mediocre plot and poor pacing. I LOVED Rite of Passage: Child of the Forest and bought this one because it's in the same series but in no way is it in the same class.
I don't recommend this game.
