Mingames in HOS... That's one of the clever twists in this game. You have to hunt 12 similar elements, You find 9 and the rest you have to find by playing mingames (I loved the runes). That's how clever it is.
It is beautiful to look at. The storyline is straighforward, and we finally meet the villain.
All of Wonderland citizens and events are there, and what a goofy looking bunch. The mingames are all related to the story (making the lobsters jump inot the sea is a riot).
The challenge is not that great. But you are having such a good time that you do not care. You just want to see more of Wonderland.
There is little problem with backtracking since the designed the areasa as spokes of a wheel, and you do not revist much until at the end. And then you are thrust where there is no map... but then only two areas to cover..
I love Artist Colony. Well, they have taken it, and made it better. You have to be on your toes all the time. Yes, things take time to build, but in the meatine you have plenty to do. You have to find hidden objects, you have to check on your workers regularly, first to make srue that they are fed and in good mood so taht they do not leave, and later, to be on the lookout fo a cough that tells you to take the worker to the infirmary. Failure to do that makes you lose the worker. Also you have to fight off invasions of moles and carterpillars (the moles look goofy...) Plus a mystery to solve.
This in not a game where you can step out for a few moments and then come back. I did so and lost an experienced builder. On the other hand, when you get off the game, the action stops, so, it you take longer to come back you do not find everybody gone. They are just as you left them.
Also no tme limit. Take your time. And have a lot of fun.
I am not usually a fan of HOGs. But this one is done right. You not only find things, but by removing the extra objects you get to make the room pristine again, so taht it can be rented. It is fun to see a beautiful room emerge from the original chaos. You enter the room three times, one to put back stuff that you found in other rooms (and figure out where), other to remove all the stuff that does not belong, and the last to remove several objects of a kind that a collector wants. Only after the last one is removed is the room pristine again. You might want to linger on it before removing the last object.
Some objects you cannot find easily, and need a hint. This is easier because you can pick up extra hints (in the form of a magnifyling glass). There are also extra helps, a bomb that will show you the objects against a white background so that you will know where to look, a magnet that will make the objects vibrate when you get close, and the cat...
The cat is a gorgeous pure white that looks and is adorable. It sleeps until yu click on it. Then it stretcfhes, and looking gorgeous, make any hidden objects vibrate. Such a sweet and helpful cat.
The storyline continues in more convolute fashion this time. The look is gorgeous, which makes the HOS pleasant indeed (there is even a wonderful variation in whish you have to open cabinet doors one by one to find what you need). The minipuzzles are mostly fun, except for the particular ones that yu are not that good at (we all have these), but that's what the SKIP button is for. In each section you have to navigate betewen five or six rooms going back and forth until you are done. Then to the next section. Some puzzles are quite new (at least to me), and you meet colorful characters along the way.
This is a HOS/adventure game, but it feels like more. Maybe it is the pressence of SG and how he is always out of reach, and changes things, so that instead of being a game with story attached, the story drives the game, and you are itching to know what's next.
An unpredictable story makes for a much more fun game. The minigames are OK, though some are quite innovative. The HOS are ok too. Some interactivity to keep it interesting.\
I love this type of game. Similar to TM, but with no time pressure. Yes, there is a timed section, where you have to seat people when they show up, but the problem is not your speed, but whether there is a table.
You can buy tables, of course, but you need money, and not only that, tehre is no point in seating them if they are going to walk out before eating.
The beginnings are always hairy. You only have one cook, who knows only one recipe, and not too well. One waiter, who is not the best, slow cooking equipment, and sometimes some equipment is missing. You have to earn the money to rectify all this, to let your cook learn new recipes, to train him or the waiters so get new cooks, to get faster kitchen equipment, to get more tables.
Well, no matter how you spend your money, the first days will be disastrous, you will lose more customers than you keep, half of what the customers want you do not have, the cooking is slow, the customers are impatient and more than wllling to walk out. You can hire more cooks, but they still have slow equipment, and the more people you hre, the more salaries you have to pay. You have to strategize then, Do you seat large parties, which birng you more money, or small ones that get served faster, and thus do not walk out? when seating, pick the people at the back of thequeue, because they are not getting impatinet yet. Sitting someone already losing patience might meant their walking out angrily.
At some time you might run out of money. This is when your kidnly aunt gives you $500.00 to keep on going. Spend it wisely.
Then you finally learn the final recipe. You can give custmers what they want, and you can use the money to improve the speed, by hiring more cooks, or getting faster equipment. Still, you will lose customers Start planning for decoration, and for training your staff. If you add tables, add waiters too.
And before you know it, after sveral disappointing days, you start acheiving stars.
Decorating is a lot of fun. There are some things that you need to get, and be careful with floor decorations (and tables). You may put them in the way, and wll have to be moved so that people can go through. I confess that I made a mess out of the decoration. I gave a chinese restaurant a Mexican floor, for example. But still, it is very pretty (this develper has good aesthetic sense).
And then you get to have a Perfect Day, wehre everything works just fine... It is a great game, with a lot of fun.
Maybe I am spoiled by other nonogram puzzles, but I found two irritating factors.
One, that you have to fill not only the full cells, but also erase the empty ones, that make you go back and forth between pointers, just to get basic information on what you are doing, and the more you switch, the greater the possibility that you will misclick, and use the wrong pointer, thus creating an error.
The other is that you cannot tell what row or column you are. This, when you get to the more complicated puzzles, with 20 rows and columns,s the chance of making errors because you are in the wrong row or column goes up.
I enjoy complicated puzzles, and acknowledge errors when they are due to my faulty reasoning But to have a gameplay that encourages mechanical errors is a bit irritating.
Another quibble. To get out of course, yu have to click on "menu" and then answer that yes, you want to get out. So next you are back in the same background, and with no idea of how to get back to the menu. Then you notice the "x" on top. And when you click on it you go back to the previous background, with the "x" on top, which you have to click to get back to the menu. Another example of pointless annoying the user.
Still, the puzzles are interesting, and go from basic to real tough. And if you love this puzzles, you will put up with the irritation.
This is a nice relaxing game, very pretty to look at. The puzzles are challenging, but not to the point of being irritating, the narrative flow is well paced. There is no backtracking unless it is the "daytime/nightime" variety. A very plesant way to spend a lazy afternoon.
