Three modes of play to choose from, I played adventure and still had sparkles, hints did take a while to reload, but by the time it did I had figured out what needed to be done. There is a journal, no map and yes you can get lost (I took a break overnight and started up the next day…I lost where I was supposed to go or what I was to do).
HO scenes were clear, crowed but not cluttered, easily payable and never had to hit the hint button. I never had a click penalty until bonus round…I started clicking too fast; this tells me if you click slower you will get no penalty..so don’t be speedy.
Music was appropriate, and very good, graphics exceptional, story fascinating. So why did this not hold my attention? The game play gets good; the story pulls you in then a HO scene. The game play gets interrupted too often with ample HO scenes. I found myself checking out other games and trying demos…this game started to bore me. . Every 4-5 scenes there is an HO.
It was a good game, and I did somewhat enjoy it in the beginning. I was surprised it ended so quickly. I was grateful it was a CE so I could play more. While the ending would have been fine for a SE, the length of play would have been disappointing. So, the CE gives you a little more play time…but it still felt short to me.
Since there was nothing devastatingly disappointing I will recommend it, but………..
I recommend this game!

Many HO gamers may not see it that way, but in reality it IS a HOG. You must find items to progress in the game. Different from your traditional HO where you get one screen shot and have a list of items to find…this makes you use your noggin and actually think/search where to find items.
The graphics are simplistic, yet fun and pleasant. The music I just loved, soooo relaxing, even when I started to get a little stressed out from the puzzles, it was fun listening to the music. There are puzzles galore, many your basic standards, pipes, rotating planet maps, jigsaw puzzles, photo puzzles, not difficult.
You have a hint button that fills up by clicking on the colorful blue bugs (nits, dragonflies?). When you have filled up the button a red bug appears, click and he circles something on the screen. If he does not, you haven’t filled up the button, or if he is not there and the button is full, it means there is nothing in that area to do.
You have 4-5 chapters (I lost count). After each chapter you have a jigsaw puzzle of a planet that you have to add pieces to…each chapter you do a little more until the end of the game where you complete the world. At the end of the game you have access to all the puzzles you played in the game to play as you wish.
Many people get very frustrated with these types of games (similar to adventure games). If you are unable to progress in the game it usually means you have not finished a project. Example, at one point you are to collect 3 apples and turn them in for a coin. I collected all 3 and the coin was presented to me, however when I clicked on it it would not be given to me. At first I was very frustrated thinking it was a glitch, it was not. I had to go and play a rotating global map puzzle first, after that I was able to get the coin and continue. Many times in these types of games people cry “glitch”, when in reality the player has not collected what is needed, or performed a task before the game will let them continue. There is a walkthrough on the internet (not on BFG) I highly recommend you save the link in favorites or copy and paste.
I recommend you at least try the demo. However be warned, it will take a while to get the hang of it and at first it is a little frustrating, compared to the standard HOG this one makes you walk and really search 3-4 different screens to find your items (usually collecting x amount of balls, x amount of puzzle pieces, x amount of pipes..etc.). Once you get the hang of what is expected it really is fun…also have that walkthrough open so when you hit your Windows button you get a little assistance.
I recommend this game!

Picked this game up as a $2.99 special. At first I dismissed it as it looked like another crazy mental hospital, filled with disgust and gore (just finished Return to Ravenhearst). But surprisingly it was nothing like that. It takes place in a rundown abandoned asylum, and it looks just like one would, but nothing like Ravenhearst.
There are your usual HO and puzzles. HO not seriously junked, but some items very well hidden. There is a click penalty, which was extremely annoying. Puzzles were unique, not difficult at all. You are to collect cassette tapes to hear recordings that give background information. Collect all 15 and you get a bonus tape featuring Count Vladd (love that creepy voice….could also play Dracula!) Length of play, approximately 6 hours. I do take my time and savor everything…why rush, enjoy!
I was surprised I liked this game. It has the best voice overs I have ever heard in a pc game, seriously! These must be professional actors. First the main character Christine, she has a hint of an English accent, sweet, beautiful and a pleasure to listen to. The villain Vincent…ugh….spooky/creepy…and very good. Lastly, Count Vladd…honestly, he sounds like he just came out of a WWII film.
I understand there are at least 2 more in this series, Nightfall Mysteries: Curse of the Opera and Nightfall Mysteries Black Heart. Neither of which interested me when I first saw them, however, after this game I will be immediately going to purchase. The storyline continues…and you WILL want to know what happens next in “Opera”. I can’t wait, they hooked me.
As I said, I dismissed this game until I saw it on sale. I picked it up and it is nothing like I thought it would be….it is actually rather good, with a story that engages you and characters that you immediately care about. Since I did not try the demo, I am not sure how far you will get before it draws you in. I hope you give it a try, I don’t think it will disappoint (or offend).
I recommend this game!

Pure adventure. No HOS, no map, no hints just you! There is considerable text with voice overs, voice acting is well done. There is a sequel; Mystery Chronicles: Tree of Life which is quite good. They are not dependent upon playing in order, both stand on their own.
Length of Play, maybe 8 hours, give or take. There is a strategy guide provided by BFG (go to Blog, walkthroughs..or the forum may have a link). Graphics for background is very realistic, characters are stiff and not the best, they could have been better.
While it is a game that does not hold your hand and makes you think, it is also very intuitive and flows well. I only had to use the walkthrough once; in the beginning (while I knew what I had to do it just would not work. Found out I was just not putting the key in the exact place). It would be a good entry level game into this genre if you’ve never played this type of game before. Just released on BFG yesterday was Dark Alleys: Penumbra Motel CE., which play wise, is very similar, but more modern with live actors.
Entertaining and with historical information, it gets the brain cells working. You will get a feeling of accomplishment by achieving all your tasks by yourself without any sparkles!
I recommend this game!

In addition to your standard wallpaper and music you are given 32 hidden object scenes and 44 puzzles. BONUS!! Instead of concept art your given video and music. The art work is very well done. HO scenes are clear, defined and actually a pleasure to do (and I’m not the least bet fond of HO!!). I tend to click in a slow steady rhythm and did not get penalized. Perhaps if you click faster it will penalize you. Puzzles vary from easy to test your patience.
Two modes of play, easy and hard. There are no sparkles in hard and hints take much longer to recharge. While the characters are one dimensional the voice overs are EXCELLENT. Dracula sounds just like you would think he should, and the art of Van Helsing looks just like an actor I’ve seen on TV (dang, I can’t remember his name). Igor, well……given he is Igor, is what you would expect. There is also humor. Who would expect Dracula and Van Helsing to team together and fight evil. Van Helsing and Igor banter back and forth and it is quite comical. You will get many chuckles.
The one dimensional factor is overlooked and forgiven because the game play is so fun. Locations are marked completed when done; there is a map that will teleport you to an area of your choice. There is a journal; it gives you history on each knight whose powers you try to obtain. There is an achievement wall, always fun to see what you get.
Long playing game. There is a timer that lets you know how long you’ve played. I went 8 hrs. and 57 minutes! Granted, I am determined to finish my puzzles and therefore do take longer. I also want to enjoy my games and take my time. What’s the rush, it’s not a race, you’re paying for a game…enjoy it!
I recommend this game!

Very interesting storyline, yes that does matter to me. Veronica is a young girl who was given up for adoption; she is a decadent of two werewolves. Your mission is to help her adoptive mother find an elixir that her birth father was working on that will prevent her from becoming a werewolf. However, her birth mother actually wants her to go through the transition. A rather unique twist on the werewolf stories.
Very intuitive game play. Never used the strategy guide, rarely used the journal. There are puzzles, ranging from too easy to considerable gray matter exercise. There is a skip button for puzzles.
Graphics are very well done, voice overs are well acted (love the hotel clerk!). No Map, you do have a journal, it records numbers and sequences ingredients for recipes, I rarely looked at it. Music is appropriate, very climatic during exciting times. Some to and from, mostly not too much. Game play leans heavily toward HO more than adventure. Hidden Objects are pretty much a dumped mess. There didn’t seem to be a click penalty until the bonus game, and I clicked quick and furiously. Some of the items were on the small side and when clicked they would not always be accepted, you would have to click on them two, maybe three times before they would be crossed off your list. I played in expert mode, took about 3 hours without skipping any puzzles. There are 38 HO scenes in this game, bonus included. So, if the game takes you 3 hours to play, you have almost 12 HO within one hour, or one every 5 minutes!!! HO lovers enjoy!!
At the end when things really start happening and it gets exciting you have one HO every other scene REALLY. I’d like to request a skip button for HO….not all of us like them, if you let people skip puzzles because they don’t like them (and they still get the “prize”), they why not let the rest of us who don’t like HO have the option to skip. I mean, I’m getting excited gathering my materials and the music is building to a climax, I go to another scene and hello HO. I click furiously, get my item, move to the next scene do whatever, and go to the next scene hello HO. I'm really not crazy about HO, but I love to play all the other aspects of these games, PLEASE give me a skip button!!!!
I recommend this game!

This game has pretty much everything you could ask for, but there is something I can’t put my finger on that just doesn’t give it the WOW factor. You definitely get your monies worth regarding length of play, I like to take my time and enjoy my surroundings. I enjoy puzzles and this one has some interesting ones that I haven’t seen before, they range from “wow that was easy” to “urh”. But I try not to skip; I probably will stay on a puzzle longer than most. Length wise I would say about 6 hours.
Voice overs well done. Graphics clear and crisp. Music appropriate. The HO scenes are range from not too cluttered to “the closet opened and everything just fell out”. There is Object Placement…I rather like that better that HO. You are given an inventory of approximately 8 items and you place them in the appropriate place, sounds easy? Well, it does have some challenges! There is considerable back and forth, luckily you work in “chapters” so there are maybe 8-10 areas to work in. You do not advance to the next chapter until all tasks are completed.
The only issue I had with this game was the journal. It tells you exactly what you’ve just accomplished, or what just happened. That’s great when you need a break and come back to find your spot, but it offers no other information.
I tried the demo first and it caught my fancy. I purchased and was a little bored at first, but about an hour into it it starts to pick up. There is probably more HO in the first ¼ of the game. Then it leans more to adventure and investigation. A little bit of everything for everybody. I played advanced mode, no sparkles or hand holding. I’d say it was enjoyable, I found it to be relaxing with nothing gross or disgusting.
I recommend this game!

Bravo. Excellent game. Good graphics, excellent sound effects, music appropriate. No dark gloomy grave yards (although those are fun at times). Sceens are well lite and not depressing! The HOS are within an acceptable about (I don’t personally care too much for HO). HO are not junk pile, clear well defined, and well hidden at times. You do have sparkles, and the HO are interactive at times. There is a click penalty only if you go too fast, just keep a constant rhythm and you will be ok. There is only one play mode, no option of casual, adventure or hard core.
Not too much to & fro, you get a map and a journal that records necessary information to keep you on track. There is a robot that is your hint button and assists you in other ways (won’t spoil it), he has a quirky sense of humor and on occasion chimes in with an opinion or two.
Voice overs would have given this that extra touch that would have pushed it into the 6 star (?) category. This has a fresh feel to it. Developer Game Devo is located in Russia and this is their first game. Well done guys! Look forward to more of your games. Try the demo, I think you will like this one…it’s a nice change.
I recommend this game!

I thought I could handle it. Sound effects were very well done, very realistic and very creepy, chilling, depressing and yes scary. The hospital was probably the most nerve frazzling in regard to the sound effects. At first they didn’t bother me toooo much until I worked on a puzzle, it was quite difficult and it took me awhile. That’s when the sound effects really started to bother me (the moaning & screaming). I had to turn off the sound. Visually, don’t let any child see what’s on your screen….SERIOUSLY! Everything here is a mannequin, but it is still upsetting. There is child abuse, not that you see directly afflicted, but you hear a lot of verbal and see the remnants of emotional abuse.
Now to game play; I have played in expert, adventure, even hard core mode for years. I love adventure games; they never give you clues or tell you how to do a puzzle your left on your own to figure things out, but here, OMG forget it!! I honestly have never had so much trouble trying to figure out what to do next! There is a lot of to and fro. The sequence of tasks does not flow very well. You get an item in area F, go back to area A to use it, then go back to area F, and it just doesn’t relate to what you were doing in the first place. If you decide to try the game anyway after all the warnings get a walkthrough! I had the walkthrough open the whole time I played. Game play is not fluid you don’t do what you would expect to do when you expect to do it. Make sense? Well neither did the game play!
No map. Lots of back and forth. And take notes! You have a journal but it does not record any numbers that you see or are given and you will need them down the road. There are no HO scenes per se, there are “morphing” scenes (MOS). At first I thought that was refreshing, not so much later. You have to see something morph, or catch it out of the corner of your eye. I used the hint button often. In hard core mode the only time hints were available was in MOS. Again, get the walkthrough.
While this game may have gotten high reviews by some gamers, I will not be one of them. Yes you are given a disclaimer, but how seriously do we take that when it comes to a pc game? It’s like the disclaimer on a cup of hot coffee, “caution: contents MAY be hot”, of course we know hot coffee is hot. We have become desensitized to warnings because they are given for the most obvious things. HEED THESE WARNINGS!!!!
To BFG I say, what were you thinking? You could have done so much better, and you have. I hope they learned from the reviews. Yes, we like scary and spooky but this was just morbid and distasteful. I love to watch Sci-Fi, ghost movies and thrillers, I DO NOT enjoy slasher, violence against women and children types of movies. I just got done playing one of the most beautiful, relaxing and pleasurable games (Otherworld: Spring of Shadows CE), check out my review. It was jarring to me the difference in the subject matter…..what waaaassss I thinking!!!
I don't recommend this game.

This is a great game, everything you could ask for, beautiful graphics, great music, well done voice overs (sounds a lot like Kate Winset!), an interesting storyline and NO HOG! There are puzzles, and some are a little difficult. I decided to test myself and played in hardcore mode for the first time, surprisingly it was not too bad. I only had to reference the SG in the epilogue. Instead of HOG you need to find 5 of this 7 of that, 20 spiders in one scene etc. Much more to my liking that the laundry list of “hunting out garbage” (per my DH). :) There is a map, but only for a limited time in one area. There are achievements which are always fun..
Length of game play varies amongst players, I savor every minute, enjoying the graphics and music while investigating every nook and corner (there is one scene where the character says, “I like to snoop through other peoples things”…or something similar to that). Your time is shown at the end of the game, mine was 8 hours 23 minutes and that was without playing the bonus game. You definitely get your monies worth here!
Story is fantasy meets fairy tale. The “bad guy” is rather creepy, you also get your goblins, fairies, gnomes and a few other creatures. It is a story of good vs. evil, dark vs. light. Nothing that should offend personal beliefs or tastes. No blood or violence. No skulls or graveyards. There is a crowbar!
All in all this game has it all. Kudos to Boom Zap, the dev.’s, who are also the creators of the Awakening series…. one of my favorites although they definitely took a giant step forward with this game and IMHO created a genuine masterpiece.
Loved it and highly recommend it! Enjoy and savor every minute!
