Another game I have thoroughly enjoyed this month.
THE GAME: - Exciting murder mystery type game with lots of twists and turns - Enjoyed the game play and the 'whodunnit' style story. However, the ending was kind of abrupt and didn't really tie up the story very well; that was really my only complaint about it. - Graphics were good too. Cut scenes a tiny bit blurry and fuzzy, but you can put up with that.
HOS/PUZZLES: - HO scenes were great as they were not your average style. There were three different types of them alternating between the three. You had your normal HO scene where you find all the items. Then the second style is to find so many of a certain item, e.g. Find 10 flowers, or 12 cogs, something like that. Then the third type was you had the shape of each item on the screen and you had to find them in order, and then when you found that item, you had to use it to find the next item and so on until you get what you need. Brilliant! Wish more games had this alternating style of HO scenes. - Puzzles ranged between difficulty I thought. Some were very simple like guiding a puzzles piece through a maze, but then some you had to think about for a while. Some I'd seen before, some I hadn't.
WHAT DO YOU GET?: - Notebook (not overly helpful though I have to say) - No map - Coins to collect, which you could use to buy items at the local shop which you need to use during the game. (like extras like this!) - Hint button, skip button and puzzle instructions - Three modes of play; casual, advanced and expert.
LENGTH OF GAME: - Good length; main game took me about 3 hours and then the extra gameplay took about an hour.

Very good game; thoroughly enjoyed it.
THE GAME: - I enjoyed the storyline. Some weird sect kidnapped a woman and tried to extract 'a skill' from her. All a bit dramatic. - Graphics were better than some I've seen, not too cartoony. - Movement between locations could have been better. Some took a while to load which got a bit annoying. - Music was a bit tedious though as it was just the same tune played over and over. But thankfully the music wasn't played all the way through. It just popped up here and there, and during HO scenes.
HOS/PUZZLES: - HO scenes were very easy in my opinion. Often found all objects within a minute. But the interactive feature of them was good. Often you had to complete three actions before getting an object. This made up for the lack of difficulty. - Puzzles, for me, were great. Just the right level of difficulty that meant I had to think for a bit, but none of them had me tearing my hair out because they were too difficult. I had my pad and pen out trying to work stuff out, rather than clicking around hoping for the best, which so many puzzles have you doing these days!
WHAT DO YOU GET?: - Surprisingly, no notebook and no map! - Only help was the usual hint button, and skip button in puzzles. - One feature I found I liked was that the Inventory and Menu/Hint buttons were at the top of the screen, rather than at the bottom. At first, I thought it was going to get on my nerves, but after a short while, I found it better. It seemed out of the way, and you didn't run the risk of clicking Go Back while trying to view your Inventory. - Two modes of play; casual and expert.
LENGTH OF GAME: - Pretty good length; took me about three hours to complete. Should have got the CE though so there was more game play. I could have gone on longer.
THE GAME: - Very enjoyable mystery type game. The story was good with a nice happy ending. - Graphics are the best out of the three Dark Tales games; probably because this is the most recent of them. - Few things towards the end annoyed me a bit though...(1) for some reason, the game started telling what to do and what to use for certain situations. For example, if I examined a pot plant base, the character said "Ooh, a key. I'll need a magnet to get this" or when I was looking at a curtain, the character said "Hmm, this tassel will be good, I should cut this with my knife". I hate this! I like to play for myself and not have my hand held so much.....and (2) the game started to go very slow and took a good 10 seconds to move between scenes which is frustrating to say the least, especially when you're near the end and want to get finished.
HOS/PUZZLES: - HO scenes were ok, but quite easy. I found all objects fairly quickly with ease. The descriptions of items were random sometimes though and didn't match! For example, the clue was 'Bowl' and the actual item in the scene was a cup! This happened a few times. Quite irritating. - Puzzles were ok, again fairly easy. Nothing new....all puzzles I've seen before.
WHAT DO YOU GET? - Notebook - Hint and Skip buttons (no hint button in main game though, only in HO scenes.) - No map - No extras, collectables or achievements - Two modes of play; casual or expert. I played in expert.
LENGTH OF GAME: - Average. Took me two evenings to complete the game.
Despite there being a few frustrating and bad features, I did enjoy playing the game.
A new breed of virus has spread throughout the City of Oxford. You must search the city for a missing girl who holds the key to stopping the global epidemic!
Absolutely brilliant game! Wish we had one game like this coming out every week.
THE GAME: - The opening scene had me hooked. Very dramatic and quite sad as well. - Music was very well matched with the mood of the game. - Storyline was great; really emotional and exciting. Almost felt sad when playing. - Characters were live actors. Voiceovers were a bit weird; but ok. - There is soooo much to do! Every part of the game is interactive.
HOS/PUZZLES: - Best HO scenes I've seen ever! It was so interactive....for example, you had to find one object which was then used to find another object, and so on. Not just staring around the screen trying to find objects. Great! - Puzzles were a mixture of difficulty. Some were simple, i.e. just colouring in objects, or moving stuff around to find something. But others were really difficult and you had to think about it.
WHAT DO YOU GET?: - Notebook - Map (not interactive) - Coins to collect (which can then be used in the game to buy stuff) - BEST PART - you can customise your own difficulty level. Genius! Why don't more games do this! So you can have some things on hard, while other things can be on easy. You can also change this within the game if you're not happy with what you've set it to.
LENGTH OF GAME: - Length, for me, was slightly too short. I'm glad it was a CE game so you've got extra game play. It only took just under 3 hours to finish the main game, which in my opinion is quite a short game.
All in all, a superb game. Please can we have more like this!
THE GAME My favourite genre; spooky horror. The storyline was good and a bit scary in some places. Big Fish was wise to label this game as unsuitable for younger players. There were some really graphic scenes with blood everywhere and killings. The gameplay was good too; movement round the game was quick and smooth. Some scenes took a few minutes to load between clicking, but that didn't happen too often. Graphics and cut scenes were clear and well produced. The characters lips didn't move with the voiceover words, but that didn't bother me too much.
HOS/PUZZLES: The hidden object scenes were a little easy in my opinion and I often finished the scenes in under a minute. However, there were one or two scenes were I was stumped and couldn't find a particular object for ages! They were also proper HO scenes and not just junk piles which so many games have these days. Puzzles on the other hand were a bit more difficult. Some were simple, but others had me scratching my head a bit.
WHAT DO YOU GET? You've got your journal for notes and the hint/skip buttons, as well as instructions to puzzles. There's no map unfortunately which I tend to like in games and no extras to pick up like achievements, etc. There are three modes of play; casual, advanced and hard. I played in advanced which was easier than some advanced modes in games.
LENGTH OF GAME: For a CE, the length was ok, but not as long as some I've played. I'm glad I got the CE instead of the SE as it was not overly long, so it was good to have the extra gameplay with the CE.
THE GAME: Thoroughly enjoyed. Nice mystery type story, but the ending was pretty rubbish. Nothing really happened and there was no real closure to the game. However, I liked the gameplay aspect of what you had to do i.e. travel back in time to different 'memories' and obtain certain items to continue on. Graphics are also nice and clear, and the movement around the game is smooth and quick. HOS/PUZZLES: HO scenes were fairly easy and there was no real challenge. Plus it didn't contain the interactive objects which I tend to like. Puzzles were ok, also quite easy, but there were a few at least that had me scratching my head! WHAT DO YOU GET?: You've got your usual journal for notes and the hint button. There's no map unfortunately which I like in games. The puzzles have instructions (some games don't, which amazes me!) and a skip button which fills quite quickly. There's three modes of difficulty; casual, advanced and hardcore. I played on advanced which was quite easy, so probably best to play on hardcore. LENGTH OF GAME: Super long game! I was playing for at least 4 full evenings, possibly more.
Would definitely recommend this game; and I will now be playing the sequal; Legacy!
Another game which I've put in my top 5 favourites!
STORY LINE: A game with a proper storyline and something which combined a bit of being lost in a hospital, a bit of ghostly goings on and adventure. You have special 'runes' to collect and 'baddies' to get rid of throughout the game which I think adds some fun. Nice happy ending too.
GAMEPLAY/GRAPHICS: Gameplay was good. Quick movement between screens and when clicking on items, etc. Graphics I also liked. Not too cartoony and a mixture of light and dark scenes.
MUSIC/VOICEOVERS: Music I always have switched off, but the voiceovers were better than some I've heard. Not overly dramatic or forced. There's not much talking in the game anyway because it's just you alone in the hospital area.
HOS/PUZZLES: HO scenes I really liked in this game. Clear and items were well hidden, but not too hidden that you needed a hint at any time. They were also interactive so some items you had to complete an extra step to get them. Again, I like this added feature as HO scenes can get tedious in time. There's also not too many of them, and they're equally distributed throughout the game. Also another plus in my book! Puzzles however were fairly easy. I didn't use any hints or skips in puzzles and usually completed them quite quickly.
CHALLENGE: There are two modes of difficulty; casual and expert. I played on expert but to be honest, this was quite easy so I dread to think that casual would be like.
WHAT DO YOU GET?: You get your usual notebook and also have a map. The map was good as it let you know exactly where you were and also told you in which location an action was available in case you get stuck on where to go next. There are also beyond objects that you need to collect 42 of, and you get a little bonus at the end if you collect all of them. Then you also get your usual hint and skip buttons if needed.
LENGTH OF GAME: Very good length for a SE game. I finished in just short of 4 hours.
Not the best game in the world, but a good casual adventure; nothing too taxing.
STORYLINE: A ghost story; nothing original but enjoyable none the less.
GAMEPLAY/GRAPHICS: Gameplay was good, moving around was quick and non-glitchy. Graphics were ok, but I've seen better.
MUSIC/VOICEOVERS: Music wasn't good. Same tunes over and over so I turned it off after a while, but this also turned off the sound effects, so had to turn it back on. Also, the sound went a bit funny sometimes; going quiet after a few seconds and then disappearing altogether. Don't know if this is a problem with the game. Never experienced it before. Voiceovers were quite good for a change. Most games have really cheesy ones or none at all, but these sounded realistic and not overly dramatic.
HOS/PUZZLES: I liked the HO scenes. They were very clear and not just junk piles. The items were hidden well, but none were too difficult to find. There were also your interactive items where you have to complete an extra step to find them. Puzzles, however, were very very easy!
CHALLENGE: There are two modes of difficulty; relaxed and expert. I played on casual but I would probably recommend playing on expert as the casual mode was very easy.
WHAT DO YOU GET: You have a journal for all your notes, but there is no map. And there's the usual hint button. No extras to pick up or anything.
LENGTH OF GAME: Quite short in my opinion, only took me 2½ hours to complete the game. And the demo ended after just 40 minutes.
Overall, quite a good game, but nothing to rave about.
Excellent game; this is definitely my favourite to date.
STORYLINE: Story was good, a bit different from the common ghost/horror/scary type games. Easy to follow
GAMEPLAY/GRAPHICS: The graphics were very good and live actors were used for the characters. Gameplay was good too; there's lots to do and pick up. The game is also non-linear so you can complete your tasks when you want and go where you want rather than following a certain path.
MUSIC/VOICEOVERS: Music I cannot comment on as I always have this turned off. Voiceovers, however, were pretty bad. Really dramatic and didn't match the actor's appearance at all. The voice also didn't sync with the actors moving lips which was a bit distracting.
HOS/PUZZLES: HO scenes were good; some easier than others. There's not too many of them either which I liked. I often get bored of games with too many HO scenes. Puzzles were original and varied in difficulty.
CHALLENGE: There are two modes of difficulty. I usually play in casual mode and this was difficult enough.
WHAT DO YOU GET? You have the usual notebook and map. Map gives you help by letting you know where actions can be carried out. This is good incase you get stuck on where to go next. Puzzles come with instructions and skip buttons. You also have achievements and objectives which adds some more fun to the game. There are also 20 photos and 10 cards that are hidden around the game which you have to pick up.
LENGTH OF GAME: Very good length. I finished the main game in four hours and I've still got the bonus game to play.
