Almost too much to love about this game to list it all. Play is smooth, with a map that lets you move from room to room easily, and well-marked room entrances and exits. Puzzles are challenging without being frustrating. HO scenes not overabundant and items usually easy to spot. It was possible to play through the game based on common sense without having to resort to hints or walkthroughs.
Great for (older) kids, especially if they enjoy a touch of dramatized horror. The art was outstanding, and the voice actors did a great job bringing the story to life.
As a Holmes fan, I was glad to see this didn't follow the short story and was entirely new. That said, as a Holmes fan, the supernatural story elements were a little out of place, and occasionally some of Holmes' comments seemed out of character. But that's nitpicking, as the story was quite fun.
The story and characters for this one are great. I'd say more but don't want to spoil anything.
The second best thing about this was the ability to switch between Hidden Object and Match 3. The HO scenes were replayed, but being able to play differently kept the play fresh.
Movement was smooth - the controls never intruded on the game at all. I liked the sense of motion and perspective in some places. Puzzles were a bit on the easy side.
At its best, this was like being part of a detective story. The characters, especially Dupin, were charming. The chapters were distinct with very little overlap, which is great for those of us who don't always play through in one or two sittings.
The puzzles were on the simple side, but I didn't find them boring. Hidden Object scenes varied between fun and sadistic, with a great variation in the graphics quality as well. A few more HO scenes than my personal preference, but the player never has to play through the same HO scene twice.
Overall, a fun game, and one I'd recommend, especially to a new player.
More of a 3.5 star rating, if that was possible. The story was fairly good, though at the end I'm a little confused about a few things. May be somewhat insensitive to one particular culture/ethnicity. The content's more daytime spooky than primetime/evening horror.
Hidden Object scenes were okay. Some had to be replayed a couple of times, and they were a bit dark and grainy, Some running around, but not too much. Many little puzzles, each easy to solve in itself but difficult to remember where to go when the right object comes along - the Hints feature was helpful here. There was a lot of flashlight use.
I particularly enjoyed taking pictures of different scenes. The photos were nicely atmospheric. And I loved the teddy bear.
The military experiment setting is interesting. The scene cuts, etc. are well done. The story starts out somewhat promising, but the ending seems very rushed.
Did not at all care for having to revisit previous Hidden Object scenes at the end. The display was grainy and dark throughout, though it's possible my display's to blame for some of that. There were some HO scenes in which objects had to be replaced rather than found, which I like.
Game play was okay - nothing really new or innovative. The Hint feature wasn't very helpful. (You could pick one interact-able item in the room and a ghostly, grainy image of its solution would appear, even though that puzzle couldn't be solved until near the end of the game.) I did consult the walikthrough several times, when I'd missed a small onscreen object. Fair amount of running back and forth.
Overall, it's not that this is awful, but that there are better examples of its type out there.
Enter the world of Drawn. Explore the Painted Tower and unravel its mysteries on your quest to save the hope of the kingdom. Can you reach the top of the tower?
The artwork alone is enough reason to enjoy playing this game. The characters were beautiful and fantastical.
I played this with my ten year old daughter and she recommends it "to everybody in the universe".
The only thing that kept it from the full five stars was the difficulty finding and using the exits and the hint feature, which wasn't always very helpful.
Definitely not for anyone who isn't fond of very dark content. I wish there were more like this! Can't figure out how to say more without going into spoilers - but the plot did not disappoint.
There's a basic pattern through most of the gameplay. Minigames repeat - to me, they seemed to get harder as they went on, but then I might've just been staring at the screen for too long. Was not in love with the reverse-puzzle Hidden Object-ish scenes (although they were refreshingly different). However, I really enjoyed the many jigsaw-type puzzles - the art was fantastic, and the puzzles definitely made the most of it. The general pace was spot-on.
Hints are limited and can be increased by finding magnifying glasses in various scenes, which is a big plus. At the easier level, there is no penalty for multiple clicks on HO scenes, so hints are a last resort.
This is a difficult game to rate. Where it fails, it fails pretty badly. But the bottom line is that I had a blast playing it. It's whimsical and fun - more than once, I found myself grinning at the characters and at the tasks. I loved the quirky and very lovely artwork. Some things were wholly new - without giving anything away, the magician's hat is pure genius.
Therefore, four stars, even though the game has issues. I'd buy a sequel or similar game in a heartbeat.
Movement needs help. I accidentally went to the wrong place or backed out of a room by mistake more times than I can count, despite big yellow arrows meant to guide the player. A few of the tasks really needed to be just a little more intuitive.
Played through the demo in 45 minutes. Will not be purchasing, at least not as a CE.
Overall, this just didn't grab me. Play seemed more about solving a series of puzzles than about being actively involved in a story. A few too many Hidden Object scenes so far; although they're more fun than the usual, they get tiresome fairly quickly.
Lot of good options for different play styles. Great controls/moveability. Puzzles simple but not boring.
Might pick up the standard version when it's available.
The story was excellent, possibly the best I've played so far. There were a couple of scenes that were pleasantly dark, creepy and unexpected. I'd love to see even edgier content from this developer, as the atmosphere was fantastic.
The controls were smooth - almost unnoticeable, actually. Room exits were well marked. Game was nice and long. The voice actors were good, as were most of the sounds. (The bell got on my nerves, but then it was probably supposed to.)
Downsides: Having to replay the Hidden Object scenes multiple times. They were pretty easy, but the repetition didn't add to the fun of playing - it was a distraction.
There was just a little too much running around. Sometimes, it made sense and was fun, but other times it felt like I was just going where the map told me to for no particular reason.
Overall, a great game, and I'm looking forward to the sequel!
