Classic 'Jack and the Beanstalk' fairy tale...with a twist! Jack had three magic beans he wanted to get rid of, but he lost one. You are a recently graduated detective sent to destroy the beans. You manage to get rid of two with a little bit of magic, but the third (missing bean) sprouts and grows into an enormous beanstalk, grabbing Jack as it climbs upward. Your job is to rescue Jack and destroy the giant in the sky. But for that to happen you must travel through different kingdoms (I played flower kingdom and moon kingdom) and solve puzzles along the way.
3 levels: casual, advanced and custom. The custom allows you to change the times for hint sparkles, skips, and hints. Optional tutorial. Interactive Map, shows locations available, objectives and is transportable. 7 chapters plus a bonus chapter 40 eggs to collect, and an egg room to display them Beautiful artwork Lots of puzzles, many where you have to collect certain items before tackling, all quite easy List style HOS, some slightly interactive, but not junk filled and all items easy to find
I had two issues with this game. First of all it is an easy game, and might not be a good fit for hard core players. Secondly, some of the accents irritated me slightly. The British accent sounded fake (I am English) plus I thought Jack sounded like an adult, not a young boy. The other thing about the voices was the way the animation was handled. Really...it was just a chin-bobbing effect and looked rather comical. Having said that, I enjoyed the trial, regardless of the simplicity and chin-bobbing, and will definitely be taking advantage of today`s sale. As always, this is only my opinion, and I strongly urge you to try it for yourself.
The story begins with the tale of your grandmother, who was found, as a baby, with a strange mirror in her cradle. After she dies, you inherit the mirror and begin having strange dreams of a far off island. One day your friend Peter suggests a hot air air balloon ride and he insists you take Grandmother's mirror. The hot air balloon ride is actually supposed to be the balloon just going up in the air while tethered to a post. Predictably, the balloon becomes untethered and you fly over unfamiliar lands, managing to jump out of the balloon on the strange island of your dreams. Your friend is not so lucky, though I suspect there is more to this character than you have been led to believe.
2 levels; casual & expert. (I started playing on casual so I could play more of the game, however it was annoyingly simple so I switched to expert. Unfortunately, it didn't get noticeably harder) List style HOS. Puzzles, lots of them, quite easy No voiceover Music...slightly annoying, but not bad if you turn down the volume and just have it faintly in the background. Graphics are a disturbing blend of real scenery & people mixed with beautiful artwork. Optional tutorial Extras, unusual for a SE; 31 yellow bugs to collect, plus mini games are replayable in the main menu section once you solve them
I played the entire hour of the trial, so obviously I was enjoying it on some level. I really wish the developers had stuck to one style of graphics. And while I was pleased by the inclusion of extras not usually found in a SE, I wish more attention had been paid to having voices, not just the text. I love having voiceovers where the characters lips are in sync, but even an audio is better than nothing. I cannot, in good conscience, give this game a 4 star rating, however, I am going to recommend the game for beginners, or if you have a free coupon, as I do, using that. Light (and I stress light) entertainment for a boring afternoon..
I recommend this game!

The Torment of Mont Triste Collector's Edition
No one dares fall asleep in the village of Mont Triste... for when sleep arrives, so does the mysterious Lord of Nightmares.
The story opens with a man in a strange chair-like contraption having a 'Eureka!' moment. It is the moment he has been waiting for; linking the world of dreams with the real world. Unfortunately, something goes horribly wrong and he opens a portal, freeing the Lord of Nightmares instead. (who looks remarkably like Dracula). You play the part of a detective, asked by the townspeople to end their nightmares. You travel there by horse and coach, but as soon as you get there your coachman falls asleep and the Lord of Nightmares appears. And so the story begins.
3 levels I loved the music; dramatic at appropriate times, softer at others. Beautiful artwork List style HOS but they are clear and fairly easy; slightly interactive Notes you find give the backstory 21 collectables Bonus chapter Mouths do not move in voice overs Puzzles are pretty good, with a couple that were deceptively tricky
I found the concept of going into the nightmares to save the townspeople intriguing, and the demo hour passed too quickly so I will be adding this game to my collection. This review, however, is just my opinion, and as with all games, I recommend trying it for yourself
The fierce and powerful chaos god has managed to trap you in a magic sphere. Your mission is to free yourself and all the other trapped people, some of whom have been turned to plants, among other things.
What I like: - I like the FROG scenes. You collect pieces of several items and then use the item to either find something else or as part of something else. This is my favourite kind of HO - The story (so far) is interesting. - The music is soothing although a bit choppy at scene changes I can also see it becoming monotonous, however, I don't consider this a negative. It's why I have a volume knob on my sound system. -I found the graphics quite nice; again nothing to write home about.
What I didn't like - I didn't like that there was only one level of play - I didn't like having to read the dialogue and watch the changing screen at the same time. Good voice overs are always a plus. - I didn't like having to access the map through the journal, so I stopped using it. It is not interactive, but does offer such info as scene puzzles, HOS and close up puzzles. - I didn't like the list style HOS that popped. They were easy but not interactive. - Puzzles are not too hard, but they don't come with instructions. - The hint button will only tell you there is nothing further to do in a particular scene.
All in all I had more negatives than positives, but I am still enjoying the game, so I am neither going to recommend it... nor give it a 'thumbs down'. (plus I used a free coupon for it that was going to expire, so I am happy!)
Sunhook Spire is the 5th installment of the Awakening series. Although it follows the story of Princess Sophia's quest to wake her parents from their cursed sleep, it is, like the others, a stand alone game. In this installment, the dragon and the owl are back and are as lovable and helpful as ever.
5 chapters 3 levels of play; relaxed, normal and dreadmyre variety of HOS; some of them quite different, ie colour coded objects. beautiful music and artwork journal interactive map optional tutorial
I played the middle level of the CE and the trial of the SE just to see what the differences were (no morphing objects, bonus chapter, SG or wallpapers etc) Perhaps I should have played the hardest level because I found the game quite easy. I gave the game 5 stars, but 4.50 would be more acurate. I took points off because, even though I love these games, I am beginning to think the princess will never be reunited with her parents. I bought the CE without even trying it, because I have played all the other installments and I am always so enthralled with the gorgeous artwork and music, plus this genre of game is my favourite.
As with any game, if you haven't played any of the preceding games, please try the trial and decide for yourself.
The story, plants have taken over the world, is a welcome change from the dark and gloomy demon-resurrection tales which have become so popular. The opening scene shows a young girl on her way to school. As she walks down the driveway her favourite birthday gift, a teddy. becomes unfastened from her backpack and falls down a grate. The little girl reaches down, ("Come on teddy, take my hand") and pulls the bear up, but we are treated to a view underneath the grating where we see menacing vines reaching out to the little girl. One of the best openings I have seen in any game!
2 levels of play journal interactive, list style HOS interesting puzzles, especially the very first one! great graphics dramatic music compelling story
The only downside of this game (for me) was the style of HOS. I don't particularly enjoy the lists, preferring silhouettes, FROGS or replacing objects. Having said that, I think this game would appeal to anyone looking for something a little different, especially sci-fi fans!
As with any game you are thinking of purchasing, please play the demo first so you can make up your own mind.
I'd read so many great reviews about this game that I was excited to try it. Unlike all the other reviewers however, I did not like it at all! There were some positives...I liked the Guide, which is a talking book you befriend to help you rescue your girlfriend, Catalina, who has (surprise, surprise) been kidnapped. I also thought there were some pretty quirky characters and an underlying hint of humour throughout. For these reasons, I am giving the game 3 stars instead of a lower rating. But I also thought the game could have been much better. I didn't like the graphics or the accents, and I hated that the lips didn't move when the characters talked. I thought the HOS were too easy, but the puzzles weren't bad so that kind of evened it out. I would strongly suggest people try the demo before even using a coupon for this game. Everyone has different taste and obviously I am the minority here. I definitely won't even use a credit for this game, much less spend money on it.
I wasn't going to try this game, but did on a whim and am very happy I did. You are the newest inductee to the League of Light, and have been sent to investigate strange goings on at the Dark Lord's castle. When you arrive at the village, the village leader's daughter is snatched from her bed by an evil winged creature, and carried off to the to Dark Lord's castle. Your mission is to rescue the girl and solve the mystery of the lights. -3 levels of play -collectables -interactive HO but no lists as far as the demo would let me play. Instead, you must find silhouetted items and use them to find other objects. One of my favourite styles of HOS. -music and voices well done -beautiful artwork -storyline, not a new one, but extremely well done, and actually made me jump a few times, although I won't say where! -interactive map that shows objectives and will transport you. -puzzles were a little on the easy side, but I was playing the casual level because I wanted to get as far as I could into the game. My only negative would be that I played the entire demo in only half an hour, without using any hints, so this might be a short game. Because I had 2 credits, and this is a BOGO weekend, I bought the game, and another CE, and got it all for nothing. Did I mention I love Big Fish Games?
The story, as far as I could decipher from the gameplay, revolves around you ( a young woman) who is meeting a person named Zack at a farm. He, however, is not there, when, after enduring a spooky solo drive through the woods, you arrive at your destination, a farmhouse, only to find the gate boarded up.You have a very weak cell phone signal that cuts in and out, but manages to desplay a cryptic message from the unknown Zack that simply says HELP. Hence, the story begins.
Unfortunately, I could not bring myself to play the entire free trial, but what I did notice was there were no voices, just subtitles at the bottom of the screen, which is almost as bad as having voiceovers with bad accents.
There is an optional tutorial at the beginning of the game which I didn't use since the game is pretty straighforward.
Hint button fills quickly on casual mode.
There were 6 list style HOS during the first 15 minues of play, far too many for me, and no alternate game option ie match 3, mahjong etc. I know many players LOVE the HOS, personally I think they are repetitive unless extremely interactive, which these were not.
Apart from the negatives...the graphics are pretty standard, not stunning, not dreadful either, and if you love list style HOS this might be right up your alley. For me it is a pass, but, as with any game, try the trial for yourself.
Confront an ancient evil and uncover your true! After a startling revelation changes your world forever, you must embark on an epic journey to save mankind.
Based on trial You are the girl of an ancient legend, and it is up to you to collect five parts of an artifact. Right at the beginning you are informed you are adopted and you are told to bolt the door to your room. Even though you do this...a man (grandfather I think) manages to throw the door open, and then, right before your eyes, he is murdered by, I believe, his brother. And so the adventure (and I use the term loosely) begins.
Two levels to choose from; casual and expert Optional tutorial Nice voice overs but the characters lips don't move, which personally annoys me HOS are crowded and only have one or two items that are slightly interactive From an artist's point of view, the actual artwork is lovely with lots of detail, but there is very little animation so it gets boring very quickly Interactive map lets you jump from place to place Puzzles are pretty standard As far as I played, there were no collectables.
All in all, I wouldn't buy this game as a CE, maybe, big maybe, I would purchase it with a free coupon if it was a SE
As with any game...play the free trial before you decide
