After your success solving several paranormal event cases you seem to have a great reputation so it comes as no surprise when you receive a letter from Bob Price asking for your help to find out why there are so many unusual things happening at his estate. It seems like Bob’s ex-love, Arlene, is not the least bit happy that he seems to have quickly forgotten about her and moved on to a new woman in his life. Things in Bob’s life are going from bad to worse as Arlene doesn’t understand why Bob has so quickly moved onto someone new and she is pitching a fit that would make a two-year old proud. Will you be able to step in and soothe this unhappy spirit and make things better for the inhabitants of Mud Water Creek.
The game offers the custom mode of gameplay that I am happy to see more devs offering in their games. Although there are not too many settings to fiddle with, you can still set the hint and skip times as well as get rid of the dreaded tutorial.
You have a map that you acquire early in the game as well as a special token that is provided by a mysterious benefactor. The token is what some call a gimmick as you must first play a mini-game each time you need to use it.
The HOPS and the mini-games are very good and I found them to be quite enjoyable. Sometimes the HOPS were a bit different and fall into the category of a mini-HOP since you only need to find a certain number of a specific item to complete the scenes. The mini-games are not difficult but I had to fiddle a bit with the one to rebuild the bridge – a puzzle I loved.
The extras seem to be minimal since you really don’t get to view the entire strategy guide until you purchase the game. We have no idea of the length of the game since only two chapters are shown in what information is available. Unfortunately when this happens, I won’t purchase the game. IMHO, if a developer wants to sell me a game, let me see what they are offering me before I part with the full price for a CE.
After playing the demo for the game, I did find it enjoyable but I am still a bit on the fence about the complete game. I dislike the artistic rendering of the scorned woman who is out for revenge who at times she reminds me of the misunderstood muse in another game we had last year. Even though I do like the HOPS and the mini-games, I might wait for the SE release of the game. To all of you who loved the previous Mysteries of the Ancients games, I hope this one will be just as terrific. As always, please try the demo to see if Mud Water Creek is a game you will enjoy.
Mahjong Magic Journey 2 is another of the endless mahjong games from this developer. Although the graphics are lovely and the music is soothing, the game is just the same old game dressed up in fancy graphics.
The game lost me when it presented goals that needed to be met in order to win each level. When I play mahjong it is to relax and not have specific goals to meet such as complete the level in so many moves. As far as I can see, the game settings offer no relaxed mode where I can play this beautiful game at my leisure. Not everyone wants to play a game with preset objectives to meet, and I happen to be one of those who don’t like these types of mahjong games. Take away the level tasks, or at least have an option to play without having level goals, and this game would be a winner; however, as it is presented, it is not a mahjong game I would purchase. For those of you who like playing to beat each level, then I can recommend Mahjong Magic Journey 2 as an absolutely perfect mahjong game for you.
Silver Tale is an amazing combination match 3 and quest type game. The king is gravely ill and is dying and the court healers tried just about everything to cure him all to no avail. There is however, a magical, silver holly plant that is hidden in the deepest chasms and darkest caves in the kingdom, and with a large enough supply the healers will be able to create an elixir that will save the king. You play the game as an adventurer who accepts the challenge and thus begins your journey as you set off to find the hidden silver holly.
The voice overs are one on the best parts of the game with the narration probably some of the best I have heard in games. If you have a previous game from this developer, Runefall, you already have an idea of how top-notch Silver Tale will be as well. The characters you will meet as you travel the land are marvelous and created to perfection. When I first opened the game it had black bars on either side but when I unchecked the maintain ratio aspect the screen filled my monitor. I didn’t notice that anything was too out of proportion when the screen was in the stretched mode and since I would rather not have black bars when playing a game I chose the stretched mode.
As you play through the game you will meet various characters who will need your help with different quests. Once you have filled their requests you can return to those areas on the board to acquire different objects that you might need to move forward. Collect resources that will come in handy as you move through your adventure. Be sure that you pay attention to the needs of your traveling companion as well or you might just find yourself in trouble. You have the option to play the game in relaxed mode if that is how you like to play but you still have goals to meet that require you to complete the boards in a certain number of moves. As you play you will also discover areas of the screen that will open additional boards to complete. Even if you select the relaxed mode you will earn three stars if you meet the level’s goals.
I am a fan of Match 3 games if they are well-crafted and Silver Tale definitely fits the bill. There is a lot to discover as you travel the kingdom and you are sure to have hours of fun as you fulfill quests and find the silver holly to save the king. After playing only a short time in the demo I knew that Silver Tale was a game I wanted to add to my gaming library. Please try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy as well.
Far Kingdoms Magic Mosaics is another of the games in the Far Kingdoms series but most of the have different themes such as match 3, solitaire and now mosaic or pictograms as they are also called.
The Far Kingdoms games have absolutely gorgeous background graphics and this one is no different. The game begins as we meet a mage who has accidentally crossed a portal and he asks your help so that he can return to his own place – wherever that might be. As you play through the various boards you will visit different venues as you help the mage restore his magic runes. In the game the first land we see is a gorgeous underwater place. In this level you will help Neptune find 20 items before he can help you find the magic rune. Since there are 4 runes – earth, water, fire, and air – I imagine we will visit these different vistas to restore the runes. As we play through the various levels we earn coins that can be used to purchase upgrades to our kingdom.
I love this game and think it is a worthy competitor to those other mosaic games that I love. If you enjoy the mosaic, pictogram, nanogram or whatever it is you happen to call these puzzles then I recommend that you try The Far Kingdoms Magic Mosaics. Hopefully you will enjoy it as much as I do and will agree that it is an excellent game.
Clear It is an interesting shooter-puzzle game that unfortunately quickly became rather boring. The concept is great but the game just didn’t have that wow factor or even any spark that would entice me to keep playing.
The settings are minimal as are the instructions, well none are really needed because the game is very simple – clear the board of marbles. A well-placed shot is about all it takes and your objective is soon met. The background music for the game is terrible and kept winking in and out during its continual loop. The game is pretty basic and what you see is what you get. I think I will pass on this one and can’t uninstall it from my game manager quickly enough.
I don’t know how often I play a game where I am the “chosen one” but here is another. Take a step back into the ancient tale of the Minotaur. It was thought that Theseus had killed the Minotaur but a great secret remained. You will play the game as a descendent of Ariadne, who originally gave Theseus the golden thread that helped him with his task to kill the Minotaur and then escape the deadly maze. However, the original myth hid the fact that, although the Minotaur was killed, his soul lived on and now you must enter the maze and prevent an ancient cult from resurrecting him. Will you be up to the task? The story of Theseus and the Minotaur was always one of my favorite tales in Greek mythology so when I saw a game that was based on it, I couldn’t wait to see how the story was told in gameland.
The graphics are excellent but somehow some of the characters seemed a bit off. I am not sure that I cared for all of the voiceovers but for the most part they were okay.
Your tools include an interactive map and Ariadne’s Thread that will help you during your quest.
The HOPS along with the mini-games are what make this an excellent game. The HOPS are mostly the silhouette type and they are very interactive. Some HOPS take patience to find the correct item to get the ball rolling but once you get started you can complete the HOP with ease. The mini-games are mostly easy but I did find some that were challenging. IMHO, there is something for everyone in The Minotaur’s Touch.
After a slow start and not being sure that I liked the game, it did pick up and I found it very enjoyable. The Minotaur’s Touch is not one of my favorite games but it is respectable and I did enjoy my quest. In the end, it was intriguing to see how the developer envisioned one of my favorite classics. Even though I liked the game, please try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy.
You play the game as Princess Lerione who has just reached that magical 21st birthday. As a special gift her mother, Queen Alura, gives her a special amulet with the admonishment to never take it off. Your carriage is soon stopped by a young boy who pleads for your help but as soon as you leave the carriage you realize that things have definitely changed and you are whisked away to the Shadow World – a kingdom that is the exact opposite of all you know and love in your own kingdom. Will you be able to navigate through the perils in your path and return to your home and those you love?
The graphics are gorgeous and the Shadow World is created to perfection. I love the characters that I encountered in the game. The voiceovers are terrific and Sebastian is awesome with his drawn out voice that conveys just the right touch of imperiousness. There is a custom mode included in the game options where hints and mini-game skips can be set in a range of 15 – 275 seconds.
There is an interactive, transporter type map to help you navigate the game and, oh yes, you do have a rascally old feline helper. You also acquire a magic ball that will help you deal with any evil characters who you meet in the Shadow World.
The HOPS are some of the best I have seen in HOPA games and they are very creative. I loved a HOP scene with an old skeleton that had me laughing out loud. The team that created this game is so talented and imaginative that I love it. There are many HOPS in the game and the ones I played were very interactive. IMHO, this game has some of the best HOPS I have seen in ages. The mini-games are terrific as well although some are very easy.
The CE version of the game includes collectibles, morphing objects, achievements, bonus chapter, Strategy Guide, music, wallpapers, concept art, Shadow World Dwellers, and pictures of the development team (something I love because I enjoy seeing the creative genius behind a game).
Love Chronicles has never been one of my favorite series but Beyond the Shadows seems to be a bit improved from the others. The game is creative and it is not always glaringly apparent what needs to be done and where to move forward in the game. As often as I play these games, I did find that I had to use the hint button more than once because I couldn’t figure out where to go next. It is easy to miss little details that will help you through your adventure so be sure to pay attention to everything. Another think I enjoy about the game is that it is one of choices. At first glance I didn’t think I would like this game but looks can be deceiving and as I jumped into the story, I enjoyed it quite a bit more than I thought I would. Beyond the Shadows is a magical game and one that I heartily recommend that you try. Give it a chance because the game, although a bit slow at first, does pick up the pace. We all have different tastes when it comes to HOPA games so please try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy.
It’s time to pull out those dusty chemistry sets and find some special ingredients as we become master alchemists in this new Myths of the World game. Prague is in turmoil and what’s even worse; your father has been arrested and sentenced to death. He is suspected of creating the monsters that are decimating the city so it is now up to you to save your father in this absolutely terrific new Myths of the World Born of Clay and Fire. You play the game as Ilona, the daughter of a respected alchemist in Prague. As you try to save your father you open up some secrets and uncover what might have gone wrong with his work to create golems that would serve the king and citizens of the city.
There are four modes of gameplay that you can choose: Apprentice, Scholar, Grandmaster, and Alchemist (custom mode). In custom mode the hints can be set to recharge in a range of 10 to 120 seconds and the skips offer a range of 10 to 400 seconds. The terrific graphics should not come as a surprise and coupled with the voiceovers and sound we have the total package that creates an excellent game. The game has six chapters and in the CE is accompanied by a 48 page strategy guide – a good indication that this is a game of decent length.
The interactive map is found at beginning of game. Early in the game you acquire Chalk that provides you with a special ability. Thankfully, I didn’t have to complete a mini-game to activate it before use and I wouldn’t classify it as a gimmick.
The HOS are nothing new but are interactive and excellent. The HOS include a nice mix of scenes including silhouette, list, very interactive and storybook that help to keep things interesting. If you enjoy the mini-games then you will find some excellent ones in Born of Clay and Fire. IMHO, the mini-games seem to be a bit more challenging and some I haven’t seen before. Although I hate to do it, I had to skip one of the minis early in the game because I couldn’t figure out how it worked. Guess I will have to cheat and peek at the SG I know that many gamers are much better at understanding and completing some mini-games so for them they might seem easy but for me they were more challenging than usual, which I do happen to like.
Myths of the World has become one of my favorite series and I eagerly look forward to each new game knowing that fun times lie ahead. Born of Clay and Fire is no exception and I was captured by the demo and knew this was a game I had to add to my library. The story is put together in a logical manner and is quite interesting, which coupled with the gameplay and all of the other features make the entire game excellent. This developer has a knack of creating some of the most interesting games on the market and this one seems to be close to the top of the list. After playing the beta for the game, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the full release to see how it all plays out. Even though I happen to love the game, please try the demo to see if it is one you will enjoy.

TOWN OF LOST HOPE IS EVERYTHING I EXPECT IN A PHANTASMAT GAME

fromFrantically searching for a way to hide and get out of town
While taking your brother and his girlfriend to his “big game” you find yourself hopelessly lost, so with the gas tank almost empty you stop at a rundown gas station to fill up. Yes you guessed it; this was your first mistake and one that turns drops you right in the middle of a nightmare. After a bump on the head, you wake up in a dingy room being cared for by an old woman who informs you that her son is out looking for your brother and his friend. What happened and who would want to attack you? It isn’t long before you realize that you are being held captive and you begin a frantic search for the missing teens. Play this creepy new Phantasmat and see if you can make it out of this abandoned old town unscathed.
Town of Lost Hope has all of the technical aspects we expect to find from this game dev. The popular custom mode is included for those of you who like to fiddle with the settings when playing a game. The graphics are excellent and create the perfect atmosphere for this excellent creepy game.
You have an interactive map that will help you navigate the game. There are no special gimmicks in sight so you will need to use your wits to escape the Town of Lost Hope.
The HOPS are varied and some are multi-level. I am not going to set out the nitty-gritty spoilers for all the HOPS and mini-games because it is more fun if you find out what they are as you play the game. After all, if you know all the details, why even bother playing the game! I can tell you I think that both the HOPS and mini-games are excellent with some of the mini-games presenting more than a bit of challenge.
The CE includes a decent array of extras that include collectibles, morphing objects, achievements, bonus chapter and the Strategy Guide. All of the other standard fluff that we normally find in CE games is included as well.
It seems as if we are now going to get more creepy games since we had two of them last week and this week’s first CE offering is another wonderful game that follows that trend. Although I really enjoy games with more of the “creepy” factor, I found this one at times to be disturbing, containing a good dose of psychological thriller element. At times I was on the edge of my chair and looking over my shoulder as I played. This awesome developer has given the Phantasmat series a new look and made the games in the series everything we could hope for – that is, is you enjoy this type of game. I certainly love it and find Town of Lost Hope to be one of the best games in the series. That being said, even though I love the game, it might not be for you so please try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy.
Fantasy Quest 2 is from a developer whose puzzle game Stones of Rome (also found here at BFG) is one of my favorite games. So with that being said, I was excited to try the demo of today’s game. As we begin the game we meet our Fairy guide, July, and soon we meet King Feodor who is the ruler of all the fairly lands. King Feodor has a problem because Dove Lake has become tainted with poison right before HIS big celebration. What a catastrophe. Fortunately he encounters you and Fairy July who he soon appoints to fix the problem. So off you go with July to find Fairy Leaf, who is a master, of sorts, working with potions. Well, sometimes her potions work and at others there might be rather disastrous results.
The graphics are excellent and, although there are no voiceovers the dialogue is easy to read. The dialogue is very humorous and I found myself laughing out loud as I read it. Fairy July is a hoot to say the least, and I enjoyed tagging along with her as I met the various characters in the game. When we get into the actual game we have a choice of three different types of match 3 games that we can choose – something I happen to like because some gamers like one style more than another. They styles available are the traditional swap, with the other two being the chain or group type. Not all levels in the game are match 3 but some will be a solitaire game. As you play the game you will have different goals on the levels and you will have the opportunity to earn power-ups as well.
If you enjoy match 3 type games, then I recommend that you try Fantasy Quest 2 because you might really like it. The dialogue alone was enough reason for me to purchase the game. So, we have a fun match 3 game with a humorous storyline that becomes more entertaining as we travel along and meet up with the different characters in the game. For me the game was so entertaining that the demo time was up before I knew it. Fantasy Quest 2 is a definite buy for me but, as always, please try the demo to see if it is a game you will enjoy.
