Wow, what an amazing game that has now raised the bar for any future games in the Haunted Hotel series. I loved the beta for this game and have been eagerly awaiting its release and now it is finally here!
Everything about this game is almost perfect with excellent graphics, top-notch voiceovers, and a great storyline that grabbed me from the beginning. There are interesting and varied HOPS, and fairly challenging puzzles as well to keep things interesting. Just when I was beginning to burn out on HOPA games there is now an exciting game that is geared to the adults who are interested in more than cutesy fairies and princesses. Here is a gritty game with a mature theme and some ghostly scares.
It is a dark and snowy night as you are traveling a road in the state of Washington on your way to visit the Axiom Hotel. You are stopped along the way by a patrolman whose car has spun out on the road so you give him a lift to the hotel since that is his destination as well. No sooner do you arrive than things begin to happen that will test your investigative skill. The game has a cast of interesting characters one of which might be a copycat serial killer.

Pull out all the stops as you solve interesting mini-games, search for clues in varied HOPS and hopefully find out whom or what is killing the guests at the Axiom Hotel. The mini-games are quite good with some even challenging. I am not going to give you all the spoilers and details since it really is more fun to find out what they entail by playing the game for yourself.
The CE includes all of the wonderful extras that this development team includes in their CE games. There are collectibles, morphing objects, achievements, the bonus chapter, strategy guide and more. IMHO Haunted Hotel the Axiom Butcher is an excellent CE value.
There was no way I was going to be able to wait another month for the SE release of this game so I purchased it before even bothering to download the demo. I loved every minute of the beta and couldn’t wait to get my hands on this game. There are some creepy and downright scary moments that come together to create what I consider one of the best games this year. The game might not be for everyone so please try the demo to make sure this is a game you will enjoy.

As a detective you arrive at the scene of a huge fire and it is not long before you are in the middle of the action. The local asylum is burning and the firefighters are quickly losing the battle to save it as somehow the fire seems very unnatural. The firefighters are having extreme difficulty in controlling the blaze that could easily spread to the adjacent town so you jump in and help. As you gain entry to the asylum you are faced with the horror of what lies within its walls. Hopefully, you will be able to find survivors and maybe find out what is causing the devastation.
There are four modes of gameplay to select and the custom mode is included as one of your choices. In custom mode the hints and skips can be set in the range of 10 – 500 seconds. The graphics are crisp with some very creepy hand drawn artwork that is reminiscent of those in some of the MCF games. Although some scenes might be quite gorgeous, others are very dingy. The sound effects add to the creepy nature of the game and more than a few of you might find them a bit disturbing; I sure know that I did! Even though I was a bit rattled, it doesn’t mean that I didn’t think they added to the game or that I didn’t like them because they were absolutely perfect and set the entire tone of the game.
Very early in the game you will find an interactive, transporter type map that will show where you have tasks or objectives.
The HOPS in The Everburning Candle are some of the best I have ever played. I love some of the innovation that the developer has used that definitely set this game apart from others. I am not going to spend a lot of time telling you about the HOPS or the mini-games but I loved all of them. Although some of the mini-games are familiar, they have a different spin to them and are quite excellent. Some might seem a bit difficult but they just take a bit of time to figure out so they are doable without a lot of stress factor.
In the CE version of the game there are collectible marbles to be found and they are located in each scene. Of course we have those meaningless achievements (at least they don’t rock my world) but not much else aside from the standard fluff.
Although I absolutely think that this latest Whispered Secrets game is by far the best in the series, I have to say that many gamers might find it a bit disturbing. That aside, I strongly urge you to try the demo before you purchase the game. I happen to be a fan of some of the more creepy games but this one had me a bit on edge at times. That doesn’t mean that I didn’t like it because I did. It is only my humble opinion but I believe that this is probably one of the finest games we have ever had from this developer and I would love to see more like it. There are so many of the innovative gameplay features in the game that I couldn’t wait to hit the buy button and continue with the full game. . The Everburning Candle is certainly not your run of the mill so-so HOPA game. Just when I have become bored with many of the games I have played this year, we have two excellent games in the same week and I am thrilled to say the least. As I mentioned above, please try the demo of The Everburning Candle to see if this is a game you will like.

Edge of Reality, Ring of Destiny is a game that is sure to delight those of us who are dog lovers. In the beginning cutscene we learn that there are powerful artifacts that when found have the ability to change history and destiny. This is where we first meet, Ice, a special dog who is sent on a “mission” to find the chosen one – someone who is worthy of wearing the Ring of Destiny.
As the game begins you are on a trip to the local animal shelter, where you are immediately drawn to Ice who melts your heart, so off you go with your new pal to meet your destiny. A fantastic journey begins as you are drawn into an adventure to save Agora a world that is plagued by dark shadows that are controlled by the evil queen Glivera. With the help of Ice and many other new friends that you meet along the way, learn to use powerful tools and save Agora from the Shadow Queen.
The game offers several modes of difficulty including a custom mode where you have various options to set up the game for how you like to play. The hand drawn graphics are for the most part quite good but sometimes they do seem a bit fuzzy. The voiceovers are excellent as are the music and special sound effects.
Your tools include an interactive map as well as several special items that will be found during your journey. Early in the game you are tasked with learning how to use each tool so that you will be able to wield its power when needed. Of course, you also have Ice who will accompany you throughout the game but he isn’t one of those annoying pet helpers that you need to dress or feed before he will help you.
The HOPS are well crafted, varied in style and quite enjoyable. There is interaction required to find some items in the HOPS and because of that many of the scenes contain mini-games that you will need to complete. The puzzles or mini-games seem may seem very easy for some gamers but that is not the case for everyone. I actually found some of the puzzles a bit more difficult but they are still fun and doable.
The CE version of the game includes 46 collectible dragons to find, some of which seem difficult to spot. There are achievements to earn along with the other standard fluff that is normally found. That being said and although I don’t generally bother with wallpapers or screensavers, some of the artwork is amazing and you might want to add it to your collection; there is a dragon that I will definitely add to mine.
When I played the demo of the game I wasn’t sure it thrilled me but as it progressed and I was sucked into the story it became a game I really enjoyed. Although it is the familiar storyline it is still what I consider to be an excellent game. Yes the graphics could have been a bit crisper but they still create the wonderful world of Agora that is full of interesting characters. I love dragons and that is another plus for me with Ring of Destiny. Even though I love this game, please try the demo to see if it is a game you will enjoy.
I recommend this game!

In Vampire Legends The Count of New Orleans we follow the story of the infamous Carter Brothers who were convicted of mass murder in 1932 and executed shortly thereafter. According to the story the body count for the Carters was around 14 people but there may have been even more victims. As a journalist interested in paranormal phenomena you travel to New Orleans to find out more about the Carter Brothers and their alleged tie to vampirism; however, maybe you have stumbled into something more than you could have imagined. Follow the clues and if you are lucky you might survive your trip to New Orleans.
The game offers a custom mode of gameplay so you can click on various settings to customize the game for the way you like to play. The game to be a blend of computerized and hand drawn artwork – a style that is not my favorite as I am a huge fan of excellent hand drawn art. The game has voiceovers are excellent and much more realistic than those in some casual games – probably some of the best. I love the Count’s French accent when we finally meet him.
Your tools include an interactive map as well as a journal that keeps track of your tasks and various information that you gather during your adventure. You also have a camera and the ability to develop film in your makeshift darkroom. You can transport quickly to your darkroom from any location during the game when you need to develop the photos you have snapped.
The HOS are interactive and okay but nothing out of the ordinary from what we have come to expect in the HOPA genre of games; however, I did enjoy the variety and the interaction that was required to complete some of the scenes. The mini-games were excellent, and although none of them were frustratingly difficult, they were still excellent.
I am not a huge fan of vampire games but the Vampire Legends games are excellent. The game has some scary moments that even though I knew were coming still caused me to jump and that is always a bit of extra fun. After playing the entire game I was still impressed. The mini-games were very good and each one added to my enjoyment of the gameplay AND they fit well into the storyline. If you like vampire inspired games then you will probably enjoy The Count of New Orleans. Please try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy as we all have different tastes.

Amaranthine Voyage Winter Neverending is game number six of the series and I keep holding out hope that maybe, just maybe this time they will get it right and offer a game that is worthy. Well, I don’t think that Winter Neverending is that game. Eve Glover is back and for a top-notch scientist she seems quite clueless. On the trail of the latest distress signal, Dr. Glover crosses the portal and arrives in a wintry vista that presents a chilly challenge for her latest foray into other worlds.
I really don’t have to mention the HOPS or the mini-games because there is nothing new. If you have played other games by this developer, then you have already seen what the game contains. Granted the wrapping is new but the basic content is the same recycled thing.
The storyline seems to be based on a 1970s sci-fi film that I loved but as much as loved that film there is not really much about the game that is the least bit stimulating. It is just another of the recent repetitive games being cranked out by this developer at an alarming rate. Where once HOPA games were something to look forward to they have now become humdrum and same old, same old - offering nothing new and exciting. I never thought I would find myself in the frame of mind where the games I once loved would all become ventures into tedium but that time has arrived. I am eagerly waiting for new storylines and new challenges, something to whet my appetite and capture my interest. Perhaps those games no longer exist but I keep hoping that they do. That being said, I am sure that Winter Neverending will be enjoyed by many who might be new to playing HOPA games. The game is a good solid quality game and even though it might not be to my liking, and unfortunately, doesn’t have what I am craving it will be an excellent game for some. Even though I didn’t care for Amaranthine Voyage Winter Neverending, please try the demo because you might find it to be a game you will love.

If you are a fan of Greek mythology you are sure to be captured by this latest game in the Dark Romance series. Although the developers have taken a great deal of creative license in Kingdom of Death it still will appeal to those who love these ancient myths. As in the previous games we have the unique feature of playing both of the star-crossed lovers. Will true love overcome the power struggle between Zeus and his brothers – Poseidon and Hades? Play this terrific game as you encounter other fantastic creatures from mythology.
The game does offer the custom setting, which is the one I normally select if it is available. Even on custom the lowest recharge time for hints and skips is a bit high but that is only my opinion. The graphics are excellent as are the voiceovers. I am very impressed by the realistic characters and love the richness of the overall graphics.
Your tools include an interactive, transporter type map as well as a scroll that includes your current tasks. I didn’t come across anything that appears to be a gimmick but even if there is one included, I am sure it will fit well with the storyline.
The HOPS are varied, interactive and interesting but if you don’t like completing the HOP scenes you have an alternate match-3 type game. As you play through the game, keep your eyes open and look at everything because you never know when you will find a power-up that will help you with the match-3 option. I am really very impressed by all of the extra little touches the developer has added to Kingdom of Death that make it very entertaining. I have played so many HOPA games over the past ten years that when I find something new and unexpected it is very refreshing and revives my interest in the HOPA genre of games. Kudos to this development team for taking the time to create a game with so many extra touches and little surprises. There is not a lot to say about the mini-games because there doesn’t seem to be anything new but they are still enjoyable. As is the case in most games, I suspect the mini-games will increase in difficulty as the game progresses.
There is not a lot to say about the CE version of the game except that it is packed with extras. There are several sets of items to be found and that includes all of those hidden power-ups. There are the usual achievements as well as the standard extras such as the bonus game and the strategy guide. If you enjoy the wallpapers and concept art then this is definitely a game you will want to have.
What a surprising and excellent game that caught me off-guard because I really didn’t think I would like this one as much as I do. The last game in the series was not nearly as entertaining so I didn’t expect that I would care for Kingdom of Death but as a lifetime fan of Greek mythology, this game is just perfect for me even though does take a lot of liberties with the myths. If you are a romantic at heart and enjoy a good love story then Dark Romance Kingdom of Death might be the perfect game for you. I would like to thank BFG and the developers who did an amazing job in creating this game. Although I love this game and purchased it almost immediately, please try the demo to see if this is a game you will like.
I recommend this game!

To the sound of bouncy, repetitive music we meet our guide, BunBun, as we begin our romp through this sugary game. BunBun asks us to help him solve some puzzles so that he can get back to his bestie, Alissa, and the next thing we know we are up to our eyebrows in walls of the sweet stuff. It appears that Alissa isn’t missing at all and she joins us on our quest as we enter candy match land.
Yummy Dreams seems to be geared towards the kiddies in the family as it is a very simple match 3 type game that tries to continue the trend of the “Candy” types of games already on the market. Perhaps it is just me but I am really tired of these dime a dozen candy games. One of the things that I dislike in a game is when right off the bat I am asked to enter my name but then have to backspace or erase “player” before doing so. IMHO, it looks like a lack of expertise when a game is not programmed to clear that field automatically as I start typing. Sorry but that bugs me and I see no need for it to happen.
As we play the game we soon notice the similarities to the other candy type games where we must complete the levels in a certain amount of moves. I for one have seen enough of these copycat games to satisfy my sweet tooth for many years to come. In the end, there is just not anything that would stimulate my interest enough to play through the first few levels. For those of you who have young children or grandchildren at home, Yummy Dreams would be a nice game to keep them occupied for at least a few minutes. As for me, I am not interested. Please try the demo because Yummy Dreams might be the sweet game for you
I recommend this game!

After being apart for many years, you have journeyed to Cuba to reunite with your brother and play at his new top of the line nightclub in Havana. You are only briefly reunited with Jesse before he is shot by a crazed sailor and, even worse, his murder is pinned on you. Behind all of this is a sinister and dark story. Now you must prove your innocence before you can find out who shot Jesse and why.

The game offers four modes of gameplay with Improviser being the custom mode – Novice, Artist, Virtuoso, and Improviser. In custom mode you can set your hints and skips to recharge in a range of 15 to 90 seconds. The graphics are terrific and I love the sound package that whisks me back in time to 1950s Cuba. You find and interactive map early in the game that will help you navigate the streets of Havana.
The best thing about this game is the HOP scenes that offer a large variety, while at the other end of the scale we have uninspired mini-games. Although game developers have increased the difficulty level of their mini-games we find this one has not followed that trend; and as a result. the minis appear seem boring and nothing more than time fillers. It is sad because with all the other great things about the game here is the weak point and one that most of us will remember. I realize that there are many gamers out there who are not as passionate about having great and challenging mini-games so they might really enjoy Havana Nights.
When I played the CE I thought that this might be the best game in the series but I was wrong. The game quickly became nothing more than a tedious find this/do that game. Although I love the background music that is good for what it is, it certainly is not the Cadenza I know and love for its great jazz background music. As a final thought the game is just so-so and even a bit boring. Even though I didn’t really care for the game, please try the demo because you might love it.

After defeating the arch demon Ragnar, you have been called in to investigate a crime that seems to have demon written all over it. In Demon Hunter 3: Revelation, you are investigating the murder of a local woman whose daughter is now missing. Your old friend detective Brown has asked for your help, so you agree to take a look and see what you can find. Sure enough you do find things that indicate this is indeed a supernatural case.
When I played the beta for the game the graphics were quite mediocre at best and I was quite happy to see that the dev has polished them up a bit before releasing the game. The graphics are now much crisper and I’m happy they managed to keep the eeriness that gives the game a great spooky feel. The game does offer four modes of gameplay that include the custom mode. If you select the custom mode the hints recharge in a range of 5 to 90 seconds and mini-game skips in a range of 5 to 120 seconds and you can also get rid of that dreaded misclick penalty.
You have an interactive transporter type map that is present when you begin the game. I suspect at some point there will be another tool but it is not present during the game demo.
The HOPS present a variety of styles most of them familiar but I like the way the developer has set them up to offer a bit of a change from what we normally find. That feature alone makes the game worth playing. Unfortunately, I found some of the items difficult to locate in the scenes, and that is particularly true in those where we must find items according to silhouettes. The mini-games are awesome and without a doubt one of the best parts of this game. Some of the minis are very challenging so I did skip them during the demo but can’t wait to get into the full game and take my time while I enjoy solving them.
The CE version of the game has three different types of collectibles that include dolls, coins, and portraits. There are morphing objects found in some HOPS and achievements as well. I like that we can replay the HOPS and mini-games because in a game where the minis are quite excellent this is a huge CE benefit. Other items include the standards that we find in most CE games such as a bonus chapter, strategy guide, music, wallpapers, artwork, and screensavers.
Demon Hunter Revelation is an awesome game and although we are dealing with another demon, a storyline that is becoming a bit too over-done, I still love this game and everything it has to offer particularly the HOPS and mini-games. The development team has done a terrific job of putting together a game that is sure to please those of us who enjoy spooky games. Even though I love this game, please try the demo to see if it is a game you will enjoy.
I recommend this game!

Emma Roberts is back and this time her boss has asked her to track down a co-worker who is missing. Not only is Jack a co-worker but Emma considers him a friend as well. When Emma arrives at the Black River Ranch it doesn’t take her long to figure out that things are terribly wrong. She cannot get a straight answer from the reclusive owner of the ranch and there is something very odd about the maid, Lisa. Sign on for another episode in the Fear for Sale franchise and discover what Emma will do to save the day in this latest game, The House on Black River.
Even though there is a custom mode, IMHO, it is rather useless. The hint and skip buttons are sliders with the right end of the slider turning off the hint and skip times. The graphics are very good but there is a bit too much orange/blue tone for my liking. The graphics are a bit foggy in the opening scenes but improve considerably once Emma arrives in Eastwood to start her investigation.
Your tools include an interactive map that you acquire early in the game. The thing I like about the maps in this devs games is that they show where we have found all of the collectibles or where some might be missing. The voiceovers are very good with the Emma/Carrie voice used by this developer being very familiar.
The game comes to us from one of my very favorite devs who has created another series that I really love. One of the things that I enjoy most about their games is that their HOP scenes are excellent and they were the first to offer “the uncover so many of a certain item to open the HOP scene” style that has since been emulated by other devs. Of course if you have played other games by this developer, then you probably enjoy their HOPS as much as I do with this game offering a few new twists to the scenes. The HOPS are not overly interactive but some items can be tricky to figure out. For the most part, the scenes are list type but there is certainly some variety as well. The puzzles are not difficult, but they do become more difficult as the game progresses. I don’t think it is necessary to share the details of most HOPS or the puzzles because, IMHO, discovery is half the fun in playing a game. If you want the details there is another reviewer who pretty much lets you in on all the secrets and I recommend her excellent reviews.
I love the Fear for Sale series and I really enjoyed The House on Black River. The storyline was well told and consistent without jumping all over the place. It was great to follow a storyline that was definitely leading me toward to conclusion and developing the characters as it played out. This is probably one of the best games in the series with all of the components coming together to create a game that was at times challenging. What could be better, an eerie house, a reclusive artist, a very strange maid and you to sort it all out. All of these elements add up to one great game. Of course with the Fear for Sale games being from one of my favorite game developers, it is perfect for me. Please try the demo to see if The House on Black River is a game you will enjoy.
