After defeating the arch demon Ragnar, you have been called in to investigate a crime that seems to have demon written all over it. In Demon Hunter 3: Revelation, you are investigating the murder of a local woman whose daughter is now missing. Your old friend detective Brown has asked for your help, so you agree to take a look and see what you can find. Sure enough you do find things that indicate this is indeed a supernatural case.
When I played the beta for the game the graphics were quite mediocre at best and I was quite happy to see that the dev has polished them up a bit before releasing the game. The graphics are now much crisper and I’m happy they managed to keep the eeriness that gives the game a great spooky feel. The game does offer four modes of gameplay that include the custom mode. If you select the custom mode the hints recharge in a range of 5 to 90 seconds and mini-game skips in a range of 5 to 120 seconds and you can also get rid of that dreaded misclick penalty.
You have an interactive transporter type map that is present when you begin the game.
The HOPS present a variety of styles most of them familiar but I like the way the developer has set them up to offer a bit of a change from what we normally find. That feature alone makes the game worth playing. Unfortunately, I found some of the items difficult to locate in the scenes, and that is particularly true in those where we must find items according to silhouettes. The mini-games are awesome and without a doubt one of the best parts of this game. Some of the minis are very challenging so I did skip them during the demo but can’t wait to get into the full game and take my time while I enjoy solving them.
Demon Hunter Revelation is an awesome game and although we are dealing with another demon, a storyline that is becoming a bit too over-done, I still love this game and everything it has to offer particularly the HOPS and mini-games. The development team has done a terrific job of putting together a game that is sure to please those of us who enjoy spooky games. Even though I love this game, please try the demo to see if it is a game you will enjoy.
After your success solving several paranormal event cases you seem to have a great reputation so it comes as no surprise when you receive a letter from Bob Price asking for your help to find out why there are so many unusual things happening at his estate. It seems like the Bob’s ex-love, Arlene, is not the least bit happy that he seems to have quickly forgotten about her and moved on to a new woman in his life. Things in Bob’s life are going from bad to worse as Arlene doesn’t understand why Bob has so quickly moved onto someone new and she is pitching a fit that would make a two-year old proud. Will you be able to step in and soothe this unhappy spirit and make things better for the inhabitants of Mud Water Creek.
The game offers the custom mode of gameplay that I am happy to see more devs offering in their games. Although there are not too many settings to fiddle with, you can still set the hint and skip times as well as get rid of the dreaded tutorial.
You have a map that you acquire early in the game as well as a special token that is provided by a mysterious benefactor. The token is what some call a gimmick as you must first play a mini-game each time you need to use it.
The HOPS and the mini-games are very good and I found them to be quite enjoyable. Sometimes the HOPS were a bit different and fall into the category of a mini-HOP since you only need to find a certain number of a specific item to complete the scenes. The mini-games are not difficult but I had to fiddle a bit with the one to rebuild the bridge – a puzzle I loved.
I purchased the CE and it was much better than I expected. The gameplay had some challenge for me and I did need to think about what to do since all things were not glaringly obvious. All in all, Mud Water Creek is a good game even though it may not one of the best this year. The one thing that put me off is artistic rendering of the scorned woman who is To all of you who loved the previous Mysteries of the Ancients games, I hope this one will be just as terrific. As always, please try the demo to see if Mud Water Creek is a game you will enjoy.
Yes once again you are in the role of an agent for the Curio Society and this time you are matching wits with Frederick, a scientist who has perfected a potion to rid people of their emotions – good and bad. Frederick has enlisted the aid of your nemesis Susanna, an ex-agent of the society, who was expelled for her traitorous acts. Susanna has a score to settle and Frederick offers her the perfect opportunity to wreak havoc for the society.
The game offers a custom mode but, IMHO, it is rather useless. The graphics are good but the voice acting is really bad. Although the premise of the game depicts an emotionless society with rather robotic people, the voices could have been far better. Not only are the voices flat and unappealing in some cases the lip-sync is so far of the mark that it is almost laughable.
The HOP scenes are very good and most of them are quite interactive. Most scenes rely on finding items by silhouette but the silhouettes are good so it is easy to determine what item should be found. For those of you who would rather not search for items there is a match 3 option included in each scene. Even though the HOPS are good the puzzles are almost too easy with very little challenge required to solve them, which makes the game seem rather ho-hum and boring.
The CE version of the game includes quite a few extras and if you are a gamer who loves earning achievements you have hit the motherlode with 32 to be earned by playing the game. There are morphing objects, Rorschach cards, and medical profiles to be found but not every scene includes the differing types. Along with the standard fluff there is a Personality Test and an Archive. It is very difficult to determine what these extras involve since this developer hides most of the content including how many chapters can be found in the game until it is purchased.
The Curio Society games have never been ones that thrill me and The New Order is just as mediocre as the others. I can’t say that I hated the game but I most assuredly did not like it. There was nothing entertaining or appealing enough to make me want to play past the demo point so it is going in the trash. Many gamers will love this game but The New Order is definitely not for me. Even though I don’t like the game, please try the demo because it might be one you will enjoy.
The title just about says it all. I have every Fantasy Mosaics game and then most of the World Mosaics that came out years ago. I love griddlers, nanograms, or whatever they are called type puzzles. I can spend hours solving all of the boards. In this field of games there is only one mosaics game that I don’t like and that is because of the built-in timing mechanism.
Rainbow Mosaics Treasure Trips is almost everything I look for in these types of games. It has colorful boards, lovely graphics and NO TIMER. The music does tend to be a bit annoying but I turned it down and that helps. The only difficulty I have with the game is that the number designations are very faint and difficult to see when using some of the different colors. I think the coloring on the side panels is what causes this issue and hopefully in future games this problem can be corrected. It isn’t fun to play a game that causes eye-strain and too much guessing.
Since I happen to love mosaic type puzzles it was a no-brainer for me to purchase the game. For others out there who love the Fantasy Mosaics series, I suggest that you might like Rainbow Mosaics as well. It is a well-constructed game and one I am thoroughly enjoying at the moment. Please try the demo to see if you agree that Rainbow Mosaics is a great game.
You play the game as the daughter of the governor of an island in the West Indies who has finally come to visit your father after the passing of your mother. Unfortunately, you are kidnapped just as you arrive, separating you from your father and putting you into the perilous situation of walking the line between warring factions. There is the Pirate King, who rather resembles the fabled Blackbeard, and others who are bent on destroying him. Shortly after your capture you find an unlikely ally in the ship’s captain who helps you escape and starts you on your adventure.
The gameplay modes include the custom setting where you can select your hint and skip times as well as a few other options. The graphics are absolutely top-notch have create the pirates’ island haven to perfection.
The HOS are familiar and what we normally see from this developer. In the demo I only saw one scene where we must find five each of two different items to open the list – a mechanism that has been quite overused. One HOP scene I really liked is where I had to find clothes so that I could camouflage myself as a pirate. Several of the HOS were multi-level and even though they are familiar were enjoyable. The mini-games were good as well and include finding symbols to open a box, place statues in the proper position by moving their limbs, find your way through the jungle by using a map, place weights to position a bridge, and others that are fairly simple. My favorite mini-game was a slider puzzle that requires removing the sliders in the correct order to open a path. All in all even though there were not any difficult mini-games I still found them fun to solve.
The CE version includes the following extras: 41 messages in a bottle, 6 chests, and 25 souvenirs to find after you complete the main and bonus games. Morphing objects can be found in the HOP scenes so keep your eyes open to see if you can spot them. Of course you can earn achievements as you play through the game. Other extras include the Strategy Guide, Replay of HOPS and Puzzles, Music, Video, Pictures, and a Souvenir Room. There is also a tribute video for the series that will highlight scenes from all Sea of Lies games.
The Sea of Lies series is not my favorite and I found the game to be a bit boring in the beginning. Because the game comes from a great developer who can put together a terrific game package Sea of Lies Leviathan Reef will appeal to many of you who like the series and pirate games. Although there were parts of the game I really enjoyed, most of it seemed to be a lot of effort for very little reward. The game played like every other game from this developer and it is very obvious that it follows the same canned game formula. The game seems predictable and because I don’t care for pirates, it’s just not my cup of tea. The dev recently announced that this series is sailing into the sunset with Leviathan Reef and I think it is an overdue voyage. Maybe they will come up with something different for us to enjoy such as a great sci-fi game series. For those of you who like the Sea of Lies series, it is an excellent game and one that many will enjoy but for me it is one that doesn’t knock me out of my socks. As always, please try the demo to see if this is the game for you.
I recommend this game!

EVERYTHING I EXPECT IN A PHANTASMAT GAME

fromYou need your wits to find your brother and get out of town
While taking your brother and his girlfriend to his “big game” you find yourself hopelessly lost, so with the gas tank almost empty you stop at a rundown gas station to fill up. Yes you guessed it; this was your first mistake and one that turns drops you right in the middle of a nightmare. After a bump on the head, you wake up in a dingy room being cared for by an old woman who informs you that her son is out looking for your brother and his friend. What happened and who would want to attack you? It isn’t long before you realize that you are being held captive and you begin a frantic search for the missing teens. Play this creepy new Phantasmat and see if you can make it out of this abandoned old town unscathed.
Town of Lost Hope has all of the technical aspects we expect to find from this game dev. The popular custom mode is included for those of you who like to fiddle with the settings when playing a game. The graphics are excellent and create the perfect atmosphere for this excellent creepy game.
You have an interactive map that will help you navigate the game. There are no special gimmicks in sight so you will need to use your wits to escape the Town of Lost Hope.
The HOPS are varied and some are multi-level. I am not going to set out the nitty-gritty spoilers for all the HOPS and mini-games because it is more fun if you find out what they are as you play the game. After all, if you know all the details, why even bother playing the game! I can tell you I think that both the HOPS and mini-games are excellent with some of the mini-games presenting more than a bit of challenge.
Although I really enjoy games with more of the “creepy” factor, I found this one at times to be disturbing, containing a good dose of psychological thriller element. At times I was on the edge of my chair and looking over my shoulder as I played. This awesome developer has given the Phantasmat series a new look and made the games in the series everything we could hope for – that is, is you enjoy this type of game. I certainly love it and find Town of Lost Hope to be one of the best games in the series. That being said, even though I love the game, it might not be for you so please try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy
The game begins with a “smashing” taxi ride to Redemption Cemetery where you find yourself at Death’s Door. You discover there is a way out but that begins with releasing the Keeper of the Cemetery who was long ago imprisoned by, yes you guessed it, an evil spirit. Once you release the Keeper you are told that to return home you must help three spirits find peace, which is the theme of all games in this series. To help each spirit you must enter their past and find what is holding them from finding their eternal rest.
This game is from one of my favorite game devs who was the first one to get me interested in HOPA games years ago. I love their wonderful hand-drawn artwork that brings the characters such a sense of emotion and realism. The overall graphics are absolutely excellent and then couple that with a terrific sound package it creates the type of game that I love to play. The game also offers four modes of gameplay to select from that includes a custom mode so you can fiddle with the settings. However, there is one thing I dislike in the custom mode and that is the slider used to set the hint and skip times that are not independent of each other. Adjusting the hint to a lower setting will elevate the mini-game skip time, which is a feature I absolutely hate since I like my hint and skip times set the same and that is generally different than the times available.
Your only tool is an interactive map that is present at the beginning of the game. A refreshing change is that there is no gimmicky tool included.
The HOPS are varied and, yes, they are often visited more than once. Some examples include the story type where you must find the items listed in bold in each sentence. There is some interaction required to find items in this scene. Another scene is one where items are found by silhouette and this one also requires some interaction. Then there are the standard list type scenes as well. All in all I found that I really liked the HOPS in the game and found most items fairly easy to spot as well as the actions that would be needed to complete an item. The mini-games are excellent and most of them had a fairly decent level of challenge. There were several that I really enjoyed such as the one where we rotate circles and swap their pieces so the colors and patterns match. The only mini-game that was involved moving skeletal arms to open a door but then moving one arm moves the others. For some reason the Bunny includes this puzzle frequently in its games and the interaction is generally tougher to figure out than in similar puzzles from other devs. There is another mini-game that occurs when we open a portal to the life of a spirit who we are helping. I found the puzzle to be a fairly time-consuming so I did skip it in the demo but will take the time to solve it in the full game since I really liked this one.
In the CE version of the game we will search for time-related items that are the only collectibles in the game. You can also earn achievements if that is something you like to do. Other extras include the Strategy Guide, Bonus Chapter, Music, Video, Wallpaper, Screensavers, Replay of 20 HOP scenes and 18 mini-games
Even though I did not care for the previous Redemption Cemetery game this one is quite good. Yes we are dealing with an evil being once again so there is nothing new here but I really enjoyed moving through each part of the game. At Death's Door seems a bit more difficult than some of the dev’s recent games and it is not always obvious what you need to find. I had to use the hint button a couple of times just to get going but once I found those elusive and important items the game opened up a bit. I can hardly wait to play the entire game because it is so good. My only concern is that the demo portion completed the story of one spirit and with only two more to go, it might be a short game. For me though even short games take a bit longer since I love to play slowly and gawk at everything I see. Even though I really like this game, please try the demo to see if At Death’s Door will be a game you will enjoy.
Mosaics type games are some of my favorite and this one Mosaics Galore 2 is gorgeous with its wonderful elven theme. I love the graphics that are rich and colorful and when combined with the soundtrack create quite a relaxing environment for those times when all I want to do is solve puzzles one or two at a time.
Right off the bat I will tell you what I don’t like and get that out of the way because it is such a pet peeve. When I select a relaxed mode of gameplay, I don’t expect to earn stars or meet other goals so when I see that in Mosaics Galore 2 I select the relaxed mode, it becomes annoying when I see that I am still “awarded” keys for meeting a time limit or making mistakes. That aside though, I will put my annoyance aside and not care if I meet the game’s goals but that doesn’t mean that the developer should just forget what Relaxed Mode means. It should mean no goals to be met, only a relaxing gaming experience. So now I can get off my soapbox. For those of you who love challenges and playing beat the clock, I am sure you will love to test your puzzle solving skills to see if you can solve the puzzles in the allotted time.
I love building the mosaic puzzles that become more difficult as we progress. There are many different types of puzzles and levels to be enjoyed which makes these games a something to be enjoyed for many hours of entertainment. If you haven’t played mosaics puzzles before then I recommend that you try the demo to see if you will enjoy this one. If, like me, you enjoy mosaics puzzles then I am sure you will want to add this one to your collection. I know I did and for me it is a definite purchase.
You play the game as a famed spiritualist and psychic who is directed to investigate the supernatural events at a nearby estate that houses The LeForge School of Ballet, one of the most prestigious to be found. However when you arrive at the school you must confront several areas of dark energy that hamper your progress. Soon you encounter the ghost of Angelina who begs you to help free her and others from the dark energy that has overrun the school and imprisoned its residents.
The graphics are good but not excellent because of the mistiness that was used to create the scenes. I think this is done intentionally as it does give the game an “old school” look and feel. The game only offers three basic modes of gameplay without the custom mode being included. From some of the other items that appear to be available in the game it is possible that the game was intended to be a CE release but somehow didn’t make the grade. At least on my Windows 7 system, the game did stretch to fit my wide screen monitor but I had to click the widescreen button in the options menu since the game wasn’t programmed to automatically fill the screen. The voiceovers are exceptionally good as is the entire sound package including the ambient effects and particularly the music that is based on some familiar classical ballet themes.
Your tools include a mirror that is given to you by Angelina to help you find her memories that will lead you through your investigation. The mirror will be used to dispel the dark energy fields that are found in almost every area of the game. As with other gimmicky tools in a game, we must play a matching puzzle to dispel the fields. I found it very hard to determine what symbols needed to be matched since they are hiding within those dark, smoky energy fields. My favorite tool is the journal that tells the complete story as you move through the game. I hated it when devs stopped using the journal and made all of the notes connected to video replay that I think is nothing more than a method they use as a shortcut. I am one who enjoys reading the dialog and often checking back in the journal to find helpful information. The other tool is an integrated, transporter type map.
Most of the HOS are the traditional list type but the devs used a very tiny white font which makes it very hard to read. Coupled with a list that is hard to read, the items to find are very difficult to spot with some of them being so tiny that they are often unrecognizable. There is a little trick to the HOP scenes and before I actually realized what was happening I was rather annoyed by all the dark energy sparkles that were flitting around but once I figured it out they didn’t bother me as much. You will visit each HOS more than once (I know some gamers do not like that) but the next time the scenes contain silhouettes, which in this case makes the items easier to find than reading them from the list. The silhouette scenes are the progressive interactive type where you will use one item to find another. In the interactive HOS there is a skip option when you don’t want to complete the scene. In the list type HOS you can play a match 3 type game rather than search for items and that might be easier for many who have difficulty with the list. The game has far more HOS than mini-games and then the minis seem easy. Since there is not an apparent mini-game help button, if you don’t know what to do just press the swan hint button and then the mini-game instructions will pop up for you.
Although the game is very HOS heavy it is perfect for me since I enjoy the genre and think that this is far better than some other than the major CE releases. Since I seem to accumulate so many PCCs it is terrific to find a good HOPA game so I can use them I like the fact that the game seems old school and doesn’t have a lot of hand-holding. Yes the storyline has been over-used but I like the way it is presented in Black Swan. I am a huge fan of the ballet so that gives me another reason to enjoy this game. I realize that this is not a game everyone will love and enjoy as much as I do so please try the demo to see if Black Swan is a game you will enjoy.
Laura James, a journalist with the Daily News and a member of a very secret organization, is back in Lantern of Souls an incredible new game in the New York Mysteries series. The game begins with a funeral and is followed by a very strange murder. Professor Bishop, the head of the Order, has asked for Laura’s help with investigating the scene but he leaves her with a warning to return to headquarters the minute she sees anything out of the ordinary. Well, it isn’t too long before Laura is back at headquarters and picks up a partner who returns with her to see if they can figure out what is going on at the Martell estate. I don’t want to tell you too much about the story but will only say that this is without a doubt one of the best games I have played this year. This is certainly not the standard HOPA game and it just keeps getting more interesting at every turn.
The game offers only three preset modes of gameplay with no custom mode – Easy, Normal, and Hard. The graphics are quite good but the characters do seem a bit flat and could be better and maybe a bit sharper. On the other hand, the voiceovers are excellent. This game is set in the late 1950s and poor Laura needs a new stylist and a bit of an update. The voiceovers are excellent and the sound effects are sometimes downright unnerving and creepy.
Your tools include an interactive transporter type map that shows areas with available tasks. At least through the demo I haven’t found any other special tools or gimmicks and doubt that I will as the game progresses. The New York Mysteries games are basic mystery solving games where your most important tool is your brain power, which is one of the reasons I love this series.
There are far more mini-games than there are HOPS but the HOPS that we do come across are extremely interactive and terrific. In some cases the HOPS require a lot of patience because it is not always obvious what item you need to locate from the silhouettes shown that will start the ball rolling. On the other hand, even though there are more mini-games they seem very easy. Some examples of the mini-games in the demo are as follows: rotate a dial according to present numbers to select the correct code to open the globe – easy; use symbols located on the spokes in a circle to create the symbol in the center – easy; rotate pairs of levers to match the angles – easy, create a rust remover following a diagram – easy, move a mouse through a maze to open a door – a bit tricky; and match segments of a lock – easy but fun. I am sure that there will be many more mini-games following the demo and I am sure that they will increase in difficulty as the game progresses.
Earlier I said that this is an awesome game and IT IS! The storyline grabbed me and given all of the things to do with the HOPS and mini-games I found the gameplay factor to be excellent. The other games in the New York Mysteries series are excellent and Lantern of Souls continued with that pattern of excellence and might even be better than the others. The New York Mysteries series has always been a top-notch series with terrific story lines that create wonderful games but even though I think this is a great game, please try the demo to see if this is a game you will like.
