Laura James, a journalist with the Daily News and a member of a very secret organization, is back in Lantern of Souls an incredible new game in the New York Mysteries series. The game begins with a funeral and is followed by a very strange murder. Professor Bishop, the head of the Order, has asked for Laura’s help with investigating the scene but he leaves her with a warning to return to headquarters the minute she sees anything out of the ordinary. Well, it isn’t too long before Laura is back at headquarters and picks up a partner who returns with her to see if they can figure out what is going on at the Martell estate. I don’t want to tell you too much about the story but will only say that this is without a doubt one of the best games I have played this year. This is certainly not the standard HOPA game and it just keeps getting more interesting at every turn.
The game offers only three preset modes of gameplay with no custom mode – Easy, Normal, and Hard. The graphics are quite good but the characters do seem a bit flat and could be better and maybe a bit sharper. On the other hand, the voiceovers are excellent. This game is set in the late 1950s and poor Laura needs a new stylist and a bit of an update. The voiceovers are excellent and the sound effects are sometimes downright unnerving and creepy.
Your tools include an interactive transporter type map that shows areas with available tasks. At least through the demo I haven’t found any other special tools or gimmicks and doubt that I will as the game progresses. The New York Mysteries games are basic mystery solving games where your most important tool is your brain power, which is one of the reasons I love this series.

There are far more mini-games than there are HOPS but the HOPS that we do come across are extremely interactive and terrific. In some cases the HOPS require a lot of patience because it is not always obvious what item you need to locate from the silhouettes shown that will start the ball rolling. On the other hand, even though there are more mini-games they seem very easy. Some examples of the mini-games in the demo are as follows: rotate a dial according to present numbers to select the correct code to open the globe – easy; use symbols located on the spokes in a circle to create the symbol in the center – easy; rotate pairs of levers to match the angles – easy, create a rust remover following a diagram – easy, move a mouse through a maze to open a door – a bit tricky; and match segments of a lock – easy but fun. I am sure that there will be many more mini-games following the demo and I am sure that they will increase in difficulty as the game progresses.
The Ce version of the game includes a good array of extra items to spot throughout the game. There are 16 fact cards, 35 morphing objects and 35 collectibles that will complete 4 sets. Yes there are achievements, and the other standard extras such as wallpapers, artwork, videos, music, strategy guide, and bonus chapter.
Earlier I said that this is an awesome game and IT IS! The storyline grabbed me and given all of the things to do with the HOPS and mini-games I found the gameplay factor to be excellent. The other games in the New York Mysteries series are excellent and I have no doubt that Lantern of Souls will continue with that pattern of excellence and might even be better than the others. Since this is one of my favorite game series, I didn’t have to think twice when I saw that it was being released. Even though I think this is a great game, please try the demo to see if this is a game you will like.
I recommend this game!

Sliders and Other Square Jigsaw Puzzles is a puzzle lovers delight and a terrific game that comes to us from the developer of those zany Clutterville games, most of which I have living in my personal game library. I am a huge puzzle fan and the puzzles have always been my favorite part of the Clutterville games, so what a wonderful surprise to now have the puzzles that I love in a stand-alone game.
Sliders and Other Square Jigsaw Puzzles offers over 230 puzzles with a blend of styles that include Sliders, Slider Mirrors, Square Jigsaws, Mirrored Jigsaws, Box Quotes, Box Lists, and Pixelate Puzzles. There are so many puzzles, styles and variations to keep me busy for many, many hours. The great thing about games like this is that you can play one or more puzzles whenever you have a bit of time to spare and then come back another day to play some more. One of my favorite puzzles is the Pixelate style that seems almost impossible at first glance but don’t let all of those tiny squares fool you because it is easier than it looks.
There are so many styles of puzzles in Sliders and Other Square Jigsaw Puzzles that there is sure to be something that will fit the bill for almost all gamers. If you are a huge fan of puzzles, please give this wonderful game a try. I purchased it as soon as I saw it as today’s game but I always recommend that you try the demo first to see if you will enjoy this type of puzzle game.
I recommend this game!

When Punished Talents Stolen Awards was released in the CE version I was going through a rather ho-hum stage with HOPA games and because I found the last game in the series one of the worst ever published, I didn’t take the time to write a review. A couple of weeks after the game was released I finally got around to playing it and found it to be a game that I thoroughly enjoyed.
I found the gameplay interesting and the storyline, although it was loosely based on one from a famous author, was nevertheless well done and kept the momentum in the game going as I worked to save those who were being eliminated from the field of competition for the coveted Pride of Humanity Award. To make the game a bit more exciting, you are in the midst of a huge storm that knocks out the only bridge to the old castle hotel where the competition is being held. Can you follow the clues, save those being targeted, and stop the villain in his or her path?
The HOPS are a mostly the list type but I am quite fond of that style. The items to find were for the most part quite visible but some were a bit difficult to find. There was some interaction required with a few of the items but I still enjoyed each HOP that I found in the game. The puzzles were easy and that continued throughout the game. Even though they were not overly challenging, I enjoyed solving each one.
In the end, I really enjoyed the game. No it is not one of the best games I have played but I still believe it is a decent five-star game with a great storyline and excellent gameplay. Even though I really enjoyed the game, please try the demo to see if it is a game you will enjoy.
I recommend this game!

When I reviewed the CE release of the game I was so wrong and Living Legends Bound by Wishes is a game that is one of the best I have played this year. Having a great sale and nothing new to play, I ended up purchasing the game and I am so happy that I did.
As the game begins your husband, Jack, has left on a mission to the town of Wishville with a promise to return soon. After many days when Jack has not returned you follow after him and this is where your quest begins. I must admit that the game starts out a bit slow but it certainly improves. It took me two days to finish the game as there are many objectives to be fulfilled along the journey to save Jack.
The graphics in the game are excellent and quite beautiful. I still have an issue with some of the characters being very flat in appearance but not all of them are that way.
There is an interactive map that proved to be quite useful because it directed me to take a second look at locations where I initially missed an item or a task. Periodically we have a feisty squirrel show up who will help us when properly enticed but he is not constantly present in the game.
The HOPS and mini-games are excellent and some of them require a lot of patience. The HOPS have a lot of variety and offer almost every style with most of them being quite interactive. Although the mini-games were nothing new, some of them had a higher level of difficulty and require a lot of patience to complete.
The CE version of the game does have morphing objects, collectibles, achievements, replay of HOPS and mini-games plus much more. If you like all of these sorts of extras then take a look at the CE.
In the end, I did a disservice to the game and the developers in my initial review. I often can make mistakes and this was one of them. The game ended up being terrific and had a lot of entertainment value. I love the way several of my favorite tales were combined into one to make a great storyline. I am so happy that I ended up purchasing the game and I know many of you out there initially saw what I missed. I think that had there been a little more of the wow factor during the demo of the game my opinion would have been far better. However, I hope this review will change the minds of some who originally passed up on the game because it is excellent. As always, please try the demo but keep an open mind because it becomes better as the game progresses.

As a detective you arrive at the scene of a huge fire and it is not long before you are in the middle of the action. The local asylum is burning and the firefighters are quickly losing the battle to save it as somehow the fire seems very unnatural. The firefighters are having extreme difficulty in controlling the blaze that could easily spread to the adjacent town so you jump in and help. As you gain entry to the asylum you are faced with the horror of what lies within its walls. Hopefully, you will be able to find survivors and maybe find out what is causing the devastation.
There are four modes of gameplay to select and the custom mode is included as one of your choices. In custom mode the hints and skips can be set in the range of 10 – 500 seconds. The graphics are crisp with some very creepy hand drawn artwork that is reminiscent of those in some of the MCF games. Although some scenes might be quite gorgeous, others are very dingy. The sound effects add to the creepy nature of the game and more than a few of you might find them a bit disturbing; I sure know that I did! Even though I was a bit rattled, it doesn’t mean that I didn’t think they added to the game or that I didn’t like them because they were absolutely perfect and set the entire tone of the game.

Very early in the game you will find an interactive, transporter type map that will show where you have tasks or objectives.
The HOPS in The Everburning Candle are some of the best I have ever played. I love some of the innovation that the developer has used that definitely set this game apart from others. I am not going to spend a lot of time telling you about the HOPS or the mini-games but I loved all of them. Although some of the mini-games are familiar, they have a different spin to them and are quite excellent. Some might seem a bit difficult but they just take a bit of time to figure out so they are doable without a lot of stress factor.
In the CE version of the game there are collectible marbles to be found and they are located in each scene. Of course we have those meaningless achievements (at least they don’t rock my world) but not much else aside from the standard fluff.
Although I absolutely think that this latest Whispered Secrets game is by far the best in the series, I have to say that many gamers might find it a bit disturbing. That aside, I strongly urge you to try the demo before you purchase the game. I happen to be a fan of some of the more creepy games but this one had me a bit on edge at times. That doesn’t mean that I didn’t like it because I did. It is only my humble opinion but I believe that this is probably one of the finest games we have ever had from this developer and I would love to see more like it. There are so many of the innovative gameplay features in the game that I couldn’t wait to hit the buy button and continue with the full game. . The Everburning Candle is certainly not your run of the mill so-so HOPA game. Just when I have become bored with many of the games I have played this year, we have two excellent games in the same week and I am thrilled to say the least. As I mentioned above, please try the demo of The Everburning Candle to see if this is a game you will like.
I recommend this game!

The gold standard of mosaic games is back with a new found color palette and more challenge. As much as I love the Fantasy Mosaic games I have to admit that I often wondered why the developer didn’t use a more varied color palette. Now just what I have been wanting is here and Fantasy Mosaics 14 is better than ever.
The game still offers the basic options that I love and I generally play the game in casual mode because I like the feature of having the unused squares automatically fill once I complete a certain color.
There is not much more to say than that I purchased Fantasy Mosaics 14: The Fourth Color as soon as I saw it as today’s game. I think the addition of a fourth color makes the gameplay a bit more challenging and for me that is a plus. The mosaic games just can’t get any better than the Fantasy Mosaic series and all I can say is “please keep them coming.” I own all 14 games in the series but hardly ever play any of the first four because those were all presented in one color board option but even they were still a step above the others. Yes, I am a huge fan of the Fantasy Mosaic games and they are my go to games when I am looking for something different to play when I am not immersed in a HOPA game. Kudos to the Fantasy Mosaics team – you rock!
I recommend this game!

In Vampire Legends The Count of New Orleans we follow the story of the infamous Carter Brothers who were convicted of mass murder in 1932 and executed shortly thereafter. According to the story the body count for the Carters was around 14 people but there may have been even more victims. As a journalist interested in paranormal phenomena you travel to New Orleans to find out more about the Carter Brothers and their alleged tie to vampirism; however, maybe you have stumbled into something more than you could have imagined. Follow the clues and if you are lucky you might survive your trip to New Orleans.
The game offers a custom mode of gameplay so you can click on various settings to customize the game for the way you like to play. The game to be a blend of computerized and hand drawn artwork – a style that is not my favorite as I am a huge fan of excellent hand drawn art. The game has voiceovers are excellent and much more realistic than those in some casual games – probably some of the best. I love the Count’s French accent when I finally meet him.
Your tools include an interactive map as well as a journal that keeps track of your tasks and various information that you gather during your adventure. You also have a camera and the ability to develop film in your makeshift darkroom. You can transport quickly to your darkroom from any location during the game when you need to develop the photos you have snapped.
The HOS are interactive and okay but nothing out of the ordinary from what we have come to expect in the HOPA genre of games; however, I did enjoy the variety and the interaction that was required to complete some of the scenes. The mini-games were excellent, and although none of them were frustratingly difficult, they were still excellent.

The CE version of the game includes collectible masks that are not all that easy to find. One or two jumped out at me but others were very well concealed. There is very little other CE content but the in game strategy guide is always helpful.
I am not a huge fan of vampire games but the Vampire Legends games are excellent. The game has some scary moments that even though I knew were coming still caused me to jump and that is always a bit of extra fun. Even though I enjoyed the storyline the game seemed bogged down at points with mini-games such as using a picture map to find your way through a cemetery. In the end I am still considering whether it is a game that I really like. If you like vampire inspired games then it might just be the game for you but at this point, I am not sure it is one that I have to have. As always, I recommend that you at least try the demo to see if this is a game you will like.

Yes, Aunt Gray is back and she has been called upon by her nephew, Brandon, to help find his missing son. When you arrive at Gray Castle you find Bandon’s wife in a coma and Brandon has gone ahead to search for Billy. A story of a ghostly figure emerges as you use your special ability of seeing the past to search for Billy and now Brandon. Encounter an old nemesis and search out the source of a deep evil hidden within the walls of Gray Castle. You will need your wits and nerves of steel to save your beloved nephew and his family in this great new Grim Tales game.

The game offers four levels of difficulty: Casual, Advanced, Hardcore and Custom. In the Custom mode the hints and skips can be set in a range of 15 – 90 seconds. The graphics are excellent as are the lip-synced voiceovers. The entire sound package adds to your enjoyment of searching through a spooky castle to find Brandon and Billy. There are seven chapters plus the bonus chapter and even with a very long demo we only complete chapter three. Given the amount of time it took to go through the demo, I believe the game is going to be quite long. However, I tend to gawk at everything in a game and even some of those games that seem short for others still take me a long time to complete. I hate to skip mini-games and if they present a challenge I can work at them for quite a while before moving forward.
Your tools include an interactive map that is present at the beginning of the game and a bit later you will receive an hour-glass that can be used to see the future. So not only can you use your ability to see the past, you now have a tool to see the future.
It looks like the Mammoth team has finally moved away from the traditional list style of HOPS. The game demo included a mix of hidden object styles that included matching objects, finding different colors and types of flowers, and one where we find objects by their silhouette. The silhouette style of HOS is my least favorite so I am happy to find that not all of them are that style. Another change is that I finally don’t have to open a suitcase to start the first HOS in a game. There are a lot more mini-games than there are HOP scenes, so if you are a fan of the mini-games you have hit the jackpot. While almost all of the mini-games are familiar, many of them seem to have a stepped-up difficulty level so that we do not have a game padded with super easy mini-games. The following mini-games are only a few of those that were found in the demo: rotate valves to set gauge levels, lead a zebra through a labyrinth press the buttons on a car toy in the correct order according to a clue, swap pieces to complete a picture, and many more.

This latest offering in the Gray family saga is quite a bit better than some of the more recent games in the series. Fortunately, The Heir seems to take a step back into being more like the older Grim Tales games. The story is interesting and who doesn’t like searching through a dark old castle filled with cobwebs and all sorts of creepy things. In the end, this game took me a couple of days to complete since it is packed with things to do and rooms to explore. I felt that this latest game in the Grim Tales series is what games once were - excellent and truly worth playing. Even though I love the game, please try the demo and see if it is one you will enjoy.
I recommend this game!

I was so happy today to see another Spirits of Mystery game, and this time the storyline is quite interesting. Our beloved Nanny is back and I can't imagine a Spirits of Mystery game without her and her guidance. Nanny who I swear must be older than dirt has been around to raise princesses forever. This latest Spirits of Mystery – Family Ties begins with the birth of a princess (yes that’s you). Fast forward twenty-five years and your castle is under attack when your father asks you to lock yourself into your room for protection. Well we know that won’t happen because as snoopy as we are we will find a way to leave the room and start our quest to save the family. The question is – who is your family? When Nanny tells you that you must find out the truth about your family for yourself, you might just open a bigger puzzle than you intended. As you move forward in the game you find out things about your parents that you never knew. Now your mother is to be burned for treason at midnight and dear old dad turns out to be not so nice. Will you be able to find out what terrible secret your mother has been hiding so that you can rescue her, Nanny and yourself from the hands of the executioner?
The game does offer a custom setting and I am quite happy with that option. It should come as no surprise that the graphics are excellent and the scenes are packed with the gorgeous hand drawn artwork that I love. IMHO, no dev is better at creating such realistic characters or animals in their games. The characters are drawn to perfection and their expressions are so animated that they seem to come to life in the game. Unfortunately the voiceovers are another story with the voice for dear old dad being laughable. The others are excellent so I guess I should give dad a break because he was stressed out with trying to save the castle and his family.
The game tools include an interactive map as well as a special amulet that is used to deal with some nasty, evil thorns. I don't mind that the amulet is considered by some to be a game gimmick because I like the way it is used in the game.

There are various types of interactive HOPs and in the demo there was a list type, one where you find items according to the story, and also one where we find matching pairs. Some of the mini-games are easy but this game dev often creates ones that can be difficult. IMHO, the mini-games cover the spectrum and should keep most of us happy as we solve them.
The CE version of the game does not contain a lot of extras but there are collectibles to be found. Throughout the game you will collect gems that can be used to purchase various items for your personal enhancement. The gems are everywhere and before long you will have a treasure trove so you can go on a shopping spree any time you feel the need to open the chest. Of course the game has achievements but I never seem to understand what purpose they really serve as most of them are earned simply by playing the game. I happen to love CEs because I always want the in-game strategy guide so most of the other extras really don’t matter. If you are into wallpapers and screensavers, the artwork is gorgeous and worth saving and you might enjoy that extra perk in the CE version of the game.
Even though the game starts off slowly and I wasn’t sure I liked it, it is not long before my interest ramped up and I was sucked into the story. Yes I know that Asa, Isa or whoever he is, is always stirring up trouble but it is worth playing Family Ties to see if he is truly the bad guy or maybe this time he just might be your hero. I couldn’t resist and decided that I had to have this latest Spirits of Mystery game simply because my library wouldn’t be complete without it. Not only that, I am a sucker for fairy tale games and love being a princess even if it is only in a game. Of course it should not be surprising that I believe this is truly a quality, 5-star game, and even though it does lack some of the bells and whistles in the CE version, the artwork is stunning and I think the gameplay is excellent. Yes, I had to jump in and get the game, but please try the demo to see if you will enjoy Family Ties.
I recommend this game!

You have been called to work on a case in the Sunshine State at the Broadbeach Resort. The victim is the well-known high-roller playboy Johnny Abilli, a man who from his own description has seen it all and is rather bored with life. His only thrill comes from living on the edge and even that has lost its appeal. As you gather the evidence you come up with a resort full of suspects and at the top of the list is a soon to be ex-wife who wants her share of the assets. Step back in time to circa 1950s as you solve the crime and prove once again why you are a master detective.
The game options include four modes of gameplay: Easy, Medium, Hard and Custom. In the custom mode the hints can be set to recharge anywhere from 10 to 120 seconds and the puzzle skips can be set to recharge in a range of 10 to 400 seconds. You can also turn of the HOP error click penalty. It should be no surprise that the graphics are excellent as are the voiceovers.
Your tools include an interactive map and an evidence board where you collect notes and other objects you find that will help you identify the killer.
There are various types of interactive HOPs, some are the standard list type and others are silhouette type. If you don’t want to look for items in the HOPS you have to option to play a bubble shooter type game. There is not much to say other than the game was baked using the same cookie cutter molds that are familiar from this game developer. At one time their games were unique but now they are much the same with the same recycled puzzles even though some have increased in difficulty. The puzzles are still doable without too much effort so there is something here for everyone. If you play every HOPA game released then, like me, you might have that feeling of been here and done that before; however, for all their sameness, I still love HOPA games.

The CE content is standard and there are no surprises here either. There are collectibles, morphing objects (although I haven’t spotted them), achievements, strategy guide, wallpapers, videos, etc. You either prefer the CEs or choose to wait for the SE release and that is a matter of preference.

Even though there is nothing new here, I love a good mystery and Broadbeach Cove seems to have it all. Finding evidence and sorting through the possibilities is sure to present hours of good old-fashioned sleuthing entertainment. If you happen to love every new HOPA game that comes along you probably hit that buy button as quickly as I did. Even though I love the game, please at least try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy.
