Beyond: The Fading Signal is the third game in the Beyond series and we find ourselves of on a great adventure to save planet Earth. Years ago you and your twin brother Reggie were playing in his special tree house when he vanished in a beam of light. Now you are an adult and you’ve spent years following every lead you can to find your brother. You recently received a cryptic message from Reggie that gives you hope that he is still alive and has you returning to your long abandoned home and his tree house to find the clues he left for you. You wonder what you will find there and will it really lead to Reggie?
Beyond: The Fading Signal is an excellent game and one that held my attention as I played through the well-constructed HOPS and entertaining puzzles. Some of the puzzles were easy and there were some that I have never seen before. Even though I loved the mix of styles and the themes in the HOPS, I found the Puzzles to be some of the best and, at least for me, the most difficult that I have found in recent games.
If you want a highly entertaining sci-fi game, then this might be the game you are looking for. I loved it and had to pull myself away only when real-life called. Usually I will take a day or two to play a game but not with this one. It was exciting and I felt like I was truly involved in the action as I played. I hope to see more games in the Beyond series as this one really grabbed me. As always, please try the demo to see if Beyond: The Fading Signal is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming!
Witches’ Legacy Secret Enemy is game twelve in the series. In the previous game Rise of the Ancient, Anabel sought out and awakened the Ancient One, the last of an ancient order of powerful witches who were able to defeat and hold back the dark forces that sought to enter the world. Now two years later, Anabel and the Ancient One are still fighting the monsters who invaded the world but now they face another foe as well – the Hunter’s Order that is seeking to destroy any witches who remain. Will Anabel and the Ancient One convince the Hunters to join with them so that they can save the world, or will this be the end?
If you love using gimmicks then this game might be perfect for you. There is a “Grimoire” that will allow you to learn various spells that can help you in tricky situations. Of course, in order to learn a spell you will play a mini-game and then another mini when you use that learned spell. I enjoyed those spell associated mini-games as they were creative and quite good. Overall, aside from the mini-games there are some good puzzles in the game. To me it seems like there were a lot more puzzles or mini-games than there are HOPS. Overall, the HOPS are creative even though there is very little interaction required within the scenes. Some of the HOPS are played a second time but that does not bother me at all. There is a mix of style in the HOPS but many are the traditional list type.
In the end, overlooking the minor distractions, this game is better than some of the previous games in the Witches’ Legacy series and I enjoyed it more than I thought possible. This developer has brought us some great games including the Fear for Sale and the Keeper of Antiques series. Although I enjoyed the game, please try the demo to see if Secret Enemy is one you will enjoy as well. Happy gaming!
It’s been a while since Dr. Sylvia Burns (you) saved a dying world in Tree of Life. You have become restless in the years since your last adventure and now even your students have begun to laugh at your theories of portals to other worlds. Where is your proof that these portals and other worlds exist? It seems that one of your students, Jonathan Ferguson, did believe in you and now he has gone missing while trying to prove your theories. Jonathan’s father arrives at your home with a package that contains proof of Jonathan’s discovery and he believes that you are now the only one who can find his missing son. And so begins our new journey to The Living Mountain. Will you be able to return Jonathan to his father and find tangible proof that the portals do indeed exist?
In recent years the developer of this game has emerged as one of the top casual game developers on the scene, and each game they bring us is top quality. The developer continues to surprise us by always adding something new and innovative to each game.
The Living Mountain has incredible graphics and, IMHO, they are so much better than the graphics in Tree of Life and we have a crisp clarity to the graphics rather than the graininess that existed in the previous game. The artwork is stunning and the art team has created realistic characters that seem to come alive on the screen. The sound package only adds more realism to the game and makes playing the game truly enjoyable. Combine the sound package with this visually stunning game and we have the total experience – a place where we can be immersed for many hours in a new world. Needless to say, only fifteen minutes into the demo and I was hooked. No need to wait for a weekend sale on this one.
You have the standard tools that we find in most HOPA games such as a journal and an interactive map that you find very early in the game.
There are varying types of HOPs in The Living Mountain including the standard list type. One of the things I liked a lot was the interesting twist on the silhouette type HOPs – again something new from the developer. If you have difficulty finding objects, or if you would rather not bother looking for items in the HOP, you have the option to switch to a “bubble-shoot” type game.
Overall, I was blown away by The Living Mountain and decided that it was just too good to wait around for a weekend sale. I purchased the game after playing the demo for only a short while since that was enough to convince me that this is probably one of the best games to come our way in recent months. In the end I am happy I followed my instinct because I enjoyed every minute of this game and I highly recommend it to anyone who would like and excellent game. As always, I recommend that you try the demo to see if this is a game you will like. Happy gaming!
Eve Glover is back and this time she has been called to explore an excavation site in the Montana Foothills that had been shut down twenty years earlier due to an earthquake that made the site unstable and unsafe for further investigation. Now that the site has been deemed safe the University has requested that Eve, a renowned archaeologist, continues the excavation to see what she can find. Well, I guess it should be no surprise that what Eve finds is even more than she imagined and will take on a journey into this latest game in the Amaranthine Voyage series, the Burning Sky.
Graphics are excellent and for the most part very colorful. The game offers four modes of gameplay to select when setting up the game – Hatchling, Fledgling, Mature, and Diverse (Custom). Hints 10 – 120 Seconds and skips: 10 - 400 seconds. Tools include a map and an Ancient Artifact
HOPS were usual but I am noticing that the items in the scenes are becoming much more indistinct and difficult to find. This could be due to an effort to make the games more difficult but the danger is that it is making the HOPS frustrating and tedious. It would be nice to see a blend that will keep those who want more challenging HOPA games happy as well as satisfying those who play for relaxation and enjoyment. I know it can be a fine line to walk but people like me might stop buying games HOPA games when items are too difficult to find. I’m not saying every item has to be jump-in-your face easy to find but there has to be a realistic blend. If you don’t want to search for items or find them too difficult to spot then there is an alternate bubble-popper game available.
There is a good blend of puzzles with some being more challenging. There are some puzzles that are creative and different from those we see consistently from this developer and I applaud their efforts to keep most of us happy – particularly those of us who play virtually every HOPA game to come our way. There is an idol placement puzzle early in the game that had me scratching my head because I simply couldn’t figure it out. When I get the full game I will take my time and work through it until I get it. I really like that particular puzzle and believe there will be others ahead.
There are some things I enjoy about this game but the storyline was a bit confusing. Even though the demo ends on a cliff hanger, I didn’t care for the way it ended. Amaranthine Voyage has not been a favorite series but I did enjoy the last game – Winter Neverending. Even though the storyline initially seemed confusing, I love the concept of a once technologically advanced culture now living in a prehistoric sort of existence. Because there are some interesting puzzles and because I want to see how this storyline plays out I am happy that I purchased the full game because the demo doesn’t really tell the whole story. As always, I recommend you try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming.
What would you do if your beloved husband was suffering from a mysterious paranormal disturbance? I am sure you would do what Renee did and send him to the Alps where a physician renowned for curing these types of disturbances has a clinic. Maybe that was a mistake because Renee soon receives a letter from Alfred telling her that their marriage is over. Since Alfred didn’t sound like himself, Renee enlists your aid to get to the bottom of the mystery. You immediately recognize the name of Professor Swens and know that he works for the Seekers Brotherhood, an organization you have done battle with in the past. Could it be that you are in over your head this time. Fortunately, not is all that it seems and you do have some help. Will you be able to survive the mind invasion and Dr. Swen’s attempts to turn you into a member of the Seekers?
The graphics are good but not as crisp as I like. They seem a bit old style in comparison with those in some of the more recent games that have been released. That being said they are still nice but a bit washed out. The sound package is okay but again there is nothing outstanding.
You have a diary that keeps the progress of the story as you move through the game and there is also a transporter style map that is located close to your hint button.
Where “Mind Invasion” becomes an excellent game is with the variety in the HOS. Rather than all being the standard list type they are varied, and some are almost like puzzles. I found that I really liked the variation in the HOS and found them fun to get through to earn my reward. The same with the game’s puzzles, many of them were different than what we normally see. Some puzzles did present a bit of challenge but I didn’t find them so difficult that they were frustrating.
“Agency of Anomalies Mind Invasion’ is a unique and very interesting game because of the puzzles and the HOS. I found the story intriguing. “Mind Invasion” is a game I want to continue playing so I am off to hit the buy button. The developers have created a game that is interesting, challenging and a lot of fun. As always, I recommend that you at least try the demo to see if you agree that this is a great game and one well-worth adding to your collection. Happy gaming!
Grab your hot air balloon and travel to Polynesia for this 15th game in the Myths series. As a gift from your parents for completing your studies, you are off on the adventure of a lifetime visiting the Polynesian islands. As your balloon unexpectedly crashes you find yourself in shark infested waters and only help from a young girl on an island guides you to safety.
In an effort to make the game more attractive to younger gamers, history has been thrown out the window and we are left with the EIPIX vision of how to make it work for a game. Granted in order to keep it user friendly the island population is not running mostly unclothed, and the princess or other young maidens are not being thrown into the fiery volcano to quell the rising beast. Unless the date of 1790 at the beginning of the game is wrong, I doubt that a box of matches would be traveling with our young adventurer. In spite of the anachronisms I still found the game to be an improvement over some others in the series but Of Fiends and Fairies and The Heart of Desolation are still my favorites.
The HOPS are the basic style we see in all HOPA games and you either love or hate them. As for me I did find them enjoyable even though there was nothing new or exciting. I am a HO lover and it never seems to get old even though I own 1,300 games. In Fire from the Deep, I happen to enjoy the beautiful graphics and finding the items even though some might not be too-hidden. The beauty of the colorful graphics (rather than hunting through dark and dingy scenes) is what makes the HOPS much more enjoyable for me. Congrats to EIPIX for stepping up and making some HOS that many of us will love! The PUZZLES or mini-games seem to be an improvement as well with some of them being a bit more difficult for me.
As I mentioned Of Fiends and Fairies and the Heart of Desolation are my two favorite games in the Myths series but Fire from the Deep is much better than some of the more recent offerings from this developer. Although this game has nothing to do with the true history or Myths concerning the Polynesian culture it is still a fun and entertaining game to play. If you can put aside your need for accuracy in a game and enjoy it for the entertainment value, then this is a game you will hopefully enjoy as much as I did. As always, please try the demo to see if this game is a keeper for you. Happy gaming!
I love mosaic type games and play at least a couple of boards a day. I was happy to see Travel Mosaics 3: Tokyo arrive on the scene as the Travel Mosaic games are some of the better games in this genre. The Travel Mosaics offer features that I love such as the ability to select your tile set, and the difficulty level. I happen to play most games in a relaxed mode.
The mechanics of the game are what we usually find in other Travel Mosaic games and I appreciate earning coins that can be used to upgrade some power-ups. I generally use the hammer and the sun power-ups most frequently when I am stuck and need a nudge in the right direction.
Travel Mosaics 3: Tokyo is definitely a game that I will add to my collection. With the different levels plus bonus levels it is sure to be a game that I will play often. Thanks to the dev for creating this wonderful series.
In recent months I have been trying to branch out and play other types of games. I do happen to enjoy good match 3 games and, believe me there are some great ones here at BFG. To mention just a few – Runefall, Silver Tale, and the recent Storm Tale are some that I happen to love. Even giving this game a fair chance, I couldn’t bring myself to love Magica Travel Agency: Las Vegas
The good thing about this game is that the graphics are colorful and cute. However the bad things seem to outweigh the good. I dislike a game where there is no option to turn off the tutorial. I’ve played so many Match-3 games that I “get it” and don’t need the tutorial. What else is bad, no option for playing without the limited moves. For the most part the game is easy and I can get to the goal within the move limit. That being said, although the game is rather quirky, it really isn’t for me as it seems very easy. So although Magica Travel Agency: Las Vegas isn’t my cup of tea, please try the demo as it might be perfect for you. Happy gaming!
Every once in a while a TM game comes along that I love and Incredible Dracula Vargosi Returns is one of them. Although TM games are not my favorite genre, they have evolved and many offer a relaxed mode of play without a timer. When I found the first Incredible Dracula game – Chasing Love – my curiosity was tickled and that began my love affair with Incredible Dracula. I have every game in the series and think that Vargosi Returns is excellent. I like the fact that I don’t have to buy the CE or wait several weeks until the SE comes along.
Since I am not an expert in playing TM games I am so thankful for the Free Mode where I can play the game without being stressed over accomplishing the goals in a timely manner. The graphics in this game are simply excellent and crisp – a good thing because the scenes are quite busy with things to do and sometimes it is difficult for me to find my way. I was a bit disappointed that my pal Dracula wasn’t in the game at first but I was happy that he did finally show up. That being said, it is so much fun seeing the other characters in the game such as Frankenstein.
This series is wonderful to play particularly at this time of year as we approach Halloween but I have often played the games at other times particularly when I need a break from playing HOPA games. This series brings something new to the table and it is so much fun to play Incredible Dracula with all of its humor. I love Vargosi Returns and think it might turn out to be one of my favorite games in the series.
If you have never played TM games and would like to dip your toe into the genre, I highly recommend trying the Incredible Dracula series. Even though I love this game, as always please try the demo to see if you will enjoy Vargosi returns or others in the series as well. Happy gaming!
Honored Healer, grab your new and improved diagnostic kit and face off with Gromoss whose petrified body was brought to the royal palace at the command of the Empress Patricia Tar-Liss. Gromoss who is a powerful demon has only one goal in mind and that is to obliterate the human race. After Gromoss is freed from his prison the Empress realizes that her actions were foolish and that she should have listened to Dr. Klein, the head of the Medico Imperium. Fortunately, you are immune to the dark magic that Gromoss wields and you must find a way to stop him and put an end to his diabolical plans.
I find myself asking if this series will ever end because I am so tired of the graphics that are drenched in dark blue and purple. If this series continues I hope the developer considers changing the color palette and bringing more light into the darkness of the series.
On the good side is that there are some very creative HOPs and those alone make the game worth playing or, at least getting through the demo. There is a good variety in the full HOPS and then there are those mini scenes where you need to find only a few items to proceed. Of course if you don’t want to bother with the HOPS then you can switch to a matching 3 type game.
Another great thing from this developer is that they offer a either an easy or a hard setting for most of their puzzles. There are more puzzles than HOPs in the game, another result of gamers clamoring for more puzzles. At least for me, although I love the puzzles I do prefer HOPS which are what got me involved with the genre eons ago.
A signature of this series is that playing as the Honored Healer for the Medico Impirium you will have a healer’s kit that will allow you to concoct cures for your patients. Something new in this game is that you now have a fancy scepter that does the diagnostic for you but you still have the fun of mixing the medicine to heal your patient.
Even though I am not overly fond of the color palette used in the game, I still love this series and did manage to ignore those intense, dark colors in most scenes. The gameplay is excellent since I happen to love mixing potions and playing doctor. The storyline in many respects is the same as in other games in the series but in the past several years, this is the case with most of the games we are offered here at BFG – endless series with replace the characters and tweak the storyline and voila you have another cookie cutter game. That being said, I still happen to love HOPA games and even though Fiend of Darkness isn’t a stellar game, the developer creates excellent HOPS and Puzzles for my entertainment. Even though I think this is a very good game, as always please try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming!
