To be truthful, I lost interest in the Phantasmat series long ago and didn’t even purchase the last game – one of the few that I haven’t since the CE version of games was introduced. With this being the third Phantasmat game released this year I didn’t hold out hope that this would be a good game but what a surprise when I played the demo and found Phantasmat Death in Hardcover to be an excellent game.
There is no need for me to recap the storyline, which by the way, I found to be excellent and thrilling. It was a storyline that held my interest from the very first scene as I tried to find out why this madman was targeting me and putting my family at risk.
What made Phantasmat Death in Hardcover such a great game? Aside from the well told storyline, what really grabbed me were the very creative HOP scenes. Those scenes were excellent and sometimes challenging with one of them having me a bit confused until I figured it out. The puzzles are terrific and some seemed quite challenging at least for me.
Although I am not a fan of the thriller theme in HOPA games, Death by Hardcover gripped me from the very beginning. As I played there were times I was on the edge of my chair but I still couldn’t stop playing since I had to see how this all ended and if Marcia would be able to rescue her family. This game is fairly intense and one that might not be appropriate for all members of the family. For once, all those warnings that we see in games, really is true. If you are able to handle an intense psychological thriller, then you will most likely love this game. Many gamers, I am sure will agree that this is the game we have been waiting to see: a game that is designed for adults and one that elicits a range of emotions while playing. EIPIX did an amazing job with this Phantasmat that, IMHO, would definitely qualify as a candidate for game of the year. Congratulations on an excellent game! Even though I really found this to be an incredible game, PLEASE try the demo to see if Phantasmat Death in Hardcover is a game you will enjoy.

Rescue Team 8 is here and I know that when a Rescue Team game is released it means there is a lot of fun headed my way. I am certainly not an expert at TM games as they are not my usual go-to ones to play but that being said, in the past few years I have dipped my toes into the TM genre. There is a one series that I love to play at Halloween and it is the one that really started my interest in playing TM games. Since then I've found a few other series I enjoy in the genre but Rescue Team is right at the top of my list.
In Rescue Team 8 Pietro Mangula, a famous poacher, has stolen all of the animals and destroyed the reserve. Now you and your Rescue Team friends must go to work to save the animals, rescue people, and rebuild the reserve. Wow, even I could play this game and have had so much fun this morning doing it that it will be hard to pull myself away for those real-life tasks that need to be done.
If you are new to the TM genre and want a game that can be played in a relaxed mode as you learn how to play, then Rescue Team 8 is a game I think will fit the bill as you find out how much fun a TM game can be. Every time a new Rescue Team game is released I am right on it and know it is a game that will be a lot of fun. Not only will you need to rescue and restore as you play, you will also need to figure out the best strategy for accomplishing your goals. Although I play the game in the relaxed mode the first time through, the next time I am a bit braver and will select a different option for playing the game but no matter which option I select, I still have fun playing without the stress that I find in some TM games.
Rescue Team 8 is an excellent game and one I love but, as always, please try the demo to see if you will enjoy. Happy gaming!
I recommend this game!

The next chapter in the Dark Tales series is here and I must admit I am a bit surprised at how much I have enjoyed the game considering how uninspired the past games in the series have been. In Dark Tales the Oval Portrait you and Dupin receive a letter from Mary who is set to pose for the celebrated artist Leonard Tussole. The problem is that Mary is frightened since other young women who have posed for the artist have disappeared, and after Mary received a letter telling her that the portrait will devour her soul. Even the police now suspect Tussole is behind the disappearances.
I love this developer because no one can beat the beautiful and realistic characters they create in their games. I only wish they would stop fiddling with Dupin’s appearance. I know that after thirteen games he should age a bit but he no looks rather “rough around the edges” and worn out. Perhaps that is why he stands around looking a bit lost as he directs you to do all of the work – lol. That being said, I still think that the Oval Portrait is a very good game and I’ve enjoyed playing although it did seem a bit short. Even with being a rather slow player, particularly since I have to gawk at every little detail in each scene, I still finished the game in only a few hours. I found the gameplay engaging that I was disappointed when it ended in such a short time. However, the past few Dark Tales from the AMAX team seem to be very short.
There are a lot of HOPS in the game but many of those are the mini HOPS that now seem to be springing up in all recent games. The HOPS include the usual variety of styles with silhouette, and the storybook to mention a few. Some of the scenes were creative and a lot of fun. The Puzzles seem to be the same as those we see in other games in the series but some of them were a bit more challenging.
The CE version of the game includes Collectible Statues to collect, and morphing objects to find. There are achievements to earn and the other standard extras such as Wallpapers, Concept Artwork, Screen Savers, Music, and a replay of some HOPS and Mini-games. Also included is the in-game Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter.

Although the Oval Portrait seems to be much the same cookie cutter game as the last games in the series, I still found it to be a very good game and one I enjoyed playing. You can’t beat the graphics but many of the scenes seemed to be recycled from other games in the series. However, if you love the Dark Tales series I and this developer, I recommend that you try the demo to see if the Oval Portrait is a game you will enjoy as well. Happy gaming!
I recommend this game!

The game is based on the jack and the beanstalk tale. You play the game as Jackie Grant whose brother Edward is a very successful young botanist who has recently made an incredible discovery and he wants to share it with you. Edwards’s letter asks you to meet him in the town of Etherfall but when you arrive you are greeted with a disastrous scene and Edward is missing. As you begin your search for Edward and you meet Grace, you find that Edward by his discovery has unleashed a terrible fate for the Etherfall unless you can intervene. Off you go on a search not only for Edward but one for something more precious that just might save the town and its residents.
I love “The Fallen Sky” and if you are familiar with my reviews you might know that the Living Legends series is a favorite of mine. For me the Fallen Sky does not disappoint and I have had a long night of playing the game since it was released. As a child I loved my huge book of fairy tales and the story of Jack and the Beanstalk was one I loved. I guess I developed my love of fairy tales as my grandmother would always read one for me each night until I learned to read and then we would read them together. Now with the advent of computer games and some of the adaptations of those beloved stores that we receive here at BFG I can relive some of my fondest memories from childhood. The Fallen Sky is a game that can be shared by the family and one that will become a favorite as they play this retelling of the Jack and the Beanstalk tale.
The game offers four game settings to choose from when you begin. Since I don’t like a lot of help along the way I appreciate being able to turn off sparkles and helpful text. There is a helper in the game that lives right on the right side of your inventory area and he will help you in certain situations. Of course, you will need to play a puzzle each time he is used but it is fun and not difficult.
The HOPS are so much fun and my favorite is found early in the game as I searched for items in a baby hedgehog. In general the HOPS are familiar and nothing new but they are so creative and well-designed that they were, for me at least, some of the best things in the game. Yes, I love puzzles and I found the ones in the Fallen Sky easy but very entertaining. Sometimes I skip puzzles when I play a game for the first time but I didn’t want to skip any in this game because they were fun to solve and fit well into the game’s storyline. Although many of the puzzles were easy there were several that I found a bit more challenging.
The CE has morphing objects and collectible cats to find. I appreciate the slide out tab on the screen that lets me know how many cats or morphs are located in each scene and if I have found them. Some of the cats were easy to find but I had trouble finding quite a few as they didn’t jump out at me. This mechanism keeps me on task since I tend to be a bit obsessed with finding each collectible and morph in a game, which is one reason I enjoy the CE version. The remaining extra content is fairly standard but the developer has included the extra feature of replaying HOPS and Puzzles. Aside from the Wallpapers and other goodies there is the helpful in-game Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter.
Living Legends: The Fallen Sky is a game that I highly recommend if you love a new spin on a favored fairy tale or if you happen to enjoy a well-crafted game. I found the game to be entertaining, at time humorous, and sometimes challenging. I enjoy a game that holds my attention and keeps me involved in the storyline as I play and the Fallen Sky fit the bill for me as I tried to find Edward and save the residents of Etherfall. Even though the Fallen Sky is the perfect game for me and the way I like to play but, as always, please try the demo to see if it is one you will enjoy as well. Happy gaming!

Although Angkor: Runefall seemed to hold a lot of promise as a fun match 3 game, I found a lot of the sound effects to be unnecessary and rather annoying. I enjoy a match 3 game where I can use my earned resources to repair a building or a village in this case but there were several things about the game aside from the sound that I didn’t like.
By now you get that the sound in the game is bothersome but other things I did not like were a tutorial that could not be turned off and then the box that hovered over power-ups telling you to use them each time a board began. There were no options aside from turning off the music or sound effects.
It could be fun to rebuild Runefall but with nothing to do but play a small match 3 board within a designated number of moves, I quickly found the game to be boring. Even though this is not a game that I like, please try the demo to see for yourself if it might be one you will enjoy. Happy gaming!
I don't recommend this game.

Dr. Burns is back and in this Amaranthine Voyage she is with an archaeological group that gets into trouble at an excavation site. You play the game as Dr. Burns who opens a portal to Anther, a world that has been plagued by a mysterious force called Torment. Anther is an idyllic world where everyone lived in harmony until Torment unleashed a devastating blight upon the world. You soon learn of the prophecy that someone of pure heart will come to save Anther – perhaps it is you!

The graphics are excellent and colorful, although in some scenes they appear a bit muted and not as vibrant as I like. The sound package for Amaranthine Voyage is probably one of the best I’ve heard in recent games, of course with this developer; most of their sound packages are top-notch. I found the voiceovers to be very realistic and they enhanced the visual characters which were extremely well depicted.
Early in the game we will find a map that is set up a bit differently than those normally found. There is a pocket on the right side of the map with pull out cards that contain information on the current objective. The map itself is the interactive transporter type that I like since it is often one of my most helpful tools. Although there isn’t a journal, I don’t think one is necessary since the objective cards in the map’s pocket seem to provide most of the information needed. Another tool that we acquire early in the game is an orb that requires shards to activate it. As a shard is inserted into the orb there is a mini-puzzle to complete to activate it. The hint is helpful in that it will transport us to the area where something is to be done.
The HOPs are interactive and multi-level, which is standard for EIPIX. For the most part the items are not too difficult to find but sometimes the riddle at the end made no sense and I admit to using the hint. If you would rather not complete the HO scenes, you have the option of switching to a bubble-shooter game but once the items are found you still must answer the riddle to progress. The puzzles are interesting and I even encountered one that was different from what we normally find. Although most of the puzzles were fairly easy which is becoming typical in most games now, I still enjoyed them and even a few were a bit challenging.
Amaranthine Voyage the Shadow of Torment is, IMHO, better that the others in the series and promises to be a bit more exciting in the long run. When the demo ended I was left wanting more and couldn’t wait to hit that buy button. As always, I recommend that you at least try the demo to see if this is a game you will like.

Amaranthine Voyage: The Obsidian Book is the fourth game in the series. In the Obsidian Book you have been called upon to find missing professor Samantha Bennett, a physicist who has been investigating Harmonium. Dr. Bennett and her team have not been heard from recently and it is feared that something has happened to her. Off you go to Iceland to see if you can locate Dr. Bennett. As you are about to reach her camp settlement, a helicopter flying over your location causes an avalanche so now you must find a different way to the encampment.
I have all of the other games in the series and was slightly disappointed when this one didn’t seem to be quite as good. I was very involved in the demo but it seemed to end quickly and of course with a cliffhanger I needed to purchase the game to find out the rest of the story. Did I like the game? The answer is yes and it turned out to be much better than I thought. What I really enjoyed was the bit of sci-fi where we go through a portal to another world as we follow our leads.
The graphics in the game are absolutely excellent and at times colorful. Hey, the beginning of the game is snow and ice so it was nice to find that “other world”. The game has the usual four modes of gameplay with the custom being the newest mode to be offered. I like fiddling with the various options particularly since I can turn off the tutorial and the sparkles. I like to take my time and figure out what to do next and any glints seem to make the game too easy.
The HOPS are very enjoyable and well-designed. There is a variety of style as well but if you don’t want to look for items then you can switch to an alternate Bubble-Popper game. Even though the HOPS are very entertaining, the puzzles are even better. Even though most of the puzzles are fairly easy, I still found them fun to solve.
Since I love HOPA games and the genre, I am not hard to please when it comes to the individual games. For me a great storyline and fun gameplay are what I look forward to the most. I found the Obsidian Book to be a perfect game for me and the way I like to play but, as always, please try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming!

Detective Solitaire: Inspector Magic And The Man Without A Face is another of the one up/one down solitaire games that we always see here at BFG. Since I enjoy playing a quick game of solitaire when it is time to take a break, this game fits the bill.
The graphics are quite nice and we do have an option to change some of the themes. Although I do know how to play this type of game, I can appreciate a bit of information on the various options that are included in the tutorial. That being said, there doesn’t appear to be a way to turn the tutorial off at the beginning of the game. As you play the game you will earn coins that will allow you to purchase some power-ups such as a Joker, Undo your last move, and a Shuffle. You earn coins by placing cards on the pile and the more cards you place the more coins you earn. You also earn a much larger amount of coins by using the designated gold cards. Once you have placed all of the gold cards, you win the game and earn a perfect score.
I’m not going to go into all the details but will only say that I did enjoy the game but as always, please try the demo to see if it is one you will enjoy as well. Happy gaming!
