The opening scenes were great --totally scary and full of surprises... debatably one of the best openings I've seen in a HOG. The cut scenes were awesome. I started getting into the story. I had to find three soul stones to get out of the cemetery.
I was deep into the game before it all started to change for me. About three fourths in, the game seemed to stall a little bit. I found myself hunting for one item at a time, back and forth. Then I came to the ending, and...there wasn't one.
If the entire game delivered on the promise that the beginning made, it would have been something special. I could be wrong. The lack of ending may have given me an attitude. Maybe the collector's edition is different.
After playing for about an hour, I decided that this game was too easy and too "cute" and that maybe I should try a different one...but that didn't happen. Before I knew it, half the day had gone by.
I didn't care much for the hint system --I kept accidentally clicking on the annoying ringing phone by mistake. I thought the map was great though. It was complete and even listed tasks that needed to be done for each scene. Instead of a HOS, the player placed objects in the correct spots in a scene, which was a no brainer but kind of fun. I loved how all the animals/creatures were drawn.
The entire time playing, I kept thinking how my nieces would love this game. I'm still not sure why I liked this game so much. But I played to the end, and I enjoyed it.
This is my second Dark Tales so far, and I must admit that I'm quickly becoming a huge fan of the series. I realize that these games aren't supposed to be an accurate representation of Poe. They're designed to be...well. games.
Keeping that in mind, I believe that the devs did a pretty good job of trying to maintain the essence of the story. This game has an older feel to it, which I think is appropriate. There's no map, or strategy guide, or hint system outside of HO scenes. But instead of taking away from the game, not having all the bells and whistles seemed to add to the overall experience. I didn't use a walk-through until around chapter five, and I only referred to it a couple of time after that point.
I couldn't decide whether I wanted to give this game four or five stars the entire time while playing it. I really enjoyed it. The mini-games were fun and the ones that weren't could be skipped. The player collects roses throughout the game, giving it more of a CE edge, even though it's an SE. Even the ending was complete and climactic. I'm really looking forward to playing the next one in the series
I'm a huge fan of the Surface games because the folks that make these games have a lot of imagination. As usual, the plot is creative and fun. The HOGs are simple, and, for the most part, so are the mini-games. I usually don't like a game that's too easy, but in this case, the game flowed so well, and the story was so intriguing that when I first started to play, a couple of hours had gone by before I even noticed. I loved how the HOS were integrated with the game play. I purchased this game without trying the demo first. I didn't need to. This game is good.

Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles
Charles Baskerville is the latest victim of a centuries-old curse! Help Holmes break the curse before the next murder occurs!
This is an older game, but still a good one imo. I didn't think I'd like it as much after playing it again over a year later, but I really enjoyed this game --again. It has an interactive map, and it's well done. The HOS and mini-games aren't too difficult, and they're still original. If you're playing for casual entertainment, I recommend this game. The lighting is a little dark at times, and the visuals aren't the best, but the game flows well. Besides, who doesn't like Sherlock Holmes?
"The developer" did it again! This last game brings them all together. This trilogy is destined to be a classic. "What a fun, strange trip it's been." Loved the music too. Congratulations! (This review was denied for mentioning the dev's name --hope this is better :))
This game seemed easier than the first one. The game play was very smooth, scenes loaded quickly, and the graphics were stunning as always. The mini-games were fun and original. Towards the end, I found myself rushing thru the map, and finally meeting Gabriel was a bit of a let down. Nevertheless, this game started out great and ran strong all the way. Nice Job!
This was my first Dark Tales, and not having read the original story, I expected this game to be darker and scarier, but I wasn't disappointed as the story progressed. There was a good mix of different games, including silhouettes, which I really liked. The HO scenes sometimes were a little grainy, but they weren't hard. The music nonchalantly added dimension to the game, and at times sounded Italian. The mini-games weren't too challenging, but they were fun, and I actually did them all. The Newfoundland dog helping out was a nice touch. I really enjoyed this game and I'm looking forward to playing the next one in the series--even if it may not be exactly true to the story.
I love a game that has originality and creativity, and this game has both. The mini-games were pretty simple, but I enjoyed them. I loved being able to customize the game play. As expected, the visuals were superb. The cut scenes flowed beautifully with the game play. I purchased this game for the story and adventure. I wasn't disappointed.
The map system is complete with all the bells and whistles, such as teleporting and hints. The game play can be as easy or difficult as you like. The tasks and actions are logical. (Except that I would never have guessed to cut a manhole cover with a circular saw instead of using the crowbar I had earlier.) Little elf is cute and the dog shop is an added plus. Throw in the cool morphing animals, and the splendid graphics and awesome cut scenes and....well...I can't think of anything bad to say about this game. Well done! I loved it!
