EXCELLENT: Story Puzzles, easy to challenging but all doable with thought Music adds excitement Voice overs are great
GOOD: Map shows you where you are and where you need to go Graphics Lots of places to go Interactive characters Pace of game is pretty quick Longish game Didn't see any pentagrams Map keeps backtracking manageable
OKAY HOS are nice but are repeated and ask for the same items on occasion Ending is a bit sudden, but its good
SO-SO Map is not a jump map Some items in the HOS are small or visually blend with surroundings making them difficult (not impossible) to find For those with blood phobias, some blood and organs Demon and demonology references
OVERALL IMPRESSION Lots of fun, some thinking involved, pretty good story, suitable for all levels of adult players.
At this point in time, I expect a new game to have gorgeous graphics, voice overs and fast loading times. I didn't last more than 3 minutes with this game. It took over 15 seconds (black screen no less) to load the pages. When they did load, there were no voice overs, just pages of comic book style drawings and text. Come on!!! Really? No thanks. I uninstalled asap.
It should have been a tremendous achievement, but the tunnel through the Ridge of Leviathan became the site of a great disaster. What really happened that day?
BASED ON DEMO IN HARDCORE MODE WITH INTENTION TO BUY
Wow! I downloaded the demo with the full intention to buy this game based on the reviews. I couldn't believe how poorly made this game is. The first thing that struck me is that the voice over and the written dialogue are running at two different times. The voice over is way behind the dialogue. The graphics are ok if you like RED. It's as if the devs wanted to use up their left over red crayons. I found the scenes visually garish, red, orange....anything bright the devs could come up with. The music at times disappears leaving you with just the HOS and silence which didn't add to the story at all. In fact, I found this story to be the same old same old and became bored within a few minutes. There is nothing original here....at least not for me. The puzzles that I played were ridiculously easy and also boring. I usually like trying to save children, but this game didn't give me a reason to care about Melanie or Robert. I kept thinking..."this woman waited a YEAR to go find her child? I would have moved heaven and hel to find my daughter..." Perhaps I wouldn't have been so annoyed by the lack of talent in this game if I hadn't been expecting a 5 star game. Compare this to Rite of Passage: Child of the Forest and then we can talk.....I'm sorry. I really wanted to like this game. Instead, I was so bored I had to get some iced tea just to stay awake. If you're an expert gamer, I don't see how this game will interest you.
Pros: Red, orange and yellow hues Easy puzzles Easy to follow story line Easy HOS Good beginner game
Cons: Red, orange and yellow hues used excessively Easy puzzles Voice overs not matched to dialogue boxes Same old story Boring x infinity + 1
BASED ON COMPLETED GAME ON ADVANCED MODE W/O HINTS
WISH I COULD GIVE 4.5
THE GOOD STUFF: New twist on good vs evil story that will hold your interest Smart games, some I've never played before New twist on finding objects (you have to find their pieces too) Game advances logically, quickly and neatly "Chapters" of doors which you need to unlock (cool!) Collect coins to "earn" hints Boxes at top tell you what you have left to do in each scene Music and voice overs are nicely done Nothing too gory, dark or scary Each door/chapter takes you to a very interesting place Items are easy to find with a few sly ones to give you a challenge Items are used in sensible timely manner You know when you're finished with a chapter because of the boxes at the top (I love this feature) Enough twists and turns to keep all levels of players happy Very little backtracking......a huge plus in my book! Fairly long Leaves the door open for sequel (yes!)
MY TINY COMPLAINTS: The voice overs kind of stopped in the middle of the game Graphics could be cleaner and "humans" more realistic Game could have been more challenging One scene indicates that you have one more task to do, but you don't (cow scene)
Pros: Intriguing story Lots to do Many interesting places and scenes Puzzles are all levels, simple to a little challenging Music adds to the mood Story clearly separated into manageable "chapters" Logical use of items Moderate back tracking Clear graphics, easy to find objects Adventure moves quickly so you're never bored Map (limited in hardcore) Voice overs are adequate Characters engage frequently with you Each chapter has a different feel and place Some puzzles are very unique Relatively long game
Cons: Contains scene of child torturing her pets Contains scene of doll that chops heads off of puppets Contains scene of chopping block with bloody pet animal parts Part of story contains child who enjoys mistreating her animals Pretty standard story, nothing new (other than above) Graphics could have been crisper Ending is abrupt, somewhat confusing and unsatisfying
My first disappointment with this game was when the screen froze after I put in my name. I had to restart my computer before anything would move. Then I began to play on hard mode and noticed a lot of sentencing errors such as words stuck together without spaces between them, characters saying things that weren't in the dialogue box or not saying what was in the dialogue box. Many times I would try to apply an item to an object to have it rejected when I knew it was the correct item. I would often have to try over and over to get the game to respond. Then I found the woman in the garden, the main character, and in the middle of her voice over HER VOICE OVER DISAPPEARED. I tapped my headphones but no...it wasn't them because I could still hear the music playing. Her voice just vaporized but her character's lips kept moving (good for a giggle.) That's when I quit the game. I've beta tested many games over the years and none were this bad. This game needed to be tweaked before being released imo. It's a shame because the graphics, music and games are pretty decent, but for me, the glaring lack of professionalism in the play of this game ruined it. I'm just glad I didn't buy it at full price or I would be fuming about it.
Bottom line: save your money, this has too many glitches and errors.
This game is as good as any other "good vs evil" game but it's nothing special. In fact, to me, it has a few annoyances that prevented me from enjoying the game. One of the main characters has a skeletal deformity and is referred to by a name which I was censored from using. I wish that someone would tell the developers that using such antiquated, demeaning terms for real life deformities is not acceptable. I am sick and tired of these degrading contrivances and I consider it to be the last prejudice which needs to be obliterated from gaming. People have disabilities and their challenges are not funny or gruesome. Nor should their negative stereotypes be used as entertainment. That said, I'd also like to say I'm tired of seeing pentagrams everywhere in these games. I understand that the developers are trying to give us an exciting good vs evil adventure but pentagrams are as offensive to some of us as other symbols are to others. There is a strong religious theme to this game as it incorporates heaven, purgatory and other dogma. You are now warned. As far as judging the game for it's merits as "just a game," it's a fun game. It's easy. The story is the same old thing regarding good vs. evil. The graphics and movement of the story are very well done. The puzzles are sometimes unique, but easy. I liked the way the story was separated into pseudo chapters with the various keys. I found that one puzzle had a glitch in it (the evil figure) which made it impossible to finish. That was a small glitch. The HOS are sort of junk piles and could have been better. Often they were reverse HOS (put the object BACK where it belongs) which I don't particularly like. By the time the game ended, I was satisfied with the ending. The journey to get there, not so much.
I like a challenge, but I don't like to be confused about what the game wants me to do. That's exactly what this game did well; confuse me. I bought it as a catch of the week due to the glowing reviews, but it's just not up to par for me. For those of you who don't want to flounder around trying this and that to figure out what you're supposed to do, avoid this game. This game requires a lot of trial and error. I found the layout of the game head scratching. During the scenes, some items in your list bar are brown, some blue, some are multicolored and I couldn't decide which ones were located within the scene I was viewing. It took me several scenes to finally get it. It's true, as some other reviewers have written, that some of the items it asks for are not visually like what we are used to seeing which makes discovering them a challenge. I was also disappointed in the cartoon-like quality of the drawing. The characters are laughably simple which annoys me. If I'm going to pay for a game, I expect a certain amount of effort from the developers. The drawing is so poor that some objects are virtually unrecognizable. The story is ho-hum and made me yawn within a few minutes, but it's not bad per say. I play all of my games in the most difficult mode without hints or maps and play them quickly. This game actually made me use a hint on the first screen to figure out how the layout worked. I was not amused.
Bottom line: NOT A GAME FOR BEGINNERS..
I don't recommend this game.

Sable Maze: Norwich Caves Collector's Edition
Your students have gone missing during an expedition under the university. Can you track them down before the water rises?
I really liked this game. I found the story to be entertaining. On the hardcore level there are no skips or hints, so I can't offer info on those, but the game isn't so difficult that I needed to use them. I like all of the puzzles in this game even though they were easy. The game does have a jump map but on hardcore level it does not indicate areas that need to be completed. But if you're on hardcore level, you probably don't want that kind of help anyway. I found the game flowed nicely with objects used relatively soon after discovery. i loved the use of characters of multiple ethnic origin. I think that's more reflective of today's societal makeup. Basically speaking, this game is the familiar save the students, save the world theme, but it's done nicely. I enjoyed playing it even though it was a bit short.
I really despise it when a developer uses back and forth movement to compensate for a poor game. I enjoyed the previous two games in this series, but this game is the WORST FOR BACKTRACKING I've ever played. There is no map. The game isn't difficult IF you either take notes on locations or have a very good memory. You will find objects in one area, then have to go backwards 6 times, then over 2, then up 1 to find the next HOS. After that, you won't be able to use what you find. You will accumulate a lot of items in your inventory which are kept there for chapters. There is so much back tracking that my wrist actually became sore from all of the mouse work. I'm not kidding. The story had a lot of potential, but you are running around so much it's easy to lose track of what is going on, where you need to be next and why you're even bothering to play the game. I forced myself to finish it, but I hated the last two chapters very much.
Bottom line: If you play this game, you'll need a lot of patience and SEVERAL PAIRS of hiking boots.
