Loved the graphics - so painterly and intricut, a blend of romanticism and steampunk. Unfortunately the mini games were repetitive and not challenging. Great choice for beginner players to HO and adventure games.
This is a game of snap, as you have to match 2 cards rather than find runs of numbered cards, so I can't see the challenge. Might be fun for a 6 year old.
It could have been my laptop, but this game was super slow, both in gameplay and loading of scenes. On paper this is just the type of game I like as I am a fan of the Nancy Drew style games. But the use of mouse to explore the puzzles was frustrating and impossible in the last mini game, so I had to quit.
Based on full game: At times meditative - at other times frustrating. Probably one of the most challenging and abstract games here. If you fancy a brain workout, I would recommend this game. I needed the Walkthrough a few times, but if you have lots of time on your hands and a notepad you may be able to do without. If you liked the Drawn series, you will enjoy this one.
Having played all of the newest Nancy Drew games I decided to try the older ones. Although this has the old interface and dated graphics, the gameplay, storyline and level of challenge are excellent. It only loses a star, because there is no camera and mobile phone as in later games. Highly recommend, even for those used to the newer games. (I played in Junior mode and only needed 1 clue)
When considering purchasing this game, please bear in mind that it came out in 2006, so the graphics and gameplay are very dated. There are still things to enjoy here, such as the backstory and bartering with Parisians at the Pont Neuf market, but perhaps put this one to the bottom of your ND "to play list".
Serious lack of fun in Hawaii for poor Nancy. Instead of surfing or hula-ing, learning the language or even investigating a crime, Nancy is left sorting out insect dung!...and lots of it. The difference between a game and a chore is the element of FUN, which is sadly lacking in this game. It's chock full of chores instead of real games or excitement. Storyline is also weak compared to the other ND games. You get to play as both Nancy and Frank Hardy in this game, which is nice.
I purchased this game after reading so many positive reviews and it certainly ddn't disappoint.:-# In terms of intrigue and forward motion it outdoes some of the newer games. It only lost a a star because of the infamously annoying Mine game! #Nearly headbutted the screen!# and because the graphics are out-dated, as the game is about 10 years old. There's so much to enjoy in this game - fun characters, great games, interesting backstory #non-US players may miss some of the references), 2 amazing show-stopper animations, etc. I think the programmers would do well to incorporate some elements of this one into their newer releases.
I found this the least challenging of all the ND games - in terms of the adventure and crime-solving as well as the mini-games. Most of the mini-games were suduko-style although there were a few more fun ones towards the end. This game also lacks the jeopardy of previous games, there was no-one on Nancy's tail and it was very quiet and subdued in tone. The characters were all moody or depressed and overall the cast lacked the comedic tone or energy of earlier games. The phone also played a smaller role in this game, whereas it holds vital clues and comedy in other games. They have also removed any vehicle racing games in this one, so when Nancy uses the snowmobile and boat the scene simply cuts. It would've been fun to have an action game for at least the first time she uses each vehicle. :( Overall I enjoyed this game, but completed it quicker than any of the other games and only used the Walkthrough twice - once for the Ship's Wheel game - which made no sense even once I had the solution! and once to get out of the ice caves. I would recommend this for beginners as it's by far the most linear and simplistic of all the range. Fingers crossed the next one is more thrilling!
I am a big fan of the Nancy Drew Games and have played about 10 so far. This and Deadly Device are the 2 least fun ones. With game design, the world is your oyster, I love being a virtual visitor to far off, amazing, opulent places... Here the 3 locations are a Farmhouse, Barn and General Store! Yawn. In the other games Nancy is proactive and as her you have to make intelligent choices about what to do next and who to question, but in THIS game she is constantly bossed about by everyone, fulfilling their mundane chores such as shopping, fixing engines and rodent control (4 vermin games!). She is not an active protagonist. The idea of Twister chasing has lots of possibilities, but they just aren't used. At one point you get to see a tornado and film it. The camera malfunctions, so I took a photo with Nancy's phone. But when Nancy got back to the base, she is told off for not getting any evidence... despite having the photo saved. It feels like a different narrative/game designer with a lack of imagination wrote this one. Avoid!
