This is much better than last years, although I enjoyed that one too. The hops are evenly spaced and interesting. The puzzles also are well placed, and you can replay them when the game is done to master puzzles that had you stumped. A big plus for me:) The story had good pacing and kept me engaged. It alternates with adventure type exploring and the puzzles and hops: this is often lacking in other games. I managed to collect all the coins this time - they are not always easily seen, and you have to keep an eye out for dark corners where they hide. The notes were fairly easy to find, but the statues took some hunting in some scenes! This is definitely going on my top lists of games that will do well played a second or even third time!
Depressing art work, tired story line, repeat of the same ol same ol puzzles, and the HOPS were dismal. Life is depressing enough these days without spending my free time on a depressing game. I didn't even care when the daughter got lost, because of course she would. Predictable. I rarely give bad reviews, but this one isn't even worth a free credit.
I don't recommend this game.

Adera
Jane Sinclaire faces her greatest challenge in the mysterious city of Adera. Solve puzzles, collect artifacts and unlock its secrets!
This game has the feel of the really old "Myst" type games; stunningly beautiful and challenging!
BUT
It is an appallingly short game. I was shocked when it came to such an abrupt end. If, as others have noted, this is an old game put out quite awhile ago in 5 parts, they should have divided into two or even three parts and offered them as CEs. I for one would gladly pay CE prices for this type of excellent challenge, but not for such a very short game.
In all respects this is an outstanding game and the only way I can justify it as it is an SE game is that as an SE game, I can purchase all future "episodes" as free credit games.
I've been a fan of this series since I found "Dire Grove" back in about 2009. It is an excellent creepy/puzzle/hop game, (in that order:) This is another in the great series. As is usual for me I took off points for the consistently grey/purple/black color theme. I know it fits with the genre, but it gets tiring looking at it after awhile. And also points off for the repeated story line - detective has to figure his way out of a mess caused by a psycho/sociopath. But these were my only quibbles. It still rates 5 stars. This is a great game. I've learned more puzzle skills in this series than any other I think! There is only one collectible in each scene, but they were well done and hard to find, which is good:) Also has a morph in each HOP scene (for newbies, here's a non-spoiler hint. When you first open up a HOP scene. take your time and look around for the morph. If you can't find it, select an obvious item and don't click on that one until you've found the morph. Mostly you will. I think one time I didn't. Anyway here's to another great game!
I totally love this series. The games are long, complex with dry and ironic humor thrown in.
THE CHARACTERS; I'm quite fond of our height challenged villain, the Comte St. Germaine, the cute little weasel! He always gets it in the end but he never stops trying!
And the Cardinal (Richelieu, for all intents and purposes) is handsome with a great voice and just the right amount of asperity and command that denotes a great leader, Also the church often _was_ a force for good (hence our Cardinal) although far less than could be desired with their power moves as well as obsessive greed, His Excellency’s Cat, (wish he/she had a name: I call it “The Demonic Black One") is a perfect foil and prop for the Machiavellian Cardinal!
EXTRAS: I didn't find all the morphing objects; I think I missed about 4. I've got to remember to check each scene for them! But I got enough to rebuild the castle after the game was over. Finding the shields was really easy, mostly because they were so big.
The Bonus chapter too, was quite fun, long and had good puzzles and Hops.
BACKGROUND: The presentation of the everyday life in France in the 17th century shows exactly why there was a revolution; the lives of the peasants was beyond deplorable.
My only concern was the endlessly depressing colours, hence only a 4 for the visual/sound quality rating. It would have been a 3 but I liked the Cardinal's voice so much I upped it to 4 :) I recommend this game and the whole series highly, but be warned! This is not a game to be zipped through, but one to be savored. And one needs to pay attention!
Hooray! St. Germaine, that height challenged grumpy villain is back, along with the inscrutable Cardinal Richileau (I know they don't name him, but who else could it be???) with his superbly arrogant bad kitty. I totally love this series, and these regulars are a wonderfully familiar chain that locks the whole series together.
The only area I marked a little less on was the artwork because it could have been more crisp and less gray tone and de-focused.
I did note that the puzzles were somewhat easy this time round, but that is fine by me. I play these games for the adventure and HO aspects not the puzzles.
I'm going to buy this game as soon as I can. I love the surprise at the end of the demo, which goes a long way to making this story unpredictable.
Normally I don't post until I've played the whole game, but the other negative reviews made me want to give another view point "tout de suite"! Happy Gaming!
I enjoyed this game so much, I can hardly wait to play it again! Although I'll probably wait at least 6 months, so it's more of a challenge. My only complaint, it that some scenes were too dark and made it difficult to locate objects. Not impossible, just not as pleasing as a better defined scene would be. I liked that there was a singleness about the story line. It was clear who the master criminal was.Mind you, it helps if you choose what path you follow based on the Guide (CE edition)(just makes it easier if you need help). But all in all this game was more focused than previous games in the series. As always it was fun to see Victorian ("Belle Epoque"?) styles at the turn of the century. i DEFINITELY recommend this game.
I lasted about 5 minutes. The game pace and engine pace is so slow I gave up in frustration. You couldn't do anything while they were speaking and they waited way too long.
Also the introduction was confusing. Didn't realize until he was painting that he was an artist. Before that he was just some wealthy kid with enui.
If you can take the slow pace give it a try. I can't recommend it though.
I recently replayed this old game, and it played very well. The story was interesting; this time around I noticed the hypocrisy of the "avenger". I also liked the aspect of choosing the punishment (or not) for the "villain". Dev did a good job with the story which kept moving. One thing I noticed is that in the bonus gifts was the set of jigsaw type puzzles made of the "Bestiary" card collection. These were very well done and rather unusual. I actually kept playing until I had solved all nine of the puzzles. With CE's I usually just am satisfied with well done morphs and collectibles, don't bother much with the screen savers (who uses those anymore anyway?) rarely listen to the music and maybe glance at the artwork. Much rather have a chance to find missed items, although in this case I found everything. I recommend this game as part of a well done series. They certainly give you a great range of subject matter in the series. This one has none of the newer characters from the "academy" but is still an excellent story, even though it is over 5 years old

Well written story of misplaced love, anger and pride. This is an old game but so very well done. The art work was enchanting and fresh; I never got bored with the scenery.
I took points off for not following up with the hidden object/morphing items in each scene. (something current devs regrettably sometimes do!) I've no idea how many I got; There was a medallion at the bottom of the page which showed how many you had, but I never figured out what those morphs were for and most I got by accidentally clicking on them and didn't even see what they were.
I did find all the puzzle pieces; there were 1 or two in each scene, generally in close ups. After the bonus chapter you can go back into the "extras" and put all the pieces into three completed puzzles (the puzzles were well done with very odd slanted shapes, so a bit of a challenge but not too hard) which yields a picture of the young lovers. Then you can replay the mini games. The bonus game completed the story, so that was good, although it was very short. But the main game was so long that it all evened out. I highly recommend this game in the CE version!
