There are some fantasy games that are appealing and others that are not. Dream of Ruin is of the latter category, this is not a dream, rather it is a nightmare and one I'd rather not suffer from. Once again we find ourselves with a princess destined to marry a prince from another land only to learn there is some evil force that turns the princess, Selene, into a version of Sleeping Beauty, YAWN. Been there done that too many times. Turns out the evildoer is Beatrix, the mother of Selene. Then we get to see an apparition of Selene who tells of a quest that only we can accomplish to save her and so on and so forth..............gosh I already don't care. We have a flying tiger to take us to different areas and of course portals, where would a game be today without portals. There are some aspects of the game I really enjoyed. First and foremost is that there is very little hand holding. I thought I played the demo in the easiest mode which is what I always do in demos. When some found item is to be used as an assist, the cursor turns into a gear but there is no other help. I like the fact the game player must through trial and error solve problems on his or her own. I also enjoyed the HOG segments which were very creative and had lots of items well hidden but not impossible to locate. There were a couple of puzzles in the demo whose directions were somewhat confusing thus making the puzzle needlessly harder to complete. For those who groove on collectibles, I found none so this is one case where a CE purchase is not recommended. As has been the case with lots of new games of late it is the story itself which completely turns me off. This one borders on the ridiculous IMO. It is generally the story which compels a player to proceed with any game. Then the actions within said game is the decider as to a buy or no sale. For me, the no sale decision took about 10 minutes into the demo. I completed it hoping to find improvement. Alas, my hopes were dashed.
Lots of other reviewers have given fantastic descriptions of this outstanding game. It's not too often that we are presented this brand of excellence without the need to pay CE prices. I will not go into any game specifics since , I have said, others have given apt and in depth accounts of the game play. What I want to add to the discussion is who Mnemosyne is. She is the goddess of memory in Greek mythology. Mnemosyne is the daughter of Uranus and Gaea. She gave birth to the 9 Muses fathered by Zeus. I can only gather from this information that memories are vital to the game and given there are 9 clues to decipher there may be some connection to the myth. So, I need to buy this gem to learn if and how the myth correlates to the story of The Ward.
Like so many new games lately there is much to admire and and equal amount to dislike which prevents the game to rise to 5 star status. The story line to me is extremely lame given what we all know about the Renaissance and its outstanding thinkers. Leonardo DaVinci is central to the story line and he has been captured by an evil Mage who's intent is initially to annex all of Florence to his own devises and then all of Italy. He has convinced the majority of the residents that his magic and predictions are to be followed without reproach. Fortunately there is an underground movement of sorts that realizes the Mage is no more than a charlatan never to be believed. That's where we come in. My biggest problem with the story is that Leonardo, one of the greatest minds of all time, is seemingly unable to deal with the Mage on his own. So he needs our help, which of course without it there would be no game. Leonardo has planted clues and items of assistance throughout Florence so that we can save the day. We have a mechanical pigeon that retrieves out of the way items. We have a man made sheep that eats vegetation so that we may acquire things. I named my sheep Merino, get it, Merino. Other than the ridiculous story line the game play is rather good. Some of the hidden object segments involve finding one thing which must be used to get another and use the second item to recover the third, etc. There were only 2 straightforward segments wherein a list of objects was provided. The puzzles had some variations of familiar puzzle themes that veteran HOGgers have seen countless times. One involving placing candles in certain slots and another painting a fake DaVinci were clever. The game is graphically very well done which is typical of ERS games. I am still waiting for this developer to utilize lip movement during cut scenes to make the games a bit more realistic. There is a jump map and we must collect coins along the way to make purchases which will enable us in the quest to defeat the Mage. There is also a cube that can occasionally be entered into to perform a task that will also move the game forward. Overall, this Grim Facade entry is bordering on excellent and I suppose I will purchase it, just not right now. I need to get over my reluctance concerning the story line as it revolves around Leonardo's ineptitude. This is where ERS dropped the ball. DaVinci could have been portrayed as the mental giant he is with the need of us players to assist him in rendering Florence of the evil Mage.
For me, the first and second Maestro games were worthy of purchases but I felt the third was lacking. I am pleased to report that ERS has risen to the occasion and has prepared a worthy 4th game. The opening cut scene was very well done. The ghostly apparitions reminded me of the Deatheaters in the fantastic Harry Potter novels. They have brought a long dead singer back to life somehow and she became known simply as Diva. There is some nefarious person, as yet to be identified during the demo ( took me 42 minutes ), who somehow controls Diva. Her singing sucks the life essence out of her audience so she is obviously a pawn of the bad guy. We meet a man who has created a medallion that neutralizes the minions of the evil doer. We as the detective must occasionally recharge the medallion by finding and inserting gemstones into it. There is much to admire about Dark Talent and yes there are some shortcomings as well. The game is stylistically well crafted. The hidden object segments are at ERS usual fine standard. The puzzles are good with a couple of new types which is always good to find. On the minus end of things, I would be very pleased if ERS would start to make character lips move during speaking sessions, since so many game makers now do it, it cannot be that difficult. The background music in all games by ERS has become rather annoying and it never changes. It's a good thing players have the option of silencing the score. The demo ends with the Diva singing, if one can call it that. It sounded more like caterwauling to me. If the game is centered around the greatest opera singer of her generation, perhaps we can hear the Diva perform a segment of an actual aria. This game is issued as a CE. I found no map, there are no collectible items other than the needed gems unless I just missed them. There is a ferret during the demo who is not really a helper. I hope it doesn't get in the way as the game progresses. I for one will wait until the SE version comes along simply because there is nothing enticing enough to spend the extra money. All in all, a rather fine game.
On its own Cursed Castle manages to be a decent game. My problem is that I have played this game time and time again. The names change, the location changes, the villain changes yet everything remains the same. It all boils down to the total lack of originality that this developer, and it does stand alone, continually foists upon us and BFG's insistence that we are getting a new game every day. HOGWASH !! This is only a new game to someone brand spanking new to this or any other website that offers HOG and HOPA style games. If any player were to scroll down the couple thousand games that BFG lists among its hidden object games, it will be more than easy to select a few hundred that mirrors Spirit of Revenge to a T. How many of us game players are clamoring for something NEW ? This game starts with a detective driving to a castle to find a child separated from her family is some bizarre fashion. Hmmm, I thing I've seen this before............countless times. If I want to play this game I need only to peruse the purchased games in my own inventory, select one and then save myself some money and not buy this one. For the totally uninitiated, Cursed Castle on its own does offer some compelling features. If it were an original offering the story line would be of interest. The hidden object segments are clever in their own right. Some are straight forward find the listed items while others offer variations on the theme. The puzzles in the demo nothing new and all are easy to fathom. Graphically the game is well done. Perhaps I am somewhat jaded given the number of years I have been enjoying myself with this brand of computer games. The bummer is the often total lack of originality that all the developers constantly tell us " this is a new game " . All we have here are different color shirt, pants, hat and shoes. There is nothing new about the game at all. The newcomers to the genre should find some enticement in Spirit but for me and I am sure countless other veteran game players, this is deja vu over and over again. This is not a game I would ever consider purchasing because I already have it, multiple times. It is unfortunate that the genre has reached a saturation point and only the game makers can alter this fact.I can recommend the game for newbies but not for anyone else.It is a halfhearted recommendation to say the least.
The developer is a new one and if this game had hit the market a few years ago, lots of folks would have enjoyed it immensely. However a game with 2009 standards just doesn't cut it in 2014. I assume the developer does not have the technical knowledge to create something that is commonplace in today's gaming world. On the plus side, the hidden object scenes are well done with some items cleverly hidden in plain sight. Graphically the game looks good and is easy on the eye. The story line is nothing new. What few puzzles I encountered in the demo which for me ended after 35 minutes of play were all easy to master. This game is geared toward the beginner HOPA player. For those of us who have thrilled over MCF games, the Awakening series, the Dark Parables, etc. Dream Catchers cannot fill the bill. Since the game is called the Beginning perhaps the developer has a sequel in mind. If so, refine and broaden the techie side of game creation. Then you might have something compelling.
I am somewhat perplexed by Labyrinths and as a result I am confused as to how to rate it let alone try to describe it. As is the case with so many games we find ourselves in an attempt to rescue Margaret, a scientist working with a mad genius. He is using the soul of Margaret to rule not only our world but also that of some mystical beings encountered during game play. To say the game is steeped in fantasy is an understatement as this is one of the weirdest games to come along in quite awhile. There are some really fine aspects to the game and some lesser elements as well. Since this is a CE then during voiceovers I am increasingly of the opinion that developers make speaker lips move. Is it so hard to add this one touch of realism in an otherwise fantasy world? We also have ourselves another assistant, in this case a harlequin who manages to fix broken items which will aid in our quest. She is totally unnecessary as I would rather be able to repair such items myself given the opportunity. We HOPA players do not need our hands held all the time so please developers, take heed in future endeavors. The hidden object sections are well done with interactivity required to complete each section. The puzzles on the other hand are all way too easy, at least in the demo which I completed in 67 minutes. There are 2 types of collectibles which will allow us to visit either a museum or a boudoir, neither of which is accessible during the demo. In fact, an attempt to access the boudoir resulted in nothing but a white screen on my monitor. I hope this is not some form of glitch. I cannot see myself buying the CE version as it offers nothing compelling enough for me to spend the extra dollars even with this weekend sale. The story, incredible as it it, will undoubtedly get me to sink a few bucks into the SE when it is issued. All in all, this is a decent game. I am not overwhelmed by it primarily due to the ease of the puzzles. I'm showing 4 stars in my rating. 3.5 stars is more appropriate. Nice try DOMINI GAMES, with a bit more effort you could have given us a gem.
One of the biggest gripes I have with some games is that the developer, BLAM in this case, fails in the due diligence arena. This is certainly the case here. Snow leopards, in reality among the most beautiful and most reclusive of the big cats, are indigenous to the Himalayas and other high altitude regions of the Orient. So what in the blue blazes are they doing in Snowville? Why could not Blam have set its game in the proper part of the world? A touch of realism in an otherwise fantasy game cannot hurt. It would have been nice too if the cats had been drawn as well as the jaguars in the recent Blood Moon game. Another aspect of the game demo I found lacking was a lack of development in the story line. Perhaps this is due to the rather limited time the demo lasts. I finished it in less than 1/2 hour. Therefore I don't have much to sink my teeth into. Am I also to surmise the overall game length is shorter than the average CE stemming from the demo? Graphically the game gets a mediocre grade which should be taboo in a CE priced game. The hidden object segments were OK with no word lists during the demo. The puzzles were of the been there done that variety. I really enjoyed the first Fierce Tales game. The second in the series took a step in the wrong direction and this third installment has taken another step downward. I can never see myself buying the CE but since my favorite 4 legged creatures are the big cats ( Bengal tigers being #1 on my hit parade ) I most likely will end up getting the SE at some point and more than likely using a free game credit. I repeatedly mention that developers are churning games out with such rapidity that quality has taken a back seat of late. When less and less games are being bought, will the game makers finally realize that ultimately they themselves are the ones who will suffer? Lots of us own hundreds of games. I have no misgivings about replaying the better games rather than spending my money on retreads. This game gets a lukewarm endorsement and only because of the cats.
I purchased the CE version of this wonderful game in part because the Mayan series is an excellent one, in part because the series creators are among the best in the business and in part since the demo proved to me that as a stand alone game Blood Moon certainly rises well above the mediocrity that has been so abundant in 2014. The story line is somewhat compelling although it is in the category of those requiring the player to suspend belief. We have another evildoer bent on destruction and it is our task to save the planet as we know it. We get an assist from a character in the game who is transformed into a jaguar by the bad guy. Now I am as fed up with animal helper as most of us but in this case the big cat is so lifelike and does not do things any real life jaguar could not do. In fact all of the cats in the game and there are lots of them bring a significant degree of realism in their movements and sounds. Kudos to the devs for giving us such beautiful creatures. The hidden object segments and the puzzles are top notch with some of the puzzles quite cleverly done. The graphics throughout the game are among the best we can hope to find. The game is of above average length including a very long CE bonus chapter. For those who appreciate collectibles, Blood Mood has them. This is a game that should be acquired in the CE version since it has so much to offer. Having said that, for any game player who for whatever reason cannot afford the CE, be certain to add the SE to your collection. 2014 for me has been an overall disappointment regarding game quality. Makers have been churning them out with such rapidity that style and substance suffer. Slow down developers and do more thinking and less production line forms of entertainment. Blood Moon is my very favorite game this year, so far. I would be thrilled to have something else take its place during the last third of the year.
...............for women only. I have tried like crazy to figure out Dana Knightstone games and with this one I think I finally have put my finger on it. Doing the demo, there was a familiarity to it and I realized that I was involved in the beta test. As I recall the beta, I was basically unimpressed while the finished version is an improvement. There are some aspects of the game I really enjoy and others that leave me wanting. Some of them are little things that are annoying. Dana in the initial cut scene is trapped in a car after an avalanche. She escapes and is greeted by a caretaker who implores her to get inside a building at once since she must be freezing, yet he's dressed for the summer. It seems our heroine is a lookalike for a dead Alexandra who was murdered on her wedding night and her husband is bent on replacing the bride with Dana. Keep in mind these characters are all ghosts as well as a dog helper to Dana. He fetched items out of reach in another lame inclusion of critter assistants. The cut scenes are generally well done. I just wish that developers always made lips move when folks speak. The hidden object segments are fairly standard, most being of the fractured variety. The puzzles during the demo are all fairly easy. There was one involving realigning 4 cut glass windows which is really neat. The demo ends with the capture and execution of Nicolae ( without any trial I may add ) who is the accused murderer of Alexandra. There is much to enjoy in this game however I must harken back to the opening of my review. As a male game player, this game " reads" like a romance novel and as such it leaves me cold. This is not the style of book I would ever read, so it's not the type of game that I would ever buy. Lots of the ladies who enjoy HOPA's should find this game a welcome addition. I want developers to occasionally give me a man's man as protagonist. I give this game 4 stars primarilly since it is well done with the caveat that it is certainly geared to a female audience. On a strictly male level, it would only get 2 stars for the story line. My wife is not a HOPA player but occasionally will tackle a game together. This is one I might use a free game code to acquire the SE version later on because she may enjoy the story. By the way, there are no obvious collectibles or any other inducements to purchase the CE. So ladies, enjoy this new Dana game. Sorry fellas, this isn't for us. Find a Lee Child book instead.
