This game has all kinds of delightful twists on traditional HOGs - the puzzles were pretty easy, but they are different as well, with some being the usual fare.
I really thought the story line was good as well, you go to different dimensions and you have put everything right before you can move on.
The graphics are beautiful; I don't listen to the music because I find it too much of a distraction while I am playing the game, so I turn completely down. There were quite a few parts of this game that startled me, so it was also good in a spooky kind of way.
And the best part - there's actually an ending! But it does leave a possibility for another game of this sort.
All in all, a pretty cool game - worth the price. The only thing I did not care for was, there is no kind of journal or map, but the hint button recharges quickly, and points you in the right direction. I did get stumped a couple of times - which is a blessing and curse - blessing it adds to the level of challenge; curse I had to go to the walkthrough a couple of times, which I really hate because I want to stay with the game and play it.
A good buy and I do hope they come out with another one like this.
I've only played a few minutes of this game, but the level of challenge is pretty good, no hint button when you want to know what to do next, but you have a task list, a map, a journal, a character list, and an evidence list; also, if you're stuck, there is a walkthrough. Really great graphics, and the hos are the bomb. I don't mind the smaller items in the hos as that makes those challenging as well. As Kimmer70 stated, it will be frustrating for the beginners, and also I agree with her that having to pick through dialog is really boring to me*.
I have only one complaint about these games - do we HAVE to have slugs, nose bulbs, cockroaches and other equally gross things in the hos?
*And Kimmer70, it was my pleasure to read your first review, it was excellent! :)
Cool - game! It's got an auction, hos, puzzles galore, AND a neat little gnome who gives you clues about the demise of the owner of the mansion and all the antiques!
Some pretty cool puzzles, this game has kept my interest peaked since beginning it - each level brings a new surprise!
You get to ferret out hidden rooms, tunnels, etc., to find antiques that have been hidden. I usually only play games like Gardenscapes, Chronicles of Albian, etc, when I am bored and don't have any other games to play - but this one, well, let's just say it beats them all hands down! It's got a little of everything, Match 3, the auction as mentioned above - where, btw, YOU control how much you get for items, hos - which for the most part are pretty easy.
Have loved playing this game - can't remember when I was so excited to get to the end of a game!
This was as good the Spirits of Mystery - Amber Maiden - this was actually better, I think.
Graphics are awesome, didn't listen to the music, I find it too much of a distraction while playing the game. The puzzles in this game were good, not so challenging they can't be beat. Very nice sg as well; usually the first time I play, I use sg a lot and this was excellent - not at all like Escape From Ravenhearst!
The HOS were a mix of regular and find it by the shape of the pic. Most of these were not all hard, with a couple of tough ones towards the end of the list - also, you get to play some interactive items.
The story was great and kept me interested thru the whole game - I love HOG that are about dragons, phoenixes, magic! Too bad the real world isn't like this! lol
Some of the best scenes ever - and the little creatures (or critters) interaction was pleasantly amusing - with the one at the end being the best!
This is a must buy; I only played about 10 minutes of the demo before I bought it.
I have played this game over and over, and every time I play, love it even more!
It has a great story line, and while I am not a fan of the circle hos, at least you're looking for things that pertain to the story.
A gypsy is to break the curse, not a new story, but this one leads you from one place to another, although, when you find all the jewels and the items you need, the locations get added to your map, and you can use that to jump around with, which I like, as I absolutely despise retracing my steps.
Of course, you're object is to defeat the evil Sorceress, and have a happily ever after - and I do wish they would put out another one of these games w/the gypsy investigator!
This is one of my standby faves to play when I am bored with everything else, and definitely feel I got my money's worth since I played it more than once!
I bought the first one of this series so I could get the 2nd one free and fill up my punch card.
However, thought this one was much better than the first, although I have to say again - what kind of sicko preys on the fears of others, especially children's fears?
This was much better, really liked the difference in the puzzles compared to the usual fare, these were very well thought out by the developer.
The HOS were well done, but just for once, can we actually get an HOS that has something to do with the story? There are so many things added to HOS in the current games, why do the developers insist on using the same old things in every HOG out there? If I never have to look for another feather, horseshoe, clothespin, frog, etc., I will be a happy camper!
This one was over too quickly, the first one dragged on interminably. The ending of this one, like so many others, felt just thrown together at the last minute
I had not played this one before, because it just didn't look like something I was interested in. I was right about that!
However, by the middle of the game I was hooked, only to get thru it - I mean, what's up with the half man, half octupus guy? That was just strange. I also thought some of the content was just disgustingly gross, i.e., what kind of sicko plays on the fears of others?
HOS were just difficult enough to be somewhat of a challenge, which I confess, I like very much; however, like some of the other HOGs out there, some items were misnamed, so difficult to figure out what exactly you're looking for.
The puzzles were not overly difficult, I felt some could have been a bit more challenging. That being said, I found the puzzles refreshingly different and fun, and a few even great.
I did have to refer to the walkthrough several times to figure out what to do next, some things were left so long, that you forget about them in completing the rest of the game
When it takes me half the demo to even get out of the house - yikes! Also, I am NOT a fan of of finding and putting things in a circle, give me a regular old HOS every time!
I found this game very boring, and with no clear indication of what to do next. I didn't play the first one, but if it's anything like this one, glad I didn't.
I played this several weeks ago, and every time I scroll the list of HOGs and come across this one, I cringe!
I do not recommend this game, and one review says it all, her 7 yr old gave it up in disgust!
What I liked best about this game were the "historical ghosts" they were very entertaining.
I did not like all the back and forth which most of these games are filled with, I get quite bored w/that after a while.
Also, you know, it's kinda funny, the description of the game was about the queen's lover, but there wasn't one; and after playing the game, saw they changed the description - I actually hope they come out with one based on the original description, that's what caught my interest.
Loved all the ghosts, they were great! Especially the evil King Richard III, he was just funny, ordering the wench around, and the one history says probably murdered the 2 boys, but was never proven.
The thing I really disliked about this game, there were not really any clear directions, and had to go to the walkthrough numerous times, which I hate, have exit the game, read some notes, etc. Also, some of the inventory items had to be held for way too long.
Probably worth the dd or catch of the week price - it is a good long game, which makes me feel like I get my money's worth; but again, after so much running around, it just gets boring; plus another ending that feels like it's just tossed in there.
