It took me around 3 hours to play this whole SE.
I agree 100% with what Penmom36 said in her review of this game. 9 times out of 10 we have exactly the same taste in casual games.
Most of us that are here at BFG for the long run, and have played the older games as well as the new ones, will probably enjoy this game the most.
THESE ARE THE THINGS I LOVED:
THE GRAPHICS. I adore computerized graphics where scenes and HOS items are easy to identify. The graphics in this game are perfect. It is so sad that ALL the new games seem to be hand drawn and those of us that prefer the look of Xbox, & PS3 games don't have this type of graphic to choose from anymore.
MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW:
***** All widescreen computers. You need to go into "options" and change check both boxes
*x*Fullscreen AND *x* Widescreen together. You will have a black bar on either side but it REALLY clarifies the graphics.
This is an older game so there is no portal task map. There are no voice overs but the cut scenes were really REALLY good. There is not even a blog walkthrough guide to help you through. So you need to REALLY MOUSE OVER A SCENE to identify items and what to do next. Same with zoom windows to insure you don't miss an object needed to progress as there are no constant sparkles to tell you where everything is. In this game there are a lot of HOS. They are all list type- my favorite. So if you don't like HOS I doubt this game is for you.
A PERFECT GAME FOR HALLOWEEN. The creep factor is high. A Shtriga is an evil spirit that can manifest as a person or animal. Now this is where the story bummed me out a bit.
DIDN'T LIKE: At one point, around chapter 3 --I am guessing.... I figured out when a chapter ends by-- you lose all inventory pick-ups at the end of each chapter... This shtriga took on the body of a black cat. Black cats are already considered "unlucky" so I didn't like that part of the story. It makes them harder to be adopted from shelters in real life; and it's hard enough already.
I also did not like that the number 6 --3 times-- is used in a HOS. And finally, you come upon a house belonging to a hunter and there are birds about and they are NOT flying.
I wish the developers would really take into account how many of us don't want to see this kind of thing in a casual game.
I did continue on though, BECAUSE this game was SO different from the cookie cutter games of today, and so like the games of yesterday, that I LOVED IT. I could not stop playing.
I also loved the challenge of it. It is probably better for more experienced gamers, also the long timers devoted here at BFG, or a person that has more patience.
IF YOU LIKED THIS GAME: TRY THESE GREAT FOR HALLOWEEN OLDER GAMES.
1. Shadows: Price for your fears. -- this game starts at a
Halloween party and the graphics & play are very similar. I actually play it every Halloween!
2. Campfire Legends: This is a 3 game series, and the last two are the best --The Babysitter & The Last Act.
3. Shiver #both The Vanishing Hitchhiker & The Poltergeist#
4. Voodoo Whisperer: Curse of a legend
5. Mystery of the Ancients: Lockwood Manor &
6. Dark Dimensions: City of Fog
I loved this game and wish the developers would bring these awesome graphics back.
I recommend this game!

*note to anyone who doesn’t know this…. be sure to always change the “sort by” method on this page to see the NEWEST people, as those are usually the ones that have actually finished the game and not just the demo…. Also. If you “mouse over” the Big-fisher’s username- in blue- you can see their other reviews.
The SE portion of the game took me 4 hours & 50 minutes
The bonus play took me, 1hr 40min
Total gameplay 6 hr. 20min
I actually used the stop watch on my cell phone whenever I was playing this. I do tend to try and do all the puzzles --although I am NOT a mini game fan, unless they are unusual. I will skip them the second I’m annoyed. I do all the HOS without hints & with penalty. I play on “custom” mode. This game has EASY/HARD mode for all the mini games, which is a HUGE plus for me on this game. So I’m telling you how I play because it may be faster for some.
The graphics and scenery, throughout the game are positively OUTSTANDING. Another thing I loved about the gameplay, you don't carry items all that long so you remember where they go. I love how it only takes a moment to look over the scene to see where an item should be placed, WITHOUT opening the secondary window. There are MORPHS to locate in each new scene, which I always see as a plus. It has many different types of hidden object scenes to cater to all of us.
Though I am not a huge fan of the standard type of mini games, this one has some great ones. The voice overs were good, the special effects didn’t wash out the scene and each new page.
IF YOU LIKED THIS GAME TRY THESE:
1. Mystery Tales Her own eyes. Gameplay is identical to this.
2. Whispered Secrets: Ever burning Candle is also very similar. It also has a burning witch.

I preferred MT #4 better because I liked the story better. I liked this story too, as I live a town over from Salem, MASS where in 1692 there were witch hangings. So I did like the basic story and learning the history of the European witches, but I’m not a huge fan of characters that fly such as witches, queens etc.
I absolutely HATE fantasy games and we have seen a lot of those in 2016.  Because this game had the paranormal flare it was refreshing to play a game where I’m mostly “grounded”.
WHAT YOU COLLECT & ITS ULTIMATE PURPOSE:
1. 36 Tarot cards can be found in the zoom windows. When they are all collected a mini game unlocks with multi-level matching and it was really fun.
2. Witches spells- pieces of white paper can be found in the main scenes and go into a book. Each one you collect has a small description of something a witch used or liked based on historical data.
3. 15 morphing Torture items- These were rather large and easy to locate and are scattered in only some scenes. There is a page devoted to them and it also gives true historical detail of how these items were used on the accused. It is scary and sad what people did to each other back then.
I preferred the collectables in Mystery Tales Her own eyes.
FAVORITE AREAS IN THIS GAME ARE - Chapter 3 starts with an adorable Jack Russell Terrier. Chap. 3 pg. 17 of WTG has a great billiards game which I’ve never seen before and it was a blast. Bummer that those MG can’t be replayed in the bonus content.

There is a Ouija board poking out from under the bed in Amelie’s room, so I think we know why her eyes a glowing. Chap. 3 pg. 19 had a mini game using spools of thread you use to color a picture. And Chap.3 also had a MG with a computer where you use UV light & password that was innovative. Chapter 4 starts with a gorgeous outdoor scene called Harbor. The area called Haunted Lake is equally beautiful. Chapter 5 starts at Madeline’s house and again I was just wowed with the graphics, lighting & scenery.
My very favorite part is in chapter 5 you get to play as a raven flying over the land in 3d. Incredible. Chapter 5 into 6 has a similar spot. In this MG, you create a broom then fly over the land via a cut scene. Chapter 6 also has a HOS that I’ve never seen before. They used 3 colored candles and you found the objects via color. This HOS was so pretty BECAUSE of these vibrant crisp graphics.
NARRATED STORYBOOK TYPE GAMES. The demo has a great one where you locate three highlighted words. There are 3 pages of this that gives more background and depth to the story of the witches. The narration is perfect.
GRAPHICS- These graphics deserve their own title. Domini pays such close attention to detail such as what you see in the background of a scene. Another huge developer here will often use what looks like concept art in the background which I just can’t stand. It feels like they don’t have enough time to complete a scene. But Domini has this nailed and these artists also use perspective right. I prefer clear crisp scenes without so many filters you can’t find an object. I also prefer more computerized over hand drawn graphics. The color here is pure and bright.
MAP & HINT- Many of the portal maps we see are just quick sketches. This map is a work of art by itself. I for one, notice these details that take more time to perfect a game. It is also a helpful portal jump, tasked map and a walkthrough guide is really not necessary for the SE.
Hint does not have portal jump but it is a helpful step by step and will redirect you to the task map if your lost.
DEVICE SPECIAL TO THIS GAME: are the “glasses” that alter the visual in a location and show our main characters spin on what happened in a location that can’t be seen, and in the past. We used them first in MT Her own eyes, and I liked using them equally here.
ABOUT BONUS PLAY: The SE stands on its own from bonus play. The bonus story is only somewhat related. There is dark magic in the city and my psychic glasses are still needed for this mission. You get to use the glasses 6 more times in bonus play. You have to stop three witches and prevent the black death from spreading.
YOU PLAY 11 BRAND NEW AREAS IN BONUS. There were 11 more mini games, which I played them all except 2. I so wish they would give us double the amount of HOS in a hidden object game. You CONTIUE collecting items at the end of the SE and in the bonus play.
THE CE BONUS CONTENT TABS INCLUDE: 14 wallpapers that save to doc file. 15 concept art with logo, 5 dl music tracks, bonus play, and a 64 page, in game walkthrough guide that includes 6 chapters and a bonus chapter, Achievements, torture chamber, tarot cards, witch book., and 13 Concept art that also has logo & saves to doc file.
Sadly, neither the match 3, nor the cut scenes can be replayed. I always re-watch the cut scenes to refresh the story.
STRATEGY GUIDE
There is an in game 64pg walkthrough guide. To give you an idea of how long the bonus play is, the Demo is 12 pages long & bonus chapter 13PGS. So the bonus play is longer than the demo. I know with the jump maps that many people don’t use the WTG any more, but I am actually one that uses it with every game.
Huge hugs to all of you at Big Fish, and Domini Games that created this great game!! I am one of your biggest fans. I don’t know WHAT I’d do if Domini included a screensaver with their games because I usually will by a CE that has one. I’d probably go broke! You make em’ and I’ll keep buying! Thank you so much!!
I recommend this game!

I did a similar review on this game for the CE version. The bonus play & materials aren't included in SE, but you may want to see what they are in case you want to upgrade to the CE.
********* Tried not to but, MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS**********
The Standard Edition SE took me 4 hrs. & 45 minutes.
Bonus play took me 53 minutes (but I skipped most the MG)
I was a huge fan of the other two games in this series, and played full the CE to all 3. I did not like this game as much as the other two. First, I wasn’t a fan of the story. Second, I noticed in some screens the graphics were not as clear, as others. Some seemed cartoony compared with other screens. The other 2 games both have outstanding graphics, lighting and color. I don’t want to mistake how pretty the world is though especially the areas in demo that you play “on shore”.
Most of the rest of the SE is played in the underwater city and the entire bonus is minus 1 room. I was ready to drown those stupid aqua people. Third, the CE content was not great and I found myself checking the end of the WTG to see when the bonus play would end. I was bored and not even reading the terrific diary included—which I usually love. I just didn’t care about the characters, or saving the city. Geez, I really hated this storyline. There are a lot of beautifully done cut scenes in bonus play that push the story. Only 3 are re-watchable from bonus.
CE BONUS CONTENT:
BONUS PLAY: It is a year after the SE story ends… and you are once again friends with the baddie from the SE edition. Unfortunately, there is a monster wreaking havoc on the underwater city you and Dolores now live in. I found the storyline really out there. You have a dolphin helper throughout the entire game, which I did like. The MAP shows 12 new/ locked at first/ areas of gameplay, and strangely, 2 areas remained locked on me after the bonus credits rolled! I am not sure if this has to do with Achievements. I missed one it said. I am not one to give a hoot about achieve. unless they unlock more bonus material. The one I missed was to “save Dolores” and I did do that, in the SE!
So I played 10 areas in bonus play. Of these, 7 were new, and 3 areas we’ve played in SE. These underwater areas look so much alike that Marcus’ room and the first area of play Aqua house looked the same. There are 5 HOS and 5 MG in the bonus play.
IN GAME STRATEGY GUIDE: Which are 62 pages, 6 chapters, & a bonus chapter. To give a better idea how long game play will be Chapter 1 is 4 pgs. , Chapter 2 is 6 pgs., Chapter 3 is 6 pgs. , Chapter 4 is 6 pgs., Chapter 5 is 9 pgs., Chapter 6 is 5 pgs., and BONUS PLAY is 15 pages. The rest is instructions & collectables.
REPLAY: 9 MINIGAMES- 2 of which remains locked until bonus is complete. I never replay these.
NO REPLAY OF HOS. There are 9 CUT SCENES to replay and 3 are still locked until bonus.
WALLPAPERS- 9 x 3 sizes and they save to your doc file for later use.
CONCEPT ART- 8 viewable/ non-savable drawings. It didn’t matter to me; I am not a fan of concept art.
MUSIC- 7 savable tracks, I saved game theme 1. The first FT had outstanding music.
COLLECTABLES- You collect a lot in this game, 3 different things. Morphing turtles in most scenes that unlock an achievement. Then you collect shells in secondary windows to use as currency for 2 different
bonus windows, aquarium and dolphin pool.
3 BONUS PAGES for COLLECTABLES- 1 is a play pool for your helper dolphin. You can buy him food, throw him a ball, a hoop he jumps through and a whistle will make him perform. During standard game play this dolphin pool can’t be accessed to get items, as you go, for the dolphin, as we are able to with Mystery Trackers- 4 ACES’ dog Elf. Instead you can only access this window through the main menu.
This would have been a grand feature if I had a toddler watching me play.
The other window was for an aquarium you could buy a sea castle and a bunch of plants for. Finally, you collected Sea Animals every few scenes in the game and this unlocks a book that has a small bit of information explaining what that creature is. The sea animal book just seemed pointless, but I suppose if you are playing with a child they may enjoy it more.
IF YOU LIKED THIS GAME, TRY THESE SIMILAR ONES…..
1. Mystery Trackers 4 Aces
2. Ominous Objects: Phantom Reflection
I recommend this game!

**********May contain spoilers**********
The Standard Edition took me over 7 hours. It takes time figuring out the puzzles in order to continue.
I reviewed this game under CE DEMO back in 2012, and since it's taken me a while to actually play it completely. The SE does not come with the walk through guide or extras but here are the details for the CE version in case you want to compare.
My opinion of this game went down since I first reviewed the CE demo and completed the game. But I am a "long term" gamer, so the older games do still appeal to me.
This is the FIRST game we ever saw morphing in scenes. All the hidden object scenes in this game are “find morphs”. In 2012 those were new to casual games. We saw a little of them in Mystery Trackers, Raincliff too where frogs morphed, if I recall.
This game would take a main scene and suddenly a number appears at lower right and you know there are now 12 morphs to look for and it becomes a HOS.
Like the funny Penmon36 reviewer, I too LOVE MORPHS! They used them again in MCF Shadow Lake too, which I also enjoyed.
This game is NOT for hand- holder; and DEFINETALY NOT for children. You get a very accomplished feeling after completing a puzzle and even remembering your way around without a map is a challenge!
I highly suggest using a Walkthrough guide as I needed it step by step- and just to find my way around. The BFG Forums are also very helpful to continue in this game if you’re stuck.
The graphics here are UNRIVELED. More computer gen and less hand drawn. My ONLY problem is how the screen "adjusted" in size to my larger monitor as the scene stretched and seemed off. But if you play on a 15" computer you're golden. I often wonder if the DEV are capable in this day in age to produce a scene this CLEAR then why are there so many completely hand drawn games instead?
Because of this, the Hidden Objects in this game look REAL. They also used LIVE characters, which AGAIN, if they have it in their arsenal why have we seen so little of it?
The actor playing the bad dude, Charles, was just an INCREDIBLE actor. I have finished HUNDREDS of games and to date, this guy scared me. WOW, AMAZING. All the Voice actors here were perfect.
NOTE: I STARTED TIMING THIS GAME AT THE LIGHTHOUSE FUSE PUZZLE, which I believe may have been part of the demo.
The Standard Edition- SE took me 7 1/2 hrs. from that puzzle. Much of the time though, is spent trying to bypass some puzzles that can't be skipped.
I first had trouble with the LIGHTHOUSE FUSE PUZZLE. I had it completed FOUR times....I was so frustrated when it wouldn't let me pass. Anyone else stuck here you need to go into the lighthouse trunk and OPEN THE INSTRUCTIONS for this puzzle first!
As I said there is NO MAP. The traveling is part of a puzzle on its own. Most puzzles can be skipped but some can't. The HINT is not helpful either.
Some gameplay, or story is seriously inappropriate, for most people playing I’d think, several times in this game, starting at the beginning when you enter a room with female dummies on beds. This whole section has things I just shook my head at in disbelief.
EXTRAS IN CE: I recall when this game first released at BFG in 2012 you would get a collectable MCF pin when you paid full price with this CE upon release. Big fish used to offer things like BFG MOUSEPADS if you bought a CE back in 2012 or other goodies, keychains, etc. I LOVED THOSE.
I am such a HUGE BFG fan I would pay full price for all CE’s just to get those specialty items. So now those aren’t offered, I don’t think the CE portion of this game is worth it.
SO WHAT YOU DO GET IN THE CE VERSION: The casebook you've been reading during the SE doubles as another little morph seek & find. The casebook is 39 pages and most have a morph.
There are no hints. There is none of the normal CE content… NO wallpapers, music, screensavers –nothing.
Finishing the Casebook Morph hunt opens a black & white, it looks like a coloring book page that has 19 hidden items. ALL BONUS GAMES TOOK ME 50MIN in addition to the SE full game.
So total gameplay, including bonus hunt took around 8 hrs total -from that lighthouse puzzle in act 1.
The SE is definitely better value for this installment of MCF. I had fun with this game but I feel there are much better games available on this site.
I recommend this game!

This is a copy of the review I left for the CE version. Just in case you want to know the upgrade to buying the CE instead.
**********May contain a spoiler****************
SE Gameplay TIME: took me 2 hr. & 45 min
BONUS Play TIME: took me 1 HOUR 15min
TOTAL TIME PLAYED = 4 HOURS
I do not think the CE is worthy. I suggest purchasing the SE, instead, if you liked the demo.
All in all this is an older, but beautiful gem of a game that I still highly recommend.
POINTS TO MENTION: This is an older game. It was released in 2012, and this was only the 4th installment of Haunted Hotel. Another DEV had control of it at that time.
Recently, I completed the demo for HH Silent Waters and found I was rather bored with that installment. Charles Dexter’s installment was still in my mind as a favorite in this series so I decided to complete it for a second time.
Initially, when I played this in 2012, I rated it a 5* in my BFG notebook. Re-playing it in 2016 it did lose a pinch of appeal for me and I would now rate it 4*.
This game does not hold hands. There are no bells in whistles, no custom mode and no jump map that have become the norm in newer installments. The skip takes over a minute to restore on mini games and the hint also takes a while to recharge. I always play these older games with the widescreen option “unchecked”. You will have a black bar on either side of your screen but it keeps the clarity and perspective better. There ARE little tricks I used to use back then to help with this type of game which I will mention below.
GAMEPLAY & GRAPHICS: The graphics are more computer gen and less hand drawn; which I prefer. The HOS are crystal clear and items look like they should because of the computer gen. graphics. The scenery is absolutely beautiful. Most of this game is spent in outside, in swampy locations. Many of the Haunted Hotel games look the same due to the fact you ramble around hotel after hotel in this series so it was so refreshing to not be in the same old, same old, interior drawn location. As the end of the Standard edition when the credits roll, this DEV actually produced LIVE locations which inspired the areas you play in. I LOVED watching these. Strangely, you CAN re-watch credits but not with the live picture locations.

HOS & Mini games: The HOS are all one step list type. The mini games are plentiful but unremarkable for the most part.
CUTSCENES AND VOICEOVERS: Deserve their own category they are that good. The cut scenes are LIVE moving pictures of real locations and items. I remember this was a technique most used in the games that came out around 2013. I assume it cost more to do this because it is so superior to clunky moving characters. Possibly it takes more time to produce cut scenes like this. What a shame because in ALL MY YEARS of being a member of BFG (6 years as of 2016) and I started playing these games in 2008, I have never seen anyone DISLIKE these live type movies or characters while reading reviews. In fact, every review I’ve seen that mentioned live actors or cut scenes has always been applauded. So I have no idea why they chose to toss a method that was SO EFFECTIVE in casual games. Mystery Case Files 13th Skull did a great job with live actors/movies as well. Too bad, you can’t re-watch these perfect cut scenes.
Your Female character has a perfect voice over and we hear it while the live movie is being narrated by her. I think there is only one other in the game.
MAPS, JOURNAL, AND HINT SYST: There is NO MAP. A tip is to really take note of the name of the rooms you are entering and leaving to remember where they are.
Another tip for older games,
**** Use the Walkthrough guide! The HINT tells you WHAT TO DO next, not where to go. The tasks you must complete are NOT indicated with sparkle. MOUSE OVER each scene you enter to find all items in a room to alleviate extra back tracking.
There is no journal in inventory but there are long notes you randomly find from 3 different people that were either in, or lost in this hotel. You can re-read them via the upper R of your screen. Each note has a page number. A LOT of time and effort was put in to these interesting notes that push the storyline. I was thrilled each time I’d get a new one.
BONUS PLAY: I can’t recommend the extra play. Every scene is inside a cave-like, dark location with evil drawings or carvings on the walls. I noted in 2012, in my book, how much I disliked the bonus in this game and felt the same my second completion of it.
You play in 10 scenes in bonus play, 7 are new and 3 scenes we have played in already during the SE.
Bonus play had NO story to speak of. Not only does your character not complete what she sets out to do, but it actually has horrible end.
CE EXTRAS: If I recall they are pretty much locked in the demo. Here is what you get.
-In game Walkthrough guide—that you will need.
-7 downloadable Concept Art, with no logo, and in my opinion- not worth saving.
-“THE MAKING OF” was a joke. It is 3 pictures of live scenery or items.
-5 DL music tracks. I saved these 2 themes titled “Charles Dexter Ward” and “Walking around”. The music is haunting, appropriate and beautiful.
-Bonus game play
- 30+ Achievements
OTHER GAMES TO TRY THAT ARE SIMILAR TO THIS:
1. Vampire Legends: The story of Kislova
2. Mystery Case Files: 13th skull & MCF Shadow Lake
3. Mystery of the Ancients: Lockwood Manor
4. Shiver: The Vanishing

NOTE TO DEVELOPERS-
As I mentioned, many of this series you play in INSIDE locations. The best thing
about HH Charles Dexter were the beautiful, but eerie outdoor locations. Like kids, I think most of us
play these casual games to escape for a while from everyday life. So escaping to a beautiful,
outdoor location is much more appealing than interior rooms that all look like a decaying hotel.

Thank you to everyone at BFG & all the DEV. I really appreciate you!!
I recommend this game!

**********This is the review I did for the CE version of this game. Obviously the bonus content doesn't come with the standard edition but in case you are on the fence to purchase the SE or the CE...... This may help.
****************MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS*******************
The SE portion of the game took me 4 hrs. 25 min.
The bonus play took me, 1hr 25min
Total gameplay 6 hr. 10min (I usually take my time, trying to complete the minigames & I always complete the HOS without hints.#
THINGS TO MENTION: This game was not as good as many I’ve played lately. The storyline was sort of all over the place and it felt unfinished. The color scheme they used is also kind of a weird mix of royal blues and pinks. The lighting was a nice addition to these colors though. The graphics, I thought, are good, not great. The end cut scene to the STANDARD EDITION was really fast and felt unfinished. No achievements, no replay of cut scenes, MG , or HOS.
SPECIAL INVENTORY ITEMS TO THIS GAME: 1. A helper, Mr. Jenkins, the Siamese/Himalayan cat and a Pair of Glasses that you occasionally align a small 3D sketched scene with them.
THE CHAPTER I LIKED THE MOST: Was probably Chapter 5. You play in a wintery area with some really beautiful scenes. I also REALLY liked the bonus game but the storyline was more fantasy based, and I’m not a fan of fantasy. The scenery was so pretty I didn’t seem to mind the weird griffin as much. Just after the “hand mirror puzzle” in chapter 3, you have a book in your inventory that turns into a perfect minigame. I’m surprised it wasn’t in the demo portion it is that fun. It looks like a pop-up book that you interact with.
FUN THINGS THAT DESERVE MENTIONING: In addition to the typical mini games that have a skip button, this game has some really easy additional games that really make the game enjoyable. Match type games & storybook, where you put the items back in to a scene are occasionally there. Chapter 3 has a great HOS, pg. 18 of wtg. Chapter 6 also had a great HOS that has floating items.
DIARY, HINT, MAP: There is no diary, and this game really needed one since every time you pass through a mirror portal the games story takes on a new theme it seemed to me. In with the map, there is an area on the lower right you can click that shows “notes” you have picked up but they seemed nonsensical when the story was all over the place any way.
CE BONUS CONTENT:
Most of it remains locked right on up to the end. There are only 5 downloadable wallpapers.
There is an in game 53pg, in game walkthrough guide & to give you an idea of how long the bonus play is compared to the DEMO, CHAPTER 1 IS 6 pgs., chapter 2 is 6 pgs. BONUS CHAPTER IS 11pgs.
Developers Diary is 17 live pictures of the Daily Magic team, and Mr. Jenkins,
Concept Art is 12 small images that you can’t save. This felt useless to me. I would have preferred at least 1 screensaver over non DL concept art & The “Cat room” had 15 items for purchase with the coins you collected in the CE version of this game. Only a few of the items would interact with Mr. Jenkins and the rest was just decorating.
ABOUT CE BONUS PLAY: This extra play had ALL NEW AREAS, rare, and all scenes were very pretty to wander in. But the story was really weird. You play 12 brand new areas in bonus. There were 11 mini games and 4 HOS, and more of those smaller easy type puzzles that didn’t require a skip button. Technically, there were only 2 HOS because both were repeated. First time you play a scene there it was list of 2 part items. The second time through the scene items were #dreaded silhouette type. It is so hard to tell what on earth any round silhouette is. I really can’t stand them.) The end cut scene to the bonus play was also abrupt and it felt like a book with a rushed ending that didn’t match the rest of it.
COLLECTABLES in the CE: There did not seem to be any collectables other than coins you picked up for a room that your cat can interact with. You can buy items for this room. Most of the items were really useless and had nothing to do with the cat. You could buy furniture, lights, wallpaper, flooring, etc. and I just wondered what the point was. In the game called Mystery Trackers 4 Aces, you had a dog named Elf you could buy items for and interact with too, but ALL the items were fun to Elf. There were not as many items to purchase but I enjoyed it more.

The SE portion of the game took me 4 hrs. 25 min.
The bonus play took me, 1hr 325min
Total gameplay 6 hr. 10min (I usually take my time, trying to complete the minigames & I always complete the HOS without hints.)

The SE portion of the game took me around 5 hours, 20min.
The bonus play took me, 1hr 30min Total gameplay 6 hr. 10min --I took off 40min for a mini-game I had trouble on.
The first thing I need to address is how beautifully done the characters were in this game. Instead of talking from the side of the screen with text, they have a moment of 3d while they come close to the for-front and they look so real as they talk. It was perfectly done.
The cut scenes and graphics are also clear, crisp and have gorgeous effects & deep, rich color.
First, you play in the present, then you have a time device that sends you for a chapter or so in Rome, then a chapter or so in Medieval times and the final portion of the standard portion of the game -they call it the Renaissance-- but it is actually a beautiful place with floating “animal islands” in the sky.
Chapters in Rome were a reddish hue, while chapters in medieval times were tones of teal & blue. The final area of SE play has gorgeous pinks and natural tones.
Chapter 4 has a storyline twist I was not a fan of. The SE portion ends quickly and leaves you hanging. Bonus play does not really completely answer or help this ending either as it is entirely another subject altogether. All of the Bonus play takes place in the future.... 2029, I believe.
You play 12 brand new areas in bonus. There were 10 more mini games and 5 HOS.
I have to admit, I wasn't a huge fan of the bonus level...as I prefer to play in outdoor areas and this entire level is inside.
You STOP collecting items at the end of the SE. So there are no more collectibles in the bonus play.
The game has a diary, a great portal task map, and a helpful step by step hint. Different to the inventory is a TIME DEVICE that will bring you to other locations as well as speeding up and slowing down time.
There is EVERY type of Hidden object scene is this game....we have morphs, lists, silhouettes, collecting more than 1 item, multiple step scenes...and this DEV is trying to cater to all of us.
CE goodies are:
19 wallpapers that save to doc file. You can replay 19 HOS & 12 mini games. Love a HO game that actually has more HOS then MG., 12 concept art, a statue page- for one of the collectibles, a puzzle pc page which looks like a stained glass window --- I was 1 piece off at the end of the game so I don't know if this does anything once you complete the puzzle, or not.
Bonus play took me 1 ½ hrs. There is a 12 question test to determine what age in history you might fit into. There is an Achievement and Artifact –showing more collectibles pgs. as well.
There is an in game 50pg walkthrough guide that I used several times to progress. To give you an idea of how long the bonus play is, CHAPTER 1 IS 8 PGS. BONUS CHAPTER IS 13PGS.
All in all I really liked this game. I am glad I purchased the CE. Enjoy the hours you spend in another place in history!
I recommend this game!

The Standard Edition/SE took me 6 hours
The CE bonus play took me 1 hr. 30 min
Total GAME PLAY OF THE CE for me was 7 hr. 30min. Long game.
SE Ending: Has a terrific WOW factor I won't ruin for you but, geez was it EVER....CLEVER!! The CE bonus play has you make a choice at the very end where either you save someone, or a book, which is technically a choice of helping yourself..... I kind of wished I had saved myself...and you will see why when you end the CE bonus. The SE, stands proud by itself though and doesn't need the bonus play to help the end.
BONUS CONTENT: I‘ve played these games for years & I have NEVER seen as much bonus content as this game. To say it is fully loaded is to put it mildly. I hope I list it all correctly, since its SO DESERVING of every penny you spend on it.
The other DEV need to see how this is done and offer the same.
1. SCREENSAVERS: There are 6, and it’s why I paid full price for this CE, great screensavers. There is one of the house on the pond scene that is so pretty/also a wallpaper.
Sadly, they DO NOT save to your doc file the way Elephant's do, so they will remove with game and you can't save them to disc. The scenes of these screensavers are: 1. main character ghost girl reaching out 2. The haunted legends house with a moon behind 3. Moonlit lake lodge, 4.ghost girl surrounded by candles, 5. a red eyed "bag monster" peeps up from bottom of screen, 6. Skeleton in the well, it’s raining.
2. WALLPAPERS- 10 save to doc file to use later. A lot of the same scenes of screensavers are also WP.
3. 18 PICTURES OF THE DEV- I love these, way better than concept art. Look for the t-shirt, uh oh!
4. CUTSCENES- 17 or 18 to view again
5. FACTS- 8 behind the scenes snippets of info. re: game choices etc. during the making of this game. LOVED THIS.
6. MUSIC- 3 savable tracks/ I didn't save.
7. BONUS PUZZLE: A bubble shoot mini game where you target bonus skulls to fill a progress bar. Due to my favorite of this type called "Sparkle" I'm a pro at this and I never filled the progress bar.
8. TEST: Test questions on the prior Haunted Legend games. I only got a 59%, yikes.... It then tells you what game you need to play.
9. SG planner: this 6 items you can look at closer. I really don't know the point of this.
10. MATCH CAT- you need all in game points for this, and I assume it has to do with the collectable cats in the hos. I must have missed some...I can't go back for.... because this remained locked on me.
11. 7 RECIPIES- They don't have words. Just hand drawn pics of how to cook the following: Blueberry banana bread, apple pie, cranberry apple cinn. cupcakes, strawberry captain crunch cupcakes, banana chock. chip cupcakes, & strawberry layer cake. This could have been a REALLY neat CE bonus but they seemed unfinished without how much of each thing written out....instead it is just a drawing of measurements with any direction. Maybe it's because I can't really cook that I couldn't easily read these. Also, it did not save to the doc file
12. STRAT GUIDE- in gm wtg 4 chap & bonus play :
Chap 1 is pgs. 2-8. Chap 2 pgs. 9-16 Chap 3 pgs. 17-25 Chap 4 pg. 26-32 Chap 5 /extra play is pg. 33-47 other choices/collections 48-52
13. EXTRA PLAY- chap 5... You play 13 areas on the map. 7 areas a NEW, 1 area revamped, & 4 areas from SE. I counted 7 mini games/ I skipped a lot, just not great ones. I counted 6 HOS, but technically 3 because they are the same scene replayed twice each. I wasn't a huge fan of this bonus play. I was actually checking the clock for it to end. The story was kind of started in the SE and finished here with the girl’s husband being a creep.
14.HOS & MG REPLAY- you can replay some of the SE hos again, there is 1 NEW hos, and 1 called "endless" hos... which I started and finished a scene then the same scene has a bunch of new list words. I never finished this portion.
Mini game Replay- 7 of 10 unlock at the end of the SE.
If I am honest, I have never been a huge fan of this series and only bought a couple of the games because I so disliked the dwarf that seems to be the main focus up until this, game 7 in the series. In this installment....the dwarf isn't in main game play, thank God, and yet the ERS still managed to do him justice and tie in the other games.
I am also not a fan of the cartoon like graphics…. I can just imagine how huge this DEV would be if it changed the graphics to clear, realistic graphics.
This CE IS WORTH the money. I hope I’ve helped you make the decision between the SE and CE versions.
I recommend this game!

*************May be a spoiler. I tried not to but just in case, I want you to know I will tell you the bonus that unlocks that you can’t see in the demo**************
