*To anyone new to the site: I've noticed it's always helpful to change the “SORT BY” just above reviews, to the option “NEW” on the game’s main page. I’ve noticed this is the option that has the most completed games reviewed.
The SE portion of the game took me 3 hours & 45 minutes
The CE bonus play took me, 1hr 22min
Total gameplay 5 hr. 7min
I actually used the stop watch on my cell phone whenever I was playing this. I try and do all the mini games but will skip them the second I’m annoyed. I do all the HOS without hints & with penalty. I play on “custom” mode. This game has EASY/HARD mode for all the mini games, which is a huge plus for me with Domini. I’m telling you how I play because it may be faster/slower for some.
Aside from interior locations the entire game is played in moonlit areas, at night, with snow on the ground. I loved that you don't have to carry items all that long so you remember where they go. They are usually used in the same room or the one next to it. It’s great that it only takes a moment to look over the scene to see where an item should be placed, WITHOUT opening the secondary window. It has many different types of hidden object scenes to cater to all of us and they are not repeated. The special effects didn’t wash out the scene. The graphics are vibrant and you play in beautiful locations.
When you open the task book area, there is also a notebook to check every now and then because it holds picked up notes to review the story. It’s a shame you can’t replay the cut scenes because they were worth re-watching.
So far, my favorite games in this series is MT #4 Her own eyes (you collect really amusing death files) and MT #6 The Hangman (which is remarkable because of the interactive details in every scene, the entire game, (not just the demo) you need to click every item in the scene and watch beautiful renderings of ghosts pop up here and there).
In this game, MT #7 The House of the Others, you only see these interactive details in the demo. Chapter 3 has one more… so be on the lookout for it. Though this isn’t my favorite game in this series, it is still a solid 5 star game with a remarkable CE bonus play.
DEVICE SPECIAL TO THIS GAME: are the “glasses” that alter the visual in a location and show our main characters spin on what happened in a location that can’t be seen, and in the past. We used them first in MT #4, 5 & 6, and I liked using them equally here. I love the ability of the character we play in the MT that has the glasses.
IF YOU LIKED THIS GAME TRY THESE:
1. Mystery Tales #4 Her own eyes, MT #5 Eye of the Fire, & MT #6 The Hangman. Gameplay is identical to this.
2. MT #3 The Alaskan Wild feels most like this game & is also played in winter at night with gorgeous borealis skies but it doesn't have the special glasses.
3. Whispered Secrets Everburning Candle
For anyone that cares, I did a review specific to what’s in the CE version under that game's page; in case you’re on the fence as to which version to get it has more information on the bonus play and collectibles & what they do.
Huge hugs to all of you at Big Fish, and Domini Games that created this great game!! I am one of your biggest fans.
I recommend this game!

WHAT YOU COLLECT & ITS ULTIMATE PURPOSE:
1. 16 collectable cards can be found in the main windows. I missed 2 in the game so idk if
you are rewarded for collecting them as you are in MT #5 (Eye of the Fire). Each of these cards has a historical blurb on the back about a mystical type of person such as Merlin.
2. 44 (I believe) butterflies are collected from the secondary frame windows and you buy items for a room with them. At the end, I only had 41 collected, but it was still enough to buy all the room’s items. The only item that actually does anything is the bird cage so I’m glad I got that item first. It would have been cool if the finished room turned into a wallpaper. I only got 41 of the 44 butterflies so I’m not sure if you are rewarded for getting all the collectibles here or not.
3. 15 morphing cursed items- These were rather large and easy to locate and are only in some scenes. They have their own page too and each item has a description when you click it.
I preferred the collectables in Mystery Tales #4 Her own eyes & I would have preferred a screensaver to any of these collectables.
ABOUT BONUS PLAY: The SE stands on its own from bonus play. The bonus story is completely unrelated. A pilot asks, you detective, to help him find two people on an island he hasn’t been able to land his helicopter on to save because a ghost has been intercepting. As the bonus progresses we learn who that ghost is and why he’s being naughty. The bonus play is fantastic and I’m glad I paid the money to play it.
There are 10 ALL BRAND NEW AREAS TO PLAY! Scene 4 of bonus has an adorable pug you help; he was just perfectly rendered.
From what I counted there were 10 more mini games and 5 more HOS. You CONTIUE collecting items at the end of the SE and into the bonus play.
STRATEGY GUIDE & TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA HOW LONG BONUS PLAY IS:
There is an in game 53pg walkthrough guide. Bonus play time compared to demo,
Chapter 1 is- 3 pgs. Chapter 2 is- 11 pgs. (& 1 sentence on the 12th pg.)
& bonus chapter 12PGS
IF YOU LIKED THIS GAME TRY THESE:
1. Mystery Tales #4 Her own eyes, MT #5 Eye of the Fire, & MT #6 The Hangman. Gameplay is identical to this.
2. Whispered Secrets: Ever burning Candle
Huge hugs to all of you at Big Fish, and Domini Games that created this great game!! I am one of your biggest fans.
I recommend this game!

I bought the SE and played the main game but not the bonus play. I actually completed it 9-18-16.
SE took me 3 hours & 10 min. (and the journal also holds the amount of time you play)
I had the stopwatch on my phone running while playing. I play on custom mode and try my best to complete the MG and I always finish the HOS (so you can figure against how long it may take you).
Generally, I love the darker, spookier type games and I'm a big fan of MHG. This is one of those games that is just better in the demo. The demo & chapter 4 were my favorite parts; I disliked chapter 3. My biggest problem with it was the shadow figures. They seemed comical to me, like Scooby Doo ghosts. They looked so cartoonish compared with the other characters in the game.
The end of Chapter 4 has another great slide match HOS like we see in the demo that was fun.
At the end of chapter 4 there is a great mini game I liked where you count squares on a chess board, moving the pieces around. The mini game after that was fun too, using the same chess board to open a door.
The first HOS of chapter 5 was remarkable & super fun. It is uncommon to see this type in games (Redrum from 2010 had a similar one) where it's in segments of 4 patterns each & 4 pattern blocks, you find the items with the same pattern. It should have been in the demo.
Chapter 5 Developer/mixer puzzle MG where you match 6 symbols then spot the differences in the developed pictures (2ea in 6 pictures). So fun.
This entire game felt very similar to Maze: Broken Tower. So try that one if you like the demo to this.
The main game has a good end that stands on its own. It has a couple of good battle MG at the end that were fun too.
I guess I would rate this a 3 1/2*. I did finish it, but I preferred all the other spooky games by Mad Head up to this one.
If you like this type of game, try Maze Subject 360. I liked that game better & would rate that game 5*.
I recommend this game!

BASED ON COMPLETED DEMO
Generally I'm a fan for this series; I own all the other ones but this one bored me. All the details I’m used to are missing & just weren't up to what I expect from Elephant (which is A LOT). I actually struggled to get through the entire demo.

I wasn't impressed with the characters... They looked cartoonish & I wondered what happened. Especially the photos we find here and there. All of them look like unfinished cartoons. Richard’s voice over was WAY too slow and hard to hear clearly with that voice adapter.
Many new players might not notice the things that are missing, but I suggest you go back and play GT #6 The Vengeance (7-2014) to see what I mean. GT #7 Color of Fright was also great (11-2014). These games had amazing cut scenes that pushed the story forward. Come to think of it…. does this installment have any cut scenes other than booting the game?
Even the shelves & items that sit on them for achievements weren't good. I've grown to expect what we see in Haunted Hotel Personal Nightmare which has beautiful CG moving items on the shelves or interaction in some way.
There is no Diary, nothing to hold picked up notes, & no way to review the storyline; only a useless task list I never use. The scenes are ALL interior except for the first, and all scenes are drab, bland, and not what I've come to expect from this DEV. Even the portal task map felt subpar to GT The Vengeance. This DEV maps are usually a work of art by themselves. The graphics could have been a crisper and more saturated like we see in the earlier games I've listed below.
The earlier Grim Tales have spot on voice overs, perfectly drawn characters, beautiful outdoor locations to wander in and incredible attention to details.
Go back to Grim Tales Bloody Mary for a better version of this game. It's also played in a boarding school. It has gorgeous scenery that you WANT to spend time in, and the grim factor is high. It has all the bells and whistles this game is lacking & has crisp saturated graphics too.
I hate to be critical but I’d rather the DEV hear from a club member that is constantly buying these games (and the CE’s to them) than to have said nothing and play another game like this.
I don't suggest this game... but I HIGHLY suggest these, instead-- they are my favorites in this series.
1. Grim Tales #3 The Wishes (older though-2012)
2. GT #5 Bloody Mary (2013)
3. GT #6 The Vengeance (2014)
4. GT #7 Color of Fright (2014)
I don't recommend this game.

• A note to people new to this site & reading reviews: If you toggle the “SORT BY” on this page, change it to “NEW” (& most helpful) I’ve noticed there are more reviewers in that category that have completed the full game and not just the demo—A lot of them will clearly show at the top “review on completed game” and I always find it so helpful.
The SE portion of the game took me 3:02 hrs.
CE bonus play took me 1 hour
CE secret room took me 8 min.
Total Gameplay was 4 hours & 10min
I play all of these games on custom mode. I complete all the HOS & try to complete the minigames but I’ll skip them if I become frustrated. I play at an average rate and run the stopwatch on my phone whenever I’m playing so it may take you more or less time.
I love how Elephant lets you turn on/off the "special effects" in options. I noticed when I had this setting off the scenes seemed clearer. I would occasionally switch it on/off mid game.
MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO MENTION:
~The main game ends quickly, but conclusively and is independent from the CE bonus ending.
~ There were some great mini games in this game. The demo has a (challenging) arial obstacle mg of a black horse and rider that was fun. Page 20 of wtg has one for James I loved; Chapter 4 has a great toy train one on pg. 25 of wtg.
~ You play in many beautiful and eerie, outdoor locations. You don't just ramble around inside the hotel rooms. One fear was loneliness. "Mountain Spiral Road" just nailed that feeling.
~ Jump scares: I LOVED these animations! Most were in the demo but they did continue right on into the bonus play. Whoever did the animation for these....just perfectly done!!! You got me, more than once!
~ RE: MAP- I didn't find this map all that easy to read quickly so I used the portal hint and the strategy guide instead if needed.
FAVORITE CHAPTER is #3 James’s chapter. I am such a fan of the handsome James and it was fun to see him again. We get to revisit a pinch of some prior HH in his chapter. The Axiom Butcher, Death Sentence, & The Phoenix are the ones that readily come to mind.
This game did not have replayable videos OR a diary, only a useless task list. I often play more than one game at once and one or the other of these things is so helpful. It was missed.
IF YOU LIKED THIS GAME HERE ARE SOME OTHER GREAT GAMES I'VE PLAYED HERE LIKE IT:
1. Harrowed Halls: Lakeview Lane (has keys for locked
fear doors too).
2. Sable Maze: 12 Fears (ea. chapter was a fear here too).
3. Bonfire Stories #1 The Gravedigger: (I had just finished
the CE to Bonfire when I bought this HH I
kept forgetting I was in a different game. It has the same
colors palette & great play/story.)
RE: CE VERSION: For anyone who cares: I did a much more detailed review for the CE version so if you want to know more about the bonus play or CE content… I listed another review on its CE page outlining the bonus story & things to look for in the CE.
Many thanks to BFG & Elephant Games for many hours of fun and a game I will replay for sure. You keep making them & I’ll keep buying them :)
I recommend this game!

~ COLLECTABLE ROOM FOR “PHOBIAS” (ce version) Important to mention, so you don’t miss out: Be sure to enter this page every other phobia or so because there are amazing animation visuals of each phobia just before each of these collectables. It would have been cool to just click on the statue & THEN see the little animation of the fear but for some reason the animation disappears leaving just a boring statue on the shelf. The animations for the clown, drowning & heights were just so incredible. I wanted to mention it here because I was sad I missed out on a few animations until I caught on they were actually disappearing.
FAVORITE CHAPTER is #3- James’s chapter. I am such a fan of the handsome James and it was fun to see him again. We get to revisit a pinch of some prior HH in his chapter. The Axiom Butcher, Death Sentence, & The Phoenix are the ones that readily come to mind.

ABOUT BONUS PLAY-
I preferred bonus play to the demo in this game as well and glad I bought the CE right out of the gate.
The actual bonus play has 10 areas of play and of those, 6 areas are new and 4 areas we’d played in the main game. There are 4 new HOS to play and 8 new Mini games. You start out in the bonus story as Steven Blake again but luckily you find your dad George’s diary in the front yard of the hotel (what are the odds) ;) Too funny. Thankfully, it was still where he dropped it (a decade or more earlier) and not even ruined by rain! Thank goodness, because we need it to go back in time to 1931 and play some truly beautiful areas of this game in South America, Greenland, and an Egyptian themed area I loved. For Tomb Raider fans, like me, this feels like "Lara land".
CE BONUS TABS ARE: (and what they do)- A lot of these remain locked until bonus play.
Bonus play, 41 pg. in game wtg, 10 wallpapers dl to doc file, 10 dl concept art with logo, 4 music dl, replay 12 mini-games & 16 HOS, Achieve. pg., Phobia pg. (see above),Secret Room- unlocks after bonus is finished. You find multiple morphs over 4 rooms from the game and you can beat your time. It took me just shy of 8 min., PUZZLE PG is collectable page for 4 puzzles that assemble themselves. From the amount of CE's I buy from Elephant, I am willing to bet these were supposed to be 4 screensavers. Idk why they weren't all screensavers but only one of them will “SET” as a screensaver. I was really sad about that, because they were ALL such cool moving pictures. But I still love ya Elephant! I just love horses so if I could only have one of these save, they picked the right one.
SCREENSAVER: This screensaver was worth it for me to buy the CE version (w-extra play too, of course). It's of that beautiful black horse you see in the demo. He is rearing, with the headless horsemen in a beautiful woodland scene with smoke billowing from his head. AMAZING!
ABOUT THE 41pg STRATEGY GUIDE (aka-wtg)
To give you an idea of how long the bonus play is compared to the demo- the demo was 8 ¼ pgs. & bonus play was 10 pages. I’m including each chapter’s pg. amount so you can gage how much gameplay is there.
CHAP 1- Frank 8 ¼ pgs.(demo), CHAP 2- Mary 4pgs.
CHAP 3- James 5 ¼ pgs., CHAP 4- Elizabeth & Kate 8pgs
BONUS PLAY- 10 pgs., other-3 pgs.
IF YOU LIKED THIS GAME HERE ARE SOME OTHERS LIKE IT:
1. Harrowed Halls: Lakeview Lane (has keys for locked fear
doors too).
2. Sable Maze: 12 Fears (each chapter was a fear here too).
3. Bonfire Stories #1 The Gravedigger: (I had just finished
the CE to Bonfire when I bought this HH & kept
forgetting I was in a different game. It has the same
colors palette & great play/story.)
Many thanks to BFG & Elephant Games for many hours of fun and a game I will replay for sure. You keep making these CE with screensavers and I will keep buying them! 
I recommend this game!

This game wasn’t as long as most. I play on custom mode and try to complete most the MG & all the HOS. I had my phone’s stopwatch on whenever I was playing. I play at an average pace and like to figure things out on my own, so it may be quicker/slower for you.
The SE portion took me 3 hours.
The CE bonus play was only ½ hour. The shortest bonus I’ve ever played.
Total gameplay (with CE bonus play)= 3 1/2 hours
Here are details about the CE version & bonus play in case you are thinking of picking that version over this one.
Achievements: I am not normally one that cares about these, but this game had some fun things on this page so be sure to check it out. One has a jigsaw puzzle to assemble; one has a quiz on the game. I missed a few so idk if there more fun things in this area.
There is NO MORE COLLECTING in bonus play. I missed a statue in the SE portion and there is no going back for it, so be sure to take inventory before ending the SE.
There are 7 areas of gameplay in bonus play; 2 are old and 5 are new. There are 3 more HOS & 2 more MG.
Story in bonus play: You are back at the campfire. Alex & Natalie are scared off when Daria goes missing. I play the same character (Nick- guy with the glasses) I played in SE and my mission is to find Natalie. The SE portion of the end of the game closes well and it is independent of the CE play. CE ending was fantastic and well thought out.
The strategy guide is 42 pages. To give you an idea how long bonus play is, the demo was 10 pages long (Chap 1 & 2) and bonus play is only 7 pages.
Chapter 3 (pg. 20 of wtg) has one of the best overhead maze puzzles I’ve done where you find one item to unlock the next and get out of the maze.
Chapter 4 into chapter 5 you play in a gorgeous abandoned park.
BONUS CONTENT -CE version: 8 DL Music tracks- I saved 2. “Bonfire Stories” & “Thoughts” sounds like Bonfire Stories as the piano version. These tracks were funky as to what was actually playing when I hit the “play” button, on my Windows 7 so make sure the actual track is playing by pausing and replaying.
17 wallpapers that save to your doc file, 36 Concept art (6 are storyboards) they can’t be saved, 9 statues of the characters you collect in the secondary windows, have their own page but there is no character description. A page for collectable paw prints. You can re-watch 26 videos and I personally re- watched them again every chapter or so to refresh the story. There is no diary in the game that holds story or notes, only a useless task list.
If you liked this game, I felt these were similar— (most are serial killer type games).
1. Harrowed Halls #1 Lakeview Lane feels a lot like this
one.
2. Campfire Legends: The Hookman – This series
is a trilogy (game starts the same where teens
are telling ghost stories around a bonfire.
I loved this series- but they are older games, made
around 2011, so they don't have portal maps etc).
3. Phantasmat #6: Town of lost hope
4. Haunted Hotel #11 The Axiom Butcher
5. Mystery Tales #4: Her own eyes
The only thing that would have improved this game is to make it longer and bonus much longer. Add a diary or something to hold notes, and a screensaver would have been enough ce content for me with the bonus play, in my opinion.
I loved this first installment and can’t wait for the second. Thank you BFG/Mariaglorum! This is my new favorite game by this developer.
I recommend this game!

This game wasn’t as long as most. I play on custom mode and try to complete most the MG & all the HOS. I had my phone’s stopwatch on whenever I was playing. I’m play at an average pace and like to figure things out on my own, so it may be quicker/slower for you.
This was a 5* game to me, but it was too short without enough goodies in the CE content. So I bumped the rating for the CE to 4* and will rate the SE version at 5* once it comes out.
The SE portion took me 3 hours.
The Bonus play was only ½ hour. The shortest bonus I’ve ever played.
BONUS CONTENT: 8 DL Music tracks- I saved 2. “Bonfire Stories” & “Thoughts” sounds
like Bonfire Stories as the piano version.

BASED ON COMPLETED DEMO
When I first started this M3 my initial reaction was how small the 8 sq x 8 sq grid was compared to the rest of the screen.
The graphics are SO pixelated that its a bit hard to read "menu" & "hint". I do play on a large monitor so that may be a factor.
I spent a good deal of time in level 1- 3 before I realized the little caduceus on the bottom was a bomb once it was full.

A couple of good things about this game.
1. The more I played the more fun it became for me.
2. Each level has a square in the center of the grid. In the first level its a wooden chest and you collect keys and when the meter is full you unlock the chest and obtain Pinocchio. He stayed in a colemn left side of game for a while. I found out when this game froze on me and I rebooted, there is a suitcase that holds these special items. Pinocchio had a small descriptive blurb to explain your collectable.
Level 3 had a patch of grass in the middle and you collect shears to cut the grass. Since I didn't exit the game again, I didn't see what that collectable was.
The voice actor is the type that overacts. It reminded me of a teen using a karaoke machine for the first time. Yea. Not pretty.
I listed 4 of my M3 favorite here at BFG.
1. Jewel Match- Twilight
2. Lost in the Night
3. Fishdom- Seasons under the Sea
4. Queen's Garden: Halloween (I play it every Halloween)
I thought, this is just an OK, M3 which is best played on a small device due to bad graphics.
I recommend this game!
