Starts off with so many cut scenes, you might just as well be watching a movie. Only two HOS in 40 minutes, but many puzzles -- basically one right after another. Two puzzles couldn't be skipped, but at least they weren't hard to solve. One of the HOS was the silhouette kind where each thing you find leads to the next thing.
There's an evil Mayor Murray. He's a fish man with an unhuman fish head. It irked me that his name is Murray. The mermaid-slash-siren is Calliope, a fitting name for a siren. But Murray for a fish? Please. I've known a couple of real-life men named Murray Fish, but neither of them had fish heads. Well, maybe one of them did look a little bit like a fish.
But at least they give you an actual fire hose to put out a fire instead of a tiny bucket, never mind that the hose shoots up the stairs by itself and then stands in midair like a cobra waiting for you to take hold of it. After the fire is out, it returns to the cobra pose. Must be an enchanted fire hose.
Speaking of putting out fires, how many games have you played that start out with a fire emergency? Of course, you have an injured buddy, a fish man with a nearly human head. He's the one who got you into this mess in the first place. You have to revive him with smelling salts, and next find some gauze to bandage his wound. I was surprised you didn't also have to find scissors and adhesive tape! After that, you come across the usual person-who-wants-you-to-bring-him-something, in this case, an blind old rummy. But forget him, because now you have to.get something out of a sewer drain, and figure out a way to open a mechanical gate lift.
YAWN.

Uninspired is a good description of this game. There's nothing either very good or very bad about it. Even the music is boring, unobtrusive, and nearly ignorable.
What you have here is a boilerplate HOPA with average graphics and voiceover, lots of back and forth (there is an interactive map), a missing boyfriend, suspicious characters, evil spirits, a mean snake, and yes, even the ubiquitous vicious dog that must be distracted with a bone. The puzzles are stale, the HOS uninteresting.
I found everything about this game to be standard and derivative. I won't be buying it.
I don't recommend this game.

This game is very different, even unique in my experience here at BFG. It won't be to everyone's taste, but so far I'm hooked and will definitely buy it at $2.99 as a COTW.
I have not had much trouble with the HOS at all, but I will say that the items are hidden in somewhat of a unique way (sorry, there's that word 'unique' again). Nevertheless, I'm enjoying them very much -- not just looking for the HOs but taking in the artwork of the scenes as a whole.
I love, love, love the red-tattooed arm and hand hints and powers! It reminds me of a series of vampire novels that I really enjoyed reading.
I believe the jerky cut scene motion and the voice looping that a couple of people mentioned may have been glitches that didn't show up for me. I have turned the voiceover sound down a little in the options menu, but I didn't want to get rid of it completely. The voices, along with the sound effects, definitely add to the weird atmosphere.
Congratulations to the developers for creating an eerily creepy, beautiful, and captivating game..
I recommend this game!

The beginning of the game was the best part. Based on everyone's reviews, I bought it, even though I had doubts after playing the demo.
When I got to Mars, the storyline indicated that the people she was supposed to meet had gone to an emergency meeting and she should get on the train and meet them there. But that's not what happened. I couldn't figure out why she was doing all this running around, even outside the dome, instead of going to meet them. Then come to find out, it appears everyone is dead, but she hasn't even gone to the meeting place to find out.
I then spend the next four hours using the map to know where to go next, with no expection of any logic to it. The HOS as usual with this dev are blurry junk piles, and some of the objects can't be found without the use of a hint.
Sorry, but I've just been clicking on the map and following directions. If I figured out where to go or where to use an object on my own, it'd be a miracle, and there are still at least half of the locations on the map that are still locked. Talk about discouraging. I've completely lost interest in finishing the game.
I don't recommend this game.

I bought this game last year (2012) and just finished playing it again. It's a fun game to play with an interesting story, plus it has an actual dénouement and a happily-ever-after end to the story. Yea!!
I recommend this game!

BASED ON DEMO ONLY:
The game is slightly glitchy, but restarting it solved the problem, so I was able to continue. I will report that in the technical thread.
The artwork is gorgeous. There is wide screen. Music is unobtrusive. The map is interactive. The HOS and puzzles don't seem to be stupendously difficult. The inventory bar can be locked open. Game play so far has been fairly linear.
One thing I do NOT like is that while the hints work in and out of the HOS, when using hints outside of the HOS, you still have to wait for the refill. Most games do not require any refill time for hints outside of the HOS.
A couple of things I noted that seemed a little silly:
(1# You are told by the resort manager that you will find the scientist in the garden on the other side of the gate. So why couldn't you just open the gate or use a key that the manager would give you? Instead, you have a solution that you use on the gate in such a way that it is torn down by vines.
#2) Why is the scientist so helpless? You would think she would know what has made the bear so angry and how to repair her own machine -- both of which are perfectly obvious to you and tasks that you perform while she stands helplessly by. If I'd been writing the script, I'd have given her some injury that prevented her from performing those tasks.
Oh, well... just a couple of small irritations. Most games have them. I will get this one.
I recommend this game!

BASED ON DEMO ONLY:
I almost gave up on this one after only a few minutes into the demo when the little doll announced itself as my "helper" in its tiny, little-doll voice.
Seems to be a HOPA with mostly A and very little HO or P. Limited HO is definitely a negative for me.
I really enjoyed the artwork, which is highly detailed and appropriate to the weird game milieu. Weird indeed. Apparently whatever happens in the dollhouse gets transferred to a bizarre alternate reality. Or it might be vice versa. Or it might be two alternate realities. Or three. ???????
There's a guy in a chicken suit that you have to rescue. Admittedly, there's probably something positive that can be said for a game that has a guy in a chicken suit.
Other than the artwork, here's nothing here that really knocked me out of my chair, as Valdy would say. Except for the train scene. You should play the demo for the train scene alone if nothing else.
I recommend this game!

Okay, so some folks might complain because the voiceovers don't include moving mouths. The acting was more than adequate, and the script was appropriate to the situations.
In spite of the "old-fashionedness" of this game, or perhaps because of it, I have had an absolutely wonderful time playing it!! You know, sometimes you want to read War and Peace, and sometimes you want the funny papers. Not that this game is exactly comparable to the funny papers, but you do revisit the HOS, and there are quite a few of them. Nor does it have the bells and whistles that some fishies seem to think they have to have in order for it to be a five-star game.
The storyline is interesting and had me hooked from the beginning. The artwork is gorgeous and sets the ambience so well that I actually shivered in a few places.
I don't play puzzles, so I can't comment on those, but the skip button charges reasonably quickly. Yea! The hints outside of the HOS are the directional arrow type, which I much prefer to the hints that tell you exactly what you need to do, or that tell you "nothing to do here." The journal notes actually were helpful for a change, so A+ for that.
There is the problem of translation. As an American, I had no idea what was meant by "jerry can" or "secateurs," and in one instance "boots" turned out not to be boots. But oh, well! At least now I know what those things are.
I bought it on today's DOTD, but I would've been just as happy if I'd paid full price.
I recommend this game!

This game has some of the most beautifully detailed and clearly executed art I've seen in any game. That does not mean that the HOS scenes are easy. They most definitely are not, but even on my laptop screen, they're not impossible. Challenging would be an apt description. If you like searching for hidden objects as I do, waiting for your eyes to adjust and something to suddenly pop out, you will love these.
The hint system is directional (yea!), and the hint and skip buttons fill quickly enough that I don't get impatient waiting to skip the puzzles/ mini-games.
The voiceovers and cut scenes are well done -- good acting appropriate to the character -- and the cut scenes are short and work to advance the story.
I knew within just a few minutes of playing the demo that this game would be a buy for me, especially with the twofer sale.
I recommend this game!
