In an exciting new game in the Off the Record series you are off to the Caribbean to cover a beauty pageant where the winner gets the biggest prize of all – a chance to wear the famed Liberty Stone, a gorgeous, mammoth-sized ruby. Unfortunately for you, you arrive at the pageant to interview the owner of the stone when one of the contestants is assaulted and the stone stolen. In a twist of events, it looks like you are being framed for the crime. You need to work against time to solve the case and restore your good name. The Liberty Stone is the story of a feud between two families that goes much deeper than the disputed ownership of the precious gem.
As always, this development team knows how to put together a great game with lots of visual appeal that is accompanied by excellent voiceovers that add to the overall package. I particularly enjoy the Caribbean sounds that set the ambience for the game and bring back memories of some special vacations I had in those wonderful islands.
While playing the game you will find the standard tools available with the additions of a tape recorder that will be used to play cassettes that are found as the game progresses. One of the tools that I personally appreciate and use the most is the interactive transporter-type map that this development team includes in its games. They are always helpful at providing a nudge in the right direction just in case I may have forgotten where I might need to use an item that I am lugging around in my inventory.
I always enjoy the HOPs from this developer as they are very interactive and multi-level and in this particular game the HOPs seem exceptionally well done and enjoyable. I always seem to find some surprise in each HOP that I come across which keeps things interesting. As is the case with many of you, I play a lot of HOPA games and look forward to the puzzles, and it seems like some of the puzzles in this game are a bit different than usual. Although the puzzles are not difficult, they are still quite fun and very entertaining. I happen to like math puzzles and have already found one of those in the game so I’ve been doing my happy dance.
As a final thought, IMHO, this is a great game. I am having so much fun playing with the scenery and the objects that might move or make various sounds when they are clicked. This developer adds so many little details to their games that make them a notch above. I love the feisty little monkeys that are playing in the various game scenes and lights that I can click that turn on and off again. All in all The Liberty Stone is a great game and one I am thoroughly enjoying. I know that many of you think the HOPA games are becoming very redundant but I am a hopeless fan of the genre and this developer is one of my favorites. I never seem to tire of playing their games. The Liberty Stone was an instant purchase for me but, as always, I recommend that you at least try the demo to see if this is a game you will like.
I recommend this game!

This is the second game in the Forgotten Kingdom series and The Ruby ring begins as the infant Prince Tristan (it looks like we play the game as the Prince) is being whisked away from the castle after his parents were taken by dark shadows. Naya, the young woman who saved you, has become your protector and raised you as her own. Now on your 18th birthday, you receive a ruby ring that belonged to your parents. As you open the box, it seems like the ring has some magical powers as it is floating and seems charged with energy.
The Ruby Ring offers a choice between four modes of gameplay: Citizen, Royalty, Legend, and Custom. If you select the custom mode you have the option to set hints and puzzle skips in a range from 10 to 90 seconds. There is no option to turn off the tutorial until you enter the actual game. Although the graphics are crisp and clear they seem somehow flat and at times cartoonish. There are voiceovers but no attempt was made at lip-syncing. The voiceovers are okay but the dialog is rather hokey, and because the characters just stand there as someone reads the dialog they seem even more ridiculous. In games that are very well done, I sometimes don’t even notice that there is no lip-sync feature but in The Ruby Ring, the lack of lip-syncing stands out.
Your tools include the ruby ring that will be used at times throughout the game. The first time it is used we have to complete a memory type matching game. Each time you need to use the ring there will be a different mini game to complete before the ring can be used to destroy the crystals that block your way. Along with the ring you have an interactive transporter type map that is present at the beginning of the game.
The first HOP was a silhouette type with absolutely no interaction required to find objects. The problem is that some of the items are so tiny it is very hard to locate them. I ended up clicking all over the scene just so I could discover an item, and since I didn’t seem to have a penalty for excessive clicking, I am guessing that there isn’t one. The puzzles seem more difficult than they should be simply because of the lack of information on what to do. Aside from the mini-puzzles when charging the ring, I honestly couldn’t make it through the demo to discover what other puzzles exist in the game.
Since most of the information is locked until we purchase the CE, I can only tell you that there are 60 crowns to be collected as we move through the game. Since it is very difficult to determine what CE content is in the game, I will not purchase it. IMHO, there is very little extra content aside from the SG and the bonus chapter, which isn’t enough to make me rush out and buy the game even with a sale. When BFG offers a two-for-one sale, this game would be a good option as a filler game.
Although the game might be fun and many of you may really love it, the game just didn’t ring my bell. As a CE release, I expected a lot more and even with a sale the game is, IMHO, no better than many standard games on the market. Because the game is not terrible and might even be enjoyable in the end, I probably will use one of my many accumulated PCCs to get the game when the SE is released. In the end the game is not for me. As always, I recommend that you try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy.
I don't recommend this game.

In this latest game in the Grim Façade series – Hidden Sins, fear is on the loose and his name is “The Avenger.” In what looks to be a more gritty twist on the Grim Façade series the game begins with a monologue by Fear and a series of slasher murders – ick!. I guess it will come as no surprise that once again we are a detective in BFG game land. Oh, and, BTW, I am seriously thinking of changing my resume – lol. After the initial cutscene we are in a carriage reading a note from the mayor of Coldstone, whose wife has been kidnapped by The Avenger. The mayor has found a blacklist of people who are being targeted and he needs our help. This is all very hush, hush so he sets up a secret meeting in a designated alley. Well I don’t know about you but I don’t think that I want to go meeting anyone in a dark alley with a slasher on the loose.
Technical Aspects of the game include four modes of play: Casual, Advanced, Hard, and Custom. I am not sure why the game devs don’t just go with the custom mode of gameplay so that everyone can set up options in the manner of their own choosing, but that is JMHO. If you select the custom mode and want to set your hint and skip times they vary from 5 to 200 seconds. The graphics on my computer are excellent and clear containing the wonderful hand-drawn artwork that sets this developer apart from many others. The sound package is great with exceptional lip-synced voice overs, except for the voice of the guard who I wanted to poke with a stick so he would speed up the pace. Getting back to the artwork, I love the “rough-around-the-edges cat” that the artists have created to perfection – personality and all. Although he technically isn’t my helper he definitely serves a purpose and I would sure love to keep him.
Your tools include an interactive, transporter type map that is present at the beginning of the game. You will briefly acquire an animal helper or two but they are not toted around in inventory, nor do we need to dress them. There is another tool that you will acquire that is used to put certain information together and I guess I will jump on the band wagon and call it a gimmick because that is exactly what it is. IMHO, it adds nothing to the game and, quite frankly, I would have preferred having that attitudinal cat as my only helper.
The HOPs include matching type, replace objects into the scene, and list type among the variety offered. Some of the HOPs require minimal interaction. The puzzles are fun with some a bit more difficult than others. None of the puzzles are overly frustrating and can be completed with a bit of thought and patience.
Included in the extras are the basics we generally find in the CE version of games. It is only my opinion that this distributor generally offers less in the way of collectibles but their games have a lot of content in general so the extras don’t matter that much unless you happen to like finding collectibles and earning achievements.
As much as there are some things I really like about this game there are others that bother me so much that I am not sure I will purchase the game. I have never been what I consider a “purist” when I find items that are out of sync with a game’s specific time setting and generally overlook them, but in Hidden Sins the faults are so glaring that it became annoying. I can ignore a few items being out of place in a game but in Hidden Sins the errors stood out so much that they detracted from the gameplay. Perhaps I am a bit idealistic but I believe that games should contain some informational accuracy. One of the most glaring pieces of misinformation in Hidden Sins is in identifying scurvy as a contagious disease requiring quarantine. I doubt that scientific opinion has changed in recent decades and I am sure that scurvy is still considered a disease caused by a dietary deficiency. Hidden Sins is so full of glaring “sins” that it is very unlikely I will purchase the game. It is time to go back to the drawing board and design games for intelligent gamers, who actually understand history and have working brains. As much as I love this developer, I have to say no thanks to this game. Because the above opinions are ONLY MY opinions, I don’t want to give the game a lower rating as there are many who will enjoy it for its gameplay merits. If one can put aside the sense of reality and the inconsistencies of the game, then it deserves the higher rating I will give it. As always, I suggest that you try the demo because this might be a game that you will enjoy.
I recommend this game!

Labyrinths of the World Forbidden Muse is the second game in the series and perhaps it should be the last. The premise of the game is that you are a detective who has been offered a permanent position with a top agency if you can solve a crime, so off you go on another adventure.
Forbidden Muse has excellent graphics and a decent sound package with lip-synced voiceovers. The game offers a custom setting that I happen to like since I enjoy being able to set my own hint and skip times.
Your tools include a transporter type map that shows where you have actions available. You also have a helper in the game, your harlequin, who was originally introduced in the first game of the series. Unfortunately, in order to get any help from Ms. Harlequin, who happens to look like the original Barbie doll, you must search for items in her wardrobe. Apparently Ms. Harlequin can’t work unless you locate just the right outfit for her to wear in order to do the job. Well that was the end of the game for me.
Because of the helper mentioned above and the rather disjointed storyline, I found that Forbidden Muse really isn’t a game that I will enjoy. I don’t mind helpers in a game but this one was more annoying than having a pet helper. BTW, there are pet helpers as well so it is doubtful that you can do anything in the game without help. It is only my humble opinion, but I believe the game would appeal to a much wider audience had the harlequin been left at home. As for me the game is one of the few HOPA games that isn’t my cup of tea. There was so much potential for Forbidden Muse to be an entertaining game and one that I could enjoy, but it was too annoying when I had to find a change of costume for my helper twice the first ten minutes of gameplay. Although I don’t care for the game, it might be one that will appeal to many of you. As always, please try the demo to see if this is a game that you will enjoy.
I don't recommend this game.

Thin Ice is the fourth game in the Danse Macabre series and seems to be a departure from the earlier games with an ice show dancer taking center stage. Yes, you are a detective who is called into assist the producer of the show whose star skater is being stalked by an overly ardent fan. It soon turns out that there is a deeper mystery and the body count starts mounting. Will you be able to work against the odds with an extreme blizzard causing additional havoc as you try to prevent more murders and stop the killer before he or she strikes again?
There is not a lot to say about all of the game's technical aspects as others have detailed those in their reviews. It has occurred to me that since I write so many reviews I seem to be writing the same review over and over again with only the developer and their talent adding something different to the mix. The developer of the series is one of my favorites and brings us some of the best casual games on the market but that is just my humble opinion. Although there is redundancy in all HOPA games, I am a hopeless addict who always manages to enjoy each new game I find.
The CE version of the game has a lot of collectibles, souvenirs and morphing objects that keep me happily entertained as I try to find them. The collectibles are fairly easy to spot once I knew what to look for but those darned morphing objects are far less obvious. I like to find them all so it is taking me a bit of time to get through certain HOPS.
The HOPs are fun and enjoyable being multi-tiered and interactive. The puzzles are not difficult but they are fun and that is what matters to me. I did have some difficulty with two of the puzzles because it took a bit to figure out what I needed to do – I guess I am brighter on some morning than on others – lol, so I had best get another cup of coffee.
Although the game starts off slow and seemed at first to be a bit boring, it soon picks up the pace and I found myself hooked on the mystery while trying to figure out who the killer might be. Although I have a lot of suspects, I haven’t figured it out yet and that keep the mystery going. Given the great graphics, entertaining gameplay and a great storyline, the game was an instant buy for me. As always, please try the demo to see if this is a game you might also enjoy. Happy gaming!
I recommend this game!

I know there must be a time that every kid wishes their parents would just disappear but when it actually happens it is frightening. When Carol awakens on the morning of her sixteenth birthday she soon discovers that she is alone and her parents seemed to have vanished.
This latest game in the Surface series comes to us from our mammoth friends who have created some really creepy games and this one is no exception as it definitely reminds me of a Grim Tales game from a few years ago – another series from this team. The graphics are excellent and, at least on my computer, are crisp and clear. The eerie sound effects are just perfect for this game. If I was in that orphanage, Allie is certainly not a kid I would choose to buddy up with on a scavenger hunt. All I can say is that the artists have captured her to perfection.
The tools in the game are basic and it seems like the interactive transporter type map is the only one we have except for a notebook. For just a brief time I thought I was going to acquire a pet helper but that turned out not to be the case as "my pet" soon left.
The HOPs are varied with some having minimal interaction at times. During the demo the HOPs included a silhouette type, matching type and a standard list type. Although the first HOP seemed very cluttered, I didn’t have any difficulty spotting the items.
The puzzles are very easy and minimal at best. I am hoping to find a more complicated Rube-Goldberg type puzzle later in the game since our mammoth friends are very fond of those type puzzles. Keeping my fingers crossed that the puzzles become more difficult as the game progresses.
As with all the other Surface games we will collect flowers that are found in each scene. Aside from collecting flowers and the “Secret Room” I didn’t find many extras that would make this a CE worthy game.
I found the storyline to be very interesting and possibly one of the best in the Surface series. I couldn’t wait to see how the story plays out so the game was an instant purchase for me. I want to know more about Allie – who she is and why she is the “demon” child that she appears to be in this game. The storyline actually seems to be a departure from the other games in this series and that is okay with me; although I am wondering why this one actually turned out to be a Surface game when it would have been an excellent addition to that other series. Maybe the reason will become apparent as I play through the game. Even though I really like this game and think it is excellent you might not agree with me. At any rate, as always, I recommend that you at least try the demo to see if this is a game you will like.

Okay, I know it is cheating but I am finding the integrated strategy guide quite helpful with spotting some of those darned collectibles that I just can’t seem to spot as they are very cleverly disguised. I am having a lot of fun just looking for them, along with spotting those elusive morphing objects. Yes, some of the morphs are rather glaringly obvious but others have taken a while to find.

Fame Fatale is a tale of two Audrey’s one of whom covets fame, fortune and that granddaddy of all awards – that longed for golden statue. Explore this tale of glamour, deception, and murder as you play this great whodunit mystery from our epic friends.
The graphics are excellent with the same art deco design and scenery of the previous games in the series. When I see a game from this developer, I know that everything will be top-notch, from the graphics right down to the smallest detail of the sound package. I love the way this game has been presented both in graphics and sound.
In Fame Fatale you will have the standard inventory bar with an interactive, transporter type map for instant movement. If you choose certain modes of gameplay your map will also indicate areas where your current tasks are available.
There are various types of interactive HOPs, some are the standard list type and others are silhouette type. No matter what type is presented they are done with flair and that special epic touch. If you have played other HOPA games from this team then you know what to expect. If you are not familiar with their creative genius you are in for a treat and I am sure you will be delighted with the variety that you will encounter. Although there were not too many puzzles in the demo, there was one that I found very challenging and fun. It took a bit of time and I finally skipped it since I didn’t want to chew up valuable demo time. The other puzzles were quite good and not just the same old thing we usually find.
The CE version of Final Cut Fame Fatale has a plethora of extras to keep you busy as you look for morphing objects, collectibles and hidden symbols. IMHO, the most valuable part of the CE version is the integrated strategy guide that is there to get you through those tricky moments when you need help solving a puzzle or simply to find what your next step in the game should be.
In the end, this is a spectacular game and, at least for me, probably the best of the series. Fame Fatale has captured my interest, not only in the story but with the gameplay itself. Thumbs up and kudos to this creative team who has presented a wonderful new HOPA adventure for our enjoyment. As always, I recommend that you at least try the demo to see if this is a game you will like.

Yes, Detective, once again your help is needed since strange events are occurring in the village of Montafleur, France. Not only have you been called in to investigate, it looks like you will join forces with your old friends the Red Riding Hood Sisters who are currently in the region.
Gosh, I hate to say it but the graphics in the beginning of the game seem so cartoonish that I am afraid they might be a put-off for many lovers of the Dark Parables games. Fortunately, that flat look doesn’t last long and things improve quickly. I have always loved the Dark Parables games and their developer who offers slightly tinted tea, so I was a bit disappointed to learn that the series is now a joint effort with another top developer. After my initial disappointing reaction to the last DP game, I quickly learned that this is indeed a “match made in heaven.” These two developers have combined the best of their creative teams and now bring us the new DP games that, IMHO, are technically improved while still maintaining the artistic genius of the series.
One of the best things about the new Dark Parables games is that the map works. I rely on the map when I get stuck and can’t figure out where to go next and it is a joy to have a map that functions as it should and that allows me to effortlessly skip from scene to scene.
What would a Dark Parables game be without those wonderful FROG scenes? The only thing I miss is the opulence and richness of the FROGs in the earlier games in the series. A bit of the luster has disappeared but in some respects it is a bit easier to spot the fragments needed. Many of the puzzles are a departure from the norm and I found one or two to be a bit more difficult but still doable.
If you like all the extra goodies in the CE games, you will find them in Queen of Sands. IMHO, there are plenty of collectibles to find and don’t forget to look for those parable pieces that will unlock mini parables as you progress.
The Dark Parables are always wonderful games and I own them all. I have been eagerly awaiting the full release of Queen of Sands and it doesn’t disappoint. Just as I was getting into the game the demo ends with a cliff-hanger so, of course, I had to hit the buy button. These two terrific game developers have presented a game with an excellent storyline and all of the features that I look for in my games. Although, many may disagree with my love of the Dark Parables games, I believe they are some of the best games to be found. Even though I rushed to buy this wonderful gem, as always, I recommend that you at least try the demo to see if this is a game you will like.
I recommend this game!

Let me begin my review by saying that I purchased the CE and absolutely loved this game. It took me several days to finish it and I enjoyed it as much by the time that I finished as when I began. It is so unusual for a game to hold my attention for days but this one did. What a terrific game!
When I first did the beta test for Reflections of Life: Equilibrium, I wasn’t sure about the game since it seemed far too busy with graphics that were just so over-the-top fairy tale and inundated with those tones of pink that I really dislike. Then when the game was released I decided to give it another chance, which turned out to be one of the best gaming decisions I’ve made in a long time. There is really no need for me to go into the story line or set the stage since other reviewers have done a good job with that so I am only going to tell you what I think.
As I attempted to evaluate why I initially felt the game was overly busy, I had to accept the fact that in more recent games of the past year or two we have been conditioned to games where each scene might have one or two active areas at most, which is certainly not the case with Equilibrium. Recently games have become very simple with gameplay being almost automatic: find this, use it here and then move on to the next scene. Yes, there might be a puzzle to complete or a HOS thrown in but most times the games seem very easy and don’t require a lot of mental effort. With Equilibrium the developers have created a phenomenal game where we have multiple things to do in each scene and often it is not readily apparent what must be accomplished before moving forward. It didn’t take long before I was totally immersed in the challenge that is Equilibrium. This development team has presented a creative and totally awesome game that is so different than what we normally expect to find in the HOPA genre and I am hooked.
The HOS in Equilibrium are quite different from those we find in almost every other HOPA game and I loved them. Even though we are still finding hidden objects the presentation is excellent. I find the game refreshing, challenging and quite unique given the creativity this development team has used in creating what I think is a phenomenal game.
Reflections of Life: Equilibrium now has my vote for best HOPA game of the year. I am so happy that my initial thought about the game turned out to be wrong, and I guess that when I am wrong, I am really very wrong. Equilibrium is truly a ten-star game among a world of many five-star games. All I can say is kudos to this awesome and creative development team for an outstanding game that is truly at the top of the list. Well done developers!!
I recommend this game!
