Puppet Show the Arrogance Effect is game number eleven in the series. You play the game as a reporter who has picked up a prime story to investigate the mysterious disappearance of residents after a meteor strike creates a massive crater not far from the town’s center. Not only are people disappearing but those who witness the disappearances are missing as well. When you arrive in town it quickly becomes obvious that your presence isn’t wanted. Someone has ordered the hotel manager to get rid of you and your photographer immediately and to destroy any photos or evidence that you might have found since you arrived. After your photographer is kidnapped, you find yourself on a mission to save him and to find out who or what is pulling the strings to hide a secret that lies deep within the crater.
Technical aspects of the game include: Excellent graphics with beautiful hand drawn artwork. When you begin the game you get to choose your character. There are four modes of gameplay to choose including a custom mode. In the custom mode hints and skips can be set in a range of 5 to 200 seconds. An integrated map that is present when you begin the game. Yes there is a helper but I happen to like this one even though I am sure many of you will hate her squeaky little voice, I didn’t notice that she makes too many sounds during the game. I know that many of you are really tired of helpers so it is terrific that some developers offer the option to either use or not use a helper in their games. Unfortunately, you are stuck with the helper in this game.
During the demo there were only a few HOP scenes and one of them was more like a puzzle. The first HOP was a traditional list type that was slightly interactive. I have always enjoyed the HOP scenes from this developer mainly because I like their hand drawn artwork. The items were not difficult to spot although a few of them were tiny. The puzzles in the game are mostly easy but quite a bit of fun. Okay, there are some of those manual dexterity puzzles in the game that I don’t like – the ones where we must use our mouse to trace through a specific shape. Sometimes I do okay with them but I struggled with the one where I needed to mouse through a horseshoe shape so had to skip it. Because I like most of the puzzles this developer usually includes in its games I am sure there will be a good mix and something for everyone to enjoy.
If you prefer the CE version of a game this one includes: collectibles to find and achievements to earn. Other extras include the standard fare such as wallpapers, concept artwork, music, videos, a bonus chapter and a strategy guide.
Many gamers (myself included) think the Puppet Show series should have ended years ago. Even though I have been disappointed with the last several games in the series, I am always willing to give any game a try so I forged ahead and tried the demo of The Arrogance Effect. By the time the demo ended with a cliffhanger, I was so wrapped up in the gameplay that I knew I was going to hit the buy button. The storyline is interesting and even though the gameplay is fairly easy I found it very entertaining. Many of you might prefer a game that is a bit more challenging but I can still recommend the game to a variety of players from the beginners to those of us who are fairly expert at playing HOPA games. I think the game holds something for everyone and I recommend that you at least try the demo to see if Puppet Show the Arrogance Effect is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming!
I recommend this game!

Does Finn O’Connor truly see a banshee in the audience of his dance performance or is it just his imagination? This is only one of the questions you must answer as you play this excellent new Danse Macabre game – Curse of the Banshee. Curse of the Banshee is the eighth game in the series and from what I played in the demo, it promises to be an excellent game. Because I really want to know about Finn’s relationship with the woman in white the game is an instant buy for me.
Technical aspects of the game include excellent graphics and realistic voiceovers and soundtrack. There are four modes of gameplay including the custom level where hints recharge in a range of 10 to 120 seconds and puzzle skips can be set in a range of 10 to 400 seconds. Your tools include an interactive map that you acquire early in the game.

The HOP scenes are varied and excellent although there is nothing new. I found the scenes interesting to play and very well crafted with maybe a few new touches. However, if you don’t enjoy searching for items in the HOPS, there is an alternate match-3 game available. The puzzles were excellent and included some that I haven’t seen before. It is always fun to come across a puzzle in a HOPA game that is something new because it presents a new challenge to the game. Even though many of the puzzles are those we often see, they are still fun to solve. Generally when I play a demo I will use the skip button if I don’t want to chew up time but I didn’t skip any puzzle during the demo this time. Some were entertaining so I didn’t mind chewing up the time. There are a couple of puzzles that I really enjoyed – one was getting the dance steps in the correct position and another was to repair a wooden bridge. The game includes 14 HOPS and 19 puzzles.

If you prefer the CE version of a game, this one includes: Collectibles and Morphing objects to find, as well as achievements to earn. The remainder of the extra content is fairly standard with a bonus chapter, 37- page strategy guide, wallpapers, concept art, music, replay of HOPS and puzzles, and a souvenir room.

Sometimes the Danse Macabre games are hit and miss but the last two games have been quite good. I think that Curse of the Banshee is one that I might enjoy more than the others in the series. I rather like the Irish theme to the game and the folk tales that may evolve during gameplay. Even though I am sure this will be a game I will enjoy, please try the demo to see if this one is for you. Happy gaming!
I recommend this game!

Eve Glover is back and this time she has been called to explore an excavation site in the Montana Foothills that had been shut down twenty years earlier due to an earthquake that made the site unstable and unsafe for further investigation. Now that the site has been deemed safe the University has requested that Eve, a renowned archaeologist, continues the excavation to see what she can find. Well, I guess it should be no surprise that what Eve finds is even more than she imagined and will take on a journey into this latest game in the Amaranthine Voyage series, the Burning Sky.

Graphics are a mixed bag with them most times being crisp and clear but then there are some scenes that seem almost grainy. For the most part the graphics are very colorful. The game offers four modes of gameplay to select when setting up the game – Hatchling, Fledgling, Mature, and Diverse (Custom). Hints 10 – 120 Seconds and skips: 10 - 400 seconds. Tools include a map and an Ancient Artifact

HOPS were usual but I am noticing that the items in the scenes are becoming much more indistinct and difficult to find. This could be due to an effort to make the games more difficult but the danger is that it is making the HOPS frustrating and tedious. It would be nice to see a blend that will keep those who want more challenging HOPA games happy as well as satisfying those who play for relaxation and enjoyment. I know it can be a fine line to walk but people like me might stop buying games HOPA games when items are too difficult to find. I’m not saying every item has to be jump-in-your face easy to find but there has to be a realistic blend. However, in this game if you don’t want to search for items or find them too difficult to spot then there is an alternate bubble-popper game available.
From the demo it seems that there is a good blend of puzzles with some being more challenging. There are some puzzles that are creative and different from those we see consistently from this developer and I applaud their efforts to keep most of us happy – particularly those of us who play virtually every HOPA game to come our way. There is an idol placement puzzle early in the game that had me scratching my head because I simply couldn’t figure it out. When I get the full game I will take my time and work through it until I get it. I really like that particular puzzle and believe there will be others ahead.
CE Extras include: Collect 30 Dinosaurs, 22 Achievements to earn, 12 Wallpapers, 5 Music Tracks, 12 Movies, Replay 21 Mini-games and 13 HOPS, Souvenir Room, Strategy Guide – 36 pages, and a Bonus Game. I did not find any morphing objects in the usual places in HOPS or in the various scenes. It seems like in recent months this developer has been cutting corners and slimmed down their extra content. The games are also becoming shorter. Perhaps there is too much pressure on this once top-notch developer to produce far too many games per year. Whatever the reason, the quality has slipped considerably so many of you might wish to skip the CE version of the game.

There are some things I enjoy about this game but the storyline was a bit confusing. Even though the demo ends on a cliff hanger, I didn’t care for the way it ended. Amaranthine Voyage has not been a favorite series but I did enjoy the last game – Winter Neverending. The Burning Sky has a lot of potential but the demo was so short that I felt like I was just getting into the game when it ended. Even though the storyline initially seemed confusing, I love the concept of a once technologically advanced culture now living in a prehistoric world. Because there are some interesting puzzles and because I want to see how this storyline plays out I will definitely buy the full game. As always, I recommend you try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming.
I recommend this game!

This Halloween is going to be memorable and one when a Sorcerer, imprisoned in a sphere centuries ago, will finally escape to unleash his wrath. What makes this Halloween so special is that it occurs along with a super moon and a lunar eclipse so now the stage is set.

The sphere that imprisons Felix is locked away in the University of Magic so when he escapes the students soon fall prey to his appetite for magical souls to feed his diminished energy. Of course Anabel is studying in the school’s library and calls Jack when she realizes what is happening. Unfortunately Jack arrives a bit too late only to find Anabel lying unconscious and soon must watch as Felix pulls her through a portal. With Anabel now out of reach, Jack calls on his shape-shifting friend Bertha and her special abilities to help him overcome the obstacles in his path. Playing the game as Jack, will you and Bertha be able to save Anabel and put an end to Felix’s desire for world dominion?
Graphics are consistent with those in other games in the series and rely heavily on the use of blue and purple tones. Aside from the color palette that I have come to detest, the graphics overall were okay. I am not sure if it is only because I am using a Windows 10 OS at present, but there is a lag between scenes where I get the “blood moon” graphic. Although there is a slight lag, I would prefer a black screen rather than that graphic. Perhaps other users might not have that issue. There are four modes of gameplay to choose from when setting up the game. There is an interactive map that I think is excellent because it indicates when the collectibles have been found in each scene. You do have a “pet” helper (at least when Bertha is in her Ferret form).

The HOP scenes are creative and I found them enjoyable to play through. My only complaint is that the scenes are a bit too cluttered and the items are at times very difficult to spot. If you don’t want to hunt for items there is an alternate matching game available. The puzzles are sorely lacking in this game and so unmemorable that I often didn’t realize I was into a puzzle. If you like more challenging puzzles, then this game probably is not right for you.
In the CE version of the game you get to look for collectible puzzle pieces that will then be used to complete various picture puzzles. Each scene also includes morphing objects and some of them are difficult to spot. Other extras in the game are the standard fare such as achievements to earn, wallpapers, music, bonus chapter, etc. If you are new to playing HOPA games I recommend the CE version of the game because it includes the strategy guide that will prove helpful at times.
The earlier games in the Witches’ Legacy series were terrific and I eagerly awaited the release of each new game, but this new generation has left me cold. In reality, by the time Lynn and Edward finally triumphed over the Witch Queen, I was fairly done with the series and found it quite boring. Although I have purchased all of the newer games in the series (mostly when there was a two for one sale), I haven’t played more than the demo portions of those games. I honestly gave Covered by the Night a fair chance but I have lost my appetite for the series and simply find the games boring. For gamers who are just discovering the world of HOPA games, I think you might enjoy the series because the developer includes so many special details in each game. My recommendation is that you at least try the demo to see if Witches’ Legacy Covered by the Night is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming!

Formit is a Tetris like puzzle game but the puzzle pieces to not drop from above. Each board or level is a grid that must be filled with the pieces that are located on either side of the board. If you are a fan of Tetris you might love this game but for me the HUGE drawback is the timer. The game does not provide an option to turn off the timer so even though the game is interesting and there was much that I liked, I will not buy a game that does not have a relaxed mode of gameplay available. If the developer had included an option to turn off the timer, then Formit would have been a game where I quickly hit the buy button. I also would rate the game as worthy of 5-stars but, unfortunately, I will deduct 2-stars because of the timer.
If you like racing against a clock then this is a puzzle game you will most likely enjoy. Happy gaming!

Spirit of the Ancient Forest has been sitting in my Game Manager and since it was a bonus punch day I’ve spent some time going through some of the games I had downloaded and, happily, I tried this one. I am a huge Clutter fan and own all of those games. There is something different about Spirit of the Ancient Forest that sets it apart though and maybe it is the music or simply that I find the objects easier to spot.
There is a relaxed mode if you don’t want to play beat the clock which made this one a definite purchase for me. Others have done a terrific job with laying out all the details but I simply had to jump in and let you know that this is a wonderful puzzle game that would be a great addition to your HO and puzzle library. If you haven’t tried it yet, please try the demo because you might find this game to be a pleasant surprise. Happy gaming!

The Dark Realm series makes its fourth appearance with Guardian of Flame, but as you play this game you begin to wonder if this will be its last. In ancient times the great mage Erasmus managed to defeat the Dark Lord and imprison him deep within a chasm, which he then sealed. To ensure that the Dark Lord would never escape, Erasmus had a great dam built then flooded the entire area. Strange events are now occurring and Queen Valera is seeing changes in her amulet that are a definite cause for worry. The situation becomes dire after consulting with her aunt Lassa who confirms that a great evil is about to emerge. Now Queen Valera must do everything in her power to save her world and her people. Play this new Dark Realm game to see if Queen Valeria can survive the ultimate test of her abilities. It will take all of your resources and power if you are to win this battle.

It goes without even having to mention that the graphics are excellent given the quality that this developer strives to attain with each new game. The soundtrack at times seems almost epic and adds to the overall feel of the game. Gameplay modes include: Egg, Hatchling, Wyvern, Dragon, and Hydra (Custom). Hints and Skips can be set in a range of 1 to 90 seconds depending on your preference. Your special tools include the interactive map and an amulet.
Although I enjoy the puzzles in HOPA games, I am a true HOS lover. Mad Head has created some wonderful HOS for Guardian of Flames that show just how incredible this team can be. I LOVE the HOS far more than I do the puzzles in this game even though there are some equally terrific puzzles with one or two being a bit diabolical. Normally if I don’t care for a particular puzzle in a game I will hit the skip button but some of these puzzles are so much fun that they almost demand to be played. Overall, I would have to say that the HOS and puzzles really make this game for me because I am not thrilled with the storyline of another dark evil looking for world dominion. Yeesh! Please get over this theme already.
The CE version of the game includes 30 collectible puzzle pieces, 13 morphing objects, and 30 Treasure Hunt items to find. There are achievements to earn, wallpapers, concept artwork, music, a bonus game, and strategy guide. It is difficult to know what CE extras are available unless you purchase the full game and even then the full array is hidden until you complete the bonus game. In the future I certainly hope that BFG requires the developers to actually show the full array of extras without a gamer having to purchase the game. I said this same thing last week and IMHO, when this information isn’t readily available gamers will most likely wait until the SE version is released. Most people wouldn’t dream of buying a new car unless they knew what extras were included, so why should buying the “special” version of a game be any different? Wake up marketing department and insist that there is full disclosure on the CE releases of games.

The game is very good and once again highlights the creative genius of the Mad Head team. As I mentioned above I love the HOS but I am really so done with this dark theme that has been overdone and should be buried somewhere, anywhere but in another game. There are so many possibilities for other storylines and if any developer can lead us in another direction, I am sure it is this one. I long for more sci-fi games or even good old-fashioned mysteries. There is a whole universe out there developers, so why don’t you pick something new and bring us an exciting and different theme in the coming year. Simply because I am a game addict and because I enjoy the HOS and puzzles, Guardian of Flame will be added to my gaming library. Please be sure to try the demo to see if Dark Realm Guardian of Flame is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming!

League of Light Edge of Justice is the 3rd game in this series where we have our little scarecrow buddy – a helper that I absolutely love. We first met our little scarecrow in League of Light Wicked Harvest: a game with 74 5-star reviews. It was a game I loved and one that I have played several times since its release in 2014. Edge of Justice is a retelling of the Pied Piper of Hamelin a theme that is popular with game developers. We now revisit the city of Hamelin in a game that I love. The story is extremely well-told and leads the gamer on an interesting journey to discover the truth and to find out why a mysterious piper is bent on revenge and is now punishing the people of Hamelin. You play as a detective from the League of Light who is following clues to find information on how to restore your young scarecrow friend, Tom, to his human form and that search has led you to the famous town of Hamelin. While there you encounter a mysterious piper who is unleashing fury upon the citizens of the town. Using your detective skills will you be able to restore peace to Hamelin and put an end to the chaos. Hopefully, you will also find the time and the information to remove the curse from Tom.
The graphics are my favorite style using hand drawn artwork rather than those highly polished computer generated ones that have been used in recent games by other devs. Tom is created to perfection and I enjoy his antics as he completes several tasks for me throughout the game. It is fun to equip him with various items from my inventory that he will require to carry out some of the tasks he performs. Something many gamers will really like is that the developer gives them the option to use a helper or not. I am not always a huge fan of helpers in a game but Tom is one of those that I simply can’t resist as are Mr. Jenkins and Elf.
I happen to love the HOP scenes and puzzles in the game. The HOPS are very creative although not really new. I don’t generally care for the storybook type but there is one in the demo of the game that I find enjoyable. The HOPS vary in style as is generally the case in newer games. While the HOPS are terrific, the puzzles might seem a bit easy for some but I enjoyed them since I don’t always care for brain-numbing puzzles in games.
After playing the full game I felt the game was as good as I initially thought it would be. The game probably took me longer to complete than it might others because I play slowly and work to complete all of the puzzles. I imagine I must have spent about twelve hours in total to finish the game because there was so much to accomplish. In the end I thoroughly enjoyed the game and hated to quit when real life required my attention. If you decide to give this one a try, I hope you enjoy the game as much as I did. Happy gaming!

This latest game in the Myths of the World Fire of Olympus is the tale of Prometheus and his daughter Lysandra. Prometheus has done the unthinkable and stolen fire from the Gods and given it to Humans, a crime punishable by death. Rather than killing Prometheus, Zeus instead decides to make an example of Prometheus by chaining him to a rock at the end of the world where he can watch his daughter struggle as a mortal. Lysandra, banished from Mount Olympus now must struggle against Zeus’ wrath to save her father as well as herself.
Graphics are excellent but the voiceovers are not that terrific at times.
Gameplay modes – Mortal, Hero, Demigod, and Olympian (Custom)
Hints: 10 - 120
Skips: 10 400 seconds
Tools include your map as well as what remains of your power now that you are a mere mortal.

Since others will provide the details of the HOPS and puzzles, I will only say that I found them to be quite different and creative. As much as I enjoyed the HOPS, I LOVED the puzzles that not only are fun to play but they are different than those we always see from EPIX.
By now most of you know what to expect when it comes to Collector’s Editions and the developers rarely depart from what is to be included most CEs. Fire of Olympus does include collectibles but I didn’t find the normal morphing objects that this developer normally includes in its games. There are most of the other expected extras including the strategy guide and bonus game and don’t forget achievements.

In the past year I have become quite bored with the Myths of the World series but feeling rather bored, I finally sat myself down to play the beta for Fire of Olympus. What a terrific game! I was thoroughly engrossed as I played and it was quite a surprise when the beta ended. Fire of Olympus has a very good storyline with some wonderful gameplay features. Yes, there still is a certain amount of hand-holding as you make your way through the game but for me the creativity of the HOPS and puzzles are what made the game. Most often when I see a new “tool” that lives on the inventory bar, I almost groan since I know there will be some lame puzzle that I must complete before it is ready to use. However, I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed the puzzle attached to using my “Frost Power”. Not only was the puzzle to charge my power entertaining, it was a bit challenging as well. After playing the beta, there was no question in my mind that I would buy the full game as soon as it was released. This morning my wait is finally over so now I am going to put my feet up and play this excellent new “Myths of the World game to see where my path leads as I battle Zeus, try to survive, and do what I can to save my father. Happy gaming!

Glass Masquerade is one of the most gorgeous and relaxing games that I have played in ages. Mosaic puzzles and games are among my favorites but Glass Masquerade stands out because I am not rushing around to either beat the clock or to complete a story.
The game itself provides little to no explanation or help when getting started but it really isn’t difficult to figure out how to proceed. There is a very brief tutorial when starting the game but that’s about it. Others have explained the mechanics of the game so I won’t go into how to play each level. Since there is no detail in the brief tutorial it is difficult to determine if there might be more than one puzzle in each country visited so I wish the developer had been a bit more forthcoming about how many total puzzles are in the game. Without that information being provided Glass Masquerade might be a short game if each country has only one puzzle to solve. At least for me each puzzle is so beautiful that I simply want to enjoy it as I place the pieces around the clock, and to enjoy the soothing soundtrack as I play. It was so rewarding to see the end result when I completed a puzzle because the whole graphic was simply beautiful.
It would be terrific to see more of these puzzles from the developer in the future and hopefully they will include a bit more information and help for those who want to know. Kudos on a beautiful and relaxing game that I love. Happy gaming!
