Our Ominous Objects investigator, Leia is back along with her furball buddy Mr. Jenkins. There is foul magic afoot in the Cursed Guards as the retired Duke of Braunschweig obviously has too much time on his hands and has indulged in an obsessive search for some cursed armor that was long ago created by a deranged and evil king. It is said that the king had four sets of armor created that were imbued with evil magic and then gave them to his four loyal champions to control his kingdom after his death. A good knight who was pure of heart managed to destroy the evil knights and had their cursed armor buried in different locations, thus putting an end to the reign of evil terror and restoring peace to the kingdom. Having found the missing armor, the old Duke has now released terror once again in the realm. It now becomes your task Miss Leia to destroy the risen knights and save the kingdom.
Great graphics and sound along with some fun gameplay make this game a keeper for me. Even though I am not a huge fan of pet helpers in games, Ominous Objects simply wouldn’t be the same without our feisty feline helper. Fortunately, Mr. Jenkins is not used overmuch in the game and when he is; his antics are endearing and entertaining. Your tools (aside from Mr. Jenkins) include an integrated map found early in the game that will help you navigate quickly to areas where you have available tasks.
The HOP scenes are nothing new but some are creative. I’m not a huge fan of the storybook scenes and there is one that I found very difficult as the items to be found were almost invisible. I must have used the dreaded hint button four or five times to make it through that particular scene. Many gamers are older and monotone shade of gray scene becomes frustrating rather than fun. My eyes are very good and I still struggled to find items hidden on that misty gray statue. On the other hand, I found the puzzles entertaining and very enjoyable; with none being too difficult but at the same time adding to the storyline and gameplay fun.
If you happen to prefer the CE version of a game, this one includes Collectible Cards and Morphing Objects hidden throughout the game. Achievements to earn, Wallpapers, Concept Artwork, Music, a Dots Game, Developers Diary, Bonus Chapter, and Strategy Guide.
After playing the full game I can say that this is one of the best games I have played this year. I enjoyed the gameplay and ridding the kingdom of these restless knights. IMHO, The Cursed Guards is the best game in the Ominous Objects series. I know the theme is fairly much the same but I am an avowed HOPA addict and love playing each new game. There will be cries from those who say “same ole, same ole” but my response is, if you feel that way, why bother? The premise for HOPAs is always the same – find objects, use them and save someone or something, with a storyline thrown in for good measure. The storyline is very good in the Cursed Guards and I can recommend it as an excellent game if you happen to love HOPA games as well.
You play the game as Alice, a young girl who is now living on the run with her Uncle Colin. Alice has been blessed or she might even think cursed by the Mark of the Firebird after she found its egg in a chest one day. Since then all has changed. Alice’s father was killed and now she and Colin are moving on once again after she thought they had found sanctuary. Colin has been having recurring nightmares in which he sees a woman calling out to him for help and Colin knows that he must find her in order to save himself as well. Colin confesses to Alice that he is missing the memories of several years and knows this woman must be a part of them. Continue the story of Alice and Colin in this second game in the Darkness and Flame series.
I love games from this developer and buy each new one as it is released knowing that I will find a great deal of enjoyment with each new game. This developer still knows how to create an excellent gaming experience and certainly gives us a lot of “bang for our buck” when purchasing the CEs.
IMHO, the graphics are excellent and show some improvement from the original game, Born of Fire. Alice has an updated look in the game now wearing shorts instead of a mini skirt – lol. The game includes an interactive, transporter type map that is divided into “tabs” and each segment indicates where there might be collectibles or morphing objects to be found. Your firebird is ever present and can be used to protect you when danger is present.
HOPS are interactive and I am thankful to finally see some diversity in the scenes. Yes there are still the silhouette scenes but I am a fan of the old-school list type HOPS so I am happy. The puzzles or mini-games are quite good and some seem different and even a bit more challenging.
This excellent CE game includes a plethora of collectibles that include 5 different sets of items to be collected – Dog Statues, Road Signs, Scorpions, Golden Pinecones, and Mushrooms. Each scene in the game includes one type of collectible as well as a morphing object. The remaining CE contents is fairly standard with achievements, bonus game, strategy guide, wallpapers, concept art, videos, music, bonus puzzles, replay of mini-games and HOPs.
I love the storyline and the gameplay even though the gameplay is a bit easy. I purchased the game as soon as it was released and so far find the game terrific. I am very happy to see that the developer continued the story of Alice and Colin so we can learn more about Colin and his past. Even though I love this game, please try the demo to see if it is a game you will enjoy. Thank you BFG for bringing us this excellent CE game on a Tuesday.
Oh my, shocking! This game is probably one of the worst games ever to come from a developer that I consider to be close to the top of my favorite developer list. They have created some terrific HOPA game series such as Witches Legacy, Fear for Sale, and Mayan Prophecies. I think it is a move forward that they are looking to develop a new series but somewhere this game The Spectra World, went off the rails big time.
To be honest I could play very little of the game and found it a struggle to get past the smoky eyeball orbs. The game could not hold my interest and when a blue fox tells me I must go through a portal to Spectra in order to save my family it was basically the end for me.
I am sure that others will do far more comprehensive and better reviews of the game than I but suffice it to say that this The Forgotten Fairy Tales should be forgotten! Many of you will have far more patience than I with those horrid black eyeballs and I must congratulate you. To one of my favorite game developer I must say I am sorry but you really need to go back to the drawing board on this one. Perhaps I would not have been so harsh or even disappointed with The Forgotten Fairy Tales had I not been in a frenzy of expectation of what I thought would be a much better game for today. What a disappointment to see this abysmal release instead. My final words for this review must be to please, please try the demo because you might find something that you really like in The Forgotten Fairy Tales the Spectra World.
Urban legends and creepy ghost stories are just perfect for a night in the forest around a blazing bonfire that is until someone decides to tell one of those stories that might actually be real, or is it. Play this creep fest new game and find out for yourself just how real the legend of the Faceless Gravedigger might be.
This game is perfect for those who love decaying, dusty, and dark scenes full of cobwebs and broken furniture but I am just not really into that sort of thing right now so even though I think that many will find the Faceless Gravedigger to be a terrific 5-star game it isn’t my cup of tea. I happen to love this developer and find that most of their games including the League of Light and Mystery of the Ancients series are terrific. So just because I am not a fan of these graphics does not mean that this is a horrid game, only that it is one that might not be at the top of my list.
I found the HOP scenes to be creative and interesting in presentation so most of them were quite enjoyable to play. I found only a couple of puzzles early in the game but both were excellent and not the ones that we see all of the time. There were some good puzzles included within the HOP scenes as well - such as the one where we must locate the missing items to repair a fountain and then once they are found we have a fun puzzle to reconstruct the mechanism.
Overall the gameplay seems very basic and easy – find some broken items with missing parts and then find them very quickly in the same scene or maybe the next so there is not a lot of challenge in the gameplay. Yes there is that dreaded broken zipper that I think most devs include simply because they know that most of us groan when we see it – lol. I personally found most of the fun came from playing through the HOPS and solving the puzzles.
The CE is woefully lacking in extras so if you are one who wants a lot of extra content this might not be the CE for you but there is that in-game Strategy Guide if needed.
Even though I love games from this developer and think that this is an excellent game, I really don’t need a creepy storyline with decrepit and decaying images in the scenes. I really want colorful graphics along with a great storyline right now so the Faceless Gravedigger is not the right game for me today but it is one that I will undoubtedly enjoy on a different day. I do recommend the game for those of you who love a creepy scare factor with you games because then this might just be the right game for you. Happy gaming to all of you in BFG Land!
Wow, and in this case it is not a good wow but one that says I can’t believe how terrible this latest game in the Reflections of Life series really is. A series that I once loved has fallen to a low that I can’t believe. It is as if Granny has terminated its original game designers and started with new developers and, this is certainly not an improvement.
I’m not even sure where to begin in describing this game but will only say that it is so terrible I struggled to make it through the demo. The storyline (or lack thereof) is told in bits and pieces with dialog that is so terrible I really don’t want to go further than the demo.
The graphics style has totally changed from those in earlier Reflections games and they are not a good change. The graphics are so terrible and cartoonish that it seems like the game was farmed out to middle school students to develop as a school project. Add really bad dialog and horrible voiceovers to the mix and the game becomes painful.
There was no creativity in the game except for the very last puzzle which was excellent. However, given the lousy graphics and artistic design of the game even that puzzle isn’t enough to entice me to buy the game.
Since the game is a CE release there are collectibles to find but they are so well hidden and non-descript that I was only able to find one during the demo. I want finding collectibles to be fun and not so difficult to find that collecting them becomes tedious.
My very short review of this game will end here. Others will provide much more information about the game but, honestly, this one will end up in my recycle bin. I want my old Reflections back. Hopefully, the devs will go back to the drawing board and look at what was so successful in earlier games in the series and bring back the good stuff. I definitely recommend that you try the demo before you buy - who knows you might see something I don't in the game and will really enjoy it.
In this new Dark Dimensions game Vengeful Beauty, you play as Edward Jones who has a lot of experience with unusual phenomena and dark dimensions. Your friends Linda and Carter who are part of a research and rescue team at Vanderleigh Institute have called on you to help them investigate missing people and the unusual growth of flora in Oldforester National Park that is run by the institute. When you and your friends arrive you encounter a problem with huge vines that attack you and your companions. During the attack you fall from a cliff and must treat your injuries before you can search for your friends, a task that will test your abilities as you deal with another “dark dimension.” Your friends are in obvious danger but will you be able to rescue them in time?
The graphics style is excellent with some gorgeous hand drawn artwork. On my computer the graphics are very crisp and crystal clear. There is an interactive map in the game but you do not acquire it until you overcome some initial obstacles.
The HOP scenes are excellent and very well designed. There are several storybook style scenes and they are different than usual and very creative. Although I don’t generally like the storybook scenes I found myself enjoying them a lot, particularly the scene in the Park Visitor Center. Some of the scenes include a combo of the storybook and list types. This Magic team has stepped-up and created a new Dark Dimension that I find terrific. The puzzles are varied and I find some challenging, although doable by taking my time. Of course there are easy puzzles as well but I think there is a good mix between the easier and the more difficult puzzles.
If you prefer the CE version of a game this one includes Collectibles, Puzzle Pieces (that I found difficult to spot), and Morphing Objects to find. Of course you can earn achievements as you play the game as well. The more or less standard extras include Wallpapers, Concept Art, Music, Videos, Bonus Game, and a Strategy Guide.
A few years ago I began to dislike the Dark Dimensions series and wasn’t eager to beta test the game but as the game’s release drew near I decided to give it a try and was definitely surprised that I found myself enjoying the game. It seems that this Magical team has reinvented itself and has recently produced some excellent games. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the full game today and am so thrilled with Vengeful Beauty. Since not all gamers enjoy the same things, please try the demo to see if this latest addition to the Dark Dimensions series is one you will enjoy.
The Kingdoms of Tar had been ruled for centuries by magicians until Carven Tar-liss who led the white magicians finally won the battle. After Carven Tar-liss declared himself Emperor and banished all evil magicians from the kingdom, the people now live in peace and prosperity.
You play the game as a healer who was rescued as a newborn by Emirus Klein from a dark ritual that took the life of your mother. Dr. Klein, founder of the Medico Imperium, has raised you as his own son and now you are a certified white magician and a healer. Dr. Klein has urgently summoned you to the Medico Imperium because your skill is needed to fight a mysterious illness that is turning people to trees. The kingdom’s Empress Patricia, who became ruler when her father died, is now suffering from the illness and needs your help. We soon learn that there is a battle for power as Patricia’s brother plots her downfall.
Enchanted Kingdom A Dark Seed is one of those games that starts off very slow as it seems bogged down with so many little tasks to accomplish. Although the game is off to a slow and sometimes tedious start, it improves greatly towards the end of the demo. Hopefully you will stick with the game for a bit before deciding that you might not like it because, IMHO, it is really a terrific game if you happen to enjoy a good fantasy game.
The game has gorgeous graphics although some scenes might be a bit dark but that too improves after the demo. The game offers a custom mode of gameplay that seems standard in most games now but I like the one from this developer. Your tools include an interactive map, your Healer Kit and Diagnostic Lens that you will use to determine the cause of an illness and then mix the appropriate potion to heal your patient. You also have a helper in the game – a Magic Bird that is given to you by Dr. Klein.
The HOP scenes are excellent and include a variety of styles. Although there is nothing new here the scenes are well designed and enjoyable to play through to find the item I need to continue in the game. If you are not thrilled by trying to find the required items an alternate match 3 game is included in most of the scenes. I love the puzzles in the game that include the option to choose either an easy or hard difficulty. Some of the puzzles were ones that I loved particularly one where we need to complete a mural in order to enter a secret chamber. I tried solving the puzzle on the hard mode but ended up changing to the easy mode which still took quite a bit of time to solve. I actually love the puzzles from this team because they are creative and generally fun to solve.
If you prefer the CE version of the game this one has a ton of collectibles to find. I really like the way this developer sets up the collectibles in each scene as there are circles attached to the inventory area that will indicate when there are collectibles to find in a scene. Collectibles include Crystals, Busts, Artifacts, and Notes. A fun touch is the 14 cupcakes you get to find and eat (talk about sugar overload) as you move through the game. For those of you who achievements there are so many to earn that they will surely keep you busy. The other extras include the Strategy Guide, Bonus Game, a Museum of Medicine, a Zoological Garden, a Gallery of Famous Doctors, Wallpapers, Concept Art, and Music. IMHO, Enchanted Kingdom A Dark Seed includes a terrific package of extras.
As I mentioned above the game starts off slowly but picks up momentum towards the end of the demo. I love fantasy games and this storyline is different and interesting. After playing the full game I think that this is one of the best games I have played in quite some time. The game is very long (at least for me) and took several days to complete. I highly recommend this game because it is not obvious what will happen and who the villain might actually turn out to be. I always recommend that you try the demo since we all have differing tastes in games. As always, please try the demo to see if The Enchanted Kingdom a Dark Seed is a game you will enjoy.
Mark of Death is game number five in the Chimeras series and all I can say is that it is a letdown for me given that Tune of Revenge the first Chimeras blew me away. Perhaps it is the art style of the game that I don’t like since it seems to rely more on computer generated graphics but I prefer the hand drawn artwork that once was in all of the games from this developer. Perhaps I would have been more enthusiastic had the game not been called Chimeras because IMHO, none of the subsequent games in the series have lived up to the initial release. Yes there is a theme of revenge in Mark of Death because someone is obviously targeting those involved in the prosecution and death of a presumably innocent man.
The game seems to have far more puzzles than it does HOP scenes or at least it seemed that way since I couldn’t progress in any scene without solving one puzzle after another. There is some variety in the HOPs and most of the puzzles are very easy, although a few are a bit tricky. There is a lock slider puzzle that is excellent and it is one I loved.
If you prefer the CE version of a game, this one has all of the usual items with collectibles, puzzle pieces and morphing objects. The remainder of the CE package is fairly much the standard fluff.
If it were not for the fact that I was so blown away by the first Chimeras game I might have enjoyed Mark of Death a bit more but unfortunately for me none of the newer games can hold a candle to the first offering in the series. If you enjoy easy gameplay where you find an item and use it rather quickly with easy gameplay, puzzles, puzzles and more puzzles then this game is probably just right for you. Unfortunately, I think I will pass on this one. Please try the demo to see if Mark of Death is a game you will enjoy!
Music competitions can be deadly as you soon learn when you play this new Danse Macabre game – Florentine Elegy. You play the game as a student of the famed Maestro Benedetti who is one of the leading composers in Italy and you are very fortunate to be his student. Even though he is at times arrogant and self-absorbed, he is like a father to you. When he is murdered after a competition you become the prime suspect and face death by hanging. One of Maestro Benedetti’s long-time friends Maestro Tonelli comes to your rescue and helps you escape from the prison. As you search for the killer you find a tangled web and have no idea who you can trust. Will you be able to navigate the streets and alleys of Florence as you search for answers and find out who really is behind the death of your beloved teacher?
Florentine Elegy has beautiful graphics even though they sometimes appear a bit misty but I think that it is intentional. The characters seem to be a bit cartoonish early in the game but do improve. Your only tool is a map that is found early in the game and at least during the demo there is no special amulet or animal helper so you are on your own to solve the mystery.
The HOP scenes are very familiar but well-designed. Personally, I found some of the HOPs to be very tedious because the scenes are junk piles and the required items are very small, muted or well-hidden. Fortunately some of the HOPS offer an alternative game rather than searching for the items. At one time this developer created beautiful HOPS that were excellent because the items were larger and much easier to spot. The puzzles were nothing new but I really don’t expect developers to constantly come up with new ideas. After playing HOP games for well-over ten years I have seen most of the puzzles and still enjoy solving them. Some of the puzzles in this game are easy while some have a bit more challenge. There are a couple of puzzles included that I skipped right away since they are ones that I don’t like and won’t waste time trying to solve them.
If you prefer the CE version of the game Florentine Elegy offers the following goodies: collectible grape clusters hidden in each scene, morphing objects found in HOPS, strategy guide, bonus chapter, concept art, wallpapers, music, replay of HOPS and puzzles, play Match 3, and the souvenir room.
Florentine Elegy has an excellent storyline that is so full of twists and turns that it took me a bit to figure out why Maestro Benedetti was murdered and who was behind the recent murders of other musicians. Even though I found the HOPS to be a bit tedious, I did enjoy most of the puzzles and found the full game even better. The storyline was even better as it developed and I was so surprised to find out who the bad guy was in the game. In spite of the difficult HOP scenes, Florentine Elegy is a game that I enjoyed and even though there are only four chapters each is quite long. As always, I recommend that you try the demo to see if you will enjoy this seventh game in the Danse Macabre series.
In Labyrinths of the World the Devil’s Tower you are on a special journey to help your sister Margaret with her initiation as a member of the Seekers. Upon arrival at the famed Devil’s Tower (yes, the same one from my favorite sci-fi film about “Close Encounters”) you find a message from Supreme Seeker, Takh Taash, advising you that an ancient evil god, Sanderion, has found his way through a portal to Earth and is going to destroy it just as he did Takh’s planet Fractal-S. Facing imminent danger, Margaret’s initiation must be completed immediately if earth is to be saved. As we all know in BFG game land, things will soon go awry and Margaret is kidnapped by Sanderion so now rather than initiating Margaret into the order you must save her as well as prevent Sanderion from carrying out his evil plans. Whew, just another normal day in the life of a Seeker! The scenes in Devil’s Tower are gorgeous and since I have to gawk at everything I see the game will probably take me a long time to complete as there are 5 chapters and a 56-page Strategy Guide. We have quite an array of tools available during the game including the Spectral Oculus that is used to locate portals and the Seeker’s Amulet that will allow passage through portals once they are found. Yes there is a pet helper in the game (something that doesn’t usually annoy me) but I question why the developer chose to add a talking horse that seems rather out of place given the storyline. Without going into any detail since other reviewers give you the full info, I will just say that the HOPS were varied and seem much the same as those we always see in HOPA games. There is an alternate Match 3 game available if you don’t want to search for items. The puzzles are quite good and I appreciate the inclusion of a choice between Easy and Hard for most of them. Although I enjoyed most of the puzzles in the demo I have to say that I dislike what I refer to as hide and seek games as I travel through a maze. Since I don’t like this type of puzzle the skip button becomes my best friend. Other puzzles I happen to enjoy and I really liked most of those included in the demo.
If you happen to prefer the CE version of a game, this one includes Collectible Pearls, Artifacts, and Morphing Objects to find .The pearls are plentiful and fairly easy to spot but the morphing objects and artifacts are not quite as visible. Since I am a bit driven when it comes to collectibles, I appreciate the area on the upper right portion of the inventory bar that shows when the various collectibles are available. Other extras in the game include achievements to earn, wallpapers, concept artwork, music, videos, a Seeker’s Lair where you use your pearls to purchase items for the room, the strategy guide and a bonus chapter.
Labyrinths of the World is a series that I happen to enjoy and in this game we get to visit the Devil’s Tower. The gameplay is fun but fairly easy. The storyline is interesting since your sister is stepping up and will soon become a Seeker but we all know that trouble seems to follow Margaret, so maybe not. Needless to say, I will add this game to my collection because I don’t think I can ever possibly have enough HOPA games to play. Even though this game is a definite keeper for me, please try the demo to see if you will enjoy the Devil’s Tower.
