Exactly. What? And if you purchase this game, I don't believe you'll ever find out.
Rich, noble girl has a fling with a journeyman, far beneath he,r status. Father finds out and forbids, FORBIDS DO YOU HEAR, them from ever seeing each other again. Young poor man indentures himself on a ship, arms flung out to his love, promising, swearing even, that he will find a way to make his fortune. He jumps ship - into the vast ocean and what should occur? He finds a treasure chest full of bounty. He buys his own ship and ..... End of story. Nothing else happens. Nothing comes through during the levels, between the levels, after the levels, nothing, nada, zip. So, if you want to find out the ending to this story, I guess you have to make it up in your head.
Now, as to the match 3 game. It's ok. Nothing grand or stupendous and, at times, can be a bit challenging. There are bonuses for matching 4 or more like items. There are levels that will take you upwards of 15 minutes to clear. There are bonus levels periodically wherein you flip the tiles and match the fishies.
So, that's basically what you get. Not a purchase for me ONLY because of the story. I would have greatly preferred to have it continue but I guess the devs of this game had other ideas.
I will, however, recommend this game to anyone who doesn't give a hoot for story lines or a fun game. Have at it.
While this game WANTS to be like a mahjong game - it is sooo NOT one - lol - it's different, unique, dare I even say better?
Here's how the game plays - hold on to your hats because it WILL sound confusing - sorry inadvance:
There is a game board on your screen. There are tiles all over it scattered throughout the board that are your typical mahjong tiles. That's where the difference ends. You have to pair 2 like tiles together and clear the screen by doing so. Sound easy? It most certainly is not because, unlike mahjong, everything is laid out on a flat "table" and not in layers. So, you can't work from the top down, etc. to get your "free" tiles. You are working on a flat surface AND trying to make pairs with "free" tiles that are, sometimes, even impossible to make.
Tiles that are next to each other, even in the middle of the board, are considered "free" tiles and can be matched (yes, even with all those other tiles around them. Tiles on one side of the board can be matched with tiles clear on the opposite end - IF it's considered "free". And, what may seem "free" to you .. guess what? Probably isn't. The game is timed (short bit of time - well it seems that way) and there's this annoying beeping noise when it's close to you needing to make a pair or you lose a life. Lose 3 lives and game over and you start AT LEVEL 1 AGAIN! There's also only "normal" setting.
I recommend you play the "practice" section of the game first. It is timed, just like the actual game and it does level up as well. There's a bonus game between levels (but I don't understand it - I understand the playing of it but not the explanation "if" you win and that's a BIG "if").
I tried to play the regular game and lost every time on level one - LOL - and only got to level 3 on the practice game. It's addictive and challenging, very challenging....extremely challenging.
I mused purchasing the game...it's got me THAT hooked but I'm pretty sure (well, reasonably sure) that I don't want a game I'm going to be stuck in the practice mode forever - lol. Who knows, maybe. Uh oh, I hear it calling..................................
Yes, you have to make pairs of tiles - free tiles - and that's where the similarity between this game and mahjong ends.
I would recommend to begin with that you keep the tiles set to "buddy" and the background set to "random" - there are just way too many choices. And, trust me on this, you need to familiarize yourself with this unique game first.
IMPORTANT - this little IMPORTANT bit of info was NOT forthcoming and I had to figure it out. Hold the right side of your mouse down and move the tile layout any which way you want. This will make sense once you're in the game.
You will want the "buddy" tile set because it's hysterical and you will need giggles and hysteria to get you through the impossible matching game play.
Yes, pick 2 tiles and match them. 3D, HD madness. Red tile, google eyes, laughing mouth, no problem right? EXCEPT, the left eye on one may be large and on another it will be the right eye and that won't match. A perfect smile and a smile that is snaggly tooth won't match. Flip and turn the game board every which way and ultimately you'll start matching and when you do, it's a relief - LOL.
Unfortunately, I came across a HUGE layout and didn't have any matches at all and there was no way to shuffle or even exit the game. So, the devs of this game (which has so much potential for fun and giggles) do have some bugs to work out and that's why it won't be a buy for me. But, please at least try it for the demo hour. It's free and it's fun.
This game made no sense whatsoever and I am baffled why it was listed under "mahjong' because it's not.
There is a screen board of various shapes, flowers, what have you (again, no rhyme or reason). Click on a group of one such anything, click on another group of the same whatever and, poof, they disappear. Why? What's the purpose? NOTHING is explained.
The "story" is idiotic - at best. An elf who is supposed to be a fairy (but looks like an elf) has a dream about a game (really?) and all 3 (whoa -3 whole faery/elves) get called to see the "boss" who tells them something evil is coming to do something bad and horrible and it's up to the 3 fairy/elves to stop it. How? With a walking stick and an empty bottle. How? Boss says "no idea".
Idiotic at best. Won't buy it, won't finish the demo, won't recommend it.
I'm going to bring this up straight away. The background music changes with the background that you choose to play with. The initial background that comes up (if you don't change it) had a lot of what I'm assuming was a good try at tribal music, drums, wild animals, unintelligible chanting and then ................ it truly sounded as though someone were being whipped. I almost turned the game off then.
This is a great game with a lot of challenge. At one point, I had to shuffle about 7 times before i got any more pairs. You can change your tile settings (and you earn unlocked tile sets as you play) as well as your background setting. To do this (because it took a bit to figure it out once I was in game play), click on "menu", "settings" and at the very, very top of that screen are 3 tabs - "general", "tiles" and "backgrounds". Make your choices and click the "check" mark.
I played the "adventure' mode because it usually has a good story line - not so here. I would recommend just playing "classic".
I don't want to play a game where I have to beware of what the background music or sound effects are going to sound like so this isn't a purchase for me. But, if you would like a extremely challenging game, try it.
The game starts out with a cut scene of a bunch of people partying on a beach - oh joy. Why wasn't I invited? Anyway, two older men are off to the side and one says to the other how loud these young folks are and invites the other one to the other side of the island to take some pictures. I played the demo and there was never a picture taken, mention of pictures of a mini game of pictures being taken. Blooper?????
The game play was .................... boring for someone who play mahjong on a fairly regular basis. And, I think it would be equally boring for anyone who just plays on an irregular basis because the game goes nowhere, has no "umph" to it and nothing spectacular to keep a body interested, not even a decent challenge.
I won the game each time I played. The board reshuffles itself when there are no more moves available, at no "cost" or penalty to the player. There are bonuses you can match up such as a hurricane, bomb, hammer and some other silly thing. I call it silly because the game is impossible to lose. So, why do we need these bonuses that shuffle (hurricane) when the board reshuffles itself, "get rid of those pesky tiles" (hammer) and "destroys several tiles" (bomb - but it picks it's own tiles itself - a smart bomb? LOL). And, these bonuses weren't even explained until the beginning of the second level after I had already earned them. Hmmmmmm.
So, every level you have the opportunity to earn these hammers, hurricanes, etc., etc. just by having to match up. I never used them and began to wonder if I don't use them, will they accrue or do I lose them at the end of each level. So, the last level I played (because I could take no more), I set off each and every one of those bonuses and, guess what? They don't accrue. So, I guess they are there for Arhm and giggles, as they say.
There was a bonus level, I think, although it wasn't introduced as a bonus level. It wasn't introduced as anything at all. And, again, no pictures, just find the animals in certain positions in the background.
So, yeah, 'nuf said. Great for beginners. And that's the ONLY reason for 3 stars because I was yawning through levels 3 on up. Including the supposed bonus level. Anyone other than a beginner, I recommend if you want some summer lovin', music, partying or swimming you find it elsewhere. Not even the tile are summer related. BIG SIGH.
I've never played a Nancy Drew game before as there is usually no demo so imagine my surprise when I came across this one. So, curiosity and all that....
You play as Nancy Drew who is working undercover at a swanky resort to the millionaires who want to be pampered and spruced up, probably incognito. There is a LOT of dialogue between Nancy and a lot of characters ... and I do mean characters. And I do mean A LOT of dialogue but, actually, I kind of liked that aspect of the game because you get an insight into the characters you're deal with. I wish that was something the HOPAs I play had.
The actual game seems to work kind of backwards. The mini games you play seem more conducive to solving the actual mystery you're working on at the moment that the "nuts and bolts" of the game play. Game play consists of Nancy doing a lot of meaningless tasks as the new "assistant" to everyone, it seems. Along the way, mini games ensue and a mystery is solved. On to the next one.
I finished the demo within the hour and it mentioned a lot came with the full version. But, then, I wondered if the full version was going to be too much for my poor little laptop to handle and how was I to find out without spending the money for the game?
So, Nancy Drew game fans, you will probably love this installment. It was relatively fun. But, it's a no purchase for me.
I don't even know how to explain this amazing game to you. I will tell you this....I have done a boatload and more reviews and can probably count on one hand the number of 5 stars I've given any game.
Let's start with the graphics --- only the most amazing HD 3D graphics I've ever seen. I wish I could have just stopped the game to listen to the music and just enjoy the amazing colors of the rings. THAT beautiful. THAT stunning. Which brings us to the music. OMG. I don't think I've ever heard such beautiful, relaxing music in my life.
Back to graphics. During game play (yes, I promise, I'll get to that), after you finish a level, you go to a screen where there is a galaxy (literally) of zodiac signs as huge as life, with people representing where there should be people, or gods, or whatever. In the center is this amazing looking angel, holding something or lifting something up. I know, that's vague, but until you pass a level, everything is dim, vague if you will. Then, you pass a level, and an outline of color appears around a zodiac, but not the whole zodiac. I don't know how many levels you have to play to get around the entire galaxy of zodiac signs on the outside but you can plainly see there are lines drawn everywhere until you reach the angel (love angels, collect them).
Game play. Easy, yet not. There is a conveyor belt type thing, even that's beautiful, and rings and stars in various colors are upon it. At the end, there is a ... something... that you just know you don't want the pieces to get there. The premise is that you take a small ring/star, place it with a medium ring, star and then a large ring/star (of the same color) and they disappear. But, the conveyor thing is stopped. It's weird sounding but PLEASE play and you'll see what I mean.
The bonuses are amazing and just too much to try to explain. I wish I could purchase this game but I can't. As you level up, you do need to work faster (not time wise but that THING) to match them up and sometimes even the bonuses aren't there for you and ... well, you need to work faster and I can't. An accident in a hospital some years ago has left my right arm without the dexterity and flexibility to be able to handle that. Just playing the hour demo left me in such pain it was imaginable.
I thought about purchasing it anyway and just playing a little every day. But, it's addictive. So addictive. Please, please play this game. Try it. Write a review even if you never have before. I'll be back to see what everyone thinks.
2 game "Packs" to play - Classic and Gold. Both have a LOT of levels, not sure if it's 110 each or 55 each - didn't count.
Classic level has a Christmas background that never changes. Bonuses aren't earned, they just appear. Background music between levels is definitely holiday-themed, albeit repetitive. Game play music also holiday themed, which I really enjoyed.
Gold level has a much brighter, upbeat Christmas background that also never changes. Again, bonuses don't seem to be earned for having matches of 4 or more, they just "are" and aren't even that good. Background music between levels the same as Classic - definitely a nice holiday them. Background music during game play, however, was definitely NOT holiday themed but a nice ballet sounding piece - repetitive.
There you have it, standard, maybe even a bit below standard but nice for the holiday season.
Well, I'm finally at the end of my Big City Adventure marathon and, boy, am I glad I ended with this one instead of starting with it. I might not have continued with any more if I had.
What can I say .... compared to ALL the other Big City Adventure games.... this one was staid, boring and ...well ... didn't hold my interest for very long.
Definitely NOT for me but please don't let that stop you from going around London proper and having a good time sleuthing around.
