I realized recently, I had bought the 2nd in this series and not the first so I am getting myself caught up so I can play the 3rd. I very much enjoyed this game. I liked going to the different worlds and learning historical facts about different items. I liked the noises the objects made when clicked and I liked the overall finding of the Fragments but also later finding a list of things. The mini games were unique and some hard to figure out but always manageable. I didn't like having to do some of the puzzles over however. The lock and pipe puzzles kept reappearing but weren't too difficult.
The skip and hint buttons charge fast but there is no choice of difficulty as there usually wasn't back when this game was released. It was a great game in the year it was released however comparing to modern day games, its not the best. Although I found the different worlds a great idea, the people kept repeating over and over, same with their worlds. Its as if we saw their world from another angle like the room next to the previous and so on.
The plot was a little strange, it definitely explains things better in the 2nd one. Overall, this was a fun game and I recommend it especially if trying to follow along with this series as its quite good or just to kill time, this one is good. It took me about 3-4 hours to play this game. The fragments are not the easiest to find within the scenes so it took me awhile.
My only huge pet peeve would be the final puzzle because it is not skippable and its putting the items you find with the right people. My memory is kind of bad so I had a hard time trying to figure this out and whats worst of all, the ones you have right, don't stay put so once the game resets you have to put them in all over again. I would have liked it better if the ones I got right stayed put. Made it tedious and the reason I gave it only 3 stars.
Challenge yourself in the role of the scientist-historian-scholar of ancient civilizations and mystical legends and save your friend from the Demon of Darkness!
I had planned to give this 4 stars. Its an excellent game with great graphics and an engaging and fun plot. I played on the hardest level which I always do when I have a walkthrough and had no hints, skips or help of any kind except it did have black bar tips. I love Orneon because they have hidden object scenes where you put the items back on the shelf which gives it something extra to look forward to. My only negative and the reason I wanted to give it 4 stars was because it isn't widescreen and this game has such pretty graphics and its a jungle setting, lots of elephants and sound effects to match and it would have been a WOW moment more so than it already was.
However, then I got to the bonus chapter and OMG! It was over 2 hours long, had some new places but you went through the beginning of the game like you did before only to do more in depth things. However, you did have to repeat some of the same mini games from the first time around which didn't thrill me as I hated the one with the balls among others but all in all kept my interest. I really, really enjoyed this game and Orneon keep on impressing me with what they can do. They are starting to become one of my favorite developers AND I love the pulling of the shade to have a new room. The first one in this series didn't work on my computer but I am so very glad this one did. Cheers!
When I first demo'ed this game, its hard version was impossible as the cursor didn't change so it was just a clickfest but when the developer put in a hard version with a working cursor, I demo'ed just a little bit of the game and then bought it. I regret not demoing the whole trial as I would not have purchased this game. I bought it from the small part I played because I loved the interactive hidden object scenes. They weren't the usual ones but mini games to get the item which I very much enjoyed. However, I did not realize how frequent the hidden object scenes were.
Every scene change was a hidden object scene, sometimes multiple ones in the same new scene and not all were interactive. Every time I found an item, I had a place to use it right away. There was no logic to this game, no strategy. I do like no brainer types of games sometimes but this one put me to sleep!
SPOILER of sorts
The ending has a non skippable puzzle (in hard mode, not sure about easy mode) that has you make character symbols out of a circle of lines? hard to describe. Anyways, you have the symbols in the diary but I found it impossible to replicate the symbols in the circle as the lines did not match what was in the diary so instead of looking at a walkthrough, I deleted the game. It really wasn't that interesting and I couldn't care less at that point if her father lived or died. I mean he was already a ghost and told her to kill the project. It was just a lackluster game at best.
Judge Dee is the newly appointed magistrate of Yiwang prefect. Help him uncover the truth behind a town's dark secret, its corrupt officials and the true cause of a mysterious illness!
I usually don't review games on the main page without finishing the whole game BUT since this was released on mac first and I can't find the forum page, I am going to do a DEMO review.
This game is lovely but strange at the same time. Its lovely because the graphics are hand drawn and its just a lovely ambiance about it and you can tell a lot of thought went into this game. It has voiceovers in the intro where it tells the main story however the voices are softer than the music, so its hard to actually hear it but it does have subtitles so that helped.
It has 3 modes of gameplay. Easy, Average and Hard. I started with the Hard setting BUT the hidden object scenes are timed and the mini games are as well and if you don't finish in that time, you have to start over. They give you a decent amount of time and they also list the hidden objects you need to find (butterfly, bowls etc) BUT I decided to start over on Average. Average does not time you and you can skip any puzzle without having to wait for it to fill up BUT all the hidden object scenes are silhouettes instead of a word list. The silhouettes are very tiny as were the written words on the hard version so its kind of tedious to find what you are looking for and the sound for hitting the wrong thing is AWFUL so I was very careful to search carefully and not click a lot. I don't know if there is a click penalty but the sound is penalty enough. The easy mode shows the silhouettes and the name on top of them so you can find the object quicker.
Average, is a mix of silhouette hidden object scenes and puzzles. The puzzles I have ran into during the demo were the kind most of us have seen like moving the blocks around to get one out, tanagrams, some kind of reversi/checkers thing. On the hard mode, you are timed but during Average you are not. You also pick up inventory items. Some can be combined and on average/hard they give you no indication of what can be combined, its basically trial and error. I played 45 minutes of the demo and had no idea where to play any of the inventory items.
I would recommend this game to people who want a challenge because this will definitely be one. I would recommend this game to people who have been looking for something out of the box or different than the norm. I would recommend this to people who like a story line and follow lots of dialogue/read.
Since there were voiceovers in the beginning, I thought they would be in the game itself but sadly there isn't and there is A LOT of dialogue between the characters, so much that in the 45 minutes I played, I think I spent 20 minutes of it reading. Also, I stumbled back upon the same hidden object scenes I had previously done and was able to do them again, finding the same objects but not finding a new inventory object. I wish the developer would have turned these off after finding the objects needed because its confusing as you don't need to replay them. Also, its hard to figure out where to go and what to do. I usually like games like that but this one is a little tedious. The hint button is a "blink and you miss it moment" in the hidden object scenes and it doesn't work for the main game. (at least not in average/hard).
There is a bonus section to this game that lets you replay hidden object scenes and puzzles after you unlock them from the main menu.
I think this developer put a lot of time and thought into this game and it is unique but Im not sure its for me. I love the puzzles but find the hidden object scenes tedious and I can't stand the custom cursor but if you don't use it, you can't see the functions of the cursor you need to play the game. Im really on the fence with this game. Maybe someday. To those who buy, enjoy & those who demo, you can skip the dialogue easily but make sure you get past the dialogue at least to see the good parts of this game.
I am sooo angry right now as I have spent a lot of time playing this game and its a long, interesting, entertaining one and its the END of a series so I want to know what happened BUT the ending is NOT in the SE which just really makes me angry! A bonus game should be a BONUS not the ending to a game especially a game that is in its last installment! I find it tacky and lazy and it makes me not want to support this developer at all in the future which makes me sad because I Like this developer but I think its cheap to do this. I really wish people who do these star reviews, review it AFTER THEY'VE PLAYED THE WHOLE GAME! I think the star system is useless if its just based on the demo because based on the demo, Id give this 5 stars too only to find out later it has no ending at all. I just think its misleading. Now back to what I did like...
I enjoyed playing this until the ending so here's what I liked. Its the same music as in the other games in this series but there's something about it that is pleasing to my ears so I liked that they brought it back. I also love the fact there are lots of puzzles in this game. I am a puzzle person. The only thing I didn't like about the puzzles was the fact there wasn't much variety. If you don't like checkers OR turning on all the lights, you will hate this game because those puzzles repeat throughout the entire game. I personally like turning on all the lights but I skipped the checkers game because after the first one, it got confusing and I had no use for it and didn't understand why it repeated so many times. The lights one had to do with banishing the evil but the checkers one was just overdone IMO. I also like how this developer does a variety of hidden object scenes with the usual interactive but then does ones where you put the objects back. That makes the game more fun in my opinion because it gives it a lot of variety and I don't dread stumbling upon hidden object scenes that way. I actually wish there would have been more of the "put the object back" ones or just more hidden object scenes in general. I missed the lack of them.
Overall I liked this game, it was long and interactive. I like the back and forth in games though but the ending is sooo disappointing and rushed and just not okay with this being the last installment that I went from thinking this was a 5 star game to rating this a 3. I can't even recommend it even though its fun because of the ending. IF you've been an avid fan of this series and just get the SE you will be truly disappointed :(
A Match 3 game with great sound effects is what initially draws me in as it captivates my attention and its a make it or break it aspect for me. Some games have the most annoying sounds when you match things, others like this game have an almost mesmerizing sound that keeps me very intrigued. I didn't realize how old this game is as it was released for PC users in 2010 but mac users just received this beauty in 2012! What a long wait! However, I have noticed by reading some reviews that this game did have an upgrade somewhere before being released to mac users because there is NO timer on ANY level. There are levels you can be defeated by the demons because the computer gets more coins than you or the spider/crabs reach the top of the match 3 board BUT you can either play it til you beat it like I did OR skip it.
The music was fitting but annoying at the same time. Sometimes I kept it on, other times I turned it down. Like I said though, I loved the sound of the matches and the easiness of the gameplay. I've noticed some match 3 games get slower or wont even let you click inbetween plays and this game would let you move everything at the same time so there was no pausing. Even though its an untimed game, its hard. It takes a long time to pass levels so its very time consuming. Originally I thought only have 2 powerups the whole game would not be good BUT you get one power up for collecting matches of 4 and another power up for collecting matches of 5. The powerup for the matches of 5 is heavy duty and can basically complete an entire level for you even at the start of it.
I liked that every room has a different type of match 3 play. Some are more board game collect coins style, others are key in the lock and some are just regular ice and fire plus more. The update must have deleted the timed scenes and the ability to not skip because now its a highly playable and fun game. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes unique games or match 3's and untimed games. I had a great time playing it.
This is a game I demo tested and fell in love with and could not wait to play. At first glance, although the story seems to be something we've all seen before, it didn't bother me because of the atmosphere and the game controls. Also the characters were rather attractive for a game. I actually felt that Ethan loved Clair and so I really wanted him to find her and figure everything out.
However this game is very deceiving in its demo. In the demo you have lots of INTERACTIVE hidden object scenes whereas once you get past the demo section, the Interactive hidden object scenes stop. Luckily, there are not so many H0G scenes where I went bonkers with there not being the interactive bit anymore BUT that was something I really liked in the demo and then it stopped which I thought was sloppy or lazy for the developers to do that. Also, this game is LONG and as much as I love long games, I feel like this plot kind of got lost somewhere and by the time I got to the bonus chapters (4), I just wanted to be done with the game. The other negative thing was I couldn't get it to be widescreen on my mac which was disappointing after seeing all the game reviews that it was widescreen on PC's :( But it wasn't a deal breaker.
But overall I did like this game. It had beautiful graphics and music. The music seemed to fit the weirdness of everything that was going on. I liked for once it was a guy saving the chick and everyone else. Always seems like the other way around, a nice change id say. Also, the plot was easy to follow and I enjoyed most of the mini games. The bonus chapter was long and well thought out. It wasn't just hidden object scene after another. It was a prequel to the story line so it wasn't needed to understand the whole game. It just showed how Leonard got possessed by evil and how he set up his torture chamber thing. So if you buy the SE, you will have a nice long game with an actual ending.
I do recommend this game, Im just a little burned out on it at the moment. Sometimes short and to the point is better. xx
I don't know how to review this game and since its only out for mac users and there is no forum to review it, I'll just do a brief one here. BTW, why don't mac users get a forum when games are released for us only? ANYWAYS
This is probably one of the weirdest, most bizarre but strangely fun games I've ever demo'ed. You play as Frederic Chopin who was a famous musician (piano to be exact) and you are playing a bunch of his classics in a battle type atmosphere against other musicians except their names are changed like I just played against what looked like Bob Marley but his name was Rob. Anyways, you play a piano battle against your opponent and best job wins. Its almost like a role playing game like a battle scene except instead of magical powers you can take your opponent out with musical notes.
This is a large file game and so far I can't figure out why. Maybe its the music files within it? It has cartoon graphics and it does have an amusing story line like when I ran against "Rob", he passed me something that RELAXED me so I could play the piano and not be nervous.
The thing about this game is, I actually really like the overall premise and Im a huge music fan so it intrigues me but I think the controls are very confusing and hard to manage. Im playing on "too easy" mode and if this mode is too easy, I don't want to see normal or difficult or I think very difficult? It had a lot of choices. It fit my widescreen and gave me a choice of what kind of graphics I wanted which was like 7 types but I chose beautiful and it was cartoony so it wasn't what Id consider beautiful but maybe compared to the rest? I didn't check.
So the controls are either the mouse or the keyboard using buttons WER ASDF (WER are the black keys and ASDF are the white keys of the piano, its been a LONG time since I played the piano so I don't know the actual notes, sorry but this game doesn't give them to you anyways). So in order to play the piece, it zooms the notes over this makeshift keyboard and you have to push the buttons at the right time OR you can use the mouse to push the keys. I tried it both ways and Im better with the mouse but its still hard and like I said I was on the "too easy" level. It was hard at first to do the song but the songs are kind of long so halfway through Id finally be pushing the right buttons.
The animations and characters in this game are so funny that it makes the game for me. I can't say Id buy it unless it was on sale BUT it amused me enough to keep playing. Also, it scores you on accuracy and mine was awful, like one time I scored 29% but the game still let me progress to the next musician so at least you can progress even if you stink.
Id say try it out because if you like music and can get used to the controls, Id say it would be a pretty fun game. Cheers.
Let me first start by saying that I am not a fan of match 3 games and usually Im bored to tears but I needed something new than the usual stuff I play as Im getting bored to tears of that genre so I bought this match 3 game as the daily deal. And its the best $2.99 I've ever spent.
This is a unique take on match 3 games as you have to pick up and drop the matches all over the board to match them. Its highly addicting and it has goals for you to achieve each level as well. Sometimes you have to match all the tiles to clear the board, other times its a story piece, matching pirates, matching leaks etc but all the tasks you are given follow the storyline so it all makes sense. There are no voiceovers BUT the story is easy to read and if you like pirate games, you can probably figure out what happens anyways. Since you have different tasks, the pieces on the board change according to what you have to do.
My only pet peeve would be the graphics aren't super quality like a newer game would be but it never interfered with the game itself for me. Its just for a long time, I thought I was matching feathers but as it turns out it was really swords! They looked like feathers~! Also all the tasks that ask you to match people, the people make different noises and its amusing. The soundtrack repeats but changes for each level. There is a really peaceful song that plays that I wish played more instead of the frantic track. I had to turn the music down a few times to concentrate but overall it didn't bother me.
This game kept my interest because each level was something new. I also liked how building the town gave you special power ups and they were really helpful to the harder levels. It took me a long time to realize by matching pirates, you get a pirate who takes out part of your board. If you match an hourglass, it gives you more time back and if you match hammers, you get one to break a tile. As you go on you can add to these and make them stronger. It would have been nice in the beginning to realize if I had matched hourglasses I would have had more time and not died repeatedly but once I got used to this game it became about strategy and how to use the power ups and I was able to complete the entire game, playing a couple levels a day (there are 100) in about a month and I had a wonderful time doing it!!! Also, because of this game, I have begun to play more match 3 and although I can't find one exactly like this one, its still a great genre I overlooked.
I wish the developers would release a follow up to this game or another theme with the same concept. This is one of the best games I own and I own a lot of games but I can't remember the last time I had so much fun playing a game before and I feel extremely accomplished for being able to beat all the levels and complete the entire game. Its one of those games, you just feel good about yourself after you've finished it and then wish it wasn't over. Cheers.
I really like builder games and I feel like maybe I should have started with this one if I was new to this genre. It took me a couple levels to really get used to the system it takes to beat a level but once you realize the strategy then its very easy to beat every level and get gold. I played My Kingdom for the Princess first and in that game you don't need to get a bunch of helpers as sometimes you can finish the level all by yourself or with one other guy and it works out BUT in this game having all the buildings up to the maximum and all the workers out that are possible is the way to do this game. More helpers are better in this game as it can be frantic.
HOWEVER, In other builder games I have played there is a lot more variety in what to do. You can tell this game is the first in the series not just by the title but by what you are supposed to do. In all levels, you are either finding crystals, rune stones or idols. It's all there ever is and it never changes so the game kind of loses its charm if played too long. Its definitely a game I needed to stop and come back to later because it became boring. I would have liked more to do than just break down rocks and build a road. And because of just having those tasks, I found this game get easier as time went on having the strategy and then the same goals. I was able to complete almost every level the first or second time. I like to be challenged where I need like 3 or 4 times to really get it but this game was simple and I beat it quite fast. It really did feel short after I finished it and the storyline kind of faded so the ending was predictable and kind of lame.
Now, I've tried Roads of Rome 2 & 3 and have purchased them but wanted to start from the beginning of the series and just by demoing those, I can already tell the developers made those games harder and more challenging with lots more to do. I would give this game a 3.5 as its fun but not challenging enough and kind of bored me halfway through. I would recommend this game though to people who are new to this genre so they can get a handle on how to play these types of games or to anyone interested in this series because I can see how starting at the beginning and moving forward will be something quite special since the games appear to evolve with each new title. Kudos.
