Is it me or does this game remind me a little of the classic MCF games? The graphics are spectacular as are the sound and special effects. It certainly is a beautifully put-together game that sent chills up my spine. The intro alone was an indication that this game is rather sophisticated and there is an element of the macabre to the story. Before I go any further, let us begin with the story.
You have been hunting Dark Dimensions all around the country saving souls from its evil grasp. You come across an article in the paper reporting that a mysterious smoke has crept into the city of Seven Oaks and you decide to investigate. The history of Seven Oaks bears a terrible tragedy; many years ago the Music School burns down, claiming the lives of seven of its student. Now that you have arrived, you discover that the smoke has engulfed the city and a young girl is swept up before your eyes. The Dark Dimension has struck again and your adventure begins.
Beautiful graphics and artwork enhanced by a well composed haunting musical score in the background along with great ambient and special effect sounds, all combined to give you an ominous atmosphere making for a very entertaining game play. I found myself totally engrossed from the get go.
There are three game modes to choose from; casual, advance and hardcore. Fortunately there were absolutely no sparkles or glints the advance mode, unfortunately there was no map indicators as well. A tiny request to the developers, please add customized settings next time. Game features include a video diary, a jump map and the SG in located on the upper right side of the screen.
Somber Song is an apt title for the very somber atmosphere created in the game offering us a standard HOPA game. The first thing that struck me was the details given to every scene. I found myself in a house and the constant knocking of the door made me rush to find the key which incidentally was not as easy as I predicted. Adventure game play requires a bit of thought which I absolutely loved. Although the black bar tips does offer you a guiding hand, I found that you also needed to use your own logic to make your way out of some puzzles. Hidden object scenes were spectacular; a series of actions are required to find your inventory item. I loved them and found it refreshing to play. Mini-games I came across during the demo were very well conceptualized and surprisingly, some even offered a fare amount of challenge.
There are collectables which involve finding pieces of musical scores that when combined, offer a short video footage that reveal the story. Being spoilt by many other CE games, I really wished there were more such as morphing objects and a list of achievements. Sadly the developers decided not to add these features which would have made me even happier. I realize that many players don’t really care for these tiny extras; I personally think they add to a game experience and offer a bit more in way of a challenge. Nevertheless, I still was totally engrossed and also notice that the bonus sections offer you a Match 3 game which is accessed upon purchase.
I absolutely love this paticular Dark Dimension story line; although creepy and tragic, it does offer that creep factor which I enjoy immensely. I cannot wait to play this tonight and definitely recommend it to all.
I recommend this game!

I am totally in agreement with JustTheFact, this really is a spectacular game. Yes it is cartoonish, yes the first scenes are familiar; like we haven't had a car accident and woken up in an empty sanatorium or hospital? The story however is really fascinating, a theme most of us can relate too. Conquering one's fear and realizing what a paralyzing effect it has on our lives, inhibiting our actions and keeping us lock in our own prison filled with regrets and discontentment.
In Mind Snares, we join Alice in her quest to fight the demon that has her trapped in her own mind which is manifested in an abandoned hospital. Her adventure begins in this classic HOPA game that takes me back to the days when you had to use a bit of your brain cells to decipher puzzles, collect inventory items and solve mini-games without the help of a strategy guide or a pet or a companion.
I realized after having played the first hour of the demo that I really do miss the classics. Although visuals are somewhat dated, don’t let the cartoon graphics fool you. The voice-overs are very well acted and background music adds to the intensity of the game. There is enough tension that does build up and enhances the fear factor and makes the game even more interesting. By the end of the demo, I was totally engrossed with Alice and her quest to find the Totems that represent the hindrances in her life and when completed, will return her back to her reality a changed woman.
There are three game modes to choose from and Expert mode offers penalty clicks as well. There is a diary that holds your clues and outlines objectives and a map that does indicate areas of interest and allows for travel. At first glance the game appears to be easy, but the challenge lies in the fact that there really isn’t too much hand holding. Although not too strenuous, you do need on occasion to use the little grey cells to decipher where use your inventory item which is what do prefer. The hidden object games are standard, junk-piled with slight interaction, classic and easy to do. I also came across finding silhouettes of items shown. I enjoyed the mini-games, very well conceptualized and some even require a bit more time and effort to solve.
There are no Blings in this game but there is a list of achievements to earn which does make for some challenge. Game play is pretty straightforward, driven by a very interesting and thought provoking storyline. I applaud the developers for taking us back to the good old days when HOPA games were interesting and fun to play. A winner in standard game category and a must have on my list. I really think the story is interesting and may no doubt shed some light in our own personal journey in the need to conquer our own fears.
I recommend this game!

I really hate rats, their slimy bodies, the beady eyes and oily tail; I simple hate them almost to the point of suffering from a mild case of monophobia (which incidentally I had to look up the word in the dictionary). Wouldn’t you know that there are rats in this game, great big snarling teeth-gnashing rats that pop up in front of you growling and hissing? There are also bugs and scorpions and moving plants and other not so very nice creatures. Nevertheless as it is only a computer game, I decided to overlook my revulsion, play the demo and write this review.
Mystery of Unicorn Castle: The Beastmaster Collector's Edition is truly an enigma. Despite the aversion I feel for some of the characters, it has proven to be a pleasant surprise. Upon initial glance, I found the graphics discerning, dark and blurred at times. Although the artwork does captivate the essence of the storyline, there could have been more sound and visual effects to really enhance the overall atmosphere. I feel that I am repeating myself when I say that this game looks old and dated which is due to the graphics. However once you get passed this, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the overall game play.
Our story begins rather abruptly; the abduction of a young orphan called Sophie by a red-eyed Beastmaster who is apparently the Lord of all beasts. You are asked to investigate and soon you find yourself surrounded by mysterious references to a Unicorn Castle and weird sciences projects that seem to have gone badly.
The main menu offers optional settings which include four game modes to choose from and picking Hardcore will make the game ultimately more challenging. Your tools include a journal that holds clues and also video footages of cut scenes to review. There is a map that indicates if actions are needed and also allows you to jump. The SG is on the left side of the screen that indicates that there are 6 chapters along with a bonus chapter. The hint button on the right side merely points at a direction.
Having started my adventure, I came across some elements of surprises that made this game rather unique. There are tasks that you come across and you are given a choice as to either complete the task or move on. There is also a Karmic option as well such; you either save a scorpion or kill it with pesticide and apparently your choice results in a Karmic effect that plays out later on in the game. When I looked at the list of achievements, I notice that there are two trophies for each task, one which is earned if you are a do-gooder and the other which probably indicates that you have a mean streak. This means I need to go back and re-play the game in order to earn all the trophies; a very clever maneuver by the developers if you ask me.
There are Hidden object scenes to play and just be warned, random clicking is punished and I won’t spoil the surprise by revealing what happens when you click away. Mini-games are interesting and unfortunately some were a breeze to play. I really miss those long and complicated mini-games and puzzles that took time and effort to solve. There is a lot of running around from one scene to another with a multitude of tasks to fulfill. You also have collectables which involve finding 45 rather obscured images of pumpkins throughout the game and 10 pages that outline the story.
Despite the disgusting rats that I need to fend off and the rather off putting graphics, I really enjoyed the game. It looks like there is a battle to be won, a child to be saved as well as a mystery to be solved. I give it four stars and applaud the ingenuity of the developers and look forward to seeing them progress with other games to come.
I recommend this game!

Riddlestone, once a peaceful and virtuous Kingdom, now plays host to the seven deadly sins and everyone is taken hostage. As darkness enters the hearts of all who dwell there, riots, looting and mayhem make way for utter chaos and calamity which makes the Kingdom not a very nice place to visit. Queen Olivia Rockwood, who has been impeached by some mysterious force, has summoned you to find her missing daughter, Anna. It is up you now to try to return Riddlestone to its former glory before it completely it becomes HADES on Earth.
An interesting story brought to us by our all time favorite pachyderm group of developers. Although I have to say I was surprised at the rather dismal visuals and sad to say I wasn’t thrown over by the graphics. Although I did like the artwork; beautifully hand painted canvases that unfortunately look a bit distorted by the low quality of graphics employed. There are also a cartoonish feel to some of the cut scenes and overall the game looked a bit old and worn out in some of the scenes. Although there are settings for special effects and ambient sounds, I really didn’t notice any thing that popped up at me. There are voice-overs from cartoon like characters but no realism to any of the animations such as mouth movements. Visually the game looses points compared to some other games that these developers have brought us.
There are three game modes to choose from and what you have here is yet another standard HOPA game with collectables and achievements that now seem to be the norm to any CE game. There is no journal but a task list, a rather crude map that does allow for travel and does indicate areas where action is required. Hidden objects scenes had slight interaction and poor graphics along with lighting resulted in some objects difficult to make out. Mini-games that I came across during the demo were really very easy and quick to solve: no brain teasers here. There are 24 crowns to locate throughout the game and some ghostly images to collect that are not difficult to spot. You have also 10 achievements to earn, all not very challenging.
Did I like the game? I found the story compelling but found myself slowly losing interest as I just began to go through the motions. The game just did not grab me and in my opinion, I can either take advantage of a sale or simply wait for the Standard version to come out which seems more plausible. Sorry folks, look is like this game earns a three star from me which means I probably will be published last in the review section as criticism seems to be a downfall lately.
I don't recommend this game.

Wow, just the other day I was complaining about all the light fairy tale themes and finally, a game that most certainly sends chills down my spine. It has been a while since we have visited an asylum; my dark side was beginning to get restless. Our story is definitely creepy and there is a mystery to be solved.
Just when you thought you knew everything about your life, you receive a pretty ominous note from a long lost twin sister that you haven’t seen or heard from in over a decade. Your adventure begins with a strange visitor at your door who has a message that beckons you to an asylum.
The game is dark and I don’t just mean the general theme of the story. Graphics, artwork along with lighting or rather lack of lighting all are bleak and rather depressing. Although you can adjust the brightness, it really doesn’t do much on screen. Regardless of the rather outdated look, the combination of visuals and sounds definitely have an chilling effect that is enhanced by ominous music in the background, very minimal voice-over and some rather creepy animations and special effects.
There are three levels of difficulty and I just wish that the expert mode would have included no black bar hints, making it even more challenging to play. Main menu offers extras which include puzzles and mini-games. Game mechanics include a journal that will hold your clues and outline the story as it unfolds. There is a map that will allow you to travel and if desired, will indicate areas that are in need of action. There is a rather disgusting looking doll, a female chucky who works as a hint button. It is too bad the developers did not add any sound effects to her, she just sits there silently and when needed, you get lights that show direction. Game-play is standard HOPA with adventure play and interesting hidden object scenes that are interactive and not as easy as you think. I enjoyed some mini-games, nothing overly challenging but some were time consuming. There are collectables, figurines that will outline the story for you and a list of achievements to earn.
Sadly, this game doesn’t really qualify as a Collectors’ Edition. It could have been much more complex and entertaining had the developers just added a bit more savvy into the overall visuals and game mechanics. Nevertheless, it is the chilling story and the odd zombie-like creature that passes the screens definitely has my full attention. I love the demo and am really looking forward to playing this game tonight. As I understand, the bonus section will add more to the story which is clever. There is a sale and I will definitely take advantage of it. For fans of scary movies, horror fiction and the macabre, I don’t think you will be disappointed. KUDOS to the developers, they definitely get an A for effort.
I do understand that the game lacks in technicality, but I still give it 5 stars becaus I love the story and it has been a while since I felt creeped out.
I recommend this game!

There really is nothing new about today’s game, nothing we haven’t already seen or played. Still, these types of HOPA games continue to thrill me and entertain me and unless developers come up with bright new ideas, it looks like we will continue to get similar game mechanics with differing storylines. Not that I am complaining, I enjoy playing games with enchanting storylines, strong visuals and sounds and the many extras that offer extra challenges to a game.
Grim Legends: The Forsaken Bride offers sharp graphics, beautifully drawn artwork enhanced by excellent sounds and effects along with well executed animation work. Visually the game has many merits and I love the ambient sounds in the background as did my cats at home; each time kitty on screen began to meow, my cats were up and about searching the room. Also, developers managed to use relatively good voice-overs and music that was non-distracting.
Today’s story is about forsaken love, a curse and enchantments in a world filled with fairies and magic. On the eve of her wedding, your twin sister Lilly is kidnapped by a great bear who rides off with her on its back. You now set forth with Edward, her fiancé and travel deep into the woods of Ravenbrook in search of her. There appears to be a tragic tale of love and betrayal that has paved the way to this event which is what you need to find out about and so your adventure begins.
There are three levels of difficulty to choose from and as always, you have your extras which include Hidden object games and puzzles to play. Game tools include a journal, list of objectives, a map that does allow for travel, and your strategy guide that indicates that there are 7 chapters along with two bonus chapters to play. You game companion is a cute tabby kitten that purrs and meows to indicate that he can help retrieve items far from your reach and in this game, there are no items to buy for your kitty nor do you get to name him.
Game mechanics offer the standard adventure game play which also includes fragmented hidden object scenes. While I am not a great fan of FROGs, I found that the items here were easy to locate. There was one other hidden object scene during the trial version which was finding the silhouettes of items so there are a variety of Hidden Object Scenes to play. There is also the option to switch to a game of dominoes whereby you need to place your domino which surprisingly I found more challenging to play and a lot more entertaining. As for mini-games, there seemed to be many of them, all different and all very well conceptualized and integrated into the story. I thought that the mini-games were much more interesting than the hidden object scenes, which seem to be fewer in comparison.
As for the extras, you have your collectables, a set of fairies that are very well camouflaged and also morphing objects which are described as elusive objects. Each elusive object that is located decrypts the storybook that is located at the left bottom of your screen. There is also a list of achievements to earn along the way along with trophies as well.
I really do have to applaud the developers who have brought us very good games in the pass and continue to do so with Grim Legends: The Forsaken Bride. I enjoyed the overall game atmosphere enhanced by great sound effects, the storyline which can be enjoyed by players of all ages and the game mechanics that come in variations. Definitely not a game that will bore you but may be a bit too predictable for the hard-core player who is searching for a more challenging and mentally stimulating game. I do miss the dark themes and fairytale stories just become a bit too saccharine for my taste. However, that is not to say that I won’t be adding this to my collection after all, I enjoyed the mini games along with the game of dominos and will continue to torment my kitties at home with the sounds coming from my computer.
I recommend this game!

At first glance a game that looked a bit dated however once I began to play, I found myself enthralled with the story along with the mechanics.
Our story is a familiar theme of a young mother who searches for her lost son inside a world of enchantments. Playing as Susan, you realize that your son Jimmy is suddenly ensnared in roots and is dragged off into an old tree which turns out to be a portal that leads to another world where magic rules. As you venture off, you encounter an array of mystical creatures and realize that there is a dangerous adversary who you need to deal with in order to get your son back.
Visually I thought the graphics could have been better yet I will give merit for the artwork. Although there are ambient sounds in the background, silence also prevails due to a minimal use of voice-overs. Main menu offers customized settings for level of difficulty which is always a great plus in my books. Game features include a journal, list of tasks and objectives if desired as well as a map that allows for travel and will indicate areas of interests if also desired.
After having played the demo, I found myself immersed inside the game. Although I found some of the tasks very routine, the mini-games that I came across were somewhat challenging and fun to play. Hidden object scenes are varied which tells me that the developers have researched well; you have a selection of finding silhouettes, picking up objects and using them on others or a standard list to find that also include mini-puzzles to solve. Game mechanics also include searching for a list of collectables which include snails, snakes, pine cones and skulls. Not all were easy to find due to the poor graphics and lighting of some of the scenes. You also have a list of achievements and what I did find discerning was that there is an achievement of completing the main game in less than three hours. Than unfortunately mean that although there are 8 chapters, the game is on the short side and that may be a problem for some.
Despite the visuals, I liked the game! While it doesn’t have the WOW factor and the storyline has been hashed out many times, I enjoyed many of the tasks and puzzles. I realize that there are no great surprises with many of the games that are coming out, however taking into consideration that there are frequent sales on CE; I will most probably add this to my list of games to buy. I just need to pay off this month’s credit card which unfortunately means I need to wait on this for a while.
I recommend this game!

Dance Macabre is a beautiful game with a haunting storyline that will definitely rank high on my list of favorite games for 2014.
Our story originates with unrequited love, obsession, a vengeful act and tragic deaths of Marie, a prima ballerina and Gaspar, a young composer. Now 30 years later, your sister has invited you to attend her debut performance as Donatella di Fiore, a role written for Marie by Gaspar. Suddenly Adele disappears and your adventure begins as you set off to find her. A series of tasks await you and you soon discover that you are not alone; also present is a cast of earth bound spirits needing your help along with Adele, all victims of an old curse.
I am happy to say that today we have a very entertaining Collectors’ Edition game with all the bells and whistles making it well worth the extra cost. Customized settings, beautiful graphics and artwork, very good voice-overs with synchronized mouth movements, good sound and visual effects and well designed animation cut scenes. These developers are always on the mark and continue to deliver top-notch games. I loved the story and I love all the features which include a journal with various tasks that are listed, objectives that need to be met, Hidden object scenes that come in variation and the choice to play the Bubble game instead. There are very well conceptualized mini-games, not terribly difficult to solve but there ia a factor of fun to them. You have 44 roses to collect along with a list of achievements to earn. There is a souvenir room that can only be accessed upon purchase of the game which I intend to do so immediately after writing this review. Depending on your settings for level of difficulty, the game also offers a enough challenge to please hard core players.
Although we have all played similar games like this one, I could go on and on about what why I do love about this game but it is suffice to say that I am an avid fan of ghost stories and since the theme reminds me of the famous Phantom of the opera, I am looking forward to playing this gem tonight with lights turned off and sound turned up.
I recommend this game!

Our favorite pachyderm friends have done it again and this time they have added something new. Mystery Trackers: Raincliff's Phantoms Collector's Edition will most definitely make my list of favorite games for this year and as a fan of both the series and the developers, I am sure that this game will please even the most hard-core players out there.
What was supposed to be a simple human interest story turns out to be a deadly in-depth investigation with one tragic outcome: the disappearance of lead reporter, Emilie White. Assigned to check out reports about suspicious activities taking place in Rainecliff, Emilie disappears and you as the all time favorite detective is asked to find her and reveal the story behind what is going on. It’s cold, it’s snowing and you find clues that involve a mysterious man who is invisible to the naked eye and the rest is up to you to uncover.
As always with this series, Mystery Trackers introduces another gripping tale brought to life with stunning graphics, animations and artwork. There are great voice-overs, environmental sounds and special effects that definitely enhance your gaming experience. There are four game modes to choose from and hard-core players will enjoy not having any help whatsoever. As everyone will no doubt try the demo, there really is not point in outlining game features but merely to say that as always with these developers, we have a five gold star game with everything thrown in, including the kitchen sink. Basically it isn’t anything we haven’t seen but as I am always a fan, I enjoy searching for clues, playing standard Hidden Object scenes and solving challenging mini-games. I only wish that the developers would have added a variation on HO scenes but I guess you really cannot please everyone.
I enjoy the winter environment in this game and I am happy to see my little dog is back to help me out with hard to reach tasks. As for tools to help out during my investigation, I have my journal, my map that indicates areas of progress as well as allows me to travel and as always, my trusty SG which thankfully is easily accessible. SO what is the new feature I spoke about earlier? The thermometer at the left side of the bottom screen which I had no idea what is was for until I read it in the Strategy Guide. Apparently there is a morphing object in each scene and the temperature slowly drops until you find it. If you don’t, frost will set in freezing the game momentarily. You do have the option to turn this off but I found it added a bit more excitement. Alongside morphing objects, there are also collectables and a list of achievements. Everything that makes me wants to spend the extra coins.
I loved the visuals and loved the game and I also loved the level of challenge so as soon as I pay off last months credit card, I am off to buy.
I recommend this game!

If you are a puzzle person like myself and a fan of Hidden object scenes that will absolutely blow your mind, this is the game for you. I am embarrassed to say I have not played any of the previous Clutter games but will now definitely be looking them up.
Who is the Void? What is the Void? That is for you to find out but first you need to solve a multitude of puzzles and play various Hidden object scenes in order to collect your clues. Apparently there is a giant jigsaw puzzle to complete at the end, OOOH what fun!
Graphics are sharp and clean and you get to cutomize your settings. There is alot of text to read, proverbs to go through (which are my personal favorites) and you can also skip these from your option menu. I liked the piano playing in the background which does not distract you from the game.
Hidden object scenes are cluttered objects with obstacles that need to be eliminated. There are letters to pick up and coins as well as puzzle pieces within each scene. Then you have pictures of the objects you need to match or find and let me tell you, it isn't easy as you think. I found myself scanning the scene for what felt like minutes and still couldn't find what was staring right before me. Thankfully you have hints to help you out.
Puzzles are a blast here and you have a variety of them. There is the Tetrisudoko which I simply loved and the mini-jigsaws as well. There really is so much here that it made my head spin. I should warn you though, it looks to be highly addictive with an amount of frustration level that will no doubt keep me awake tonight. I loved it and highly recommend it to those who enjoy a bit of challenge. Now I need to go back to discover the other Clutter games that I apparently have missed. I am now trying very hard not to continue to play this as I really have to go and start my day. Enjoy!
I recommend this game!
