Several months ago, I got the chance to play this game, but I can't recall if it was a CE or an SE version. All I know is that I LOVED it, and couldn't wait until it's release.
It has everything the other 'Dark Tales' stories has: an interactive map that not only transports you but closes off scenes once you've completed them. Fun interactive HOS, and not so hard (at least in the demo) mini-games and puzzles.
I don't usually buy CE's, as they are too expensive, plus I can do without all of the extras. But I just couldn't wait until the SE version comes out, so I immediately purchased this game.
If you like the other Dark Tales games, you'll like this one just as much, possibly a little bit more. Enjoy!
Synopsis: A great 'wondering what's going to happen next' adventure game that captured me from the first scene.
You get:
An interactive map Intriguing mini-games and puzzling puzzles Story-line that's intriguing and mysteriously written Cut scenes depicting an 'old-fashioned' feel Game play/length worthy of your hard-earned cash
I purchased this game immediately even before I completed the demo, and I don't do this normally. But something about this game drew me in, and I HAD to have it (PUZZLING indeed). It doesn't have the typical feel of most of the games on Big Fish, but with that said, check it out for yourself.
Here is a short synopsis of the game after purchasing and playing it half way through:
PROS:
MATCH 3 GAME: A unique and different Match 3 game is introduced. You have four colored tiles (red/green/purple/brown), 10 of each. You have to destroy these tiles in a specific number of moves in order to destroy the evil ghost. Sounds easy, right? It starts out easy, but as you progress in the game, it gets harder.
STORY LINE: I thought the story and the banishment of the ghosts interesting. Although there are so many games out there with ghosts and evil spirits, it's the BANISHMENT of the ghosts in this game, that sets it apart from the other games. Arlene (the main ghost) had a hand in each of the ghosts death, and thus the more you banish/kill-off the ghosts, the madder she gets. SHE WANTS CONTROL OF THEM AND OF YOU.
GRAPHICS: For the most part, the graphics were crisp and clear. (see cons for more detail).
MINI-GAMES: I have to agree with most of the other reviewers when I say that most of the mini-games were on the easy side.
CONS: At the beginning of the game, the graphics were grainy and dark. The caricature of Bob was almost comical, his movements resembling a puppet that practically 'floated' as he walked. The voice used definitely didn't match the image/drawing portrayed.
Overall, I enjoyed the game, even though the macabre is not my 'cup of tea'.
I am rather new to playing Jigsaw Puzzle games on Big Fish. I own the following two games (so far):
Holiday Jigsaw Easter 3, and Holiday Jigsaw Halloween 2. This jigsaw puzzle game is exactly the same as these two games. It offers the following:
5 CATEGORIES: Nature/Food/Shopping/Gaiety/Romance
Each category has 13 pages of puzzles to choose from. The music is the same as the above mentioned games.
**I LOVE THE COLORS AND GRAPHICS OF THESE PUZZLES. THE COLORS ARE CRISP AND CLEAR. THE 'BEACH' (PICTURES, ETC.,.,) HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY FAVORITE SO THIS IS DEFINITELY A PURCHASE FOR ME**
I had to add my review to the other already 'glowing' reviews. This game simply has all of the WOW factors one hasn't seen in any game in quite a while. The creepy, scary, haunting-type games are really not my forte, but from time to time, I do like a good scare. I do have some games that fit the bill, so to speak, but this game goes beyond that and I truly enjoyed every minute, and can't wait to purchase the full version of the game.
Here is what I found simply amazing about this game that rises above all other games that I've purchased:
1. At different times in the game, you have to choose the 'correct' answer. Your answer determines the outcome of the game (or maybe even 'your' game).
2. A HOS that you've never seen in any other game before, the rotating Rubik cube. You have silhouette items to find and then place them back in their proper scene. The cube is initially two-sided, with two different scenes facing you with items to find. You then rotate the cube downward to two more different two-sided scenes. Once you find a particular item, another item may appear in your inventory but you have to decide which scene it goes into. Then you have to place that item back. The cube rotates up and down between the scenes. The items are relatively small, but you could still find them. An amazing HOS that I hope to find in other games to come.
3. The graphics/sounds/colors/images were 100% spectacular. The 'scare' factor was definitely there for those of you who enjoy these types of games.
4. The mini game (mouse trying to get out of the maze): you get to choose which way the mouse exits the maze (two choices). You only get so many moves. I had to 'skip' this one because the poor mouse couldn't find the exit.
All in all, everything that I can think of positive has been said. I couldn't really find anything negative. This game will surely stay #1 on BF's 'Top Ten' list and maybe 'Game of the Year'. I am not one to spend the extra $ for a CE because I don't care for all of the extras, but that aside, this game is worth the extra marbles (you have to search for marbles for an achievement).
This is the only third VA, Park Ranger's game I've played. I didn't play the first. Here are the similarities that I noticed in comparison to PR 2 & 3:
1: Same music that goes on and on and doesn't change. It might make the game even better if they changed the music from time to time.
2. Same cartoonish-looking, blank, wide-eyed, fake-looking drawn characters. I know that this is characteristic of this game, but wanted to add this to this review. They've also added a few new members, of course.
3. Same type of mini-games (demo only):
A. Finding a list of words (word/search puzzle) B. Adding pieces to make up the map of the park C Turning snapshots/photos around to form a complete picture D. Swapping tiles till you form a complete picture
**The one thing I didn't like is the little time that was given to complete a mini game in order to get your full points. The game where you have to put all of the many pieces into the park map, IMO, took me forever, way past the allotted time. If you miss the time allowed, you only get 350 points. I don't know how many points you get for completing the game in time. Maybe the younger and quicker gamers out there can let me know :))
The changes that I noticed in comparison to PR 2 & 3 are:
1. Less animals and trash to find (or at least it seem to me). It might change as you get more into the game, I don't know. I am just basing my opinion/review on the DEMO only,
2. The items were harder to find. You still have your RED items to find, an area what I call a mini HOS, and your BLUE items to find.
All in all, PR 4 is still another good game in the ongoing popular series. This version, to me, fell short (DEMO ONLY) in regard to finding more animals, more trash, maybe offering new mini games. However, I will be adding this game to my substantial list of BF games. Thanks!
WOW! I have all of the 'Fear for Sale' games (not that I've played them all yet). But this game grabs you initially from, of course, the handsome introductory picture of 'Alex'. But that aside, I won't go into the details about the story (because other reviewers will), other than to say that Alex lost his wife and his daughter was kidnapped. He lives in this big mansion alone, other than his maid, who has secrets of her own. He lives as a hermit, never leaving the house.
Here's what I liked about the demo:
The first HOS scene I came across was hilarious, IMO. You approach the porch, and sitting in a rocking chair is a rabid raccoon. Surrounding him are a lot of various items apparently he has been 'hoarding'. Whenever you click on an item, he bares his teeth, and growls at you. There's music playing in the background, but I'm not paying too much attention to it yet. Until I give the raccoon a cookie that's in my inventory. All of a sudden it's nirvana. 'I' hear the music now, only because the raccoon has drawn my attention to himself. He is now slowly rocking in his chair (and I mean slowly), munching ever so slowly on his cookie, and his eyes are closed. NOW you can get the items you need.
The second HOS scene (bathroom) that I came across in the demo was unique. You first need to shut off the water before you can do anything. The scene seem cluttered to me, so I just started clicking around. When I clicked on the bathtub filled with water, a rubber duck popped out of the water, one of the faucets appeared, and the water stopped. In the area where you normally have a list of items to look for, you have a fogged-up, wet screen. Then once you figure out what to do with this, when you click on an item, a bright blue symbol glows. You click on it, and it goes towards the mirror. Just another unique aspect of this game.
Almost everything you click on in this game gives you some type of action, whether it's a squirrel, or a bird. Also beware of the pictures or windows in the mansion, for they hold a surprise!!
The graphics, music, colors, everything you can possibly think of are fantastic. ALL WRAPPED UP IN A DARK, GLOOMY, GHOSTLY, BOW!
Things I didn't like in the demo:
There was nothing that I didn't like.
So if you haven't tried any of the 'Fear for Sale' games, your really missing out. They are one of my favorite series. Like everyone says, try the demo first. You won't be sorry. Enjoy!
Personal note to Penmom36:
I 'always' look for and read your reviews first before I purchase or download a trial/demo game. I also love your phrases that you add under your name with each review. They always make my laugh. Thanks.
I wasn't able to complete the 90 min. demo (only 36 mins) as it is 0500 in the morning, but wanted to finish this review, so any typos are my responsibility :0
I think I played another 'Sea of Lies' game before but didn't enjoy it, but I don't remember the name. From what I played of this game, I did enjoy. What caught my attention in the first place was the introduction: the deep baritone of the guy's voice before the screen came on that took you to the page where you add your name, options, etc....kind of like a climatic beginning.
Once your aboard the ship, your immediately attacked by some sea creature/monster. The captain becomes injured and asked you, (a Surgeon) to steer the ship to safety. The man next to him (a chauvinistic man of course) asks the captain 'Why would you ask her to steer the ship. She's only a surgeon'?The captain has a few choice words of course and that is soon settled. Mind you, you've never done such a thing in your life. This takes you to a mini-game of a sort where you have to steer the ship while avoiding attacks from the monster at the same time. I'm not good at navigation, plus it was 5 o'clock in the morning, so I just hit the SKIP button. So of course you crash, sink the ship and land on some island.
Until I got tired, this is what I encountered in the demo:
I met a woman from the island who collected poisonous plants. Something not quite right about her. She just stands there and stares at you a lot.
Then you go into town, and you get to help the Mayor because somehow he has contracted some virus or illness and his daughter goes into the forest and collects these plants (another woman who collects weird plants and who is also weird.......hmm, do we all see some connection???)
You get to gather some plants , make up a vial and give it to the Mayor and the daughter says she needs to go into the forest to gather enough ingredients for two more potions for her father to be completely healed??? He didn't seemed healed to me. Anyway......
In the 36 mins of the demo that I played, I played two HOS, and it was your typical find one part, and that part connected to another part, etc (my favorite kind). I hate the straight forward kind of HOS.
The graphics for the most part were clean cut and crisp, like you were right there, except maybe the brief scene on the ship before it sank, The music was a little distracting, had to turn it down some, maybe because it was 5 in the am. The colors were kind of drab on the ship, the island colors were OK, not as vibrant as I am used to seeing.
All in all, I think this might be a good game to try. As we all know, we all have different taste. Been with Big Fish since 2007, and love love love their games, but have not loved them all, as we all have not loved them all. Enjoy!! or not!
I could tell by the introductory 'picture' that this might be sort of like a PINK PANTHER movie, with the main character fumbling around because he/she didn't have a clue what to do. Well in this case, it was true. I had no clue what to do in this game. There were little to no instructions as to what the 'tools' were and how to use them. 'Eventually' I figured them out, but by that time, I had lost all patience and quit the game. Then I told myself, "Kathy, surely there is more to this game then just fix painting after painting after painting after painting".?.... (YOU GET THE PICTURE ). But lo and behold NO.
This game might be a keeper and worth something if it had a story behind it, or simply 'something' else to grab our attention, like maybe a few HOS thrown in. Something we all seem to enjoy.
Finding the Millers is 'initially' the least of your worries. Navigating and wondering what exactly you are suppose to do is. Without the 'strange' map that is provided, you would be totally lost, IMHO. Going back and forth, up and down, without any rhyme or reason, makes the game not as enjoyable as it could be.
I really enjoyed the HOS in the demo, as they were a little different in the way that they were played out. There were not a lot of puzzles in the demo, unless I was totally concentrating in figuring out where to go to next :))
The graphics weren't all that great. Colors were dull and lacked vibrancy. I did, however, think the little old man was cute.
All in all, I'm going to buy the full version of the game for the simple 'pleasure' of finding out what really happens to the Miller's, even if I have to go back and forth, up and down, without rhyme nor reason. Maybe you might have more luck!
