I really enjoy these deceptively simple games. This one had a lot
of play time to it, although of course one stops after one or two HOS, but the story line kept me coming back!
It seems a little darker this time, and I don't know that I like that; too much like every other game with a dark villain. Certainly we have a cliff hanger ending!
But I love the lighthearted animal town and the different characters they keep coming up with! I would like them to focus on that for the next game, or at least be aware thats what we fans are looking for.
And while we're at it, what's this thing with the collection of HO I keep finding and they're put on a page and saved? I've looked and looked but I couldn't find a pattern or a reason for them! Maybe next time we'll find out.
I highly recommend that game:)

Having lost your parents during a lightning storm as a child, you've held on to the amulet found with you. As an adult you now are having weird dreams; the amulet seems to be calling you back to the island home, where all is definitely not well.
This is an awesome game with blocks of areas on the map that are highlighted rather than specific hints, which is more of a challenge and more fun. Also the HOS are unique as there are two in one; never saw one like this before and you really have to hunt for the objects!
Excellent story line too, with only a few other characters, but they are well drawn and move the game along. Speaking of well drawn this is one of the most beautiful games I've ever played, well imagined and constructed and just fun to wander in.
Only one collectible, and although they have no on screen thingy to show if you have it, they are numbered in the SG so you can tell if you missed one, though they are hard to miss; only if you get distracted by the game and forget to look!
Also I discovered half way through the game a diary of sorts in the left lower corner right above the task lists. This can come in handy if you forget what something is supposed to do.
This is an older game and I found on my 'puter that I couldn't alt+tab out of the game, because then it froze my computer. Rebooting fixed that, but it was better to just quit and come back.
This is just an awesome game and I look forward to playing it again. It is so long and complex that I think I won't have to wait a year before I do:)
I highly recommend this game for HOG fans and for all those who like a beautifully illustrated story.
I recommend this game!

Considering this was published over 10 years ago, and longer when you consider it was made before that, this is a wonderfully creepy hog heavy game, almost too much so; I would have preferred a bit more adventure, but in this very long game and bonus game there is plenty of that too.
I mean, you get a hos almost every other scene, so in that regards it is unusual. The story line is rich and you are drawn in and fascinated by the characters.
I highly recommend this to HOG fans. Also the puzzles, although scarcer are totally doable and reinforce using logic:)
I recommend this game!

Wish they would give us old players a pass on all the instructions, since they basically haven’t changed in years. It is really annoying to have to wait until all the instructions are finished to get into the game - and they drag it out, putting in more instructions (again that are not new) for the first hour of the game. You can't even choose your own options until they finish giving their instructions!
Sadly, I’m disappointed in the quality of this years game. I kept coming across little mistakes – wrong name, wrong animal, trash that was ignored; at first I thought I was just imagining it, but after about the 10th incident I have to reflect that the teams' heart really isn’t in it anymore, and/or the QA department is sloughing off.
Still a great game but unfortunately it seems as if their best days are behind them.
I recommend this game!

So glad I was able to download this. First time I booted up it only gave me ¼ screen but after that I got a full screen every time. It took me around 8-9 hours to play.
This is a TOTALLY AWESOME game. It is classic SF/HOPA with great emphasis on the adventure, with the HOS bringing a nice break in the action and the puzzles were doable and didn't make you feel like an idiot.
A beautiful story, and _long_. I can’t believe this was made over 10 years ago! Others have given a synopsis of the story, but I must say this has a classic game feel to it. It is like the classic game of Myst, where you are on your own to figure out the world you find yourself in. I skipped the music (which is why I couldn't give 5 stars in that category - not their fault) but played space type music while I played the game, and it was perfect. If you love good SF, good story lines and classic HOS you need to get this game.
I didn't realize this had a CE version and I will be purchasing it for when I replay the game, which I surely will!
Highly, highly recommend!

Just finished the game and I must say it had one of the classic sudden endings that leave you wondering.
It's very much a hard look at hard life. The philosophy of the storyline could be life is hard, mean and unfair.
The HOS were basically just hunting for groups of objects. They were often a challenge.
The murder rate made sense to the story but it doesn't make for pleasant viewing. There is no sequel so I'm going to imagine that the truth came out and things were sorted, but that is definitely what the author of the story is _not_ suggesting.
An interesting game and the pace was brisk. The map is not interactive, but it does help you figure out where you are and what's going on. Hints are on the rarish side, but sufficient.
All in all an interesting and unusual game, but you of tender feelings be warned. This is definitely hard crime fact/fiction.
This dates back a few years, but those at this dev's place new good stuff and picked it. There's a reason these names keep coming up in my lists.
I recommend this game!

For those of you HOG lovers who've only been around BF for a short time, I recently got a whole bunch of oldie but goodie games, and I'll get the reviews up as fast as I can post them. You can see my reviews (or any reviewers) by clicking on my name in bold to the left of the review. Once you find someone whose tastes matches yours, its a great way to find new games. ANY way,
I got the SE version by mistake, but it is so fully satisfying that I don't regret the choice.
A woman is riding in a bus in a rural area of Kansas, when the bus crashes and she is thrown headfirst into a weird mystery, with lost children, a run down motel and angry owners. It's twisty-turny too, so don't be sure of all your facts too soon!
Of course like many of the early games this was made in probably the Ukraine or some other Russian type area - you can see it in the list of names in the credits. But these guys know their beans - just being able to realistically portray rural Kansas, which I assume most of them have never seen, is a feat.
There is an interactive map, and hints are reasonably paced so you won't get to impatient:)
So go ahead, use a credit, or even get the CE. You won't regret it!
I recommend this game!

Set again in the community of Goldstown. In a slight departure from the rest of the series, this game is a direct sequel to "The Raven".
Apparently the “reform” the Crows were going to have was short lived and now once again they are out of control and innocent people are dying. The detectives must outwit this outfit. And a slightly disappointing, if very “Poe-esque” ending. The cycle of greed, power and revenge is conquered for a time and then starts over again.
I missed two of the golden metal feathers, but discovered you only get to finish a puzzle that shows Poe’s study. Considering that I spent a good part of the game hunting for them it was very disappointing.
The voice actors were good, especially the very young ingénue voice of Lenore, a little over the top, but amusing.
I’m losing my respect for Dupin, at least in this iteration. He appears too willing to let his assistant lead and take risks, and more than willing to murder if he thinks it’s justified. Oh well, a good game all in all and kept me interested, with great pacing.
However, again, in regard to morphs and collectibles: they are nice but in cases like this, when it takes away focus from the game and makes the game less enjoyable, its benefits are moot. I think it's time to get back to focusing on the game and making it more interesting with more things to look for and do, and not just a random number of weird objects to find.
Still, if you are new to BF this is an excellent series and I recommend it highly.
I recommend this game!

Mostly it's just looking into an old mansion where people have disappeared and figuring out what went wrong. Lots of exploring around and figuring things out, which I like. This is a very well planned out game and is sure to please Hos lovers.
There are some beautifully created rooms, especially the ones where you went back in time and saw them. And if you can't figure out a puzzle, the game gives you a skip in a reasonable amount of time.
I recommend this game!

Beware if you have a "thing" about reptiles. This would give my old friend VB the "fantods" as she had a horror of snakes.
Anyway a sprightly adventure as you follow up on a friend who sent an emergency call for help from a small coastal town. I give the adventure aspect of the HOPA an A, as you get to discover what is going on. Lots of HOS to further along the game and the puzzles aren't too bad.
The drawing tends to be on the corny comic horror book side, but fits the subject.
I also liked the voice overs - the Brit had a true British accent, the mayor was wonderfully sinister with excellent diction, and our heroine didn't over do it with the screams.
Oh and the game is _not_ "9" but "?" (question mark, which rather does look like a number 9) so "? Clues: The Secret of Serpent Creek."
I highly recommend this older game!
