The game played easily and took place in an artistic setting with colorful and varied scenery and plenty of places to explore. The characters were well drawn and attractive but lacked a touch or personality and were rather stiff. It would have been nice if they had been a bit more lively and personable.
The story line was good but nothing extraordinary and though we were supposed to be partaking in an adventure, i did not feel overly engaged.
I did not like the map at all as it only told you what scenes had been completed and did not indicate which scenes had active tasks to complete. A very simplistic map to say the least.
The puzzles were fun and colorful, not to hard but fairly original. The HOPs were good also and varied. i am not a big fan of shadow clues and there were some of those but not too many.
I am not disappointed that i purchased the CE as i did enjoy the time i spent playing this game and the bonus chapter. I like fantasy games that are light and bright and this game fits the bill but i would not quite rate it a 5 star as it lacks some pzzazz !
I recommend this game!

Wonderful game ! Very enjoyable to play... just what i like, relaxing and just enough challenge to keep you involved in the adventure.
The Art work was Excellent, the music soothing and varied.
Lots of colorful and detailed scenes. The characters were lifelike as were the voice overs.
Puzzles were interesting and HOGs were well thought out, and choc full of variety and color.
If you want to spend some relaxing time in a lovely environment in the pursuit of discovery, this is the perfect game.
Although it is not the best game i ever played, it certainly was fun to play.
I recommend this game !

I originally played the CE version Demo and my review was rather negative. Was it because i expect more of a CE game and was disappointed or was it because the price of a CE did not seem warranted by the demo... hard to say ! The CE version was not bad, but it wasn't great either. So i decided to buy the SE version with a coupon that was expiring.
Well, I feel now, after completing the SE, that i made the right choice. The game, in SE version was a treat ... very enjoyable and i do not regret for one second having purchased and played the SE version.
The story line, though not amazingly original, was pleasant. The graphics were GREAT for an SE version, really detailed, colorful and creative. The characters were original personable and very well portrayed. The voice overs were very good.
The puzzles were quite varied, not to challenging but fun and very colorful. The HOGs were excellent, i really enjoyed them.... close to perfect for me
The map was so-so but acceptable for a SE. The game was not overly long, but not overly short either.
One thing that i found very positive was that the game itself was far more interesting than the demo. I found the demo a bit too childish (in the CE version) but once i got into the game (SE version) i found myself very involved and actually quite delighted with the artistic creativity of the scenery and characters. This was not the case in the demo.
So as a conclusion, i think that it is better to buy a SE on certain games when one is disappointed with the CE demo.
A CE should be reserved for exceptional games. This was a good game and became an exceptional game when one choose to play the SE version. Conclusion : I highly recommend this game in the SE version.

Made it through the demo.... but what a crying shame that we can't do better than this for a CE game !
The graphics and colors were nice enough but the game play was definitely nothing special ! No innovation really except for a chronometer that one reuses constantly to alter time... Do it once or twice ... ok but not constantly throughout the game (i only did demo .... cause i could take no more of it). The dialogs were inane : "help daddy help" and i did not get the feeling that i was in an adventure but in a cartoon.
I just don't understand a 5* rating on this nor do i understand why some devs keep putting out the same old, same old game play while other developers actually develop new and interesting games to play.
It seems to me lately that all the games that are sequels to a series are just rehashing the same stuff within different scenery.
I happen to like magical scenarios but it should have some coherence and not just a jumble of haphazard mumbo-jumbo. There were just too many scenes that were absurd and there was no fluidity to the story at all. I certainly wont pay CE prices for this, not even on sale !
I don't recommend this game.

I was quite excited when the game was released as i greatly enjoyed the earlier games in the series Amarinthine Voyage..... but my enthusiasm had waned before the end of the TOO SHORT demo. The demo itself was disappointing.
I hesitated to buy the CE, but then did as i really wanted to play a game this week end. As another reviewed said, it was not a total waste of time as i did play a game... but i really can't say that i enjoyed it tremendously...
Eipix has been producing a great number of games lately and, it seems to me, that neither their style nor their creativity are evolving. Too much of the same stuff with little to no real innovation in game-play. I also agree with another reviewer that i am getting a little tired of seeing that guy in the black robe at the beginning of each game and i'll even go a step further and say that when i see him, i know what to expect... more of the same, little to no WOW to be expected.
I love to be carried away by the adventure, awed by the artwork, moved by the characters and surprised by the creativity of a game. I do not like to do the same things repeatedly, game after game with little to no new or different. Its BORING !
I like fairytale scenarios, am ok with portals and even amulets but i want to be swept off my feet into a land of fun and fantasy and not shuffle through a phony feeling decor and execute an endless routine of moves that i have done over and over again in previous games. I would also like to share the adventure with characters that have some personality and that look and act lifelike, that have some pzazz or some humor ... something personable.
I found the game-play to be stilted and not very smooth or coherent. It was like an endless series of piecemeal objectives, a tad helter-skelter : go fetch this, go fetch that. Nothing seemed real or cohesive. It was almost as if there was too much going on but not enough real substance. Best summarized as : Much ado about nothing much !
With regards to the artwork in The Obsidian Book, although the colors were vivid at fairly appealing, i found that the art work lacked in detail and refinement. Years ago we played games such as Dark Parables where we enjoyed exquisite art work, It seems as if attention to detail is becoming a thing of the past and that the games are being produced with much less creativity. Eipix's artwork is a far cry from what it could be for the price we now pay for CE games.
As for the characters, i found them totally stiff and impersonal. Just two dimensional plastic cutouts that did not illicit any feelings.... No charm, no charisma ! No depth in the artistic rendition or the dialogue. I got the impression that the developer was doing the bare minimum.
The map was so so. It was a little glitchy in the sense that i often had to click several times to move to the location i wanted to go to. Also, i prefer a map that allows you to return to where you were by clicking on that location instead of telling you that you are already there.... and then having to exit the map. The developer could improve on the ease of use of the map and the players would greatly appreciate it.
The HOGs were ok although i don't really care for the silhouette clues in general and find them particularly annoying when one can't quite figure out what the heck the silhouette is supposed to represent, either because its so small or because it's just totally unrecognizable. Again, i prefer word lists where one has to imagine how the object listed will be represented. Its more challenging than squinting at a tiny black blob and clicking on everything in sight to see what that black blob could possibly be.
The puzzles were average. Not overly challenging, but varied enough and quite colorful for the most part.
No particular comment on the music... as it did not strike me as either great nor horrible.
All in all, I hope that this developer starts focusing on quality not quantity... because we are seeing quite a few games from them recently where the quality does not warrant the CE label. I'm starting to apprehend that i will be disappointed when i purchase a CE by Eipix and would much rather be excited knowing that i will be pleasantly surprised !
I recommend going for the SE in this game.

Being mostly bored with what BFG has been releasing lately.... I was so looking forward to playing a game that appeared to be a colorful and exciting new adventure.
Colorful it was, but certainly neither exciting nor exceptional enough to get me to invest in anything more than the free demo.
The story is ok, but we've played the same or similar scenarios for so long now (years) that one would hope to move on to plots that are a bit more imaginative. There have been a very few games in the past few months that have offered us some real adventure... too few and far between, but this is not one of them. I am in agreement with some other reviewers who viewed this game as childish or for beginners.
Although the art work was acceptable and quite colorful, the scenes lacked in depth and detail. Again, we have had games in the past that are a joy to play if only for the beauty of the scenery and their superior artistic quality.... Heart of the Beast does not fit that bill.
Though the characters are expressive and their voices are well done, they are nevertheless rather stiff, as is the decor in which they evolve. There is a lack of flow that makes every move feel jerky and lethargic.A good example is when the heroine Beatrice rides the horse to the circus.... the movement is awkward and totally unrealistic.
The map was ok, but at times it did not indicate the available action.... could be only a quirk, but there have been some very good games released, in the past few years, that have extremely well designed maps and its a let down to play with features that are not as good as they could be.
The HOGs were rather original in their concept but not overly inspiring due to a lack of artistic creativity. Again too basic.
As for the puzzles, some originality but .... easy, easy, easy with little to no challenge. Placing objects for a hobby horse to move from cardboard scene to cardboard scene.... just so uninteresting and boring... and with no artistic effort whatsoever.
Most of all, i found that the game play was slow and unexciting. Find an object, pick it up, put it in the inventory, place it in that scene or in the next one... and on and on and on. No feeling of adventure. Rather mechanical and mindless moving about in a decor that, though colorful and full of detail, was neither warm nor enchanting, nor realistic.
What bothers me is that this game is being put forth as a CE when it does not have the quality of a good CE game. Its not a bad game, but its just a basic game !
I do not recommend this game unless it is to be played by a young child and in that case the standard edition should suffice to entertain.
I don't recommend this game.

WOW !! I would give this game a 7+ star rating if i could. It was exceptional and i wish there were more games like this one.... i'd buy every one ! This developer should be encouraged! I agree with Sunnyglow, Ethan, 9 Otters and Daxidillion : this game is creative genius and other developers should take notes. And yes, this developer worked very hard on thinking outside of the box and giving us something different and first class all the way through. It truly is the breath of fresh air we have been waiting for !
I buy a lot of BFG .... and this is the best that i've played in a long long time.
BRAVO BRAVO to the developers. They most definitely put lots and lots of effort into this game to make it perfect and it was just about as close to flawless as one could wish for !
It is true that i prefer the fantasy games with a magical touch rather than the dark, somber and macabre ambiance with heavy doom and gloom decors and scenarios. But putting that aside, this game was beautifully designed and chock full of new and original challenges. I have never seen such a variety of innovation in any game in the past 5 years. This game had it all, and then lots lots more.
I did not think that the demo did it justice at all and therefore a rating based solely on playing the demo can not reflect the true value of this game. I had the impression that the more i progressed in the game the more involved it was and the more challenging it became. The more i was awed by the imagination and the variety of the game play.
This game was so entertaining and delightful that i did not want it to end..... so I was surprised and totally thrilled to discover how long it was. I played for hours just hoping it would continue, and it did !!!! A CE game should be worth the money you put into it, and on this game i definitely got my money's worth and then some ! Some of the CE games i have played lately (by Eipix for example) are so unacceptably short and repetitive that i was starting to get bored with what BFG offers these days. But "The Others" is really top quality game play!
I read the reviews before i buy a game.... someone said it was too easy ...) I certainly did not find it too easy. I had to put my thinking cap on plenty of times. On the other hand, it was not frustratingly difficult. There was logic involved and creative thinking but there were no situations that one would get stumped on due to poor visuals or incoherency. Everything flowed smoothly and one could really enjoy being "in" the story. And there were sooooo many different things to do. This game had it all !!!!
I don't feel that you can rate this game on just the demo. My feeling was that at every step you took or scene you discovered (and there were lots and lots of different and beautiful scenes) the engagement intensified. It may have started off simply but as you advanced, it carried you of into a superb adventure. I much prefer that to being engaged by a demo that wows you and then when you buy the game you find yourself in the same old same old repetitive story and games.
The story line was just the right balance between real and fantasy and one could become attached to the characters. They were very well drawn and quite attractive. Even the helper, a big troll, was very endearing. Also, the troll helper was not an annoying personage. He appeared at different times during the story but just for a scene or two to help you out... then went about his way. There was also another "helper" a very original gypsy man who spoke in rhythms and gave you powers in exchange of cards. He appeared now and then throughout the game but the exchanges with him were not repetitive in a boring way.... they were rather fun.
The art work was beautiful, imaginative and full of colorful detail.
The games were quite varied and there were many that i had never encountered before in my many years of game playing. Again, i feel that the developer really gave it his all to put out a game that had lots of creativity.
The HOG were clear and full of intelligent interaction. Here again the variety of innovation was so appreciated. They were not an endless rehash of "find the silhouetted (and barely recognizable item)" but rather a series of fun puzzles within the HOG.
The map.... well, it worked perfectly for me ! Though the game was designed in such a way that there was not a ridiculous amount of jumping around to do. For the most part, items found were used in a reasonable time and area so one did not have to drag stuff around for ages. But when one did have to go back or forth the map worked perfectly to transport you or to give you an idea of where there were tasks to complete.
The voice overs were close to perfect and the music well adapted and agreeable to listen to.
The Bonus Chapter maintained the quality, imagination and diversity of the main game. Furthermore it embellished the story and was synchronous to the main plot.
All in all a EXCEPTIONALLY WELL thought out game with great attention to detail and quality at EVERY level.
If you like colorful and imaginative fantasy games....
DON'T MISS THIS ONE. Its GREAT and its worthy of being classified as a Collectors Edition !
Thank you developers and .....PLEASE, PLEASE give us MORE games like this one !
I recommend this game!

Would give this one a full 5 stars, had it been a bit longer.
Otherwise the story was "fun". I was immediately engaged and stayed so til the end (which came to quickly !!!! )
The graphics were quite good, as was the music and effects. Nice Art deco ambiance, lots of variety and detail in the scenes that were aplenty.
Characters were realistic but i was a bit confused with who was who... (some looked a lot alike .. son and partner especially). Partner could have been blond, for example, so as to set him apart from the son who of course had a name similar to the father..... a tad confusing when trying to follow who did what and who done it.
The map was pretty good, it allowed you to move around and helped with where to go next. A little dark but quite ok.
One had to find cards.... most were fairly easy to find but some were really "so concealed or so unrecognizable" that they were almost impossible to find. It is great however is that after completing the bonus chapter, one has the possibility to go back and find the cards that were not found.
I did not enjoy the "bubble popper" game very much so i stuck to the HOGs that were original and interactive for the most part. The puzzles were not to hard, not to easy and except for one, the instructions were clear.
Bonus Game was good albeit very short.
It would have been a full 5 star game had it been longer.
I recommend getting when there is a sale !

This game was playable, but certainly not a winner in my book. The scenery was dark and the whole atmosphere was dreary. Too much back and forth with no help from a map. And a hint button that would only tell you that there was nothing to do here. So you went to the next scene to search, found nothing and consulted the hint again which only told you once more that there was nothing to do here either. This went on and on from scene to scene until finally the hint button showed you an area in the room you were in where an action was available. Several times in fact, the area the hint pointed out was not exactly where the action was and one had to try and figure out what it was really referring to. Very annoying and not worthy of a CE edition.
Instructions in many of the puzzles were vague and unclear.
I have NEVER referred to the strategy guide so many times in my years of playing BFGs !
The ending was disappointing in that the story just stopped with no clear idea of what really happened or didn't happen.
All in all i did not find the game play to be very refined.
As for the Bonus Game it was no bonus at all. The HOGs were unacceptably repetitious. The same scenes, with more or less the same objects to be found from one HOG to the next !!!! The instructions to the puzzles were VERY unclear and one had to do the same puzzle (with very minor variations) over and over again without a clear idea of how to solve it. It got so frustrating that I decided to skip four puzzles in a row (the strategy guide instructions being equally unclear) !! The problem then was that the hint button charged so slowly that one had to sit and stare at the screen while waiting for it to recharge... and this 4 times in a row for one game and 3 for another. Really !!!!
So, i do not recommend this game unless you really like creepy ambiances .... that it has ! And if you do get the game, save yourself some money and some disappointment and do not get the CE version.... it was a waste of time, money and energy.
I don't recommend this game.

I considered this game to be good "rainy day fare" but nothing to get excited about as it was not really exceptional. Of good quality, the general atmosphere was nevertheless rather "been there, done that". I was hoping that a successful developer would invest in designing more innovative and creative game-play, to keep the players really enthralled, when offering a new installment of a series.
+ The story line was up to par but nothing really out of the ordinary either.
+ The graphics were good, a tad dark for my tastes.
+ The HOGs were enjoyable, they were intelligently designed, fun to do and required actions that were new and innovative.
+ The puzzles were, for the most part, fun and all the instructions were clear.
+ I found the voices of the "Good Witch heroine" to be annoying and her comments of no interest. They tended to grate on you and did not fit into the general ambiance.
+ The interactive map could be improved upon. It was functional but the visuals could definitely be improved upon so that the player can clearly see where to go next when lost. The small exclamation point that indicates available actions does not stand out enough in my opinion.
The game did hold my attention and i do not regret having bought it. However, by the time i got to the bonus content, i was starting to get a little bored.
I was looking forward to being able to play some of the matching games that i had not played during the game (I find it hard to make the choice : HO or matching). Unfortunately, i was not able to find a way to replay the HOGs at the end of the game so.... i was not able to play the matching games as i was hoping to.
I also like it when i can go back over the game to concentrate on finding the morphing objects or puzzle pieces that i missed during the game. In this game that did not seem to be possible either. The jigsaw puzzles that i did complete during the game were not challenging at all (most of the pieces being edges.... well there was not much figuring out to complete the puzzle).... disappointing !
Basically, i think its was a better than average game but nothing exceptional.
I recommend this game!
