The Brothers Grimm have assigned the task of revealing the truth behind missing children in the town of Arbourshire; it is up to you to discover the secrets of the Fairy Tale Mystery, before it is too late.
I had forgotten this was originally issued as a CE. It was only when I began the trial today that I was reminded of the expanded version. As an IHOG Puppet Thief does not break any new ground. Children have been kidnapped by the bad guy and it is the players duty to foil the villain and rescue the kids. The HOG scenes are simple and what few puzzles encountered in the demo are also easy to navigate. There is a lot of running around in the game which is basic to most IHOGs. A map would have been nice. The graphics are well conceived and the voiceovers add to the overall effect. There are some games that I like to purchase since I can play them with my 6 year old grandson. Since this entry has a certain fantasy element I'll add the game to my repertoire. A lot of HOGgers might find this game too easy and others might be put off by the fact FTM:PT adds nothing original to the genre. I would probably pass on it were it not for the aforementioned grandson. These games are good teachers on many planes, so those of you with youngsters should always consider the kids. The best part is the interaction and bonding with the child.
I purchased Shadow Lake as a CE, something I rarely do since I do not find most of the extras to be worth doubling the cost. My feeling is that Shadow Lake suffers from being an MCF entry. Consider MCF history. Most everyone loves Madame Fate which by today's standard is a run of the mill game. Return to Ravenhearst broke new ground with the inclusion of live actors. This was continued with Dire Grove, 13th Skull and last years Escape game. My feeling is if Shadow Lake were the brainchild of any other developer, more players would be raving about it. We come to expect new and better things from MCF. There is a lot of hype prior to issue because it only issues one game per year.
There is much to admire about Shadow Lake. I find the story compelling. The hidden object scenes and the puzzles are well done. The live actors add to the development of the game. Overall my thought is that gamers should not expect the folks at MCF to reinvent the wheel. This is not my favorite MCF game. Yet it is superior to more than half of the new games that have been released in 2012.
I do not normally buy CE versions but after the trial of Brink I had to have it straight away. Brink is a combo of HOG and adventure. The characters when they move from place to place do not have a wooden clunky motion so prevalent in adventure and large file games. This is a major plus.
The best part of the game, although some people might be put off by it , is the length of the dialogue among the characters. The game is very British and in playing it I feel like I'm watching a really good murder mystery on the telly. The upside is I get to assist the detective by finding things and doing tasks to make progress in solving the crime.
The HOG scenes are well done with some items in the list cleverly hidden. The minigames and puzzles are all doable without any hair pulling exasperation. I have yet to play the bonus chapter so I cannot comment on it's value. I have been playing PC games for 7 yrs. My alltime favorite is Return to Ravenhearst. Brink of Consciousness: Lonely Hearts now ranks as a very close second. Brink is a very brilliant diamond which should be in the repetoire of all gamers who enjoy HOG style games.
Louis the Clown and Mr. Dudley are back in an all-new adventure! Travel through the dark corners of history's most famous fairytales to rescue children trapped in a frightening netherworld!
Just yesterday I bought WP: Broken Tunes for $2.99. Well worth it by the way. The second installment, based on the one hour demo, seems to be better. Our buddy Louis Gauche and his tiny crony Loki are at it again. Louis is bent on revenge once again stemming from perceived slights against him. This time he's kidnapping children. Our job is to stop him and complete a rescue mission. The HOG scenes are decent with a few objects cleverly placed. Some of the puzzles are novel and none too hard to fathom. Most players will be glad the hint feature recharges a bit faster than in the first installment. WP:ST is a fine game, not an A+ grade ( play Brink of Consciousness: Lonely Hearts for that ), it does get a solid B grade. As an SE version and with a 30% discount today, it's worthy of a purchase. Nice work dev. !!
review based on demo. Every now and again some reviewers complain about hidden objects being too hard to find and that the screens are too dark. No dev can please everyone. I for one enjoy some games that challenge the player to search more carefully for the objects which are generally " hidden in plain sight ". As far as the darkness of the game, keep in mind the setting of GT3 is around 1787, no electricity and not a whole lot of candles in each room being explored. I realize though that some folks have poorer eyesight which can minimize their enjoyment of a game. The storyline is spot on and the use of certain clues within that allow the main character to deduce the mystery adds to said storyline. I have 2 minor gripes. One is the occasional use of voiceovers ( well done ) but then there are other times when conversations are silent. Give us one or the other but not both. Devs, please keep the objects to be found in line with the time period of the game. We're in the 18th century yet one item to be found is a Harry Truman dime !! All in all GT3 is as good as its predecessors and is worthy of our attention. I have a couple of free games coming to me and will use a freebie for GT3.
I recommend this game!

Unfinished Tales: Illicit Love
After the Raven Queen crashes her wedding, Thumbelina must save her prince to reclaim her happy ending!
Review based on demo which took me 33 minutes to finish. I didn't think I would like the game and was I ever wrong. UT:IL is a gem. The first place that grabbed me was the Hall of Seasons. The concept of morphing into another season is a great one from the dev. The dialogue, especially from our sassy bad girl, is clever. The evil one compares Thumbelina's name to a body part in berating her and asks if she has a sister called Fingerina. Love that. The HOG scened are not hard and the puzzles so far are easily doable. The biggest appeal to me is the fact that I can play it with my 6 yr. old grandson. He likes the fantasy based games such as the Awakening series. I like the fact that it forces him to think outside the box and use some deductive reasoning. He is not too keen on the finding hidden objects but is charmed by all other aspects of games. I will purchase this game for my little guy. Players with youngsters and grandkids should jump at UT:IL and those of you outside of that group ought to at least do the demo. This is not the best Elephant game but it grades out at a solid B+.
I recommend this game!

Alexander the Great: Secrets of Power
It’s up to you, a descendant of the ancient emperor, to collect powerful artifacts and save the world. Dive into the whirlpool of thrilling mysteries to unlock the secrets of ancient power!
Had this game been issued 4 yrs. ago I probably would have bought it without any hesitation. However what with all the good games with superior production values that are out today, Alexander just doesn't cut it. I noticed something at the onset of the game when Alexander himself is introduced. The man is from the Middle East part of the planet yet the devs have him blond and blue eyed. Just this alone is a sign that the devs are not practicing due diligence.. The HOG scenes are a bit better than average with some items cleverly hidden in plain sight. The mini games and puzzles are ( at least in the demo ) way to easy. The story line mixes a supposed reality with fantasy. One of the items that A the G owned and which our detective must find is a crown owned by none other than Hercules. While A the G was a real man, Herc has always been a myth. Another sign the devs are not doing their homework and this dev has issued some fine games . The best part of A the G is the use of stunning graphics. There are some long winded voice overs and the talkers lips move in a bogus fashion. As my review title indicates, this might be an ok game for players fairly new to the genre. For most HOGgers with experience, this game falls short of the mark. Judge for yourself.
The residents of Bitterford, Maine have fallen prey to a terrible curse. It’s up to you to unravel the series of mysterious events that led to the town’s downfall and uncover the evil that was responsible.
We gamers always look forward to the latest MCF entry. I only did the demo ( in 43 minutes ) and was pleased with what occured during that time. Now even MCF devs cannot satisfy everyone's tastes and I doubt they even attempt to do so. What they do better than all the other devs is introduce something novel to the genre. Examples: the live actors here are more convincing than in other entries. Lea Thompson is having a good time hamming up her scenes and I found her to be lots of fun. I liked the idea of the need to search different locations for one group of hidden objects. Lots of other reviewers have given lots of fine detail about this game so I won't add to that part of the discussion. This is not my favorite MCF game , Return to Ravenhearst is tops for me and for lots of other gamers. Having said that, Shadow Lake appears at first blush to be a very good game. Based on the demo, it is more an adventure than a HOG. I'll probably pass on the CE but will certainly acquire the SE later on. Since RTR is such a fan fave for most HOGgers, perhaps MCF can in the future go back to the style that made that game such a gem. Remember that it is not necessary to constantly try to outdo yourselves. As the old saw goes: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I recommend this game!

Journey: The Heart of Gaia
After being kidnapped, Liz must free the Underworld from the tyranny of Scartaris Umbra.
In reading the blurb describing Journey I thought this would not be to my liking. I am glad to have decided to do the trial demo ( took 47 minutes to complete ). For the non HOG people, there is not one in the trial so I assume there are none in the entire game. This is set in a fantasy world and our heroine ( does the protagonist always need to be female??) must save that world from the villain in order to be returned to her own. She collects items along the way to help in her escapade and meets new colleagues who provide assistance. In the demo, a muscle bound dude named Grump smashes things that our gal cannot get beyond herself. Puzzles galore in Journey, some easy and some hard. The hint and skip meters are slower to refill than in most games but the object of any game is to avoid hints and skips. I will purchase primarily for one reason. My 6 year old grandson loves playing HOGs save for finding the hidden objects. Journey with its cartoonish setup will certainly appeal to him and any youngster. Games of this ilk are terrific for the continued development of young minds by making them solve tasks. My feeling is that all kids in the 5 to 10 age group will be thrilled by Gaia and a lot of us older kids should feel likewise. Definitely give this gem a shot.
I am somewhat conflicted about the game. It definitely has its ups and downs. The ups include: very good graphics, some objects that are hard to find, some interesting things to fine and background music that is acceptible. The downs are: a clunky cursor, ( at least in my case ), the game is slow to progress between scenes, all the typical puzzles ( matching, jigsaws, the dreaded find the difference, etc. ) The storyline is predictable and not at all compelling,
Given the multitude of outstanding games available today, Halloween : The Pirate's Curse is fair to middling. It will appeal to novice HOGgers and children. If it ever becomes a daily deal I would probably buy it at the reduced price. Other than that I will pass. I do not hate the game but it holds only moderate interest for me. I give it a half-hearted recommendation.
