Generally I play a game demo to its conclusion as there are times when a game starts out slowly and then picks up steam.
Could not bring myself to the same conclusion with Lantern of Souls. For starters, the character drawing is definitely a throwback to games we had available 6-7 years ago. This is the first indication of the age of the game. Either that or the developer has not the ability to draw and animate a more refined character.
As a brief synopsis, a newspaper reporter ventures to the home of a recent widow who herself has now been slain.
Naturally the security guard provides her with a key to enter what is a crime scene. Give me a break !! One of the first things we see is a gramaphone. Since the setting is the 1950's, a hi-fi is more appropriate.
Next we are faced with the all too common tasks many of us are tiring of. Placing a newspaper under a door and using a needle to acquire the key, obtaining a screwdriver to remove screws in a place where screws just should not be, finding a code to open a safe with an unusual combination, etc.
Then it took so long to crack the safe with a myriad of shapes to configure merely to gather a needed item. The boredom is quickly gathering pace folks.
I didn't encounter a single traditional HO segment as I had already abandoned New York Mysteries with the opinion the game is rather dreadful. The only hint of any game modernity is the inclusion of morphs and collectible cards. It doesn't help.
Had the game been offered in 2008 rather than 2016 I still would have given it an enthusiastic thumbs down.
I don't recommend this game.

I do not much recall the previous installments of the Whispered Secrets series. If that is the case then the prior games didn't do anything to become even a little bit lodged into my memory bank. A gender neutral investigator is summoned to an insane asylum a part of which is totally engulfed in flames. Upon arrival the sleuth is asked by the fire brigade to do their job. ( Glad I don't live in that town ) A small portion of the conflagration is watered down and the game moves to an adjacent connected section of the asylum when a man who turns out to be Barney, an employee of the sanitarium, is captured by a fog enshrouded being. This begs the question: Why would anyone in their right mind consider entering a building during a raging fire? Definitely not me!! The only other character of substance met during the demo is the ghost of Angelina. Is she a victim? Is she psychotic? Why is she so ostracized by the director and staff of the asylum?
The story is one seen lots of times with a child being the center of attention in the decidedly macabre games. Grandma Games doesn't win an originality prize.
What saves the game is the game play itself. Hidden object scenes are very well done. I particularly liked one where after locating a cube piece it it put into the cube held by the girl and then silhouetted items such as a clock face, a statue, a horse, a gate part etc. must be found and then placed where they belong in the cube. Using an arrow the player can rotate the cube. I also liked that in one puzzle the player gets to choose which way to tackle getting a mouse thru a maze. Overall these and other factors make the Everburning Candle a solid entry. Collectible circles are for the taking. Personally, I have spent more time recently replaying games than purchasing new offerings. I am on the fence about this one, mostly due to the fact the story does not light my FIRE.
I recommend this game!

A couple of weeks ago Fantasy Mosaics got a new rival with the World's Greatest Places grids. WGP added some novel and needed elements in the griddler genre. With the addition of a fourth color, the FM series breaks new ground in a fashion that I am sure all lovers of this series have been anticipating. As has always been the case with FM's, challenging grids appear at the outset. Nothing is more aggravating than to be forced to complete a bunch of 5x5 or 10x10 puzzles often foisted upon us by the inferior grid games.
I also like that a couple of new colors are in evidence, one being an off-white and the other resembling peach or mango. This is a sure fire winner in my book and an instant purchase. Thanks again to a really good developer.
I recommend this game!

I rarely enjoy the vampire themed games for the simple reason that most of them are endless repetitions of their predecessors.
Vampire Legends: Count of New Orleans is a cut above the rest and for a variety of reasons. I like that at the start this tale doesn't skimp on the gruesomeness of the story. The Carter brothers are serial killers ( when has any game begun with this premise ) who are finally brought to justice when their last intended victim ( Beatrice Lefort ) escapes from captivity and leads police to the murderers who are executed a year after being apprehended.
Fast forward 6 years and an investigative reporter named Angeline travels to New Orleans to check out strange goings on reputed to be connected to the Carters. We get to perform tasks in her hotel room, go to a souvenir shop to play a game in order to acquire a cable car ticket that leads us to Beatrice's home. Using an amulet given to her, Angeline protects Beatrice from ghostly hands attempting to abduct her. Angeline then meets an old cemetary worker who provides information and a map, one that needs to be constructed in a challenging jigsaw style puzzle. That map is used later on in another excellent puzzle when the reporter is navigating thru the mausoleum area. The demo ends when she opens up a crypt and is accosted by Count St. Louis, a vampire.
I really enjoyed the aforementioned puzzles and there is another fine one played to open up St. Louis' crypt. The hidden object segments are routine in appearance but not so in substance. The very first one requires a decent amount of thought. I liked the use of N'Awlins accents. The use of bayou country patois is refreshing. What I didn't care for is the amateurish drawing of the game characters. A bit more realism here would induce me to grant this a 5 star rating.
The terrific puzzles ( hope they continue ) is what will bring me to select this game as part of BFG's 2 for 1 sale today the date being 3/26/16.
If there are collection items, and/or morphs I found none during the demo. The game doesn't need any. Personally I just need to find a second game to go with this one as part of the weekend sale.
Happy Easter and Passover to those who celebrate these occasions.
I recommend this game!

World's Greatest Places Mosaics is a breath of fresh air in the realm of grid puzzle games. It is unique in that each 5 grid segment contains 5 different kinds of puzzles. The first is a 3 color grid ala Fantasy Mosaic. The second is a simple one color grid. Then the fun and the difficulty starts. The third segment involves correctly placing shapes. These include squares, hexagons and circles. We are told how many of each shape is needed on both vertical and horizontal lines, the hard part, and I do mean hard, is where do the shapes go. Fortunately there is a hint available and the hint recharges very quickly. The fourth segment requires swapping squares in a tri-color grid. This is probably the most confusing of the 5. If a square can be relocated it is highlighted and the player then can move it to a spot consistent with the vertical or horizontal numbers located outside the grid. The one flaw in segment 4 is that 2 slightly different shades of dark blue are used, at least in the second group of five. The last part of a section uses bombs. It is just like the old game Minesweeper. Hit a bomb and the level fails.
The game as a whole has a tutorial which is a bit confusing. This tutorial is absolutely necessary.
When I play Fantasy Mosaics and I have most of the 13 issued to date, I rarely rely on hints. With this new game, hints will be a much needed ally. If there is a downside to this clever game it is that the game title doesn't live up to itself. When a grid is finished there is no indication of any place at all. Nevertheless this griddler is so novel and so challenging that it is a must have for those of us who enjoy
mosaic style games. Give it a shot but be warned: this is a hair puller for sure.
I recommend this game!

I tried to stay with this game's demo but I left with a bit over 1/2 hour left. To continue risked falling asleep and I just do not feel like napping. A few things bugged me about this tedious effort. When a game is set in a reality based setting I get annoyed when the developer invents a location. In this case it is the fictional country called Isenberg. Sounds Germanic yet the characters speak unaccented English and the sheriff is named Aiden a moniker certainly not suited to the location.
Another problem for me is the dark blue atmosphere prevalent in just about all screen shots. Furthermore, our lady detective has a kit that holds various chemical solutions. One would think she'd have a complete supply of materials, but no, she must find them along the way during her investigation. If this is the case, she cannot be a very thorough gumshoe.
Technically the game seemingly devised by a new developer has a very old look to it. Characters are not crisply drawn, the scenery is rather clunky and for me the cursor was rather stiff. The story line is old hat. A group of women have disappeared. In fact when the latest lady goes missing, the sheriff calls her hotel room a crime scene. Someone merely out of a room does not a crime scene make because there is nothing indicative of criminal activity.
In the 1/2 hour I lasted there was but one hidden object segment and the only thing approaching a puzzle was making a solvent using kit bag items. YAWN !!
I would suggest that fellow players seeking a decent mystery game look into their personal archives. Yesterday I replayed The Mystery of Marie Roget which is an excellent whodunit.
Mountain Trap 2 is a snoozefest. Avoid it.
I don't recommend this game.

The Myths of the World series has been one of the better sequential sagas that Eipix has developed over the years.
Each game stands on its own unlike other series such as Grim Tales wherein each game is essentially a chapter in an evolving book. Born of Clay and Fire centers on the ancient art of alchemy. Set in Prague the player must discover who is behind the creation of the Claymores. They are indestructible entities capable of untold good or evil determined by who controls them. Obviously these creatures have fallen into the wrong hands. The player learns that his/her father has been arrested and is condemned to death for his alleged involvement via alchemy and the resulting doomed experiments that have released the Claymores to wreak havoc in Prague. As in all HOPAs, someone a lot more sinister is behind the evildoing. The demo does not offer any more than a couple of cryptic clues as to who this person is.
I really like the story and as usual Eipix has crafted a game which is graphically and visually very well done. The hidden object segments are varied in style. They require a level of interactivity and there is decent challenge within them. As to the puzzles, I have a problem with some of the instructions for 2 of those in the demo. It might have been just me being a bit dense in my inability to decipher said instructions. Nevertheless this is the reason the game gets 4 rather than 5 stars.
There are morphs in the hidden object scenes, collectible fire symbols ( 45 in all ) and small animal sculptures scattered in some areas of the scenery. A good jump map is included.
This edition of the Myths series does not provide me with the same degree of WOW factor as its predecessors. For this reason, I'll either avoid it entirely or wait for the SE version. Any game must absolutely knock my socks off to make it an immediate must have. Personally, with hundreds of games in my personal inventory, it gets harder for me to "need" a game. I spend much more time replaying games I own than pursuing new ones.
Speaking to another issue and so that other players do not make the same mistake I did last week, I minimizes a trial when taken away by a lengthy phone call. Upon returning to the demo I learned the trial time period was not paused and had expired. Quitting a demo is the only way to not lose remaining minutes.
I recommend this game!

It has been quite a while since an art restoration game has been issued. Years ago players were given a few of these efforts. The nice part was seeing lots of fantastic artwork, the bad part was most if not all were the dreaded spot the difference style games.
Hunt for Red Panda to its credit abstained from using spot the difference techniques. I liked the humor injected into the defiled paintings. Putting a clown nose on a refined lady, an army helmet on a dog, a line of clothes drying as a background, etc. are nice touches. For me the worst part of the game is the inclusion of the bug that can be swatted. To do so requires dropping the solution, the eraser et al to smash the insect. It got to the point I merely ignored the bug entirely.
Another egregious faux-pas and that which renders the game a no sale for me is that the player cannot proceed to a new museum ( the game starts in the USA ) until gold stars are acquired for correcting all 10 paintings in the museum.
I also feel the game can become a bit tedious after a while because there is lots of repetition as to which errors need correction. Too many microphones, helmets, army tanks and so on.
I'll give the game a mild recommendation for imagination. It is certainly a game that can be played with youngsters if for no other reason than to introduce kids to the world of fine art. If I may use a school grading system, the game deserves a B-.
I recommend this game!

If I want werewolf adventures my first inclination is to watch a Lon Chaney movie. Those were good. I can recall vividly that sweet old gypsy lady portrayed by Maria Ouspenskaia how Chaney's character was affected by being bitten by a werewolf and what he needed to accomplish to deliver himself.
The games in the SWM series have been to me somewhat mediocre. Initially the first couple of chapters held some interest, then repetition set in and I became bored.
In this installment Neil, his wife and baby have been abducted by some druid-like sect. Apparently the baby is instrumental in delivering the community of Wolfhill from THE BEAST. Whoopteedoo!!
I just don't care.
The hidden object segments are run of the mill, the puzzles found in the demo are some which I personally dislike. They involve rotating segments of circles in order to complete a picture. Another similar one had us rotating windmill sections to color coded areas. BAH!!
ERS games generally have grainy imaging which is something else I'd rather not see. Within the story when Neil and the wife are rescued by the player, neither seemed too concerned their infant was still in the clutches of the bad guys. That was way too cavalier for me. I guess you have figured out by now that I don't like this game. Maybe I'll go to an online source for movie rental and find me a good werewolf film.
I don't recommend this game.

I have not been enamored of most of the Grim Tales. The Heir is definitely a cut above the rest. Merely from recall of prior demos I have the gist of the overall story line if each game in the series can be considered as individual chapters in a long novel. In The Heir Anna is summoned to Gray Castle where she learns that her cousin Brandon, his wife and son Billy are the latest victims in this sinister house. The wife has been poisoned and left immobilized, Billy has been abducted by a hooded man who takes on various facial images. Brandon is nowhere to be seen.
Anna searches many rooms in the castle. She acquires items. Some merely by picking them up, others by performing tasks via hidden object and puzzle scenes prevalent in all HOPAs. I liked the variety in the HO segments yet there was nary a traditional word list in the demo ( I finished it with 3 minutes to spare ). Some of the puzzles are very clever with my favorite being realigning more than a dozen portraits based on the shape of the shield backing each member of the Gray family, most of these being of particular importance in prior games.
At one point Anna is confronted by an apparition of someone she has killed in an earlier game. He indicates he is there to help Anna, that remains to be seen. This specter provides Anna with information and tools to venture into the future. Her success there is vital to stopping Brandon from slaying his wife and child. The demo ends with Anna's unsuccessful attempt at tranquilizing Brandon who is set on performing a ritual.
Story lines are for me a critical aspect of a terrific game. Though we have seen similar stories in hundreds of other games, the flow of this story as it winds its way into the game is very well done.
For players who have loved or strongly liked prior Grim Tales, this chapter should be a strong one. For folks like me who have not been totally absorbed by earlier games, appreciate the fact that The Heir can stand alone and be enjoyed for what it offers in and of itself.
For enthusiasts of extras we have collectible jigsaw pieces,
Grim Tale character figurines and morphing objects.
I find The Heir not as " grim " as some of its brethren as to its play ability, therefore I strongly recommend it.
I recommend this game!
