just not for me. it was easy, boring and slow moving. i played the demo and thought it'd get better by the end of the hour based on the rave reviews. i found the game mechanics a bit awkward and the story didn't grip me.
that's why they make vanilla and chocolate - i'm the chocolate here!

many reviews have come before this. because of them i purchased this game. i am pleasantly suprised! every time i click on something, expecting that i need another piece to open the door, for example, i don't! instead there is a puzzle! i was suprised by this so many times that when a mundane thing did happen (i had to sharpen a tool) i thought it wasn't becoming to this game at all. i figure i'm more than halfway thru and it only happened once. yes, the scenery is beautiful and i enjoy it very much!
what can i say that hasn't already been said???? this series is the best! voice overs weren't synced but i forgive that. the mechanics were great. i've read many people are having trouble playing for various reasons (i hope they get the help) but the game ran smoothly for me. there is a problem with the achievements not showing up. i am missing a few. i hope a patch is in the works. this game was middle of the road in easy/hard. HOS and mini-games were easy. i actually had a harder time figuring out what to use where! that's what i like in an adventure game! i'm really glad these devs know what kind of game we want and are creating them for us! give yourselves a pat on the back for this game!

this game has an interesting story line which kept me playing the full hour of the demo. i was hoping that the play would get faster and the voice-overs wouldn't be so flat but it never did. slow going into scenes, "complete" after games and hogs.... all slowing the game. also, voice overs interupt the flow of the scenes. they can be skipped but sometimes include info you need. the magnifying glass is too helpful and you can't choose to get rid of it. i can't recommend this game except for beginners.
i don't understand why my 2 favorite reviewers here gave this game 5 stars??? did they play the same demo??? normally i don't review on a demo but! game mechanics were bad for starters. combining 2 inventory items is just lazy on the dev's part. that's easier for them than to have us find a scene where we can do that. what's up with the characters??? out dated!!!! let's see some reality! some lip movement even!!! and let's keep to the era!!! things can't exist in the 18th century if they weren't invented until the 20th century!!! the HOS were junk piles and some items couldn't be found, even when i moved my screen from bright to a bit dark. i hate finishing it and then having to find 1 more item. what is that??? seperate chapters and i couldn't back track to see the scenery??? i love doing that!!! horseshoes are fun to find but that's all this game has going for it. not even a map to be had!!! i played on hard, as usual, took my time to enjoy everything but all i found was disappointment and frustration at the slowness and, frankly, the stupidity of play.
I don't recommend this game.

based on demo: i played on hard and enjoyed it. good story line, journal and jump map. it's not a challenging game and judging from the walk through, about 3 hours in length - for me and i take my time to enjoy it all. i won't be buying it due to the length but if it comes on sale i will.
i played on expert mode, so no sparkles and hints recharged slowly. no HOS was great. the scenery, music, images, and voice overs were excellent. i took my time, enjoying everything. it took me 3 days to complete. don't know just how long but i played at least 2-3 hours each day. i had to use the strategy guide a half dozen times or so just because i didn't want to wear out my sneakers. there is no teleporting map, which would have made the game more fun and the map doesn't show all the places. if it did, i wouldn't have needed the strategy guide. kudos to the devs for making such a game as this. i hope there are more like it. don't forget to play the demo before buying. it's not for beginners.

Demo review.
The game was smooth, graphics and music good....... I enjoyed playing the hour but.......... I was halfway through the game! Not going to buy it for another 1 hour of play!
I didn't find anything challenging as so many others did. Perhaps I should consider myself an expert now, but I play for the fun of it and, while I do love a challenge, I don't enjoy a hard game - not relaxing, and I don't like such an easy and short one as this game is.
I suggest playing the demo to see for yourself. I recommend it only because it was clever.

I just came across the sequel and was suprised that I remembered I played this game many years ago and played it again!! It is different, and some would think slow, but the story captured me and kept my interest throughout the game.
If you're not into following the story, reading the text, then you will be bored. I can best describe it as an interactive novel. It is quite long and a good buy for the $$$. Play the demo and see if you like it cos not everyone will....

I played the demo because i could get the game for $4 but didn't like it at all. Main reason is the HOS. Items to find are small and hidden behind other things. You're provided with a zoom, which is helpful.... but I needed it for most of the objects. My complaint is if the devs knew you'd need the zoom, why didn't they just make the objects larger??? Other than that I still didn't like how the game was played out. Not difficult but kinda stupid to be honest!
I wouldn't even recommend this game for a beginner!
