This was my first time management game and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was cheery and challenging. I played on the relaxed level. You are doing multiple things at once so it takes some coordination and attention to detail. The music was bright as were the graphics. I found that I kept going back to play more and more levels rather than the serious grim other game I have recently purchased. Its different and fun !
I recommend this game!

Yes, in my opinion, there were too many HOS. But overall I enjoyed the storyline, visuals, Mr. Dupin. I believe this was the first in the series and each one has gotten better and better. I also enjoy voice overs which this did not have. But I believe it was created in 2009. As the story progressed, the items in the HOS got smaller. Still much better than the depressing monsters in so many of the games. I'm glad I bought it. If you like Poe, you should include this in your Poe games.
I recommend this game!

I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this game from the story line to the graphics to the music, to the intrique. It really kept my interest. For my playing, it had a couple of drawbacks which I'm sure are included in the CE. I really needed some kind of direction on where to go next. This game has a separate Strategy Guide that you buy. Fortunately, there is a very clear explanatory free Walkthrough available. So in this case I had to keep going from the game to the Walkthrough and back to the game. I didn't realize Dire Grove had a Collector's Edition with a Strategy Guide included in the price. I definitely recommend it. The game is challenging. And the Hint button is only available on the hidden object locations and is slow. I needed it all the time. I still loved the game, but, for my play, will not buy a game in the future without a fast refreshing active "Hint" button available throughout the entire game. I usually buy CE's and I use all the extra help as in Strategy Guides plus enjoy the Bonus Chapters.
I recommend this game!

Review based on completed CE and Bonus Chapter. I thoroughly loved this game. Gorgeous graphics are my thing. Only one darker scene. I hate dark, depressing games and will not buy them. The rest of the game was visually and artistically superb. I notice that they had, I believe, ten different music pieces for the game. You can review them at the end. I, too, turned the music down, but I always prefer it softer. But the music was well suited for each scene. I always play on casual mode. I used both the hint button and the map to direct myself. I prefer a "jump" map but this was not one, still very helpful. The HOGs were beautifully colorful and easy to find. They were all pieces of items which morphed into a complete item when finished. Then you used those items to further your game. These screens of HOGs did have a number of items but I would not describe them as junk piles at all. They were fragments of jeweled crowns and headdresses and jewelry, etc. I had some trouble with a few of the puzzles and wished I had more help. I often do need help on puzzles. The story flowed very well, and I never got bored. The bonus chapter was generous and was a prequel. You certainly got a lot for your money in the CE. Other than my wish for a "jump" map, I completed the game feeling very satisfied and realizing the work had been done by highly skilled artisans. A work of art.
I recommend this game!

I couldn't wait to be finished. I debated about just deleting it but I'd paid for a CE. Graphics were very noticeably depressing. Grey, dirty atmosphere. Dirty filthy looking broken down cars and buildings. I thought..."and I paid to be depressed?" The storyline was also a downer about the death of a child. It made me very sad. I wish I could have gotten my money back. Had to use the hint button a lot because the story didn't flow well for the player to have some kind of idea of there own as to where to go next. Good voiceovers and cut scenes. Technically well done. But I do not understand how it got to be number one for so many weeks. That was what influenced me to buy it. Probably the worst game for me in the past year.
I don't recommend this game.

I really enjoyed this game on all the levels. I like to play on casual level. The graphics were great, colorful and clear. It had good atmosphere from the sound effects and the music. It was never dreary or dark or creepy. There were no monsters or skulls. It had a good story line of solving a case. Detective Dupin was good looking and very dapper. All the voice-overs were well done as were the cut scenes. The game was technically well executed. The music graphics, fast hint refresh, a very good strategy guide which I used a lot. It did not have a graphic map, but I didn't get crazy on going back and forth, The story kept my interest. And the bonus chapter furthered the story. Also, there was not an over abundance of HOGs which made me very happy. Also, the HOGs were very clear and the items were large and not overly difficult but enjoyable, which I liked because I just want to get through HOGs. I had some trouble with some of the games, but that's just me, not the fault of the games. All in all, I felt this game was very well executed and enjoyable. Glad I bought the CE. Good product and I would definitely recommend it.

The reason why I enjoyed this games particularly more than other games was because it didn't have any depressing scenes in the graphics. Nothing dark and creepy. Who needs that. I'm very visual and musical so this game really appealed to me on both of those levels. I want to thank the developers for not overloading too many HOs. The HOs were relatively easy but enjoyable, because HOs are something I just want to get through. There was more story and games by far than HOs. To me, the whole game was very pleasant with a good plot. Yes, there was a bad guy, but he was nice looking...just off his rocker. Music was soothing and lovely which made me play longer each time. I completely enjoyed the bonus game which was really the completion of the story, so I recommend buying the CE. Had a great and thorough Strategy Guide and very useful map which I used both a lot. I really liked being able to click on the map to go directly to a location and not have to go back through three previous screens to get where you needed to go. The Help button refreshed very quickly. Only had one question, in the original game, you could search for fleur-de-lis in the scenes and your tally was being counted. I never figured out what that was for. But oh well, no big deal. It did nothing to detract from the game at all. I really enjoyed myself with this game. Glad I bought it. And I recommend it.
I recommend this game!

Played the CE. Too much death. What's entertaining about death? To me the plot was hokey. I really got sick of these smokey, foggy, gassy skeleton heads whirling into the scenes. And the idea of a bad villain as a young music student was hokey and not believeable. Turned me off to the game. The artwork was very nice, but the HOs were boring. The second half of the game became HOS and games. Monotaneous. Wanted the game to be over to such a degree, when I saw the beginning of the bonus part with more angry skeleton heads, I said "Goodbye, I'm out of here, and I uninstalled it. Wish I had my money back. I was expecting a lot more.
I don't recommend this game.

Since I have lived in Los Angeles for many years, the different locations were somewhat familiar to me. I played this game in little pieces at a time. Because you kept going back to the same scenes to find the HOs, I became very bored and that's why I could only take it in small doses at a time. I also did Counterfeit Cove and like that a little better. But, over all, I don't have the patience for an entire and solely HO game anymore. I need a storyline and prefer the special effects of the mixture games that have some HO but adventure as well with moving images and more atmospheric effects and sound effects. I think this game would be good for beginners.
I recommend this game!

I read the review of catbags 8717 and I agree with it. So as not to repeat everything that reviewer said, I will say that the game had a good storyline and I enjoyed the modern day setting rather than creepy haunted castles. I enjoyed solving a crime. But the HO objects for me are way too tiny and I have good eyes. Had to put my face up to the screen. This took away from the enjoyment of playing the game. I also didn't like the limitation on the number of hints. I have played three of the four in this series. Hope they will make their HOs larger in future games and not limit the hints so their game is more enjoyable for the casual player.
I recommend this game!
