Why Do These Devs Dislike Poor E.A.P.?

A new case for our detectives takes them to a small town where local children have been disappearing. We will search for the children and a solution to the mystery.
For clarity, you need to know that the people disappearing are not necessarily children as we are primarily called in to help the mayor find his son, who is old enough to be engaged to Lenore.
You should also ignore anything you know about Edgar Allan Poe's short four stanza poem, "Lenore."
The only connection here is the title of the game. Any similarity begins and ends there.
Once you get past that point, you can look at the game more clearly.
This allows you to put away some of the hostility you may feel for this fresh attack on a great American Writer and see this for the bland mediocre game it is.
Regular stuff: There are a variety of HOPs and mini-games, artwork, and a vague mystery story.
Bad stuff: The story is weak, but that is nothing new for this series. It is in fact to be expected, considering other recent Dark Tales games.
As for excitement, it is left to the disjointed videos at the beginning to provide what someone hoped would be suspense, along with the usual smears of red paint/blood left in odd places.
Bottom line: This new Dark Tales is slightly better than several of the other recent games in the series, but not all it could have been with a bit more thought. Perhaps The Devs could try moving on to a different author?
Owning hundreds of games already, this one needs to be a giant step up to be added to my collection.
I'd second Pilot1's assessment and suggest you move on!
I don't recommend this game.

**Spoiler Alert** This may let the cat out of the bag - pun intended!
Nigel and Sybil are newlyweds with a big problem - Nigel's psycho friend, Basil. Up until fairly recently Basil, Nigel, and Henry were friends - we know this from a portrait on the wall of Nigel's home. It shows the three grown friends together.
Apparently though, Basil has decided to blame Nigel and Henry for Basil's Father's gambling addiction which led to Daddy losing the family fortune when Basil was a child.
I guess it took him a while to go over the edge mentally.
So Basil is taking his crazy out on his friends and their young brides.
Luckily, another friend, Dr. Benjamin, will try to help Nigel and Sybil after Basil's wedding gift of a portrait of Sybil starts to turn her into a monster. The good Doctor will hide her in the woods with Henry's wife, the panther.
Good stuff: There are the usual game elements and a story along with art work that varies wildly between clean sharp lines and a blurry fuzz of over-colored shapes. The background noises are good as are the VO"s. There are morphing objects and other collectibles and a Match 3 alternative to the HOPs.
Bad stuff: Not only does the artwork fuzz out, but the characters’ movements are laughable as they often look like dolls in a stop motion cartoon by small children. The background sounds - birds in the forest, the crackling fire in the hearth, dripping water - will be drowned out by overly loud orchestral music that will suddenly invade a scene, thunder dramatically on and disappear abruptly.
Beyond the irritation of all those bits, is the glaring lack of logic - Nigel transforms into a hawk to find Basil's house in the forest. When he lands, he is still carrying the hacksaw and rope he picked up at home! When Sybil and Dr. Benjamin are attacked by Basil's henchmen, she not only bandages Dr. Benjamin's wound, but does a little cardiac massage and a shot of adrenaline to his heart before he rides off bareback on his way back to town!
Luckily the craziness provided an irritant that kept me awake long enough to finish the Demo, as the beginning was slow enough to set me nodding and there seemed a chance I'd doze off at one point.
You may enjoy this game and I leave you to it.
Just, please, try the Demo before committing to this chapter in the Dark Romance series.
I don't recommend this game.

Lynn and her stepsister, Astrid, need to get out of the path of a tornado. Well, the tornado doesn't move, so they really need to get out of the destructive winds. In the process of abandoning their home, Lynn suddenly acquires a strange power to control lightening that is somehow linked to an amulet she has had since she was a child. Luckily this talent helps her save Astrid, but then Astrid must turn about and save Lynn as she is weak after using her new power and needs help.
The girls have only each other in this twisted future world. There seems to be no one around town other than a surly shopkeeper. As Lynn has to almost be carried, Astrid must find a safe place for her.
Oddly, Astrid decides they need to go see the Mayor. Along the way to his home, Astrid repairs and recharges the amulet and solves various puzzles and HOPs. Naturally, not all is as it seems, and the Mayor is not the help Astrid hoped for.
This new entry in Dawn of Hope seems to have little to link it to the first game other than being another view on a possible post-apocalyptic world. This one will feature a conflict between Oberon, King of the Fae realm and Astrid, trying to reunite with her sister, Lynn.
Good stuff: A nice assortment of HOPs and puzzles, the only repetitious mini-game is the one you must complete to use the amulet. The artwork is well done, so well done I felt somewhat breathless in the high winds near the tornado.
There is sufficient story to draw you into the adventure. I am interested to see more of this new world the Devs have created for this game.
Bad stuff: Some of the setup is trite, like packing a bag that blows away in the wind and you only grab the amulet as the bag takes off. Seeing as how the wind had already blown a good bit of the walls and furniture away, I would have been holding on to the bag itself. Some other plot points and scenes were rough after the beautifully crafted first game of the series.
That being said, I do want this game and will eventually add it to my collection.
In the meantime, I urge you to try the Demo for yourself to see if you are also ready to go on this adventure with Astrid and Lynn
.
I recommend this game!

Another entry in another series, one that could have been so much better with a little more time and thought.
You have joined Carol on a trip to an archeological dig. You are resting in the hotel when a young woman faints on Carol - Hey, it's more comfy than landing on the floor!
She has purchased the Cube Of Sins and wants you to tell her what it is as she has had nightmares ever since she bought it.
Why didn't she take it to the dig, you ask? Let the experts answer her questions? Why you, a newly arrived detective?
And yet I kept on through the entire demo.
Good stuff: You can turn down the music and ambient sounds. There are varied HOPs and recognizable mini-games and puzzles. The art work is sometimes good. There is CE bling including collectable crystals in each scene.
Bad stuff: Pretty much the major problem is the disappointment in what starts out to be an almost decent story and quickly hits the skids. As a detective, you will find that everyone wants you to cater to their needs. You will fetch candy, herbs, and tea, as well as being the only one who can save the victims of the Cube of Sins. Aren't you glad you came?
Most of the challenge lay in not bailing out of the demo. I stuck it out to the trite end.
I can honestly say that this entry in the Whispered Secrets Series is an improvement on the last two tries. There is a better story and better characterizations.
If only being better made it good, the Devs would be lauded.
In this case, it makes the game relatively on the low average side, but I have to give them credit for a better try.
Please try the Demo for yourself, before you buy!

Alexandra is still in charge of her Uncle Paul's Antique Shop. This is somewhat confusing as Uncle Paul is still there, telling her what to do. This time he is sending her to a small town, Netville, celebrating its 200th Birthday. The Town Square is under the influence of a strange artifact and Uncle Paul expects Alexandra to neutralize it. The artifact seems to be in the hands of Michael, a young biker who has roared into town for the celebration with his brother, Ashton, and Michael's girlfriend. They are renting an old house at the edge of town.
Alexandra soon finds out that there is more mystery here than she expected, as the first artifact is quickly dealt with and a stronger one manifests itself.
So the Good News: This story is way better than the saga in the second entry in this series. The HOPs are varied and well thought out. There is a mahjong style alternative to the HOPs. The puzzles are not as plentiful as the HOPs, but were also fairly well done. The game play and characters are engaging.
The Bad News: Logic is once again crushed: Ashton, Michael's brother, is found in a barricaded shed outside the grounds of the house where the brothers are staying, handcuffed and unconscious. After Alexandra cuts off the handcuff, it disappears and no mention is made of it. When Alexandra found Ashton on the floor in the locked shed, she checked his pulse with the stethoscope hanging over the tool bench. (That's where I keep mine!)
There's more, but I know I'm spitting into the wind here, so I'll let it go.
Bottom line: Better story and good game play trump the logic failings to some extent. This third Keeper of Antiques game is worth trying the Demo. See what you think.
I recommend this game!

Donna gets off the train in Paris, expecting to be met by her uncle. She is instead met by Uncle Andre's friend, destined to be the next victim of the Paris Strangler in a matter of minutes. Donna makes it to her Uncle's apartment only to have him flee as the mystic marks that appear on each victim's body moments before they are killed, appear on Uncle Andre! Donna will have to find out who - or what - is killing off only the members of the Golden Circle Club, not only for Uncle Andre's sake, but for her own safety as the marks popped up on her body as the demo ended.
Good stuff: Lot of mediocre and sometimes good puzzles; good HOPs, a few furthering the plot by leaps; art deco stylized artwork; a fairly good mystery; collectible signs; and some CE bling.
You'll have your father's amulet to help you - add a special item to it and you get a flashback that helps move the mystery forward - better still, you don't have to play a puzzle over and over to get to the cut scene!
Bad stuff: That stylized artwork can come off as cartoon like and sometimes did. The puzzles were OK, with a couple of stand-outs - I thought the Club door puzzle was a nice take on a matching puzzle. The five cup and a ball challenge in the alley was more challenge than a three cup version would be.
The HOPs that furthered the story were well done, but some clues were obscure. The stylized sign pieces to collect were mostly in your face. It would have been great if they actually had to be hunted.
The story was not the obvious, we-all-saw-that-coming mystery that we've seen too much of lately. Also no small children have to be rescued!
I recommend that you play the demo. I thought the game was OK, maybe even good, but not great.
I'm still undecided on CE or SE.
Judge for yourself.

You are marrying your beloved when Ursula, the fiancé of his deceased best friend, crashes the wedding, curses you to a slow death, and kidnaps your husband to slowly torture him to death in revenge. Her father, Daddy Sutton, helps you escape the wedding venue ruins and takes you to his family home in hopes of stopping his wayward daughter.
The usual logic lapses are more egregious here than they were in the last installment in this series. I was left with lots of questions:
#1: There were other people on that fatal hunting trip and the Baron Wood's death was deemed an accident, so why place the blame only on his best friend?
#2: Once again there is an amulet to "help" us. Why is there no consistency in the way Ursula's minions react to the amulet? One blows up a balcony, another is shot three times before vanishing with the amulet, and the third one is halted by a gate.
#3: Why didn't Daddy Sutton get his daughter Ursula some help? Apparently she's been unbalanced for quite some time as Baron Wood had tried before his death to help her to reach some level of equilibrium in her emotions.
#4: Why do so many of the mini-games have multiple levels and you are forced to play all of them? And the game elements here are very similar to the earlier games.
#5: Have you ever been overjoyed when a demo was finished very quickly?
I urge you to try this game for yourself before purchasing it. You may not be into unreasonable extreme revenge and copycat game play.
I don't recommend this game.

Great Evil wants to take over the world again. Some how kidnapping your daughter will advance that aim. Save your daughter, save the world - again.
So much for the story.
Game play slogs along through all kinds of silliness to make a tiny step forward: Collect five pieces of a puzzle on the side of a cabinet to get the uniform, go through the pockets, run back outside, open the dog's lunch box, and get a GPS charger.
Break open a glass case in the museum display area to get a chess knight. Find another inside a display. Take them back to the office to play a game to get another piece for something else.
Use an artifact - that you have to put together after you find all of the pieces - to fight the "evil" with a trite puzzle that you have to play every time the entity pops up again, which it will.
Connect a car battery to a sign to get a food coupon to get a doughnut out of a machine to give to the hippie artist who will give you his painting.
And all of this started with you leaving the museum doors unlocked and the alarm off - serves you right!
What does all this have to do with saving your daughter? Will you find her in time?
Let's just say, she won't be home for dinner!
Between the back and forth, the convoluted game play, the glacial pace of this game, and the irritating music, I was delighted when the demo ended.
Make sure you play the Demo first.
I don't recommend this game.

Saint Germaine is back, this time after a little boy, Sebastian, with a unique talent that SG believes will give him eternal life and great power. As the Detective, we have been summoned by the boy's father as he was dying. Daddy had signed a contract with SG thinking it would protect his son. Later he regretted that action. Professor Mallory died because he tried to get out of the deal. Poor Sebastian is alone and has only his haunted house to protect him now that his father is dead.
There is nothing in this demo that you have not seen in a Haunted Legends game before.
The scenes may be different, but the play is the same. The HOPs are basic, the mini-games are trite, and the sheer number of shapes/amulets to place is daunting.
Disappointment seems to be the expectation for these games now. This one is just as successful at disappointing players as the last couple in the series.
Please try the demo. Perhaps you are vastly more forgiving than I am.
I don't recommend this game.

A picture is worth a thousand words.
This is a dark story that starts with human sacrifice and just gets more dreary after that point.
For your birthday you are given an ancient magic amulet that has passed down in Nanny's family. Along with the amulet, you receive a note telling you your parents have had to leave. Moments later a priest is attacked by a monster and your adventure has started.
From this point on, you will be tossed bits of story, or possibly bits of several stories as the details do not seem to link up.
Good stuff: There is a story or stories, decent artwork, puzzles, HOPs, and various types of CE bling.
Bad stuff: A very dark story with very dark scenes, constant shapes to fit into different places, and another sad S of M chapter. All the VOs were very calm and the monsters looked like over calcified dress-wearing skeletons.
I did not find a lot of challenge in the game play. The story was unattractive at best. Nanny is back - a sure sign we are in big trouble. (With her references, I don't know why any monarch would hire her to serve their family!)
Please try the demo for yourself.
I don't recommend this game.
