I can't tell you how disappointed I am with this game. I was so excited when a/the Christmas game came out that I bought it based on all the usual gushing 5 star reviews. I lasted through the tutorial and then uninstalled.
First off, they give you a choice of watching the tutorial and then having faster hint recharges or not watching it and then it taking longer. Why be punished for just wanting to get on with it? That aside, The tutorial stretched out so that they'd tell you a "feature" to look for then give you an astoundingly crammed cluttered room of stuff to go through to find the items. Then on to the next room/scene where they'd give you another "feature" incorporated into the play and then to your cluttered junk pile room to play. On and on. I would have liked it better if they just told you everything at once or at least gave you a pop up window from time to time. In between the rooms were the most simplistic puzzles to play. There was a lot going on, all in all, but the items were at times 3/4ths hidden behind another item or so tiny I was using the "hint" 3 times just to find 12 items. I didn't play full screen because on a 21" monitor it was almost vomit inducing. After a very short time I shut off the music because it was pretty but not Christmasy at all, and I shut off the sounds because it was a loop of Santa going, "ho ho ho" every 20 seconds or a dog barking every 20 seconds. After every hidden object scene, the game would slowly add up your 1-2 or 3 star rating, add up other points for finding the bonus item, tell you that you did a good job. My last straw was thinking how blurry and old the game looked, then seeing here there were already reviews posted from last year. Ok, I'm done.
This might be very fun for those not familiar with past awesome holiday games. Or he younger crowd who has the patience for HO scene after HO scene and who have the eyesight to stare into a full screen of clutter and jumble and retina burning colors.
Didn't care for it, but of course you very well might.
I don't recommend this game.

The graphics are cartoon-like and plain but that's OK. It's colorful and clean. The music is repetitive after a while but you can turn it down. That's about the only option along with full screen or not full screen but when I clicked "not full screen" nothing changed.
Part of why I didn't like this game was it made me headachy, literally, because it was the full size of my monitor and it's nothing but scrolling up and down and up and down and up and down and sideways. You are shown an item that you have to find, then click. The idea is interesting in a way - the first 5 levels I played were in a house of many floors. Doors would shut and open, walling off the rooms from view, so you had to remember where the kitchen was (there might be more than 1) or where the bedroom was. You might be asked to find the green towel, and it might be in the bathroom on the 2nd floor right side or the 4th floor 3rd door from the left. So, you click, click, scroll to open the walls/doors and find the items.
About 2 minutes into it I was ready to projectile vomit. If you like the motion, or it doesn't bother you, then this won't.
The next irritation was the timer. There's no way to play it without one. This is nice if you want to test your memory and really try to remember where all that stuff is that you had a second to look at, but when you don't find things fast enough you start over. you're rated with 1,2, or 3 stars. If you don't care, you can advance. if you're a perfectionist and want to get 3 stars for every level then you start over. This, I promise you, will make you vomit since it's a lot of scrolling. :)
That's the game. Lots and lots of levels. A silly background story where you're a cute blonde engineer architect cartoon chick whose boss is making her build a tower. Yep, that's it. Yes, I shook my head on that one, too. I thought this might be a nice little brainless fun game to play in between saving cars in the rain and dead ancestors from curses and finding oil for rusty locks but I just didn't care for it.
At least try the demo. You'll know in a few minutes if this one is for you.
I don't recommend this game.

I was excited that it was about my Homeland, and I only did a few eye-rolls about the plot's "shield maiden" which, because we can't bore people to death in reviews, let me just say there was historically no such thing. But, that's ok. Vikings never had horns on their helmets either. But I liked the graphics of this game and the music in the bonus section, I thought, was really beautiful. I had hope.
I tried to play this over 2 nights. I became quickly irritated, with the annoying, flat tone when you click on anything. These guys are stellar at putting these in their games and I really dread buying them (though I do) because I know the most annoying sounds in the Universe will be included in them, every time you click on anything, go to your inventory, or find an object. This one didn't disappoint. I just couldn't take it.
That said, I played over 2 nights, thinking I was just being crabby the first night when I gave up after about an hour and a half. Night #2 was the same. To me, the game was ploddingly slow and never picked up as I'd hoped. I got tired of all the constant interruptions with cut scenes and mini-movies, lots to read, a lot of Blah, Blah, Blah and waxing eloquent and expounding about the story at hand. Even though I had the banner thingies off, they still came up here and there and would linger on the screen long enough to make me have to wait before I could proceed. I more felt I was being read a kid's book by characters and they were throwing in "game things" to do now and then so I wouldn't fall asleep with my face on the keyboard.
Just when I'd hope/pray/sincerely wish the game would get going and I could start getting immersed in...well, playing the game...someone would interrupt with more yapping or some mystical Whatever would happen and I'd have to sit and wait.
I just personally also don't like HO scenes where you have to read a few lines of text and have to find the OBJECT they're reading to you about, because it's in CAPS and so the whole thing gets drawn out to 5 minutes when 1 would have done. I love puzzles, but the few I saw had me go, "what?!" because it was confusing and the info wasn't there to make it sensible. It would have been much nicer, I think, if they just did 'the game' and stopped all the interruptions. If you like more of a running story and characters talking a lot, you'd like this so I won't say I don't recommend it.
I hope to go back to it sometime but I lost patience and didn't finish it.
So, nei takk (no thanks)

I bought this game due to the gushing 5 star reviews even though I take them with a grain of salt because I've noticed even lousy games get 5 stars all the time. I did think the graphics looked great and they sure are. Another game where I'd stop just to look at the scenes, appreciating the clarity and detail of things (which I really don't do much anymore but I sure love to do!)
Since others gave details of the story and things they found terrific on this game I'll just grouse about what I didn't care for:
I found the game beautiful to look at but it's the same old stuff - the zipper pull breaks so yep you guessed it - you'll soon find a paper clip. There are items with whip-stitching on it where someone hid something so you guessed it - you'll soon run into a knife. That of course is rusty. So you bet you'll soon find a grinding stone. I found myself predicting the next 4 moves I'd make with each item I found because been there, done that. More than I like anymore.
I also found the game very, very easy. In that "are you talking to 8 year olds?" way. Before you even got to the first main scene you were told about 4 times what had just happened and OMG please oh please help. (Yeah, yeah. Let me play already, I do get it. :P)
Everything you clicked, every item, brought up a black bar text telling you what you just did or immediately said what you had to do - "I wonder if there's something inside this piggy bank?" "I need to remove this bolt from this door" "The dial is missing from the radio." I felt as if there was way too much stating of the obvious and hand holding. You weren't allowed to click around, figure out what was needed, connect your own dots or just think about things. There was no way to get rid of the texts, not even on the hardest setting.
As someone already pointed out, there were a lot of voice scenes that you couldn't click forward through if you read fast. Some were intrusive, I thought, because it was again being told what was going on which you already know and were told about 3 times.
I wish I would have waited for the SE as there really isn't much extras to spend on the CE. It is pretty to look at and there's a lot of clicking on things to get things you pretty much use right away. It's easy-ish and a decent story. I just like more of a challenge and think this game might have been able to give that with some tighter setting options. Maybe. I got very impatient about 1/2 though.
Very much worth it when it's a SE.
I recommend this game!

...just like my dog, so it stands to reason. :)
Others put very well the story line of this game, so I'll spare you. (Granny Gruff's review is wonderful for this, I think!)
This is like playing an interactive Disney Movie only I really dislike Disney so hate to make that comparison. It's excellently done, is my point. This game is a story and there are minimal instructions on the screen to hold your hand - sometimes *too* minimal I thought (more below on this). It took me a while to get into it but I was so enchanted with the creativity behind it, I hung in there and was glad I did. This isn't a HO game, it isn't a car-crashing-in-the-rain game. No ghosts, no idiot relative that went and got kidnapped by the Undead. It's an exploring, looking, put-your-thinking-cap-on game. A lot of random things in the picture are clickable and quite funny. You have to click, and look, and wonder in order to find what you need to find. I did all this (it took me 6.5 hours to play) and even then I saw I didn't collect all the dog's collars I was to find. I got so entranced in looking at the graphics or things that did funny, silly things I forgot.
I really loved it, except for: a strategy guide which is very, very helpful and even needed at times but which takes 4 clicks to get to and 3 clicks to then close. The "parts" are merely labeled "part 1", "part 3" etc. and you have no idea where you are or what part you'd be in. It's one, continuous story and it got tedious clicking through the SG to try to find where I was to look up a solution. It'd be better, I think, to name the chapters after the area you're exploring.
You can't go back once you're done with the game to collect the dog's collars that you missed.
The first bit of the game is a lot of going back and forth and back and forth, Old Style - running and going from one scene to the next. It takes 30 seconds each time and you do this multiple times. There's no overall map you can use to jump, and you do get little sections of map in areas where you'll be awhile but all this back and forth was really wearing me thin.
There are several arcade games that are clever and fun but the subtitles or instructions zoom by and there's no way to re-see them. It's hard to play and read instructions, or try to just figure out what to do as you're doing it. Again, it just irritated me as it slammed this nice, fun story to a halt and added irritation to it.
I would have liked a button for the SG and a button to pull up instructions. Blam, there it is.
The great part were the credits. Yes, credits. They are the sweetest thing. I mean wonderful. I watched them about 10 times, I kid you not. This game is full of a love for dogs. It's also helping to donate and partner with a Dog Rescue place, and they explain it in the credits. How nice is that, all this work and time, for a good cause? And such a sweet story, and a happy ending.
I spent a PCCode on it and it was well, well worth it. Give it a chance; it's different. This is a neat game....kudos BF!
I recommend this game!

It took me a little while to get used to the mechanics of this game because it's very different from the usual stuff. I almost gave up and am so glad I didn't. I hate reading, I never read tutorials and face it- some games are just made badly and that's that. This seemed like it but is NOT like that. This is a gem. The more I played, the better it got! The tutorial (25 short pages that teach-as-you-go) couldn't be more complete. If you take the time to look at each gorgeous, clever, creative scene and learn the features of the game I think you'll fall in love with it, too!
This is an Adventure game! Not a HOG in sight! Full of clever little puzzles and things to figure out to do in a gorgeous Steampunk-Robot-Whimsical world. This game was created by 10 people and I sat at almost all the scenes going, "wow!" as I went to each one. The details and drawing are amazing and clear, and there's a lot of humor and a lot to do.
It is a minimal set of options and a complaint by some will be that there are some language issues - the English at times is "wrong" but you know what they mean and so I say "so what" :). It's kind of cute in a way, as the game is.
There's a jump map and where active tasks are.
There are achievements (one even being that you are already are where you just decided to jump to - awkward! but haven't we all done this? Well, kudos to us!)
There's a Gadget Gizmo that you're trying to fix - crucial in the beginning as it has a plug you can click and drag to various little boards and machines in the scenes to interact with them to get your initial set of information. This contains 4 tabs - the map, a journal the lists observations, a task list (again things you can quickly read - and should as they are entered) and the broken section.
An arrow over the device lets you lets you click "back" through the game.
On the right side is a small Hint orb which shows you exactly what to do using a picture. It is excellent. You can skip any minigame and they are unique.
A Compass icon will show you exactly where the active pathways are if you don't want to wander around, stumped, but you can turn this on or off any time.
You can also play with none of these features if you want to go Hard Core.
The characters talk to you via text boxes and you have to click what your reply to them is. Weird, yeah yeah. Doesn't seem to matter what you pick, and when you pick the correct one you still have to pick the remaining one to close out the conversation entirely. It's ok, really. It's not endless like in some games; you just click and it's over with. No wrong answers.
Using all these and reading the tutorial makes this game a breeze to understand.

I'm getting such a kick out of this game and the graphics are just so neat! This game was made with a lot of charm and challenge behind it. It's a great escape and such a nice change!
I recommend this game!

I have actually come to read reviews the last 4 nights after I have spent over an hour playing a game I already bought, thinking it had to me "me" because I was really, really not liking the game. How can I not like 4 of them to the point where I quit after spending so much time playing?
I can echo the other 3-2 star reviewers here but I won't only to say this is very disappointing. I went from an insane asylum to the middle ages and I found myself hitting "hint", which I never, ever do. It just didn't make sense. I 'get' the spooky "ambiance" and all that but mocking "mental illness" is just ...not funny (and trust me, I am as sarcastic as they come). It was disrespectful, I thought, and with all there is out there to "blame" the goofiness that has gone on in this series and the family involved that the Devs picked "mental illness" and then even had little dolls with labels (some which didn't even list accurate, real mental disorders; just made up ignorant ones) was sad to me.
The worst part is the sounds. This is typical of this Dev. A one-note droning "sound track" that causes me to turn the sounds off so why bother? I did this the other night, too. Irritating- beyond- words "clicks" and mouse presses things going into inventory. Do they listen to this stuff?
. Between the grating sounds, the plot that made no sense and too many references to the past games - which I thought unfair to new players - and the "scary mental people" thing, it's a no go. The graphics were nice. Always are. Sorry - such a far, far cry from the magic that was MCF.
I don't recommend this game.

I actually wrote an actual review but before posting, I re-read everyone else's 3-2 star reviews. It then became pointless to just parrot the time and work others put in to type up their reviews so I'm not posting mine after all. I'm late to the party, and really dislike when people post, almost word-for word, what other say just to get kudos and validation. Others said it much better. I'd like to just say that Granny Gruff pretty much said what i was going o say. So, I defer to her excellent review. This game was ok but underwhelming as far as anything exciting of new.
What struck me as exciting was that it was good to see thet The Dude, from "The Big Lebowski" has found work in hidden object games. It was worth spending a PCC code for, which is what I'd recommend this game for since "decent" games to spend those on are far and few between. This one is OK for that so that's why I recommend it. I wouldn't pay for it, however. Just to clarify.
I recommend this game!

Wow, what a great game. It's been a long time since I liked something this much. I am a bit tired of the HOGs but I of course buy a ton. I have bought less because it's the same stuff and while I appreciate the work that goes into the games, some strike me as if they're being done on cookie-cutter assembly lines lately. This one is so full of creative twists and extra effort at every turn I just have to say I'm impressed.
Others have gone on and on (an on) about the story so I won't. I'm not trying to get a job writing for "Wired", I'm trying to say if the game is worth spending your money on. It is. I think this CE is worth it because while I never care at all about the music and screen savers or concept art (I see that as the developer's homage to their ego; it's not extras for ME, it's their extra stuff. Do you really put annoying, looped game tracks on your iPod? hah. ) This game truly has extras for US.
Here's the bullet points:
Colors, artwork, workings:
Really great and crisp and pretty. Lots of little details in every corner. A few random things I clicked on did things when they didn't have to. I love extra thought that's put into a game because i can tell the Devs just had fun making the game. Heads on the people are real heads. Gramma looks like a real Gramma. Voice overs are real people speaking like real people, not hammy voice actors making you cringe. The mouths move like mouths. I usually turn the voices off because face it, my dog can do better, but these are nice. No one looks like they were up partying the night before and too tired to be there. Chris the Fiance is cute. His Mother, the evil person in the game, is a witch with a "B" and when she showed up I said, "OMG what a biat..." at the monitor and she didn't disappoint. There is no sniveling child who should have been in bed long ago and no one acting so stupid that I didn't care if they were eaten by the evil red eyed Thing, which there also are none. You are not standing at a door you can't open with a bomb, a flame thrower and a front loader. Yay.
Match 3 game can be played instead of hidden object game. Many mini-games and hidden object games have a game-within-a-game. Hidden object game might start out by finding 3 of 4 items (3 books, 3 glasses, 3 gifts) which then unlocks a hidden object list. They're junk piles but well done and again, artwork is pretty.
You have a camera with which you take 11 wildlife photos of slightly hidden animals through the game when you spot them in any scene. Map can indicate if you forgot to do this and need to go back. You can turn this feature on or off via the map at any time.
There are 11 collectible figurines hidden in the game that you must collect. This can be turned on or off via the map, too
Settings: By "slider" you can set the : music - effects - environment -voices and check: wide screen- custom icons - full screen - special effects
You can choose to view the whole tutorial or just the part of the tutorial for the "special" features
Play modes:
Casual - Active Zones highlighted, skip for games and hint refill quick
Expert: Active Zones not highlighted, skip for games and hint refill slow
Hardcore - No highlights, no tutorial
Custom: set yourself: tutorial (all or just the special features), active area indicator wanted?, active area sparkles?, Hidden object sparkles?, Hint refill and puzzle skip - set to between 15-90 seconds
Interactive jump map lets you access, via pop-up on same page, your achievements so far and collected items so far. Map indicates where you are, what locations are available and which have a task available. You can turn that feature on or off via the map at any time.
Strategy guide stays open to the page you last left it at.
Mini games are clever, many are new. Demo was 90 minutes.
Extras: concept art (10), music (5), Bonus game, Wildlife photos (11), 10 question personality quiz to see which game character you're most like, game achievements (22 - some are timed like find 5 HO items in 5 seconds or finish a puzzle in a minute. Some are things you do just playing the game. They are all obtainable) There's a Bubbles mini game and Match 3 mini game to play once you get all 11 animal photos.
Off to buy. I think you'll like this. Lot's of extra care behind this one. When they enjoy it, it shows, and then I think we enjoy it!
I recommend this game!

Wow - 2 great devs and I had to stop trying to finish the game to write this. What the heck happened? The graphics were great; details beautiful in most places as you'd expect from these folks but there it ended. I was expecting a real challenge but was disappointed to find a very linear game. Go to a room, find something, click on it, pick the stuff up and then go to the next room, use it, click on something, get more stuff, go find where to use it. It required no thinking - just walking along and placing things where they go. The jump map (If you chose to use it) tells you were you need to go and where things need to be done so you can make it more difficult if you'd want to but once you put the 1 or 3 things in the room, you were done.
Lots of bright colors are a nice break from the Death and Gloom but the soundtrack, if you could call it that, was turned off after about 5 minutes and so then were ALL the sounds (there weren't any to speak of so I'd say the sound track was.) It was 1 or 2 screeching, droning notes that never took a breath and would lightly change pitch in each room. It was beyond my tolerance and added nothing but annoyance to the game. Why anyone would think people would want to listen to this for a few hours is beyond me, or why they'd want to play a game in silence to get away from this is beyond me.
It's a pretty game if you don't want to put too much thought into it all and don't want to analyse too much. Disappointing if you keeping hoping for a challenge, good story, good music, and and using your brain cells.
I recommend this game!
